New Zealand eye Bangladesh whitewash to cap off hectic home summer

With the series in the bag, the only dampener for the hosts in the third and final T20I in Auckland could be rain

Mohammad Isam31-Mar-2021Big PictureNew Zealand are about to end their all-win home summer that has stretched seven series. They have hosted 21 international matches, the most by any country since the Covid-19 pandemic. It is regarded as an administrative success, particularly given their country’s stringent quarantine protocols. The only dampener is likely to be the rain in the forecast in Auckland for the season finale, the third T20I against Bangladesh.A major strength for New Zealand has been their newcomers turning in superb contributions even after they have been put under pressure. In the second T20I in Napier, it was Glenn Phillips whose unbeaten half-century got them out of trouble and into a total that proved too much for Bangladesh amid confusion over the DLS-determined target. Daryl Mitchell helped Phillips in an unbroken 62-run sixth-wicket stand that came off just 27 balls. In the first match, it was Devon Conway and debutant Will Young who got them into a position of strength. New Zealand will also be pleased with how Ish Sodhi has continued his good form throughout the summer despite playing only T20Is. During the ongoing T20I series in particular, Tim Southee’s captaincy has also stood out.Come the third and final T20I on Thursday, they wouldn’t mind Martin Guptill getting a big score as he has been in threatening form since the ODI series against Bangladesh with his quick starts. Finn Allen, too, would be eyeing a sizeable score having made just 17 across two innings so far in this series. There’s going to be an opportunity to see who among Adam Milne, Lockie Ferguson and Hamish Bennett get to pair up in Auckland.Related

DLS drama: Confusion over target reigns as Bangladesh begin chase

Bangladesh have had a few positives during this tour but their players have been somewhat inconsistent. Nasum Ahmed bowled well in both T20Is, particularly opening the bowling, although he has only two wickets to show for so far. Soumya Sarkar’s half-century in the second T20I should help him get out of a trough.Mohammad Naim has shown glimpses of his impressive strokeplay in both games, albeit without a big score. Afif Hossain made 45 in a losing cause in the first game, in Hamilton, while Shoriful bounced back with an economical spell in Napier after a disastrous debut in the series opener.Mohammad Saifuddin has been expensive with the ball in both games, Liton Das has scored only 50 runs on this tour while Mohammad Mithun and Mahedi Hasan haven’t converted their promise from the ODI series.Form guide(last five completed matches)

Man Utd and INEOS eyeing loan move to sign £100,000-a-week star after Yoro

Manchester United are now eyeing a loan move for their next transfer target after securing a deal for centre-back Leny Yoro.

Yoro agrees to join Man Utd

The Red Devils and Sir Jim Ratcliffe have already secured their first marquee signing of the summer in forward Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna. When asked why he chose Man Utd, the Netherlands international said:

"I have a lot of trust and a good feeling about this step. It wasn't a difficult decision. I mean, I love Bologna a lot, but Manchester United just gave me a very, very good feeling. I'm confident that what's planned will also happen.

"It's been a rollercoaster, the past few weeks. Some very good experiences and I'm very happy to be here. Obviously, making a transfer to Manchester United is something very positive. I just can't wait to get started and continue what I basically did last season. I'm just hoping to improve every day and do the best I can."

After Zirkzee, United quickly moved on to adding to their centre-back ranks, with Leny Yoro on course to officially complete a move to Old Trafford from Lille.

The 18-year-old was also wanted by Real Madrid, but it is Erik ten Hag and Ratcliffe who are set to secure his services in a €50m+ deal, with the player ready to agree a five-year deal.

With big-money deals for Zirkzee and Yoro, finances could be limited for a third summer signing unless players are sold, which may result in the club looking at a loan move for one target.

Man Utd eyeing loan move for Ugarte

After a centre-forward and a centre-back to replace the already departed Anthony Martial and Raphael Varane, a new midfielder could be next on the to-do list for those at Old Trafford.

One midfielder who has been linked is Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte. The Red Devils initially made contact for the Uruguay international last month and Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg revealed earlier this week that “more talks” have taken place.

Now, as per GiveMeSport, Man Utd could look to sign Ugarte on loan from PSG and include either an option or obligation to make a move permanent next summer, rather than stumping up an immediate fee this year.

Ugarte, on £100,000-a-week in France, appears to be viewed as a potential replacement for Casemiro, and United are keeping their options open in regards to how they could bring the midfielder to Manchester.

The 23-year-old was called a “midfield machine” by Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig last year after his impressive numbers during the 2022/23 campaign. Should United secure a loan deal with an option to buy for Ugarte, then Casemiro could complete a move away, amid rumours of a switch to Saudi Arabia, making this one to watch.

Former teammates turned rivals: Riqui Puig, LA Galaxy could be Lionel Messi and Inter Miami's biggest obstacle to the MLS Cup

Puig, who once played alongside Messi at Barcelona, is now the Argentine's biggest threat as both march toward MLS Cup

In the final game of the 2019-20 La Liga season, Barcelona defeated Alaves 5-0, and in that match, Riqui Puig earned his first La Liga assist for the Catalan giants. He played a simple, yet accurate, pass to the feet of Lionel Messi, who danced past a defender and the goalkeeper to slot home for their second goal of the game.

It was the only time they ever connected for a goal on the pitch, and for Puig, it was just one of 57 total senior appearances he would make for the club. Messi, meanwhile, made 778 across his storied career in Spain.

It was a brief overlap in time, a small moment in each footballer's career. However, it was a moment of impact; and now, four years on, both Puig and Messi craft their trade in MLS. Instead of feeding each other passes in and around the opposition box as teammates, though, they're direct competitors who stand in the way of each other achieving greatness in 2024; lifting MLS Cup.

Messi and Inter Miami are the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, while the Galaxy are the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference, they largely say on the top seed for most of the season, letting it slip from their grasp on Decision Day.

Seeding wouldn't matter much if the two teams were to face off in the MLS Cup though.

The South Beach club lifted the MLS Supporters' Shield in record-breaking fashion , and both Messi and Luis Suarez are 2024 MLS MVP nominees. Barring something unexpected, Miami will host the MLS Cup final. So considering all of that, who will stop them from storming the playoffs and lifting the championship trophy?

Well, the answer – four years on from that shared moment between Puig and Messi – might just be the Galaxy, who began their MLS Cup journey with a 5-0 smashing of the Colorado Rapids in game one of their Best-of-3 series.

GOAL looks into Messi's success in 2024, what makes LA so special this season, and how a potential meeting in MLS Cup could be awaiting the ex-Barcelona teammates.

Puig, now 25, was a La Masia graduate during his youthful days in Spain. He joined the famous academy in 2013, progressing through the various youth teams into the reserves of the first-team. In December 2018, he signed a contract with the Spanish side that would keep him with the club through 2021. However, his La Liga debut would not arrive until April 2019, and his promotion to the senior team would not come until October 2020, when he was handed the No. 12 shirt on the first-team roster.

In January 2021, he scored a famous winning goal in a penalty shootout against Real Sociedad in the semifinals of the Supercopa De Espana, a 3-2 victory in kicks from the spot for and Puig. 11 days later in a La Liga match against Elche, he scored his first senior regulation goal, heading in a cross from Dutch international Frenkie De Jong.

In total, Puig went on to make 42 senior appearances in La Liga for Barcelona, scoring twice and recording two assists across 1,421 minutes of action.

His best performances, however, arrived after Messi departed the club for Paris Saint-Germain in August 2021. During their time in Spain, though, Messi was a part of the Barcelona roster for 40 of his 58-total appearances across all competitions. Their moment together, though, was in that match against Alaves. Puig, full of excitement, sprinted to the Argentine and hugged him after the goal, leaping into the air with the cheekiest of smiles on his face.

In that contest, Puig, then 20, set a Barcelona record becoming the youngest player since Thiago Alcantara in 2011 to record two assists in a match for the with his other assist being an Nelson Semedo goal.

It was an evening where Puig announced his presence on the global stage, and the world suddenly turned their eyes to what many thought was the next superstar to come out of La Masia. However, that never happened. Messi departed as the club fell into financial hardships in 2021, and one year later, Puig was also a victim of those hardships, departing the club on a shocking free transfer to the LA Galaxy and MLS.

Since joining MLS, Puig has become one of MLS' elite attractions, capitalizing on the potential he's shown earlier in La Liga.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesMLS' midfield maestro

Since arriving to Major League Soccer in 2022, Riqui Puig has been one of, if not the, best central midfielders in the league. He's been nothing short of incredible for the Galaxy, crafting creativity in the middle of the park with all of those around him. The ball? Glued to his boot on the run. The pass? Delivered on a string.

Puig, an MLS MVP nominee in 2023 and 2024, has been crucial to the resurgence of the Galaxy, a storied club who have not won a trophy in over a decade. Their last trophy came at the 2014 MLS Cup, with a roster fielding the likes of both Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan.

Things are different now, though. The Galaxy are the best they've been in 10 years, and Puig is spearheading their sensational campaign.

"Always when you come from Barcelona, the expectations are really high," Puig told CBS Sports ahead of their playoff opener against the Rapids. "When I come from Barcelona, I think that people are waiting for something of me that I cannot give to the fans, you know? I think that I'm trying to make goals, make assists and I think this year, it was one of the best seasons of my life and I'm really happy and really proud."

The Spaniard scored 13 goals and recorded 15 assists across 29 matches in 2024, recording 28 goal-contributions during that span. His expected goals (xG) across the campaign was 8.6, and he surpassed that tally, nearly doubling it across the regular season, too.

In his central midfield role, the 25-year-old stood out from the rest of MLS' midfielders.

With 3,240 touches on the ball, he led the rest of the league in that category, with Houston Dynamo's Artur coming in second with 2,768 touches – nearly 400 less than Puig. The same duo topped the league in passes-completed, with Puig having 5,919, however, Artur had nearly 900 less completions than him, with 5,099 completed. Factor in that the Galaxy's Maya Yoshida and Marco Delgado came third and fourth in that category, it comes to no surprise that LA were MLS's top passing team in 2024 with 20,191 passes.

The composer of that midfield, Puig was nothing short of brilliant, and virtually no coach or XI figured out how to stop him during the regular season as a result.

gettyThe king of South Beach

As strong as Puig was, he isn't considered one of the MVP favorites. And that is largely due to the otherworldly performances from Messi this season.

The Argentine, a 2024 MLS MVP finalist, scored 20 goals and recorded 16 assists in just 19 matches this season, only 15 of which were starts. His outstanding attacking numbers helped not only lift the 2024 MLS Supporters' Shield, but also helped them clinch a spot in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, as well.

After his 2021 departure from Barcelona, and his brief stint in Paris in between, he joined Miami in 2023 on a free transfer – one year after Puig's arrival. However, the two did not meet during the 2023 season, rather, their first time clashing on the pitch came in 2024 on LA's Opening Day of the campaign. It was a contest where Puig saw an early penalty attempt saved by Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender, and in dramatic fashion, a late equalizing goal from Messi in the second minute of stoppage-time secured Miami a point in a 1-1 draw between the two sides.

Ahead of the match, Puig warned his squad about his ex-Barcelona teammate, someone he dubbed "the best player in the world" before the contest, but last-gasp heroics from the Argentine denied the Galaxy an early-season victory.

Nine months on, and now, a potential meeting between the two sides may be on the cards again, but only if they can make their way to MLS' championship game. For Messi though, just over one year after his arrival to South Beach, he has been the face of North America's top flight, and an MLS Cup win would be the crown on his head to go with it.

The bounce back

Puig and the Galaxy have had a 2024 remember, rising from 13th in 2023 to being second this year. Their confidence is riding high – and rightfully so. They've defeated every single Western Conference playoff team this season, and in their lone match against Messi and Miami, they earned a point.

And one year ago? Fans of the club couldn't fathom believing that.

It's a complete 180-degree turn from 2023, where they finished 13th in the Western Conference, missing the postseason despite having an MVP-caliber midfielder like Puig run the show. Now, one year on from that disappointing campaign, it's a new team and a new Puig. Factor in their smart offseason transfer business, acquiring the likes of Joseph Paintsil and Gabriel Pec, and things are better than ever.

"I think that this year, we have really good pieces, we [made] good transfers," Puig added while speaking to CBS on Oct. 24 "Also with [Gabriel] Pec and [Joseph] Paintsil, I think that the team improved a lot, and for me, it's more easy because I have runners up top and that's more easy for me. Last year, we had a lot of injuries and I think that this year, the injuries and all the atmosphere we have at Galaxy, it's better and we improve a lot and for sure with Greg [Vanney], I think he's making a really good job and we understand what he wants inside the field and we're really happy because we are playing really good and for sure, we are winning. That is important."

Chelsea star has been telling £200,000-per-week forward to sign for Maresca

A member of Chelsea's squad has been telling one player to make the move to Stamford Bridge and sign for Enzo Maresca this summer.

Chelsea targeting new senior forwards after flurry of early summer deals

Co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart have been spearheading yet another active transfer window for Chelsea so far, with the Blues already spending £105 million in total on Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Omari Kellyman, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Brazilian starlet Estevao Willian.

Luckily, exits for Thiago Silva, Hakim Ziyech, Lewis Hall, Omari Hutchinson and Ian Maatsen have brought in around £84 million in sales, meaning Todd Boehly and co have done fairly well in balancing the books with a net spend of around £21 million.

Chelsea are involved in a high-profile race to sign Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna as well, but Arsenal appear set to have a major say on this potential transfer as the London rivals go toe-to-toe for his signature.

There remains the possibility of Chelsea signing more senior forwards to bolster Maresca's squad as well. 18-year-old striker Guiu, despite arriving from Barcelona with bags of potential, could be seen as one for the future rather than an immediate first team upgrade.

Estevao, meanwhile, isn't actually linking up with the club until 2025. Therefore, it has been reported that Chelsea chiefs are still scouring the market for new attacking options.

Reports in France claim a Chelsea bid has been submitted for Brazilian winger Wesley, while other media sources suggest Chelsea are prepared to bid for Napoli star Victor Osimhen for the striking position.

One name who refuses to go away is that of Spain starlet Nico Williams, coming amid a very impressive Euro 2024 campaign for him personally. The 21-year-old racked up 19 assists in all competitions for Athletic Bilbao as well and already has a connection to Chelsea through international teammate Marc Cucurella.

Cucurella has been telling Williams to sign for Chelsea

Speaking to Spanish newspaper Sport, via TEAMtalk, Cucurella admits that he's been trying to convince Williams to join Chelsea.

“He is a great player, he is bringing out all his potential,” said Cucurella when questioned about Williams.

“It is a source of pride that he is on our team, that he is our teammate and with players like him everything is easier. He would be a great signing [for Barcelona], but it all depends on what he wants. I’ve been telling him to sign for Chelsea. In the end everything depends on him, he is very young, with a lot of experience. I think he will be a great player.”

The forward, who earns a reported £200,000-per-week at Bilbao, could depart for the value of his £49 million release clause.

Rahul Chahar to CSK's Deepak: 'Stay strong, brother, get well soon'

It’s not known what Deepak is suffering from, but he’s part of the CSK camp, where more than 10 members have tested positive

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Aug-2020In a curiously worded Twitter message, Mumbai Indians legspinner Rahul Chahar has wished his cousin Deepak Chahar, of Chennai Super Kings, a “speedy recovery” and said he hoped he would “get well soon”. There has been no official confirmation about what Deepak is suffering from but he is part of the Super Kings camp in Dubai, where more than ten people have tested positive for Covid-19.Rahul Chahar, who is now in Abu Dhabi with his team, said in his Twitter message: “Stay strong brother…all my prayers for you”. The tweet, posted at 8:36 pm local time (10:06 pm in India), came on a day when the Chennai camp had already been dealt a blow with the exit of senior player Suresh Raina for the duration of the tournament.ALSO READ: Raina to miss entire IPL due to personal reasons

Deepak has been central to Super Kings’ attack in the past couple of seasons, often bowling in the powerplay and in the slog overs. Coming off an injury – he last played competitive cricket in December 2019 – Deepak was part of Super Kings’camp in Chennai, along with captain MS Dhoni, Raina, M Vijay, Ambati Rayudu, Piyush Chawla and L Balaji, the bowling coach, before flying out to the UAE.That camp has also come in sharp focus now because it was held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, and its neighbourhood, especially Triplicane, has become a Covid-19 hotspot. There has been no direct correlation established between the camp and the positive tests, though. The IPL is due to start on September 19, but the schedule is yet to be finalised. The setbacks in Super Kings’ camp is likely to put the IPL on alert as they are expected to play defending champions Mumbai Indians in the opener.

4/10 Norwich performer must have played his last game for the club

Norwich City's 2023/24 season ended in dismal fashion on Thursday night as they were humiliated at Elland Road in a 4-0 defeat to Leeds United.

The Canaries had held the Whites to a 0-0 draw at Carrow Road in the first leg and gave themselves a platform to go and attack the match in Yorkshire, but failed to do so.

David Wagner's side knew that they could not let the hosts get off to a fast start, to prevent the crowd from getting behind them early, yet that is exactly what happened.

Leeds dominated the game from the first whistle and found their first goal, through Ilia Gruev, after seven minutes and were 2-0 up inside the opening 20, thanks to a header from Joel Piroe.

Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville then added a third and a fourth either side of half time to book the Whites a place at Wembley and the Canaries a ticket to their summer holidays.

Norwich now have another season in the Championship beckoning and have reportedly decided to sack Wagner, with Carlos Cuesta and Steve Cooper of interest, but the German boss was not the only person from last night's encounter who must surely have no future in Norfolk.

One player who must have played his final game for the Yellows after his poor showing at Elland Road is central defender Ben Gibson.

The 31-year-old defender's lack of mobility was on full display in Yorkshire as he simply struggled to cope with the pace and intensity of the performance from the home side.

Rutter, Wilfried Gnonto, and Summerville's athleticism and pace when running at the Norwich backline was a frightening sight, as Shane Duffy and Gibson looked terrified every time a Leeds player got turned and started running towards them.

In 63 minutes on the pitch, before Kenny McLean was moved back to centre-back in his place, the veteran defender failed to win a single duel on the deck or in the air.

As you can see in the table above, Gibson did very little to stem the flow of Leeds attacks during the match, as he was dribbled past as many times as he made tackles and interceptions.

His failure to win a single duel, as well as the fact the defender only competed in two, summed up the team's performance from a Norwich perspective. The Canaries did not get close enough to the hosts all evening and came out second best all over the pitch with their passive approach.

Gibson did complete 95% (56/59) of his attempted passes but they did not amount to much as the Yellows failed to score and did not offer a consistent threat in possession.

The Pink'Un's Samuel Seaman awarded the former Middlesbrough star a dismal player rating of 4/10 for his display on Wednesday night, which may even seem generous given the score and his lack of impact on the defensive end – as shown in the aforementioned statistics.

It is now time for sporting director Ben Knapper to be ruthless in his approach, unlike Norwich on the pitch this week, and ditch the left-footed enforcer when his contract expires later this summer.

Why Ben Gibson should be released

The experienced defender's current deal at Carrow Road is due to expire at the end of June and the time now feels right for the club to move on from him ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Gibson has racked up 124 appearances for Norwich since his initial loan move from Burnley in 2020, which turned into a permanent one in 2021, and the 4-0 defeat to Leeds must be his last.

The 6 foot 1 colossus started 33 Championship games during the regular season and both of the play-off semi-final clashes with Leeds, which shows that Wagner relied upon him in the heart of his defence.

Norwich ended their campaign with the fifth worst xGA per 90 in the division (1.45), below relegated Huddersfield Town, and this speaks to how vulnerable their backline was with Gibson, along with the likes of Duffy, Jack Stacey, Sam McCallum, and Dimi Giannoulis.

As you can see in the table above, the central defender is currently the highest earner in the squad and his performance in the play-offs and Norwich's defensive record this term suggests that they have not been getting value for money.

At the age of 31, there may not be much, if any, development left for Gibson to go through, which is why Knapper must now look to the future beyond him, and hope to bring through a younger, more athletic, heir.

The player who could replace Ben Gibson

Norwich may already have a replacement for the veteran centre-half already in the building in the form of academy graduate Brad Hills, who just spent the year on loan with Accrington Stanley in League Two.

The 20-year-old, who was born in Norwich, won the fourth tier side's Player of the Season award for his fantastic efforts in the heart of their defence.

Whilst not a naturally left-footed player, Hills could play on the left side of the Canaries backline or he could play on the right, with another signing brought in to offer a left-footed balance when playing out from the back.

As you can see in the table above, the young colossus enjoyed a significantly better season than Gibson, albeit in League Two and it remains to be seen how he would cope with the step up to the second tier.

Hills, as shown in those statistics, has the potential to be an upgrade on the current Norwich centre-back by winning the ball back with greater regularity, whilst also dominating opposition players in physical duels with greater success.

The first step for the Canaries and Knapper, however, is to release Gibson at the end of his contract, making the 4-0 defeat to Leeds his final game for the club.

Pundit urges Levy to make very "affordable" signing after Tottenham news

A pundit has urged chairman Daniel Levy to make an "incredibly affordable" Tottenham signing this summer after recent news from The Telegraph.

Spurs face important summer after positive debut season for Ange

Whether or not Spurs qualify for the Champions League next season, you can deem manager Ange Postecoglou's debut season in the dugout a positive one.

Tottenham eyeing zero cost move for £250,000-per-week ace hailed by Carrick

Spurs have executed a brand of entertaining, attack-minded football to devastating effect at times, and while losses like their 4-0 defeat away to Newcastle indicate there is still plenty to work on, you can argue that this will be part of the growing process.

Postecoglou is certainly under that impression, and he expects more heavy losses akin to their Newcastle trip in future as they continue to work through the kinks.

“Newcastle were good, credit to them”, said Postecoglou after Tottenham's defeat to Newcastle. “We just didn’t really get a grip of the game at all. We never really wrestled control at any stage and we paid the price for that.

“We allowed them to dictate the way the game was played. We weren’t brave on the ball. A lot of it was self-inflicted. It’s the same as every other game. There’s no point sitting around feeling sorry for yourself. We’ve got another game in two weeks’ time.

“It’s not the first time it [a heavy defeat] has happened to us; it won’t be the last. It’s part of our growth. Sometimes that growth is painful. I was concerned with all of it. There was no one area that cost us today. We never got to any sort of tempo."

Part of that growth will be acquiring new faces later this year, when the window reopens, and it is believed that Tottenham are looking at signing a new forward or two. An exciting player to be linked with Spurs is Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, coming after the 21-year-old's three goals and eight assists in 25 La Liga appearances.

Spain'sNicoWilliamscelebrates scoring their sixth goal

The Telegraph back other reports that Tottenham are eyeing a move for Williams this summer, and it is a deal which pundit John Wenham believes should absolutely be done.

Wenham urges Spurs to move for Nico Williams

Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham says Tottenham should sign the "incredibly affordable" Williams given the rumoured £42.8 million release clause in his Bilbao deal.

“His £42.8million buyout clause is incredibly affordable for a team of Tottenham’s financial standing,” Wenham said.

“Williams is a player with immense talent, huge potential and somebody who is starting for Spain and will be looking to go to the Euros this summer. In this current market we’re talking about a £60million-plus player, and he is available for just over £40million, so this deal is a no-brainer for me.”
