ESPNcricinfo staff21-May-2024The new women’s domestic T20 competition in Australia will now be aligned to the eight WBBL clubs, alongside an ACT side, rather than state teams after pressure from Victoria and New South Wales over the proposed structure.The tournament, designed to make up for the reduced WBBL which has been trimmed to a 40-game regular season, was initially going to be state-based but Victoria and New South Wales, who both provide two teams in the WBBL, were unhappy with that model and feared some of their fringe players could potentially lose out on playing opportunities.Under the solution thrashed out by the states and CA, there will now be eight teams under their WBBL banners plus a side from ACT who play in the WNCL one-day tournament. The competition will take place before the WBBL season with each side playing four matches and the top four teams moving to the semi-finals.The timing of the tournament means it will run alongside the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh so the Australia players won’t be involved which naturally opens up spots in teams while overseas stars are not expected to feature prominently.A complicating factor will be around ACT who have a number of players contracted to WBBL clubs including key batter Katie Mack who plays for Adelaide Strikers.With the WBBL being trimmed to match the BBL in an attempt to manage the increasing workloads of the game’s leading players, ensure overseas names still want to join, encouraging growth in crowds and to cut out non-primetime matches, there was a strong push to ensure that there was not an overall reduction in matches for state cricketers.The restructuring of the women’s domestic programme was announced at the launch of CA’s Women’s and Girls Action Plan last month but since then the stance of Victoria and New South Wales has required reworking of the original plans.”Cricket NSW has always been committed to the success of the Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder and the tournament announced today will help both of our clubs in their quest for WBBL success and to produce players for Australia,” New South Wales chief executive Lee Germon said.”That enhanced player pathway is in the best interests of Australian Cricket and provides further opportunity for the continued success of our national women’s teams.”The delay in confirming the structure of the competition also meant that state contracts, which would normally have been confirmed by the end of April, were put on hold amid the uncertainty.The new T20 competition will raise the average female domestic player salary for 2024-25 to AU$163,322 while the current WBBL salary cap has been maintained meaning no reduction in player payments.

Will Pucovski, the Australian top-order batter, will play county cricket for the first time in April after signing a short-term deal with Leicestershire to cover for Wiaan Mulder.Pucovski, 25, is widely considered one of Australia’s brightest young talents and made his Test debut three years ago, playing against India at the SCG. But he has faced multiple setbacks in his fledgling career, suffering regular concussions and also taking leave from the game to manage his mental health.He has had a quiet Sheffield Shield season for Victoria, playing five matches and passing 50 only once, but averages 43.94 across his first-class career and made 62 in his maiden Test innings, opening the batting alongside David Warner.With Mulder unavailable at the start of the English summer while finishing the domestic season in South Africa, Leicestershire have brought Pucovski in for the first five matches of the County Championship season. Aos 15 minutos do primeiro tempo no confronto que classificou o Tricolor para a grande decisão do torneio continental, o meio-campista sofreu um entorse no joelho durante uma disputa de bola e teve que ser substituído pelo jovem Pablo Maia. A lesão foi diagnosticada após exame de imagem realizado pelos médicos do Tricolor nesta sexta-feira (9), no CT da Barra Funda. Seguindo a programação do departamento médico, o jogador já iniciou o processo de recuperação com os profissionais de fisioterapia do Reffis.

Neves foi contratado em 2021 e disputou 40 jogos pelo São Paulo, sendo 28 nesta temporada. Seu contrato com o São Paulo somente até o fim deste ano. Para adquiri-lo em definitivo, o Tricolor terá de desembolsar US$ 1,7 milhão (cerca de R$ 8,7 milhões) e a gestão Julio casares já notificou o Nacional, do Uruguai, que realizará o pagamento.

É a quarta vez que o uruguaio se contunde nesta atual temporada. Em março, ficou de fora por seis jogos após sofrer um estiramento na panturrilha. Em junho, voltou a ser desfalque por sentir dores no mesmo local. No fim de agosto, deixou o Tricolor por duas partidas devido a um trauma no tornozelo.

É o sexto jogador são-paulino a desfalcar o elenco do técnico Rogério Ceni por contusão. Além dele, estão em recuperação Moreira (cirurgia no lesão no menisco do joelho direito), Nikão (avulsão no adutor esquerdo), Arboleda (cirurgia no tornozelo esquerdo), Caio (cirurgia no joelho direito) e André Anderson (dores musculares).

O Peixe negociou quatro jogadores na temporada, sendo que a principal venda foi a do zagueiro Kaiky para o Almería, da Espanha, por R$ 37,5 milhões. Além dele, o clube vendeu Marinho para o Flamengo, Léo Baptistão, também para o Almería, e Bruninha, para o Gotham FC, dos Estados Unidos.

O Santos lucrou também mais de R$ 10 milhões por bônus de negociações feitas em outros anos, com as vendas de Kaio Jorge e Luan Peres. Em relação ao mecanismo de solidariedade o Peixe lucrou cerca de R$ 5 milhões, sendo a maior fatia pela transferência de Emerson Palmieri para o West Ham.

A negociação de Alan Patrick ao Internacional (400 mil Euros além de perdão de dívida de 1,5 milhão de Euros) também deve render um valor ao Peixe, que tinha pouco mais de 1% pelo mecanismo de solidariedade. A venda de Caju ao Aris Limassol, do Chipre, também rendeu frutos para o Santos (cerca de R$ 500 mil).

A receita estimada em todos os negócios chegou a R$ 67,9 milhões.

Newcastle United will be offered three players in exchange for Alexander Isak by a huge European club this summer, according to a new transfer claim.

Newcastle sweating over Isak's future

Isak is enjoying a fantastic season for the Magpies, standing out as not only their star but also one of the best players in the Premier League currently, causing defenders nightmares with his pace, finishing and all-round game.

The 25-year-old has scored 19 league goals in 2024/25 to date, with only Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland ahead of him in the charts, which says a huge amount about the sort of company he is now in.

Isak’s blistering form is understandably seeing him being linked with a move away from Newcastle this summer, however, with some huge clubs battling to snap him up. Chelsea and Arsenal have both been mentioned as potential suitors to sign the Sweden international, while Liverpool are also reportedly pushing to sign him in a possible £148m deal.

The Magpies are understandably desperate to keep their most prized asset at St James’ Park for as long as possible, but there will be concern that he could eye a move elsewhere, feeling he could reach another level at an even bigger club.

Newcastle to be offered attacking trio in Isak swap deal

According to RMC Sport [via NUFC Blog], Paris Saint-Germain are ready to offer Marco Asensio, Goncalo Ramos and Randal Kolo Muani to Newcastle this summer, in a swap deal that allows them to sign Isak.

The bottom line is that the Magpies would surely rather retain the services of the Swede than lose him, even if it means three players heading in the opposite direction.

Granted, he hasn’t been without injury problems, so there is a tiny element of sense in cashing in on him, but he needs to be viewed as the fulcrum of Eddie Howe’s attack for the foreseeable future.

Should the worst happen and Isak move to PSG, however, Newcastle would at least be bringing in three top-quality players who have proven themselves at a high level throughout their respective careers, with the Ligue 1 champions currently paying the trio a combined £383,000 per week.

In Ramos, the Magpies could have a particularly exciting option, having been hailed by Ian Wright after a stunning hat-trick for Portugal against Switzerland at the 2022 World Cup:

“It was very impressive, he played very well, scored a hat trick and takes all the headlines and rightly so. He held the ball up brilliantly but the first goal it set the stall for him. ‘He scores a goal that he’s not meant to score (his first goal). He hits it so well, he’s not meant to score that side of the goal but that kind of set them on the road really.”

Meanwhile, Asensio is a three-time Champions League winner from his Real Madrid days, and is currently doing well on loan at Aston Villa, recently scoring a late winner against Chelsea in the Premier League.

Newcastle United aren’t exactly in amazing form heading into some tough games in March which includes an opportunity to pick up some honours in the EFL Trophy final versus Liverpool.

Indeed, it’s been very hit-and-miss as of late for Eddie Howe’s Magpies, with home wins against Arsenal and Nottingham Forest in league and cup soured by losses to Manchester City and Arne Slot’s convincing league leaders on the road, alongside the club’s recent FA Cup exit to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Danny Welbeck and former employee, Yankuba Minteh, broke Toon hearts with an extra-time winner for the Seagulls, as Newcastle just didn’t have enough in their tank come the end of the 120-minute marathon, which wasn’t helped by Anthony Gordon’s petulant dismissal.

This reckless red card for Gordon means he will now likely miss his club’s trip to Wembley, although Howe and Co are apparently going to appeal this sending off in a bid to try and get the 24-year-old back for the final.

Regardless, it was a poor showing from the ex-Everton man against Fabian Hurzeler’s determined visitors, as he failed to complete a single dribble, before being given his marching orders late on after a scuffle with Jan Paul van Hecke.

Away from this incident, Gordon does have nine goals and six assists from 34 games to shout about this campaign, but potentially missing out on the upcoming final against his ex-club’s fiercest rivals will be a huge kick in the teeth.

He will surely return to the starting XI very soon, but Howe’s side would no doubt be boosted in attack more if they had a former flop on the scene who has resurrected his playing days away from St James’ Park.

Newcastle flop is now just as exciting as Gordon

The Magpies attack at full throttle this season has been an absolute treat to watch, with Alexander Isak firing in 22 goals in all competitions from the main striker spot, alongside Jacob Murphy also chipping in with some meaningful contributions next to the standout Swede.

But, Newcastle would potentially be elevated to another level if former flop Florian Thauvin was back and at his current excellent best, with his original stint on Tyneside completely forgettable when amassing just one goal from 16 games.

Now, however, he’s a different beast altogether playing out in Italy with Udinese with his goal and assist haul across 2024/25 to date not far off Gordon’s ever-rising amount, with his own tally up at eight strikes and five assists from fewer matches (25), which included a curled strike hitting the back of the net in December.

Resting and preserving players is not on India’s mind as they prepare to face Netherlands in their second Super 12s match at the SCG. For a side that lost Jasprit Bumrah on the eve of the tournament and whose allrounder has to be handled with care, this faith in everybody’s fitness is welcome news. India’s bowling coach Paras Mhambrey also suggested R Ashwin will be India’s main spinner more often than Yuzvendra Chahal because of his batting.It would not have been a surprise if India had rested Hardik Pandya seeing how their next match is across the country in Perth and the turnaround is short. However, Mhambrey said Hardik is keen to play every game. “Hardik wants to play all the games,” Mhambrey said. “That is important. And we are not looking at whom to rest, there is no such thought about any particular player. Hardik is a very important player for us. He adds a lot of balance: he is both bowling and batting. Other than that, his attitude on the field is important. Like you saw in the last match, he played a crucial innings. Yes, Virat [Kohli] finished it off, but to recognise the fact that the pressure will shift to the opposition if the game goes deep, you need experience. So much of Virat’s performance’s credit should be given to Hardik as well. Rest is not even a discussion. Every match is important.”Related

Mhambrey was pleased with the way Mohammed Shami has shaped up coming out of Covid-19. “It [his recovery] started off when he went to the National Cricket Academy (NCA),” Mhambrey said. “We wanted to have a look at how he felt, what shape he was in, assess the loads and numbers there. And whatever feedback we’ve got, we are pretty happy about it.”He is a very experienced and seasoned bowler. You know what you are going to get from him, that’s sure. But the important bit was, how he turned up after the Covid. And we’re pretty happy with the recovery. At the NCA, whatever feedback and reports we’ve got, we’re pretty happy about it. Out here, he was in a good space. Whatever discussions we’ve had, he was looking forward to this tournament. And starting with the first over that he bowled in Australia, he looked in great rhythm. And that also gave us the confidence of knowing what you are going to get from Shami. He is a champion bowler, no doubt.”Mhambrey was asked if Hardik’s presence might give them a reason to play an extra batter. “That will totally depend on the conditions that we play [in],” Mhambrey said. “It’s good that Hardik does give you that four-over option, and that’s what we wanted. He brings a lot of balance to the team once he does that. And he’s also been very effective for us. He’s picked up wickets and that’s very important for us. Speaking of combinations, the pre-tournament expectation was that Ashwin would play against sides that had left-hand batters in the middle order but Mhambrey said the offspinner’s batting tipped scales in his favour regardless, and that Chahal would get in when conditions demand an “additional spinner”.”We are obviously looking at the balance of the team, the batters we are playing against,” he said. “You also got to look at your match-ups. There’s no particular conditions that you are going to look at, you don’t expect to have turning tracks over here. Maybe, you will have some tracks that will help a little bit of spin: we will look into it. We are playing in some of the games second [on a used pitch]. So as we go into the tournament, there will be a lot of wear and tear on those wickets. When we feel having an additional spinner will help, we will go for it.”When asked what all they look at when they decide between the two, Mhambrey said: “We look at the batting combination of the teams we are playing. You do your own homework: which players are struggling, which type of bowlers their batters are struggling against. So that is one aspect. The other thing which works in favour of Ashwin is that he can contribute with the bat. So we will look at both these things.”When you choose Ashwin, you look at what he brings to the team in terms of the balance and composition. But every venue poses a different challenge, every wicket will be different, and we might have to alter our combination by looking at that particular wicket. If need be, we can even play four or even five seamers. And we are quite fluid on that front.”
