Other Premier League sides did more business, but Chelsea still had a busy end to the summer transfer window.

The club finally got their hands on Alejandro Garnacho, opted against signing Fermin Lopez, and made a surprise move to bring in Facundo Buonanotte on a season-long loan – without an option or obligation to buy.

Additionally, the Blues decided to cancel Marc Guiu’s loan to Sunderland following the recent injury to Liam Delap.

However, that’s a decision they might not have needed to make, as they’ve already got an incredibly talented youngster who could’ve filled in.

Chelsea's striker situation

There is plenty of optimism around Chelsea and what they could achieve this season, and rightly so, but things are currently far from ideal in the striker department.

In the win over Fulham on Saturday, Liam Delap started up top, and while he looked lively in the opening exchanges, he had to come off in just the 14th minute with a hamstring injury, which will keep him out of the action for eight to ten weeks.

The sudden setback for the Englishman caused the club to momentarily stop Nicolas Jackson’s loan move to Bayern Munich, only for the Senegalese striker to make it quite clear he wanted to go.

Now, Maresca does still have a fit Joao Pedro to call on, but until Cole Palmer is fit enough to come back into the side, the Brazilian is likely to continue as the team’s ten or second striker.

So, with there being minimal options on the market, the West Londoners decided that the best route to take was to cancel Guiu’s loan to Sunderland.

After all, the young Spaniard did score six goals in 16 appearances for the side last season, and had already bagged one in three games for the Black Cats.

However, while that might serve Maresca in the short term, it could limit the 19-year-old’s long-term development, and it might not have even been necessary, as there is a youngster in the academy who deserves a chance to fill in.

Few, if any, top academies can match Cobham for the sheer number of quality players it produces, and it looks like the next success of the production line could be Shumaira Mheuka.

It’s almost certain that fans outside of Chelsea have little to no idea who the 17-year-old gem is, but fans of the club would have seen him make several first-team appearances last season.

Maresca trusted the Birmingham-born gem to come off the bench four times in the Conference League and even once in the Premier League, at home to Southampton.

He might not have got onto the scoresheet in any of those cameos, but do not get it twisted, the youngster looks to be a lean, mean goalscoring machine.

For example, in 53 appearances for the West Londoners’ youth sides, the young ace, whom one analyst has dubbed one of the “brightest young strikers in England,” has scored 26 goals and provided six assists.

That comes out to a sensational average of a goal involvement every 1.65 games, which is a more than encouraging rate of return.

Now, it would be absurd to expect the youngster to come into the side and make loads of appearances, but he could certainly fulfil the role as a backup and someone who plays in the less important games.

After all, how is he going to take the next step unless he is exposed to more senior football, and with respected talent scout Jacek Kulig dubbing him “the future of Chelsea and English football,” Maresca might want to get him in the squad as soon as possible, in case another team comes along and offers him just that.

Ultimately, while it would have been something of a risk, the Blues should have let Guiu remain out on loan for his own development, and used Mheuka as the backup option – he deserves a shot.

How do you solve a problem like Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount?

Yes, Amorim confirmed the frustrating news on Friday afternoon that both men will be absent for Sunday’s tussle, albeit while having failed to provide an update on just when the pair can be expected to return to action.

In the case of Cunha, the Brazilian was forced off on the hour mark in the most recent 3-2 win over Burnley, appearing to pull his hamstring just days after playing the full 90 minutes in the drab penalty shootout defeat to Grimsby.

The other part of a fluid forward line in the early weeks of the season, excluding fellow new recruit Bryan Mbeumo, had been Mount, with the Englishman notably starting the first three league games of the campaign. For context, he started just eight top-flight games in total last term, and only five the year prior.

Unfortunately for United’s number seven, he too was withdrawn against the Clarets in what looked to be a cautionary move, although the news of his confirmed absence marks yet another setback in his stop-start Old Trafford career. Indeed, it was the Etihad which halted his early progress under Amorim back in December.

Usual ever-present Diogo Dalot has also been ruled out after sustaining a muscular injury during the international break, yet the major concern is likely to be how to reconfigure the forward line in Cunha and Mount’s absence.

How Amorim can replace Cunha and Mount

With Dalot forced to watch on from the sidelines, the expectation would be for Patrick Dorgu to slot in at left wing-back, while a decision will need to be made on either the returning Noussair Mazraoui or the aforementioned Amad on the opposite flank.

The sensible selection might well be to propel the Ivorian speedster back into the forward line, having thus far looked somewhat uncomfortable operating as a right-wing back.

Indeed, both he and Mbeumo have looked to operate in similar areas, a fact showcased none more so than on the opening day against Arsenal, as they got in each other’s way inside the area.

Amorim may be better served utilising Amad as one of the two number tens, with Mbeumo in a false nine role, then leaving the likes of Joshua Zirkzee, Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes as an option to fill the remaining void.

Like a rampaging bull leading the line, the ex-England skipper appeared to relish the big occasion. On the evidence of the last few seasons, so too does Amad.

In almost 25 years as Tottenham Hotspur chairman, to say that Daniel Levy wasn’t known for his deep pockets would be an understatement. Unlike those around them, Spurs were often criticised for putting profit at the centre of their ambitions rather than silverware throughout his tenure.

Meanwhile, when Spurs did spend big, it didn’t always go to plan. They unlocked financial freedom after selling Gareth Bale in 2012, as Real Madrid secured the Welshman for a staggering £85m fee. But what came next was transfer flop after transfer flop. It could even be argued that they only managed to replace Bale eight years later when they signed the man himself on loan from Real Madrid.

The fact is, from Roberto Soldado to Vincent Janssen as well as many in between, Levy rarely spent well in North London. So much so, that we’ve now ranked the worst signings that he made during his time at Tottenham.

10 Clinton N'Jie (£12m)

Whilst Clinton N’Jie is far from the most expensive player on his list, he is one of the most disappointing. The 22-year-old arrived as a player full of potential in 2015, with Mauricio Pochettino at the peak of his powers. He was billed as a player destined for big things and seemed as though Spurs landed the ultimate transfer coup as a result.

In what turned into quite the trend, however, Levy guessed wrong. N’Jie went on to make just 14 appearances for the Lillywhites before leaving for Marseille just two years on from arriving. Failing to score and assisting just one goal in those 14 appearances, it’s fair to say that the winger never lived up to the hype.

9 Yves Bissouma (£30m)

A more recent inclusion, Yves Bissouma, is the topic of much frustration in North London. The talent is quite clearly there. At his best, he is exactly the midfielder that Tottenham hoped to sign for just £30m in 2022. But ability isn’t the issue.

There were many questions about Bissouma’s discipline when Ange Postecoglou suspended the midfielder from club duties last season, forcing the former Brighton man to earn back his redemption and those concerns have only increased under Thomas Frank.

A fresh start provided Bissouma with a clean slate that he has already mudded with disciplinary issues. Frank told reporters after leaving him out of his Super Cup squad to face Paris Saint-Germain: “Bissouma isn’t here because of disciplinary reasons. He has been late several times, the latest one too many.”

8 Bryan Gil (£22m)

There was a brief moment when Bryan Gil was Tottenham’s longest-serving player in the summer and that just about sums up Levy’s transfer struggles in North London. The Spaniard spent four years at the club despite spending much of that time out on loan and never making his mark under several managers.

Like N’Jie years prior, Gil was signed as a player for the future and has since become a transfer flop. That said, at 24 years old, it could be argued that the Spaniard never truly received a fair chance in North London and he could yet thrive at Girona. From a transfer flop at Spurs, it would only compile the Lillywhites’ misery if Gil went on to become the world-beater that they thought they signed four years ago.

7 David Bentley (£15m)

Some went as far as to suggest that David Bentley could be the next David Beckham and that’s all the convincing that Levy needed. He and Spurs swooped in to welcome the Blackburn Rovers star in a deal worth £15m in 2008. At the time, that was no small price, either. Big things, as a result, were expected.

After five years at the club and just 62 appearances, Bentley retired at Tottenham. From Beckham comparisons, the midfielder became one of the most disappointing transfer flops of the Levy era.

6 Davinson Sanchez (£37m)

When thinking about Davinson Sanchez, it’s hard not to remember the time when İlkay Gündoğan left him flailing to score for Manchester City. That in itself summed up his struggles at Tottenham. It wasn’t all bad, of course, but for a £37m player, many expected more.

The central defender thrived at Ajax and showed initial potential in North London, before ultimately failing to replicate the success of Jan Vertonghen or Toby Alderweireld.

Failing to replace star players has been an ongoing trend at Spurs too. They failed to replace Bale many moons ago, failed to replace Vertonghen and Alderweireld, and are yet to really replace the quality of Harry Kane. In a new era without Levy, that must change.

5 Paulinho (£17m)

Paulinho is one of the most memorable Tottenham flops. Mostly because he somehow found his way to Barcelona years later. In North London, things simply didn’t click for the Brazilian, who arrived for as much as £17m in 2013. One of the incomings that Tottenham welcomed with the Bale money, the midfielder was part of arguably the worst transfer window in Levy’s tenure.

In a two-year spell at White Hart Lane, Paulinho made 67 appearances, scored 10 goals and assisted another seven. As impressive as 16 goal involvements may look from midfield, however, those numbers simply papered over the cracks for a player who simply wasn’t good enough in the Premier League.

4 Giovani Lo Celso (£55m)

What was Levy thinking here? Giovanni Lo Celso, to his credit, remains a talented player. Alas, what he is not is a player worth £55m. Once again, those in North London were attempting to finally replace a key player – this time Christian Eriksen – and once again, they failed to do so. In 108 appearances, Lo Celso was involved in just 18 goals.

As Xavi Simons could be about to prove, a player worth around £55m simply must do better. But what makes Levy’s deal to sign Lo Celso so much worse is that he then sold the Argentine back to Real Betis in 2024 for less than £10m.

In the space of five years, the Tottenham chief handed the Spanish club £55m for their best player, watched him struggle, and then handed him back for a bargain price.

3 Vincent Janssen (£15m)

When AZ Alkmaar sold Vincent Janssen to Tottenham in 2016, it was the advice of ‘Moneyball’ baseball expert Bill Beane which saw the Dutchman’s price tag rise to as much as £15m. Unlike Beane’s baseball stars, though, Janssen was not the genius signing that many expected. He was the total opposite.

In 46 appearances, the striker managed just six goals and four assists. He remains one of the worst strikers in Spurs’ Premier League history and his presence only enhances the reputation of Harry Kane, who bailed Levy out after his transfer mistake.

2 Roberto Soldado (£26m)

If Tottenham fans thought Janssen was bad, then it may be best to avoid their verdict on Roberto Soldado. Signed for around £26m, using a large chunk of the Bale money as a result, the forward never quite got going in a Spurs shirt. More than anyone, he summed up Levy’s failure to spend well when handed the chance.

By the time that their big-money striker had departed, he had just 16 goals and 11 assists to his name. From the brilliance of Bale, Spurs endured attacking flop after attacking flop until one of their own stepped in to end the most frustrating trend.

1 Tanguy Ndombele (£54m)

If covering distance wasn’t a much-needed asset for any central midfielder, then Tanguy Ndombele may well have gone down as one of the best players to have signed during Levy’s reign. On a technical level, he was outstanding. He was almost a throwback to Moussa Dembele with just how press resistant he was. Physically, meanwhile, he could hold almost anyone off when he was in the mood.

Alas, that mood rarely appeared and José Mourinho’s criticism was never going to help. Some Spurs fans may persist that under a different manager, Ndombele could have thrived. Mourinho was the man in charge, however, and for all his clear talent, the midfielder remains the biggest flop of the Levy era.

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has put striker Will Osula on red alert for the Premier League after seeing him score twice as the holders booked their place in the Carabao Cup fourth round with a 4-1 win against Bradford.

The 22-year-old Dane scored the Magpies’ second and final goals against the League One leaders at St James’ Park to highlight his development, and with record signing Nick Woltemade still coming to terms with English football and Yoane Wissa injured, he has been told he could get his chance amid a hectic schedule.

Asked how close Osula, on £25,000-a-week, is to starting a league game, Howe said:

Osula, rarely seen this season with just over 200 minutes of game time, arrived at the club from Sheffield United as a raw youngster last summer, and Howe and his coaches have since gone to work with him on the training ground.

Newcastle largely dominated throughout and the game was effectively over when Joelinton and Osula struck after 17 and 19 minutes respectively.

However, thanks to the efforts of City goalkeeper Sam Walker and some sub-standard finishing, they had to wait until the 75th minute for the Brazilian to make it 3-0, and although lifelong Magpies fan Andy Cook reduced the deficit, Osula scored again at the death to wrap up a comfortable win.

Howe said: “It was always going to be a difficult game. Nobody makes anything easy for you. Bradford are top of their league and full of confidence, so we needed an element of patience in our performance. But once we got into our groove, we were good.”

On Cook’s goal, he added: “He’s a proper lad, he’s been a big player for this club for the last three or four years and everyone knows about his support for Newcastle, but he’s also got a massive bond with our club as well, so it was a special night for Cooky just getting on the pitch.

As expected, the former Sporting boss is adamant that he is the man to take the club forward and won’t leave of his own accord, claiming that he will give ‘everything’ to succeed under the pressure of the job.

He stated before his side took on Sunderland: “No, that is a decision of the board. I cannot do that (resign). Sometimes I have that feeling and losing is hard, not to create the momentum. It’s so frustrating when you create the momentum, go to the next game, something happens. That feeling sometimes hurts me a lot. Also the players and especially the staff here.”

Later, he added: “It’s a dream to be here and I want to continue here and I want to fight for this. But the problem is now what makes me suffer is to lose games, not to lose my job. You fear to lose your job when you have to pay the bills and I don’t have that feeling.”

On the pitch, calls for Kobbie Mainoo to be a regular Manchester United starter moving forward are amplifying, and it remains to be seen if other changes are made to build momentum once the international break concludes.

Nevertheless, contingency planning is an important part of football, and the Red Devils could turn to an internal face who is a renowned name at Old Trafford.

Dominic Solanke has struggled on the injury front ever since his arrival at N17, with the striker suffering knee, thigh and ankle issues during the 2024-25 campaign, and he has been unable to put the problems behind him at the beginning of this season.

Solanke is set to be out of action for a prolonged period, with it emerging that Thomas Frank may not be particularly fond of the English striker, who was Ange Postecoglou’s first-choice option at centre-forward last season.

With the 28-year-old on the treatment table, Mathys Tel has led the line for Frank’s side in recent weeks, but Jamie O’Hara has not been impressed, and the former midfielder singled the Frenchman out for criticism after the 2-1 loss against Aston Villa.

As such, Tottenham are now ramping up their pursuit of a new striker, according to a report from Caught Offside, which states they have now opened talks over a deal for FC Porto star Samu Omorodion.

Paratici is a big fan of Omorodion’s versatility, and Spurs have held discussions over the possibility of an initial short-term deal with an option to buy, but the Portuguese club’s huge asking price has proven to be a major issue.

Indeed, the Liga Portugal side are set to hold out for a huge fee for the 21-year-old, with it being revealed they are unwilling to let him leave for below the €100m (£87m) release clause in the youngster’s contract.

Much like Minteh, Elanga thrives when given space to run at full-backs, but his tactical versatility has allowed Howe to use him both wide and centrally.

His developing chemistry with Nick Woltemade gives Newcastle new dimensions going forward.

Chelsea had the chance to build on their impressive win over Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night, but as they have done so many times this season, they faltered.

On paper, a game against Qarabağ looked like an easy three points for Enzo Maresca’s side, but in the end, they had to settle for just one.

The draw leaves them 12th in the Champions League, but the worst thing to come out of the match was another injury to Roméo Lavia.

The Belgian has been extremely unlucky during his time at Chelsea, and unless his luck improves, he could eventually be replaced by one of Cobham’s most promising prospects.

Chelsea signed Lavia from Southampton, and from under Liverpool’s nose, in the summer of 2023.

At the time, it seemed like money well spent, as the youngster was one of the most exciting midfielders in the Premier League the previous season and, as journalist Sam Tighe pointed out, “a shining star despite playing in terrible circumstances most of the time.”

Unfortunately, the youngster suffered a muscle tear and then an ankle injury in September 2023 and couldn’t make his competitive debut for the club until the 27th of December.

However, he wouldn’t kick on from there, as, thanks to a hamstring injury, he wouldn’t make another appearance all season.

Last season was marginally better, but even then, five injuries limited him to just 22 appearances, four of which came at the Club World Cup.

To nobody’s surprise, this year has not been much better, as the 21-year-old missed the first five league games with a muscle strain and came off the pitch on Wednesday night with another muscle injury.

Across the last two and a half years, Lavia has made just 30 appearances for the Blues, coming to a total of 1341 minutes.

It would be hard to describe his time at Chelsea as anything other than a failure at the moment, and if he continues to be unreliable over the coming years, he could see himself replaced by an upcoming Cobham gem.

The up-and-coming ace has demonstrated an ability to play in several different positions, from central midfield to centre-back, but, like the Belgian, is primarily a defensive midfielder.

According to one analyst, the “excellent” prospect has several key strengths which could make him an ideal long-term six for Marseca, such as being an “excellent ball retriever,” having “good passing and vision”, and having a knack for “dictating the tempo of the game.”

As if that wasn’t enough, the youngster is also “physically strong” for someone his age, and with all that in mind, it’s easy to see why he’s been described as being “so complete.”

Finally, on top of doing the business for the Blues’ youth sides, the teenager has also won six caps for England’s U16s, in which he’s scored three goals, primarily from defensive midfield.

Ultimately, it will be a few years yet until Watson is playing for the first team, but if Lavia remains injury-prone at that time, the Belgian could find himself replaced by the youngster.

Ruben Amorim had some strong words for a £120,000-a-week Manchester United star in front of the rest of the squad at their Carrington training ground, it has been revealed.

The Red Devils boss bemoaned United’s inability to kill off Tottenham and insisted they still have “lots of problems” after a dramatic 2-2 Premier League draw.

Matthijs de Ligt struck deep into stoppage time to rescue a point for United, who faced a first loss since a difficult September following Spurs goals from Mathys Tel and Richarlison.

“We have a lot of problems. We are just in the beginning. I know that sometimes the results show to people that we are improving. We are improving but we have a lot to do,” Amorim reflected candidly.

“You can divide the game into the final 10 minutes and also when we have to take out Harry Maguire, then suffer two goals and then losing Ben. To overcome everything and manage to score is a good thing.

“If you look at the rest of the game, I think we were comfortable in the game but we should do better. Be more aggressive, feeling the environment in the stadium that the three points were there, the space was there and I think we felt too comfortable during the game.

“We need to expect that in one play anything can happen and change the mood of the stadium. Today was that. I think we control well the game, but we need to do better because the game was there to take.”

It was the first time United faced Spurs since the Europa League final, and it has now been revealed that Amorim was fuming with one of his players after the defeat in Bilbao.

The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell wrote an in-depth story on Amorim’s first year in charge at Old Trafford.

He revealed that Amorim wasn’t happy with Manuel Ugarte following the 1-0 defeat to Tottenham and let him know in front of his Man Utd teammates during a Carrington meeting.

Amorim felt that Ugarte ‘had let his work rate slide from their time together at Sporting’ adding that the midfielder ‘had gotten comfortable and said he did not recognise him as the same player from their first stint together’.

The Uruguay international, on £120,000-a-week in Manchester, is yet to be fully trusted by Amorim during the 2025/26 season, considering that he’s started just two Premier League games so far.

Playing under 350 minutes in all competitions, Ugarte has been preferred to Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in central midfield, so by the looks of things, he still has plenty of work to do to get back in Amorim’s good books.
