Emery’s signing has now cost Arsenal over £46m and needs to be sold

Arsenal’s recruitment under boss Mikel Arteta has been exemplary in recent times, with the club signing players who have made a huge impact on the first-team squad.

As demonstrated already this season, Riccardo Calafiori is the latest in a long list of additions who have impressed at the Emirates, nailing down the starting left-back role and producing some memorable moments – including his wonder strike against Manchester City.

Jurrien Timber is a player who has been plagued with injuries since his transfer to North London, but this season he’s been able to finally showcase his quality in the Premier League.

The Dutchman has started seven games in a row for the Gunners, even forcing Ben White out of the squad in recent weeks – a sign of how impressive he has been since his move from Ajax last summer.

The aforementioned pair are just two examples of the club’s excellent work behind the scenes, with multiple other players proving to be money well spent so far this season.

Arsenal's key performers this season

Brazilian centre-back Gabriel has continued where he left off last season for Arsenal, starting defensively whilst also making a huge impact in the opposition’s penalty area.

He’s been part of a backline that has already kept five clean sheets this season, helping the Gunners get off to an excellent start in the Premier League alongside the Champions League.

The 26-year-old has already scored twice this season, with both his efforts coming in crucial meetings with rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.

As for Leandro Trossard, he’s enjoyed some successful moments this campaign, but also one to forget, receiving two yellow cards and subsequently being sent off against Pep Guardiola’s side – with his second caution coming after kicking the ball away just weeks after Declan Rice committed the same offence.

However, the Belgian has registered two goals and an assist in all competitions so far this season, providing a reliable option at the top end of the pitch for Arteta’s side.

Leandro Trossard

Both players will be integral to the Gunners’ attempts to secure a first league title in over 20 years this season, but they both currently earn less than one player who hasn’t featured for the club in nearly two years after arriving under Unai Emery.

Kieran Tierney's total cost to Arsenal

Left-back Kieran Tierney arrived in North London with high expectations after his £25m transfer from Scottish side Celtic back in the summer of 2019, but unfortunately for both parties, the move hasn’t gone as they would’ve anticipated.

The 27-year-old – who Ashley Cole dubbed a “warrior” – was a consistent first-team performer upon his move in 2019/20, but since has seen his game time decrease with injuries plaguing the defender in recent times.

Arsenal'sKieranTierneyreacts

Up until August 2023, Tierney had made 124 appearances for Arteta’s side, but in a bid to regain his fitness, he was sent on loan to Spanish side Real Sociedad last season, featuring 20 times in LaLiga.

He’s yet to feature upon his return to the Emirates, with yet another injury preventing him from making any appearances, with the defender still pocketing a hefty wage in the process.

The former Celtic star is on a reported £110k-per-week in North London – a figure that is higher than both Gabriel and Trossard, who currently earn £100k and £90k-per-week respectively.

When combining Tierney’s total earnings from his time at Arsenal with his £25m transfer fee, he’s cost the club around £46m, which works out at around £370k per appearance since his move five years ago.

Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney.

Given his current injury record and lack of impact, Arteta must look to offload the defender at the next available opportunity with his funds massively burning a hole in the club’s wage bill.

The funds generated could be used to hand his side with the best possible chance of finally ending their two decade wait for a Premier League triumph.

Hampshire hold their nerve to win two-run thriller after Tom Prest impresses

Notts go from 66 for 1 to 123 all out as defending champions are scuppered on worn pitch

David Hopps25-Aug-2021No side has ever successfully defended the domestic T20 title and so it proved once more as Notts Outlaws fell two runs short in an extraordinary low-scoring match before more than 14,000 stunned supporters at Trent Bridge.Notts, all-powerful, strutting Notts, masters of all they survey at Trent Bridge, playing their 10th home quarter-final in 12 years, failed to chase down a target of 126 despite being more than halfway there with only one wicket down. It was a well-used surface – by necessity not design, such is the demand on international squares these days – but even allowing for that Hampshire’s escape act was quite spectacular. The most pressing question in this Blast quarter-final was which Hampshire would turn up? The one that foundered at the bottom of South Group for much of the summer or the side that won their last five matches – finishing by chasing a target of 185 in 14.1 overs – to squeeze into the last eight on run rate? The answer appeared to be eminently clear: it was the lame version. Presented with a gripping, fortnight-old surface, which was far removed from the run-fest pitches that have been an established feature of Trent Bridge T20 nights over the years, they were awash with doubt. This appeared to be the Hampshire which became used to defeat until James Vince, their one English batter of true quality, ran into a rich vein of form.Okay, so Tom Prest, an 18-year-old in his first season, had assembled a cogent response with 44 from 34 balls, and James Fuller had also offered up some lusty blows in his 30. But Hampshire’s 125 for 9 felt impoverished, especially when Notts raced to 66 for 1 by the eighth over with Joe Clarke producing the most elegant innings of the night. How wrong that proved to be. Hampshire’s resilience came to the fore yet again as Notts batters were unable to adapt to the demands of a holding pitch and the left-arm spin of Liam Dawson, in particular, became a tough proposition. The final over came down to three needed with the final pair at the crease. Matt Carter had bulldozed two sixes off the penultimate over, from Chris Wood, to put Notts one blow away from victory, but the last man, Dane Paterson, was on strike against Brad Wheal. Paterson failed to find a single from the first three balls – Vince fumbled a chance to run out Carter at the non-striker’s end when he was sent back on the second ball of the over – and then Paterson nicked a drive to the keeper to spark Hampshire celebrations.Notts have lost only three of those home quarter-finals – and Hampshire, the victors on each occasion, can now add 2021 to 2012 and 2014.Steven Mullaney, Notts captain, has stood in gamely for the Australian Dan Christian all season, and he knew this had got away. “It was a total we should definitely have chased down,” he said. “We knew the pitch was used. There has been a lot of cricket here this year, whether it be the Hundred or internationally, but that was well under par. I thought this was a 150-160 pitch.”Vince, his opposite number, said: “After seven or eight overs it was looking a mile off, but all season we have found a way to come back and this was no different. It was an immense effort.”Tom Prest top-scored with 44 from 34 balls•Getty ImagesNotts’ start showed few inhibitions. Alex Hales plonked Dawson’s slow left-arm to long-on, but even when Ben Duckett was run out – beaten by Fuller’s direct hit from mid-off as he failed to negotiate a way round the bowler, Scott Currie, approaching him like a learner driver to a roundabout – it did not raise alarms. But Tom Moores, a most unsubtle of batters, was lbw swinging to leg as Mason Crane turned a legspinner, and then Dawson struck twice in two balls to leave Notts 85 for 5: Clarke falling for 42 to a leading edge, Samit Patel creeping out of his crease to be stumped down the leg side. After Joe Weatherley snapped up an excellent catch at backward square to remove Ben Slater, Notts again lost two in two, this time to Currie, as Calvin Harrison and Mullaney both lacked the muscle to clear the leg-side boundary. When you’re in a pickle, call for a couple of big fellas, piano moving, ditch digging and baling out innings a speciality, and Notts were down to that in the shape of Carter and Luke Fletcher. But Fletcher lost his leg stump and Carter lost the strike which turned out to be just as costly.A nerve-jangling finish disguised the fact that after the glitz of the Hundred, for much of the night, for all the growing tension, this was not the sort of contest the Blast needed if it is to catch the wave.”The innocence has been exhausted. I think we’ve lost the ability to be blown away by music.” So said Brian Wilson, the American singer-songwriter and record producer, co-founder of the Beach Boys. The warning holds not just for music, but for cricket, where the innocence is not exhausted, just the pitches, as the output grows ever larger. Squares at the major grounds are under considerable strain, especially from TV which demands central pitches that are in line with the camera gantry. As they have all season, Notts’ trio of spinners – Harrison, Carter and Patel – held sway, their return of 5 for 70 in 12 overs continuing the dominance that sees them finish with a collective 54 wickets this season.Vince made 9, top-edging a sweep against Patel to short fine leg, his first stroke of intent. D’Arcy Short, his opening partner, and also potentially destructive, perished to his first attacking shot, too, a loose ball from Dane Paterson which he clouted to short midwicket.Joe Weatherley was another batter to fall to a top-edged sweep, this time against Carter. When Hampshire finally did get some pace on the ball, it turned out to be Harrison’s quicker ball, which rocketed into Lewis McManus’ stumps; he might have been lbw to the ball before. Dawson patted back a return catch to Harrison, first ball. The match looked as good as over.Fuller awoke Hampshire’s innings, using his feet to drive Harrison and slog-sweeping Steven Mullaney for six. Prest, who had worked the ball around with a maturity that belied his years, departed in a burst of activity: a splay-legged straight six against Paterson, a simple drop by Hales at long on, and a catch by Harrison as he struck a full toss to deep square. It appeared to be a young player making his mark in a losing cause. Nobody imagined that he had just played a match-defining innings. He should now get chance to play another – because it is Hampshire who are going to Finals Day.

Fatima Sana, Nashra Sandhu and Omaima Sohail guide Pakistan Women to victory

After Knight’s 88, West Indies Women collapse from 171 for 2 to 210 all out

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Jul-2021
Fatima Sana and Nashra Sandhu’s four-wicket hauls guided Pakistan Women to victory against the West Indies Women in the fourth ODI in North Sound on Friday. The visitors chased down the target of 211 with four wickets in hand and nine balls to spare, with Omaima Sohail top-scoring with an 89-ball 61. West Indies Women, though, had already sealed the series and lead 3-1.Asked to bat first after a delayed start, the hosts rode on Kyshona Knight’s 88 off 140 balls and captain Stafaine Taylor’s 77-ball 49 before the team suffered a collapse. Medium-pacer Sana struck early to dismiss both openers Hayles Matthews and Deandra Dottin inside eight overs, but Knight and Taylor put on 142 runs together to stabilise the innings. It was also the highest partnership for the third wicket in ODIs for the West Indies Women.Taylor’s dismissal in the 40th over triggered a collapse as the West Indies went from 171 for 2 to eventually be bowled out for 210 in 49.4 overs. Sana was the pick of the Pakistan bowlers, claiming 4 for 30 – including two maidens – in her eight overs. Left-arm spinner Sandhu took 4 for 49 in 9.4 overs.Despite losing top-order batters Muneeba Ali and captain Javeria Khan early in the chase, Sidra Ameen and Sohail ensured Pakistan crossed the finish line. Shakira Selman and Mathews picked up two wickets apiece for the West Indies. However, it wasn’t enough to threaten the visitors.”I think we fell short by about 15 to 20 runs,” Anisa Mohammed, West Indies Women’s vice-captain, told after the loss.”At the beginning of the series, we kept saying we wanted to score over 225 that would give them some competition, and we just fell short today. The pitch was a bit damp at the start, so our batters found it a bit hard to score but having Kyshona batting really well and seeing us through, I think just in the middle, coming down to the end we lost too many wickets at crucial times. As bowlers, we weren’t as consistent as we should have been.”

BCCI to donate 2000 oxygen concentrators towards India's Covid relief

The BCCI will contribute 2000 10-litre oxygen concentrators towards India’s efforts in fighting against the Covid-19 pandemic. India is currently facing a second wave of infections, recording 250,000 new cases every day on average for the last seven days.”Over the next few months, the board will distribute the concentrators across India with the hope that critical medical aid and care will be provided to the needy patients and this initiative will reduce the havoc unleashed by the pandemic,” the BCCI stated in a release.Sourav Ganguly, the BCCI president, said the board acknowledges the role the medical and healthcare community has played and continues to play in dealing with the pandemic. “They have truly been frontline warriors and have done whatever possible to shield us,” he was quoted as saying in the release. “The oxygen concentrators will provide immediate relief to those affected and will help in their speedy recovery.”The BCCI secretary Jay Shah too hoped that the board’s effort would “help in narrowing the demand-supply gap that has been generated across the country” and urged everyone eligible to get vaccinated. In March 2020, during the first wave, the BCCI had contributed Rs 51 crore to the ‘PM Cares Fund’.Meanwhile, Pandya brothers – Hardik and Krunal – are also dispatching oxygen concentrators to the centres dealing with the crisis.”This new batch of Oxygen Concentrators are being dispatched to Covid centres with prayers in our hearts for everyones speedy recovery,” Krunal tweeted on Monday.

An oxygen concentrator is a portable and cost-effective source of medical oxygen. It operates by drawing air from the environment to deliver continuous, clean and concentrated oxygen to needy patients.

Offer made: Man Utd make £40m+ bid to sign Europa League winner after talks

As the transfer window approaches the deadline, Manchester United are still looking to round off an excellent summer and have reportedly tabled an offer worth over £40m to sign a Europa League winner.

Man Utd transfer news

Welcoming Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee, the Red Devils, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Dan Ashworth have so far enjoyed a solid transfer window, bolstering Erik ten Hag's backline and offensive options. Those at Old Trafford were instantly rewarded for their business on the opening day of their Premier League campaign too, when Zirkzee scored the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Fulham.

Yet, even after welcoming such reinforcements, Manchester United remain without a potential long-term replacement for Casemiro, who struggled to keep up with the pace of the Premier League last season.

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro

Of course, the main name mentioned on that front has been Manuel Ugarte. The Red Devils are reportedly advancing with talks to sign the midfielder, having already agreed personal terms. But whilst they remain without an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain, those at Old Trafford have reportedly explored another option.

According to reports, which have been relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester United submitted an offer worth €50m (£43m) to sign Ederson from Atalanta after talks, however, the Serie A side instantly turned the bid down.

Man Utd won the lottery with "genius" star worth 12x more than Eriksen

The incredible talent is one of the club’s best signings in years.

2 ByJack Salveson Holmes Aug 22, 2024

The offer came Atalanta's way during a meeting with Manchester United chiefs in Italy, which was initially meant to be about sorting paperwork regarding Rasmus Hoijlund's move to Old Trafford last summer before the subject and subsequent bid for Ederson was reportedly brought up.

A recent Europa League winner, the Brazilian could certainly solve Ten Hag's Casemiro problem, but as things stand, he remains an Atalanta player.

"Machine" Ederson is arguably better than Casemiro and Ugarte

If Manchester United saw their chase to sign Ugarte fall apart and leave them with no choice but to go all out for Ederson, then it could arguably be a blessing in disguise. The Brazilian played a pivotal part in Atalanta's Europa League campaign, including in impressive victories over Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen, as the Italians became the only side to defeat Xabi Alonso's side last season.

What instantly stands out is Ederson's ability to progress play, with an impressive 214 progressive passes to his name last season, over 100 more than both Ugarte and Casemiro managed. As United look to step on the front foot every week, that ability would quickly prove to be vital.

Dubbed a "machine" by Football Transfers' Carlo Garganese following his display against Leverkusen in the Europa League final, Ederson could slot straight into Ten Hag's side. Alas, with just over a week left until the transfer window slams shut for the summer, he is currently on course to remain an Atalanta player.

'Unacceptable to tie a game' – Lionel Messi annoyed by draws as demanding mindset of Inter Miami superstar revealed by MLS team-mate

Eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi has not become the most decorated player of all-time by accepting mediocrity, with the Argentina superstar expecting to win every time that he takes to the field. That passion and drive continues to burn bright at 37 years of age.

Messi was able to help Inter Miami to a historic Supporters’ Shield triumph in 2024, as they posted a new regular season high in the points department, but ultimate MLS Cup glory proved elusive. The South American GOAT was demanding more from himself and those alongside him in Florida, with Gressel explaining the mindset that makes Messi different.

WHAT GRESSEL SAID

USMNT star Gressel has told the podcast: “It's demanding [in the locker room with Messi]. You're talking about the player with the most wins in the history of the game. They're coming in and they're expecting the same, and you as a teammate, you kind of have to get accustomed to that and get used to that with Messi, [Luis] Suarez, [Sergio] Busquets and [Jordi] Alba. It's unacceptable to tie a game, as simple as that. We tied a game earlier in the year and I remember him being really, really upset in the locker room, he's like, ‘We shouldn't tie, we can't tie’.”

Gressel added on how Messi and Co get their message across when it comes to pursuing perfection: “When it comes to the game or when it comes to being serious, it's being serious and it's time. If you're not doing your part, you're getting it, like, you're hearing it. You notice they're not content. [Messi has] addressed other guys directly, he's more so quiet, but you have guys like Luis, who's a little bit more emotional. He's more outgoing in a sense, emotionally outgoing like that, so you hear more from him. Messi will certainly come up to you and will talk to you more so rather than be in your face about things. So we definitely kind of see that demand.”

As it happened – Australia vs India, 4th Test, Brisbane, 1st day

*Most recent entry will appear at the top, please refresh your page for the latest updates. All times are local.

5.30pm local/1pm IST: Stumps

Australia will be pleased with the day. It didn’t begin particularly well, with two wickets, but India gave them a sniff by dropping Labuschagne early and he’s anchored a positive innings on the day one. India were hamstrung with their best two bowlers going out, and the new faces might have felt like they were doing a decent job until Australia flipped the pressure on them through flowing knocks from Smith, Wade, Green and Paine right at the end. By the end of the day, India looked like a fading team, and the hosts have capitalised on that. India have also ended the day a bowler short. It could be a long day tomorrow.

4.30pm local/12pm IST: The pitch

Getty Images

It’s been a difficult pitch to assess from afar. Natarajan’s two wickets were deliveries that kicked off the surface and got big on two pull shots. The only real instance of that any time previously was the delivery off which Labuschagne was dropped earlier in the day. And these all came off different bowlers, and form differing lines. So what do you put it down to? The range of pace? The likelihood of a bowler getting it to grip? Cracks in the pitch? And in that case, the cracks would have to be on both the left- and right-handers’ sides. Which sounds far fetched so early in a Test. Perhaps the only characteristic that an be gauged confidently is its slow nature.

3.56pm local/11.26am IST

2.52pm local/10.22am IST: Tea

India left to rue another sequence of missed catches. They got Smith in somewhat fortunate fashion as he flicked a half-volley to Rohit Sharma, but the drops of Labuschagne not along after – one simple one and one half-chance – will grate on them as he sets his sights on a century. There is precedent for fighting back, but you don’t want to be fighting back all the time, especially when it is avoidable. The unavoidables are racking up in any case – Navdeep Saini has complained of groin pain.

1.28pm local/8.58am IST: Scoring rates

ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Big Australian names like Ricky Ponting, Allan Border and Glenn McGrath have spoken throughout this series about Australia’s scoring rates, and about their intents. Our stats man Gaurav Sundararaman has been digging around to see how the patterns have been. And he found the numbers from the screenshot above, which are Australia’s scoring rates in various series since the start of 2000. Many of the slowest scoring ones have been over the last few years. A reflection of changing pitches, or the uncertainty they’ve carried with their batting line-ups in that period? Hard to tell, because it’s not limited to Australia – those numbers are pretty much par across teams.

1pm local/8.30am IST

12pm local/7.30am IST: Lunch, 65 for 2

Getty Images

A resurgence from Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith to blunt India’s good start with the ball then – with a 48-run stand after India got rid of both Australian openers fairly early on. All bowlers have had a go and, to their credit, have been disciplined even as these two batsmen try to haul the game in Australia’s direction. The boundaries have come, but they have been rare. They look solid, but haven’t been completely dominant. But no one needs reminding that this can change very quickly with Australia’s best two batsmen. Some work to do for the visitors in the second session.

11.40am local/7.10am IST: The lines, and Smith

Getty Images

A significant change in bowling personnel has also meant a significant change in bowling plans, it seems. India’s leg-trap, the line that has proved both an attacking and defensive option during the course of this series, hasn’t been on show too much this session. The line seems to have shifted outside off and wider in that direction. Perhaps that is to do with the pace and styles of the bowlers coming in, or it could just be a matter of them not having trained for it alongside the main bowling pack.Whatever it is, Steven Smith is enjoying it. Particularly against Thakur, off whom he has picked up all five of his boundaries so far.

11am local/6.30am IST: The end of the first hour, 35 for 2

India came into the Test with two debutants, T Natarajan and Washington Sundar, who were both only on this tour for limited-overs cricket. They stayed on as nets bowlers and with Bumrah, Ashwin, and Jadeja all missing this game, they found spots in the team alongside Shardul Thakur. This meant that Mohammed Siraj, who debuted in the second Test, was the most experienced bowler in the line-up. And the de facto leader made the early breakthrough, getting Warner for the second time in two Test with one that jagged away in the corridor. Thakur’s innocuous floater into Marcus Harris’ pads, his first ball in Tests since hobbling off after 10 balls on debut in 2018, proved to be a wicket ball. Harris chipped that straight to square leg. That opening hour is India’s, for sure, and the discipline has been impressive. Now they need to separate Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith, who are looking good.

Nathan Lyon: I’ll continue bowling the way I do – with a smile on my face

Australia has always been the land of the legspinner but Lyon has shown the more conventional art can succeed, writes Daniel Brettig in his piece about Nathan Lyon who is set to play 100 Tests for Australia today. Lyon is four wickets away from 400.”I have had a chance to reflect on it, because when I first made my Test debut I thought ‘jeez how amazing is this’ – I was very grateful and humble to play one Test for Australia, but after completing my 99th a couple of days ago, and looking forward to Friday, it’s been very exciting,” Lyon said. “I look at the 12 other guys who have played more than 100 Test matches of cricket for Australia and they’re pure legends in my eyes. Not just for Australia, but all around the world.”I’m going to pinch myself each and every day to see my name up against those fellows and being the 13th player to do so, it’s pretty amazing. I’ve tried in the past not to look too far ahead, but I’m pretty excited about this one. I’m really hoping we can play the positive brand of cricket that we know we can play and walk away with a series win.”

My colleague Gaurav Sundararaman has told the story of India’s attack with those words. That is the collective experience of India’s bowling attack today. Ashwin out with back spasm, Bumrah out as expected. Two debutants. India’s fifth, maybe sixth choice bowler in the fast bowling roster, is leading the pack today: Mohammed Siraj, all of two Tests old.Fun fact: India haven’t had a left-arm seamer in their XI since Zaheer Khan retired in 2014. And here’s a list of the number of players India have used during a series. They haven’t had to use 20 since 1960.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

9.26am local/4.56am IST: Debuts galore

So we have spotted T Natarajan and Washington Sundar being handed caps in the Indian huddle. A big day for the Tamil Nadu team-mates. Natarajan becomes the fastest man to get debuts in all formats after starting off in one – he made an ODI debut on December 2, having not been part of the plans for the series at all until Varun Charkravarthy – another TN player – was injured. He becomes India’s 300th Test player.Washington Sundar is in the same boat – only around as a nets bowler on this tour but suddenly having to fill in. A decent batsman at the first-class level, apart from his primary skill at bowling offbreaks. We suspect he replaces Ravindra Jadeja in a straight swap.

Good morning and welcome back to our coverage of the final game of an explosive, utterly dramatic series. There’s hardly been a day of this Test series that hasn’t been sustained quality all round. And perhaps the only argument against that is all the peripheral drama on the final day of the Sydney Test; but there have been arguments, non-stop and loud, around all of that for the last few days. Today is the chance to make it all about the sensational cricket again. And there will, perhaps, even a deliberate de-escalation from Tim Paine and his men who hold the advantage in many ways coming into this match; India’s medical table has continued to pile up, so much so that they had to let go of their new-found tradition of naming the XI a day prior to the start. It is touch and go for many big names today – Ashwin, Bumrah, Agarwal. Add to that the fact that his game is at the Gabba, where Australia haven’t lost since 1988. Their prime batsmen are in form again, and their bowlers will be have another crack at a softened batting line-up.That isn’t to say India are completely out of it, of course. Each time they’ve been down this series, they have proved capable of bouncing back. At 1-1 coming into this game, they are still in possession of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. And 1-1 is all it’ll need to be for them to hold onto it till the next series. The top order’s getting starts, fifties, and occupying the crease solidly over the last couple of innings – will a century finally come from one of the top three? One of many intriguing questions for after we know the answer to the big one – do they have 12 men on their feet to put on a teamsheet today?

Arsenal to launch swap-deal bid for £160,000-per-week Zubimendi alternative

Arsenal are to make a player-plus-cash offer for one £160,000-per-week star after growing annoyed with Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi.

Arsenal identify Zubimendi as key transfer target for midfield

Reports in the last few weeks have suggested that the La Liga midfielder, who made 45 appearances in all competitions as a mainstay of Sociedad's midfield last season, is a key target for Arsenal as Edu Gaspar looks to bolster the engine room.

Mikel Arteta could lose Thomas Partey this summer, with the north Londoners looking likely to sell him. He's entered the final 12 months of his contract at Arsenal, and suffered from various injury problems last season which limited him to around 14 Premier League appearances.

Some media sources state that Partey has held productive talks over a move to Saudi Arabia, and if he does end up departing in the coming weeks, then the Gunners will need a replacement for him.

They've been linked with a succession of names, but Zubimendi is believed to be a leading midfield target for Arsenal, as Arteta seeks to bring in a partner/alternative to Declan Rice. His contract includes a £51 million release clause, and Arsenal apparently have no problem paying Zubimendi's valuation.

The hurdle in their way is Zubimendi's willingness to make a Premier League move and agreeing personal terms, as it is believed that the Spaniard is happy where he is right now.

“Midfield is still a high priority, and we know that Arsenal have had a long-standing interest in Martin Zubimendi," said journalist Ben Jacobs to GiveMeSport.

“And the challenge there is about persuading the player to leave Real Sociedad because he's very much in love with the club and the culture, lifestyle, so he's settled. But because he's in his mid 20s, not early 20s or a teenager, it's kind of a crossroad, because once you turn 26, even though that's your peak, a lot of clubs like to buy a little bit younger. So we wait and see whether Arsenal move in that direction.”

Arsenal to make player-plus-cash bid for Guimaraes

Football Transfers back that Zubimendi himself is holding up the potential transfer, as the 25-year-old is yet to reply to a wage offer which Arsenal have made.

This is said to be frustrating Arteta's side, and they've now turned their attention to Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes as a result. The £160,000-per-week Brazil international, who racked up seven goals and eight assists in 37 league starts for Newcastle last season, is one of Eddie Howe's most crucial figureheads.

However, their PSR situation could force Newcastle to sell, or at least entertain potential swap deals, as Arsenal look to strike a move for below the 26-year-old's £100 million clause. FT write in their headline that Arsenal are to make a player-plus-cash offer for Guimaraes, and this is something the Magpies could be open to if their price tag isn't met.

Oleksandr Zinchenko, Emile Smith Rowe, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Eddie Nketiah and Partey are listed as potential swap deal nominees by the report, as all are expected to depart the Emirates this summer.

Man City "trying" to sign academy prodigy with more than one goal per game

Manchester City are reportedly "trying" to land one of the most lethal goalscorers in Europe at academy level, as they look to the future in this summer's transfer window.

What next for Erling Haaland?

Arguably the most lethal striker in world football, Erling Haaland scored 27 Premier League goals last season as he helped Manchester City to their fourth consecutive Premier League title under Pep Guardiola's stewardship.

Having spent two seasons in the English top flight, he has grabbed 63 goals in 66 games as well as adding 13 assists, and is scoring at roughly a goal every 85 minutes, a record that no other player in the competition's history can match.

For context, Sergio Aguero took 108 minutes between finding the back of the net, while Thierry Henry took nearly two hours, by which time the Norweigian freak of nature would be already sniffing out his next.

Under contract at the Etihad until 2027 and still just 23-years-old, there shouldn't be any speculation over Haaland's immediate future, but rumours continue to swirl. Reports in Spain continue to link him with a move to La Liga, with both Real Madrid and Barcelona considered options for the Scandinavian colossus, while there has long been an expectation that he will not spend the entirity of his career with the Manchester giants.

With that in mind, City will have to plan for his successor, and appear to be doing just that by identifying a striker who finds the back of the net at an equally incredible rate.

City "trying" to sign Bundesliga youth star

Now, reports have linked them with a player who is scoring even faster than Erling Haaland in the shape of teenage prodigy Dzenan Pejcinovic.

The 19-year-old is yet to make his mark at senior level for Wolfsburg, but found the net 28 times in 18 games in the U19 league last season, scoring roughly every 55 minutes and marking himself as one of the most prolific goalscorers in academy football.

His record at international level reflects that too, averaging a goal per game across four different youth groups for Germany and converting at a shockingly fast rate.

He has caught the eye of Pep Guardiola and co, with reports in Germany revealing that the Cityzens are "trying to secure" his signature this summer as they look to add him to their ranks.

With Haaland already at the club and Julian Alvarez an able deputy, it could be a case where if he is bought, he will be immediately loaned out to one of the City Group sides, which include Girona, Troyes and Palermo.

However, Wolfsburg are not keen to let him leave, with Sports Director Sebastian Schindzielorz explaining: "We are very happy with Dzenan’s development, and our thoughts are on how we want to continue to push this development forward.

"Unfortunately, the injury got in the way. That’s why our main priority is to get Dzenan healthy and able to take on pressure again. We hope that he can start training again during the preparation phase, then we’ll see.”

Though they are keen to keep him, if Guardiola manages to turn his head, they may be powerless to prevent his exit.
