Man City need to axe £230k-p/w problem who Txiki said was "exceptional"

It has been an appalling few weeks for Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side are on an unimaginable run of form, having won just one game in their last ten outings in all competitions. That victory came against Nottingham Forest, a 3-0 win in the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium.

After Wednesday night’s loss to Juventus, Guardiola’s side have slipped to 22nd in the Champions League table, and their eight points place them just one point inside the playoff zone. They are really cutting it fine to qualify for the next round.

The Cityzens have been arguably let down by some of their star men this season.

City’s worst performers in 2024/25

It has certainly been a tough season for the 2022/23 treble winners, who are failing to live up to the expectations surrounding them after dominating English, and European football, for the last few seasons.

Phil Foden is one of the players who is struggling this term. The England international has looked a shadow of his former self, having won the PFA Player of the Year award for last season.

He has played 17 games in all competitions so far this term, scoring three goals and assisting two. His only goal contribution at home was a goal in a 5-0 thrashing of Sparta Prague.

Another player who has not performed well this season is new signing Savinho. The Brazilian joined the Cityzens over the summer for £30.8m from Troyes but has not managed to score his first goal in Blue yet. He has grabbed five assists in 20 games across competitions, but it has been a disappointing start to life in East Manchester.

Kyle Walker has been a key component of City’s success in the last few seasons, but he has had a rapid decline. Although he has played 14 times in all competitions, he has struggled. The Guardian journalist Ben McAleer explained there have been “clear indications of a Walker decline for months”, dating back to Euro 2024.

It has been sad for City fans to see their star players out of form and their new signings struggling to adapt. Someone who could fit in both of those categories is Ilkay Gundogan.

Gundogan’s stats in 2024/25

German midfielder Gundogan returned to Manchester City in the summer after spending a season away from the club at La Liga giants Barcelona. He signed a one-year deal with the option of a second season.

It was certainly an exciting move for the club, with outgoing Director of Football Txiki Begiristain full of praise for the midfielder. He called him an “exceptional” footballer, which is more than fair given what he achieved at the club in his first spell.

During his first stint as a Cityzen, the former Borussia Dortmund midfielder played 304 games, scoring 60 goals and grabbing 38 assists. He played a crucial role in their trophy success, capping it off by winning the treble in 2022/23. That season, the German played 51 games, scoring 11 goals and grabbing eight assists.

However, this season the 34-year-old has been a far cry from that form. The City number 19 has played 21 games in all competitions, scoring twice and grabbing just one assist.

It is perhaps no coincidence that his poor performances have coincided with this lull in form for his team.

Stats from Transfermarkt

Football analyst and City supporter Umir explained earlier in the season that the German can, at times “look fatigued” and also “lacks a bit of sharpness”. It is fair to say the City legend has not left a lasting impression on supporters so far during his second spell

Given he is earning an eye-watering £230k per week at the Etihad Stadium, there is an argument to say that City got this signing wrong.

He has not been anywhere near as good as during his first spell, and for the money they spend on his weekly wage, it is an expensive investment for disappointing performances.

Wolves make enquiry to sign £10m defender in January for new manager

Wolverhampton Wanderers have made an enquiry for a Serie A defender in recent days, according to a report. This comes as the Midlands side are continuing their search for a new manager after they sacked Gary O’Neil over the weekend.

Move over Pereira: Wolves could hire PL legend who's not managed in 3 years

Gary O’Neil has been sacked, and Wolves should replace him with this Premier League legend.

ByConnor Holden Dec 16, 2024 Latest on Wolves’ search for a new manager

The 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town at Molineux on Saturday was the final straw for the Wolves hierarchy, as they sacked O’Neil not long after the game had finished. In a statement from chairman Jeff Shit, it said: “We’re very grateful to Gary for all of his effort, dedication, and hard work during his time at the club, and we wish him and his team the best of luck for the future.”

Since then, Wolves have held talks with Al Shabab manager Vitor Pereira over becoming their new head coach. The Midlands side are keen for a quick appointment, and while they have sounded out other managers, such as David Moyes, Pereira is considered the frontrunner, and the compensation needed to be paid to get him out of Al-Shabab isn’t considered a problem.

Wolves are expected to complete the appointment of Pereira in the next 24-48 hours, and agreement over compensation has been reached between the two clubs. If everything goes to plan, the Portuguese should fly over to England in the middle of the week and take training ahead of his first game in charge, which will come against Leicester City. Pereira’s arrival at Molineux will continue Wolves’ long-standing Portuguese links.

Wolves make enquiry to sign £10m defender in January

According to ASRomaLive.it, relayed by Sport Witness, Wolves have made an enquiry to sign Ben Godfrey from Atalanta. The 26-year-old has been playing in Italy since the summer, as he joined the Europa League champions from Everton in a deal worth £10 million.

Godfrey, who was dubbed “outstanding” by Rio Ferdinand during his time in Toffee blue, was a key player during his time at Goodison Park, but Sean Dyche decided to let the defender leave in the summer as his importance waned under the former Burnley boss.

The move to Atalanta hasn’t quite gone to plan for Godfrey, as he’s only played four games so far, none of which have come as a starter. Now this report states that Wolves are among the Premier League teams chasing his signature in January.

Atalanta are willing to let the defender leave in the New Year as manager Gian Piero Gasperini has already given the “green light” for his exit. Godfrey is keen on leaving the Italian side, and he could prioritise a move back to the Premier League. Wolves have made a “concrete” enquiry to sign the versatile defender, but they face competition from Nottingham Forest and Leicester City, with all three expected to engage in talks with his representatives soon if they haven’t already.

Celtic sold star who was "important", now he’s outscoring Engels & Hatate

Celtic splashed the cash in the summer transfer window earlier this year to bolster Brendan Rodgers’ squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Midfielder Matt O’Riley was sold to Brighton & Hove Albion and the Hoops reacted to that by swooping for the likes of Arne Engels, Luke McCowan, and Paulo Bernardo – who re-joined permanently after his loan spell last term.

The Bhoys only paid a reported fee of £1m to Dundee to sign McCowan, but smashed their club record transfer fee to sign Engels from Augsburg for £11m.

With less than half a season played since those summer signings have played, Rodgers may be pleased with the output from his midfielders this term.

Celtic's midfield goalscorers

Captain Callum McGregor currently leads the way for midfielders with six goals in all competitions for the Scottish giants so far this season, smashing his tally of two from the 2023/24 campaign.

Engels, who was brought in for a club-record fee, is still adapting to life in Glasgow and has only managed four goals in 20 appearances for the Hoops to date, three of which came from the penalty spot.

As you can see in the table above, Japan international Reo Hatate has outscored all three of the new signings in midfield, with five goals in 24 matches.

Every midfielder in the squad has, however, scored at least three goals in all competitions and this shows that Rodgers is getting plenty of offensive production from that area of the park.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

There is a former Celtic central midfielder, though, who has outscored Hatate, Engels, McCowan, and Bernardo for his new club this season – Tomoki Iwata.

Tomoki Iwata's form since leaving Celtic

The Hoops made the ruthless decision to cash in on the Japanese ace after he scored one goal in 24 appearances for the club in all competitions last season, despite Rodgers describing him as an “important” player who was “really good” when called upon to provide cover.

Despite his apparent importance to the side to cover for the likes of McGregor and Hatate, the Northern Irishman allowed him to move on after the arrivals of McCowan, Bernardo, and Engels.

Celtic midfielder Tomoki Iwata.

English side Birmingham City swooped in to sign the 27-year-old star to bolster their options in the middle of the park, and it has turned out to be an exceptional piece of business for the third tier outfit.

Iwata, who only scored one goal in 42 matches for Celtic in his career in Glasgow, has already scored six goals in 16 games for Birmingham from a central midfield position.

Four of his five strikes in League One have been from outside the box and, as you can see in the clip above, that has been down to his ability to react to situations around the edge of the box to then take aim from distance.

The former Celtic star has also completed 86% of his attempted passes and won 57% of his duels across 13 appearances in the league for Birmingham, which shows that he has been reliable with the ball at his feet and in physical duels.

Iwata has thrived since moving on from Parkhead, outscoring Engels and Hatate, among others, but it appears as though it has worked out for all parties involved, as Celtic have got goals from a number of different midfielders, and the Japanese ace is now enjoying his time in England.

PIF now in pole position to sign £16m+ player for Newcastle in January

Newcastle United are believed to be leading the race to sign an exciting young talent in the January transfer window, in a deal that could be worth at least £16m.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies continue to be linked with new signings and Paris Saint-Germain striker Randal Kolo Muani has been mentioned as a possible addition at St James’ Park. The France international appears to be deemed surplus to requirements at the Ligue 1 side, with a loan move in January mooted.

It looks as though Newcastle see the need to bolster their attacking options, especially the right wing, which is why Brahim Diaz has been backed to join the club. The 25-year-old is struggling to be a regular starter for Real Madrid this season, being kept out by some stellar names including Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr, so a move away could appeal.

Another leading wide option is Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, who has stood out as one of the Premier League’s best right-sided players so far this season. The fact that he already knows English football so well means he could come straight in and be a star for the Magpies.

Then there are the links with Marc Guehi that have returned, with the Crystal Palace centre-back a massive summer target and now seen as a strong option in the winter window. It feels like a transfer that could happen at some point, and it would arguably be a surprise if it didn’t.

Newcastle in pole position to sign £16m talent

According to a new report from Caught Offside, Newcastle and the PIF are in pole position to sign Hertha Berlin teenager Ibrahim Maza in January, having been interested in him for some time. Southampton, Nottingham Forest, Leicester City, West Ham and Brentford are all mentioned as suitors, too.

The Magpies are said to have ‘positioned themselves to take advantage of one particular opportunity in the marketplace that has presented itself’. The 18-year-old is now potentially available for £16.6m after his asking price was lowered. Offers of £10.8m could ‘get the ball rolling’, though.

Maza may not be the polished attacking player that many Newcastle fans crave in January, but he is a young footballer with an enormous amount of potential, already making an impact at a high level.

He has six goals and four assists in 29 appearances for Hertha, netting once in two appearances in the Bundesliga, and he also already has one cap to his name for Algeria at international level.

Primarily an attacking midfielder, Maza is also capable of shining in a central attacking role or on the left wing, and this level of versatility is something that could appeal to Eddie Howe.

The Algerian ace would be considered one for the future, but also a good squad option to bring in midway through the season, and the fact that he could be available on the cheap is an added bonus.

BCCI plans to start women's IPL by 2023; Women's T20 Challenge returns this season

The BCCI is planning to start the women’s IPL by 2023, board president Sourav Ganguly said on Friday, while the Women’s T20 Challenge, comprising four games, makes a return this season after a one-year gap.The board is planning to have five or six teams in the inaugural edition. All the existing ten men’s IPL franchises will be given the first right of refusal to buy the women’s IPL teams. It is learnt that at least four men’s IPL franchises are interested in knowing from the BCCI what is on the table in case they want to invest in the WIPL.”It [the full-fledged women’s IPL] has to be approved by the AGM. We plan to start it by next year hopefully,” Ganguly told reporters after the IPL governing council meeting in Mumbai on Friday.IPL chairman Brijesh Patel made it clear that this season there would be “four matches involving three women teams around the time of the men’s IPL playoffs”. Pune will be the most likely venue for the women’s games.According to Patel, there would be five or six teams in the Women’s IPL but again that would need the approval of the general body.*India Women’s opener Shafali Verma, currently in New Zealand for the World Cup, said on the eve of their last league game: “Of course, it’s being said that there will be a six-team women’s IPL next year, which is a very good thing. All our women players, including the domestic cricketers, will get to learn a lot, which is a very good thing. My favourite IPL team is Mumbai Indians. I love watching them play and get to learn a lot from them.”South Africa’s Chloe Tryon further gave the examples of the Women’s BBL and the Hundred to say how they needed more such leagues to show their skill.”It’s fantastic for women’s cricket,” Tryon said on Saturday. “If you’ve looked at how successful the Big Bash has been and the Hundred just coming back into it, we want things like this to happen. We want leagues from around the world. We want to showcase our skill and it’s fantastic to see that there’s six teams now, so I think a lot of people, and not just me, are really eager to want to play there.”We know how it is to play in India. We know how the crowds are. It’s really good. So I’m really excited to see how that goes. I’ll hopefully want to play; we’ll see see how that goes. But it’s really exciting for women’s cricket. And as you can see this World Cup, it’s bringing a lot of attention and I’m just thankful that they (BCCI) are looking at it and putting women’s cricket on the platform. So it’s really exciting.”With the second half of the IPL being shifted to the UAE because of the pandemic, the Women’s T20 Challenge was not held last year. However, it was staged in the UAE in 2020 when Trailblazers won the title. The men’s IPL starts on Saturday with defending champions Chennai Super Kings up against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium.*0645 GMT: The story was updated after Shafali Verma and Chloe Tyyon spoke in Christchurch.

Bengaluru pitch gets 'below average' rating from ICC match referee

Javagal Srinath says the surface didn’t offer an even contest between bat and ball

Twenty-six of the 39 wickets in the Bengaluru Test fell to spin•BCCI

The pitch for the second India-Sri Lanka Test in Bengaluru, which finished inside three days, has been rated as “below average” by ICC match referee Javagal Srinath. An office bearer of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) in the past, Srinath felt “the pitch offered a lot of turn on the first day itself and though it improved with every session, in my view, it was not an even contest between bat and ball,” as per an ICC media release.Twenty-six of the 39 wickets in the Test fell to spin. The first day accounted for 16 wickets, while days two and three produced 14 and nine, respectively.Related

Rawalpindi pitch gets 'below average' rating

Shreyas Iyer, who was named Man of the Match for his twin half-centuries, felt the pitch was “not that great” during a press conference after his counterattacking 92 gave India a strong first-innings total.”You saw the players who defended the ball, there was a lot of chance of nicking, and there was variable bounce on that wicket,” Iyer said after the opening day.”You can’t just play very negatively on that wicket and just keep defending the ball. You’ve got to have that positive intent when you step out on the field. The wicket is not that great. It’s obviously bowler-friendly.”Srinath, the former India fast bowler, has submitted a report that has been forwarded to the BCCI. The venue, meanwhile, has received one demerit point under the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring process.Demerit points remain active for a rolling five-year period. If a venue accumulates five demerit points, it will be suspended from hosting international cricket for a 12-month period.Bengaluru became the second venue in two weeks to receive a “below average” rating. Rawalpindi, which kickstarted Australia’s first tour to Pakistan in 24 years, also received a similar rating from match referee Ranjan Madugalle after the Test produced 1187 runs for the loss of just 14 wickets over five days. While the Chinnaswamy surface offered variable bounce from day one, the Rawalpindi track “hardly changed over the course of five days” and that there had been “no deterioration apart from the bounce getting slightly lower.”For the record, India claimed the series 2-0, with Dimuth Karunaratne’s fighting century in the fourth innings merely delaying the inevitable. The Test marked the first time Jasprit Bumrah picked up a five-for in a home Test.

West Ham starlet who snubbed Barca & Madrid is now playing in Cyprus

This summer, West Ham United allegedly became the winners of the transfer window when they spent a whopping £120.2m on eight permanent signings and two loan deals. The Hammers also made eight permanent sales, including Flynn Downes, who joined Southampton for a fee of around £18m.

Their most expensive signing of the summer was bringing Max Kilman from Wolves to work alongside his ex-manager, Julen Lopetegui. Kilman has already made 14 appearances for the Hammers this season, providing one assist, contributing to four clean sheets, and totalling 1,260 minutes played.

Niclas Füllkrug does, however, look like it could turn out to be a costly mistake, only making four appearances for the club since joining, managing 137 minutes played, and is yet to register a goal or assist.

The last window before 2024/25 that wasn’t overseen by David Moyes was all the way back in 2018/1, and that also seems to have had some expensive mistakes in there.

West Ham's 2018/19 transfer window

In the 2018/19 season, West Ham spent around £84m signing ten new players on permanent deals. Their most expensive signing of that window was Felipe Anderson, who joined from Lazio for a fee of around £36m.

The Brazilian made 73 appearances for the Hammers, scoring 12 goals, providing 13 assists, and totalling 5,847 minutes. He then returned to Lazio just three years after leaving for a fee of around £2.6m.

Andriy Yarmolenko turned out to be a good value deal, as he went on to make 86 appearances for the club, netting 13 goals and providing six assists but the Ukraine international left the club at the end of his contract in 2022, now playing for Dynamo Kyiv in his home country.

The only player still at the club signed in the 2018/19 season is Lukasz Fabianski, who has made 206 appearances for the club, conceded 272 goals and kept 54 clean sheets. The Polish shot-stopper has made seven appearances so far this term, keeping three clean sheets and only shopping ten goals.

Felipe Anderson celebrates scoring for West Ham United.

West Ham also sold a U21 player during this window, who was compared to a Ballon d’Or winner, joining Watford for around £1m.

What happened to Domingos Quina's career

Domingos Quina was on the verge of breaking into the West Ham first team back in 2017, regarded as one of the hottest prospects in English football, and being compared to Ballon d’Or winner, Luka Modric, by the West Ham coaches.

Quina made 32 appearances for the West Ham U21 side, scoring three goals, providing two assists, and totaling 2,646 minutes played. However, he only managed six appearances for the first team, totaling just 115 minutes on the field.

The Portuguese midfielder went on to play 37 times for Watford, scoring three goals and providing one assist at the club, but now finds himself playing in Cyprus at just 25 years old, after not having the same career path many expected him to have.

It’s a remarkable turn of events for a player who snubbed the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona when his brother persuaded him to put pen to paper with the Hornets instead.

Quina now currently plays for Pafos FC, and has made 11 appearances so far this season. His side are currently top of the Cypriot First Division, but many will wonder how the Hammers starlet went from one of the most highly regarded youngsters in England to playing in a league below where his potential once lay.
