Brian Cashman Reacts to Joe Kelly Bashing Yankees After Dodgers’ World Series Win

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, speaking to reporters from the annual General Mangers Meetings in San Antonio, Tx., on Tuesday, said that recent critical comments made by Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Joe Kelly are not indicative of how the World Series-winning club views New York.

"I heard that, I also know people with the Dodgers," Cashman said. "So I’ve got some internal conversations that I’ve got feedback on. I think it’s more representative of some specific players rather than the overall group.

"In Joe’s case, it feels like for some reason it’s a little personal the way he’s been out there talking like he has. … So I can’t make much more than that. I know he’s certainly talking a lot right now, and he won – or they won."

Kelly, among other things, said the Dodgers made their now-infamous Game 5 fifth-inning comeback, which was sparked by a comedy of errors from the Yankees, because New York "started kicking the ball around and playing Yankee baseball."

Kelly during an appearance on the podcast followed up those comments by saying the World Series was a "mismatch" and had the playoff teams been re-ranked, said the Yankees would have been the "eighth or ninth-best playoff team."

Kelly's comments came on the heels of reporting from the Joel Sherman, who outlined the Dodgers' apparent scouting report, which was to simply put the ball in play and "make the Yankees execute."

But Cashman, leaning on his sources in the Dodgers' organization, feels that the club's view of his Yankees as a team of "talent over fundamentals", comes from a select group of players, and not the entirety of the organization.

Figuring out a way to improve fundamentally should be a part of New York's winter plans. But Cashman may have bigger fish to fry this offseason, namely retaining free agent slugger Juan Soto, who could command a contract that makes him the second-highest paid player in baseball behind Shohei Ohtani.

Pepper gives Essex the pep-talk with first home victory in 12 months

Michael Pepper’s pyrotechnical 87 off 47 balls led Essex to their first home Men’s Vitality Blast victory in exactly a year, as Sussex Sharks’ quarter-final hopes took a new battering. The Eagles hadn’t won at the Ambassador Cruise Line Ground in a T20 since downing Kent Spitfires on July 11, 2024, after a dismal beginning to this season.Mohammad Amir’s three tight for 16, backed by two-fors for Simon Harmer, Sam Cook, and Shane Snater, rolled the visitors for 145 – with a lively 52 from John Simpson the only bright spark for the Sharks.Essex would have almost certainly won the reverse fixture had rain not intervened, and Pepper’s season-best made sure they weren’t thwarted again to give them just their second win in the competition.Sussex have lost three of their last four Blast matches to slip into mid-table, with Sunday’s clash with Hampshire Hawks crucial to their hopes of a quarter-final spot.Barring Simpson’s fifty, the Sharks’ innings was a catastrophe from start to finish, having chosen to bat first in the sunshine.Daniel Hughes got away with an edge to slip off the third ball of the match and, despite rushing to 27 off 15 balls, gave Snater a hanger at deep square leg.The left-hander-heavy top order struggled to deal with Harmer spinning the ball away from them as the Eagles skipper returned two for 25 – lefty James Coles offered him a caught-and-bowled while right-hander Danny Lamb slapped to backward point when he returned later in the innings.Amir and Snater were super-accurate to back up their captain as Sussex spluttered to 76 for four at the halfway point, with Tom Clark falling to Cook.Simpson was the antidote to the carousel of wickets with a smart half-century in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it 25 balls – decorated by three sixes down the ground and another on the sweep. He put on 39 with Tom Alsop and 42 with Lamb but neither foundation built skyscrapers in the run-rate graph. And the last five wickets dissolved in 16 balls, with the last three falling in the space of four deliveries.Lamb was the first of the quintet to fall, before Simpson didn’t get hold of a hook, Amir bowled Ollie Robinson and had Tymal Mills caught in successive balls and the innings was rounded off by Nathan McAndrew holing out.Paul Walter and Jordan Cox gave Sussex hope by come and going inside three overs but once Pepper got motoring as every delivery to him felt like cannon fodder.Bowling to Pepper proved to be a nightmare as he mixed power with innovative flicks to hammer his third fifty of the season in 22 balls.Charlie Allison helped take a huge bite into the chase with a 69 stand, before the youngster tried for a third six in five balls and picked out deep midwicket. It began a 20-ball boundary dry spell, with Lamb in particular hard to get away, but the run-rate was in Essex’s favour and despite Matt Critchley hitting down deep square’s throat, Pepper and Luc Benkenstein made sure of the four points with an unbroken 54 run stand.Pepper confirmed the emphatic victory by carting his 14th four to win with 23 balls to spare.

The new Dele Alli: Frank must unleash Spurs' £97m-rated "game changer"

It is the start of a crucial period for Tottenham Hotspur, so can they continue their impressive start to the campaign?

Having accumulated 14 points so far, Spurs begin the weekend third in the Premier League table, following a 2-1 victory over Leeds United before the international break; Mathys Tel and Mohammed Kudus the scorers.

Next up, Sunday’s visit from Aston Villa commences a very tough looking fixture list for Thomas Frank’s team, who will take on Everton (A), Chelsea (H), Manchester United (H) and then Arsenal (A) in their subsequent four league fixtures.

If the Lilywhites are going to collect a respectable number of points from these matches, Frank must make one key star, reminiscent of Dele Alli, a central figure, both literally and figuratively.

Dele Alli's rise and fall at Tottenham

Last month, Dele Alli was released by Como, having made just one appearance for the Lariani, this a nine minute cameo against AC Milan at San Siro in March, cut short as he was sent off.

That was his first, and so far only, appearance for anyone for 748 days, back in the footballing wilderness at the age of just 29.

In his pomp though, Dele was one of the best midfielders in the world, earning 37 England caps, starting against Colombia, Sweden and Croatia as the Three Lions reached a first World Cup semi-final in 28 years back in 2018.

For Tottenham too, as the graphic below demonstrates, he made 269 appearances for Tottenham, directly involved in 126 goals, a key figure in Mauricio Pochettino’s incredibly strong side.

During this period, Pochettino labelled him “one of the most talented players in England”, while teammate Harry Kane stated “Dele has everything. He scores goals, makes runs, creates chances. He’s an unbelievable player”.

That ability to both create chances as a midfielder but also score goals like a centre-forward is what made prime Dele unique, so which member of the current Spurs squad could replicate this?

Tottenham's new Dele Alli

During a pre-season friendly against Newcastle in Seoul, James Maddison ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament, ruling him out for, probably, the entirety of this season.

Thus, Tottenham acted fast, knowing that they needed to add some creativity, so, after failing in the attempt to sign Eberechi Eze, acquired Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig for £52m, who isn’t a bad alternative.

The Dutch international has been highly-rated for many years now, making his senior debut for Paris Saint-Germain, before really announcing himself on loan at PSV Eindhoven, scoring 22 goals and registering 11 assists during the 2022/23.

More recently, he has been at RB Leipzig, certainly impressing during his two seasons in Saxony, with Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout labelling him a “game changer”, while his market value has now soared to as much as £97m, as per CIES.

The Dutch international has featured in each of Tottenham’s last four Premier League matches, starting three of them, but is yet to score for Spurs, his sole assist coming on debut against West Ham.

So, let’s take a look at his statistics so far.

As the table notes, Simons has pretty impressive attacking statistics at Tottenham so far this season, despite the lack of tangible end product.

However, the majority of his minutes have come as a left-winger, which is very much not his best position, significantly more likely to thrive in a number ten role.

Well, against Leeds a fortnight ago, he was finally deployed through the middle, flanked by Mohammed Kudus and Wilson Odobert, with Mathys Tel leading the line.

This has to be the set-up Frank uses going forward, especially in matches where Tottenham are going to be dominating territory and possession.

The recent 1-1 home draw with bottom of the table Wolves the prime example of this, with Simons shunted out to the left flank, with João Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur both starting at the base of midfield, which felt unnecessarily cautious.

Simons scored ten Bundesliga goals last season, the second-most of any midfielder, behind only Jamal Musiala, showing that he can be a goal-scoring threat when utilised correctly.

In his prime at Spurs, Dele was unplayable as a goal-scoring number ten, and Simons has shown similar attacking instincts at previous clubs, so he needs to be given attacking freedom in a similar way.

Everton choose priority signing with formal January approach to sign £17m ace

Everton have made a decent if unspectacular start to the Premier League season and have now identified a player they want to sign as a matter of urgency in January.

David Moyes urges Everton to continue seeking improvement

After a summer of tidy business in the transfer market and some intriguing signings, Everton have started the campaign on the front foot and look to have left the days of fighting survival behind them, providing they can sustain their momentum.

Jack Grealish has been the Toffees’ most impressive addition and created another four chances in their 1-1 draw at home to West Ham United on Monday, albeit David Moyes believes there is still more to come from the England international after he was left out of Thomas Tuchel’s latest squad.

He said before his side face Crystal Palace: “I think there’s still room for Jack to improve. We want more from him – more assists from him and goals from him, as well.

“He’s started very well, but we’re driving him on and trying to get more from him. I still think his ambition is to get back in the England team. If he scores some goals and keeps up the assists, he won’t be far away.”

Intriguingly, the Manchester City loanee could have competition for his place if Everton formalise their interest in Celtic forward Daizen Maeda after the Japan international cropped up on their radar to add versatility across the front three.

On the flipside, the Toffees’ rearguard has remained relatively solid despite only Seamus Coleman and the lesser-spotted Nathan Patterson available at right-back, something they could now be about to fix swiftly.

Everton ready to make formal approach for Juanlu Sanchez

According to Orgullo Biri, Everton view Sevilla defender Juanlu Sanchez as a priority signing in January and are ready to make a formal approach for his services.

The La Liga outfit aren’t willing to sanction any bids that fall under the £17 million mark, though the Spain Under-21 international is open to a new challenge if the correct opportunity arises.

Capable of attacking and defending with a high degree of output, Sanchez has registered six goals and nine assists in 80 appearances for Sevilla and is viewed as one of their prize assets, albeit it remains to be seen whether they allow him to depart after Loic Bade and Dodi Lukebakio.

Crucially, the report describes Everton’s need for a right-back as an ‘urgent’ priority, lending credence to the fact they appear keen to conclude a swift deal to offer a different option on that side of their backline.

Jake O’Brien has featured frequently in an adapted role, though having someone who is naturally capable of slotting in would offer Moyes tactical flexibility at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

R Sridhar to conduct '10-day fielding programme' for Sri Lanka men's and women's teams

Wasim Akram and Jonty Rhodes had also been hired to run brief bowling and fielding programmes respectively, in the last 10 years.

Gary Neville video controversy: Sky Sports' stance on Man Utd legend revealed as tirade against 'angry white men' after synagogue attack sparks major backlash

A video posted online by Gary Neville in the wake of a synagogue attack in Manchester has courted controversy and attracted criticism, but it is reported that the former United and England defender will not face any punishment from Sky Sports. Neville remains a prominent public face for the broadcasting giants, with a role being filled as a co-commentator and pundit.

What Neville said

Neville, speaking through his LinkedIn account, took aim at “angry middle-aged white men” and offered his take on the trend of Britons fastening St George and Union Jack flags to lampposts and bridges across the country. The 50-year-old spoke out after the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation tragedy, which saw Syrian-born terrorist Jihad Al-Shamie stage a deadly knife and car rampage.

He began by saying: “Seeing the news last night and the news this morning dominated by the horrific attacks within the Jewish community, just a mile from here.” He then turned his attention to the ‘Operation Raise the Colours’ flag movement – co-founded by Andrew Currien, a close ally of Tommy Robinson – and went on to say: “When I was driving to Salford City last night, going down Littleton Road, I seen probably 50 or 60 Union Jack flags. And on the way back I went down the parallel road, Bury New Road, which has got the Jewish community right at its heart and they're out on the streets, defiant, not hiding or in fear. Funnily enough on one of my development sites last week there was a Union Jack flag put up and I took it down instantly.”

Neville added: “I just kept thinking as I was driving home last night that we're all being turned on each other, and the division that's being created is absolutely disgusting. Mainly created by angry, middle-aged white man, who know exactly what they're doing.”

AdvertisementGetty Images SportStance of Sky Sports

Said comments generated lively debate, with Sky Sports reportedly being threatened with boycott action. Their company guidelines state: “Talent and contributors should be aware that social media communities are public forums and should not undertake activity that brings either the programme or Sky into disrepute.” The reports that “the pundit is not expected to face any action”.

This is not the first time that Neville has shared his opinion on political matters, having previously spoken out against working conditions in Qatar ahead of the 2022 World Cup and condemned the behaviour and leadership of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Reform UK MP Lee Anderson is among those to have responded to Neville, saying: “I believe in free speech but on this occasion just shut up. You had no problem in playing in front of the England flag. And the middle-aged English men you talk about are the same type of men that paid your wages.”

Neville refutes unpatriotic claims

Neville refuted any suggestion that his comments were unpatriotic, saying: “I played for my country 85 times, I love my country. I love Manchester and I love England, but I've been building in this city for 15 to 20 years and there's no one put a Union Jack flag up in the last 15 to 20 years, so why do you have to put one up now? Quite clearly it's sending a message to everybody that there's something you don't like.

“The Union Jack flag being used in a negative fashion is not right and I'm a proud supporter of England, Great Britain, of our country, and I'll champion it anywhere in the world as one of the greatest places to live. But I think we need to check ourselves, bring ourselves back to a neutral point, because we're being pulled right and left and we don't need to be, at all.”

He added: “Brexit has had a devastating impact on this country and the messaging is getting extremely dangerous. All these idiots out there spreading hate speech and abuse in any form, we must stop promoting them. We must stop elevating our voices towards them and it needs to stop now, and get back to a country of peace, love, harmony and become a team again.”

Man City now eyeing major move to sign "unique" ace who silenced the Etihad

With just two days until the transfer window slams shut, Manchester City have reportedly set their sights on an alternative option to Real Madrid’s Rodrygo.

Latest on Man City's transfer targets

Man City’s transfer window began with a flourish but has slowly petered out. Now, with deadline day approaching, there’s still a number of dominoes that must fall in order for them to get their main targets. One of those targets is of course Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Paris Saint-Germain shot-stopper has already said goodbye to fans in France, but those at the Etihad are yet to get their deal done.

As things stand, City are still waiting on Ederson’s exit before they push ahead and secure Donnarumma. There’s no denying that time is running out for that move to happen, however, and Pep Guardiola could yet miss out.

Donnarumma isn’t the only top star to be linked with a move to Man City, either. Real Madrid’s Rodrygo has also been on their radar this summer as he looks for a route out of the Bernabeu.

Just like Donnarumma, however, the Brazilian’s move likely relies on whether the Citizens sell one of their own first. For some time, it looked as though that could be Savinho, who didn’t feature in City’s first two Premier League games, but Tottenham Hotspur have since turned towards other targets.

Man City would be pulling off a huge shock with this move

ByJoe Nuttall Aug 29, 2025

A better option than Rodrygo may yet also emerge. Reports are now suggesting that those at the Etihad have set their sights on an alternative superstar option for Guardiola.

Man City eyeing Olise

As reported by BILD’s Christian Falk, Man City are now eyeing a move to sign Michael Olise from Bayern Munich alongside Paris Saint-Germain and Premier League rivals, Liverpool. The Frenchman has starred since swapping Crystal Palace for the Bundesliga champions, who are not currently willing to sell their star man.

Lukas Ullrich chases Bayern Munich's Michael Olise.

The interest of the Citizens is certainly interesting, despite Bayern’s reported stance. Guardiola has struggled to find a winger as effective as Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane were during City’s peak under the Spaniard, but it hasn’t been for the want of trying. Jeremie Doku, Savinho, Grealish and others have all tried and failed to truly grab the same headlines. Olise, however, could be the man that Guardiola has been searching for.

Compared to Rodrygo, there’s a clear standout. Olise is on another level to the Real Madrid man, but Guardiola will already be well aware of the quality that the winger has in abundance.

Described as “unique” by former Man City man Owen Hargreaves last season, it wasn’t so long ago that Olise was silencing the Etihad with a last-minute penalty to salvage a draw for Crystal Palace.

Leeds now set to submit bid for £22m star who's become a "different player"

Leeds United are in the market for Premier League firepower and could now be about to step up their pursuit of a forward who proved his worth last term, according to a report.

Leeds United set to welcome Dominic Calvert-Lewin

After Lukas Nmecha joined earlier this summer, Leeds are set to sign free agent Dominic Calvert-Lewin after the expiration of his contract at Everton ahead of the competitive season.

Of course, there is a scenario where he could make his debut in an emotionally-charged encounter against the Toffees on Monday, where Daniel Farke will want his side to impose themselves at Elland Road to get off to a flying start.

Everton's DominicCalvert-Lewincomes on as a substitute

Finally, Leeds have added some Premier League experience to their strikeforce after Farke’s demand to secure more attacking reinforcements, and there could well be more to come if his words after last weekend’s draw against AC Milan are anything to go by.

He stated: “In comparison to our Championship squad, we have not improved the offence. To have a squad capable to survive in the top flight, we need to strengthen. In offence, we need some top-class signings, not just numbers.”

Leicester City’s Bilal El Khannouss could also join Leeds to provide an element of creativity. Nevertheless, the Whites are far from the only club in the race for the Moroccan international.

With the campaign now here and excitement brewing at Elland Road, it will be up to the 49ers to deliver on Farke’s needs to ensure the Yorkshire outfit are well-placed to retain their top-flight status, something that could be made easier if they can recruit their latest target.

Leeds United set to submit official bid to land Beto

According to Football Insider, Leeds United are set to submit a formal offer for Everton striker Beto that will come in at somewhere between £20 million to £22 million.

Last term, the Guinea-Bissau international was described as a “whole different player” by Troy Deeney after his introduction as a starter under David Moyes.

Instant upgrade on Calvert-Lewin: Leeds in talks to sign £43m "revelation"

Leeds are not done shopping for a new striker, even after Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s arrival…

2 ByJoe Nuttall Aug 14, 2025

Despite being a peripheral figure at the start of 2024/25, he ended the campaign with a respectable tally of 12 goals from 35 appearances as the Toffees secured a comfortable finish.

Eight of his strikes came inside 20 Premier League outings, meaning Leeds could inherit someone with a strike-rate of one goal every 2.5 matches in the top-flight, taking some of the burden off Joel Piroe, Nmecha and Calvert-Lewin, once the latter is officially announced.

While Beto’s arrival would leave Leeds with quite a few striking options, there is no doubt he would only serve to improve their chances of staying in the Premier League.
