Leah Williamson just got schooled by Mayra Ramirez! Winners & losers as Chelsea forward proves she's a WSL megastar to leave Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall on the brink

The Gunners showed fight in the second half but it wasn't enough as their manager suffered another damaging defeat, with Ramirez the primary tormentor

Was that Jonas Eidevall's final game in charge of Arsenal? The Gunners suffered a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday which leaves them with just five points from their first four Women's Super League fixtures. It's a division which has only twice been won by teams that have dropped more than 10 points across an entire campaign. After draws with Manchester City and Everton, and now this loss, the Gunners' total already sits at seven. Their title hopes have already taken an almighty hit.

It was an even more damaging result because of the 5-2 thrashing Arsenal suffered at the hands of Bayern Munich on Wednesday night. There are still five Champions League group-stage games remaining for Eidevall's side to sort things out in Europe and progress to the last 16, but the defending was truly atrocious and only continued into the weekend. There were just four minutes on the clock on Saturday when Arsenal conceded from yet another set piece, while the lack of communication, organisation and marking for Chelsea's second further highlighted the problems at the back.

However, though at 2-0 it felt like the Gunners were on their way to another thrashing and Eidevall's future would be seriously in doubt come full-time, the response from the players was positive. Caitlin Foord's goal just before half-time was important and the valiant second-half display saw the hosts show real fight, only denied a point by the crossbar in the end. That spirited fight back may not have earned them a result, but it may have bought Eidevall some time.

In the opposing dugout, Sonia Bompastor won't have been happy with the game management from her players. There will have surely been a feeling of relief when the full-time whistle went, as Chelsea were really on the ropes in those latter stages. But a win is a win – and that is all Bompastor has known since she joined the club, replacing iconic coach Emma Hayes in the summer. Five games into her time with the Blues, she has five victories to show for it, with this the biggest one yet as the WSL champions pursue a sixth successive league title.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from the Emirates Stadium…

Getty Images SportLOSER: Jonas Eidevall

Arsenal haven't won the league for five years and after this start to the new season, it seems likely that the wait to be crowned champions of England again will only continue. The question is, will the club opt to make a change in the dugout in their bid to return to the very top of the domestic game?

Eidevall joined the Gunners in 2021 and things started well, with a strong title challenge. However, the past two seasons have seen Arsenal fall away before the race at the top has really heated up, only able to finish third on both occasions. The pressure has been somewhat eased by two League Cup triumphs, though added to by elimination in Champions League qualifying last year.

All associated with Arsenal want to win the league, something Eidevall himself said was the aim before the season began. But the same issues are costing them from achieving as much. So, has the valiant fightback on Saturday earned him more time to fix these problems? Or will this result be the straw that breaks the camel's back? We'll soon find out.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWINNER: Kadeisha Buchanan

When Kadeisha Buchanan arrived at Chelsea, she did so as one of the best defenders in the world. Her performances at Lyon helped her rack up five Champions League titles, while her form on the international stage was crucial as Canada won Olympic gold in 2021.

She's not really hit those heights in her two years in England so far, something Hayes said last season that Buchanan herself was aware of. So far this season, though, we are seeing her top level again.

The centre-back was great in the 1-0 win over Aston Villa on the opening day – and outstanding at the Emirates. She was like a magnet for the ball, always in the right place to make a crucial block, tackle or clearance. If she can continue in this manner, Buchanan could be a huge player for Chelsea this year.

Getty Images SportLOSER: Leah Williamson

It's not been an easy start to the season for Leah Williamson, who has only recently come back from a concussion. Perhaps that absence contributed to an uncharacteristically bad display on Saturday. The Lionesses captain was up against a dominant Mayra Ramirez and the sheer quality of the Chelsea striker certainly played a part, as she can make even the very best defenders look poor. However, Williamson looked totally out of sorts in a myriad of ways in a calamity of a defensive display from the Gunners in the first half.

There was a moment in that opening 45 minutes when Williamson was chasing Ramirez down the right wing and she appealed that the ball had gone out of play for an Arsenal throw. It looked clearly in to everyone else – including the officials – but the defender slowed her chase of her opponent to question that decision. It was a surprising sight to see such a top defender ignoring the number one rule for any footballer, to play to the whistle, but a moment that also showed how out of character this performance was from Williamson.

For Arsenal to improve on defending that has been awful lately, they need her on top form. In that sense, they'll hope this was a one-off.

Getty Images SportWINNER: Mayra Ramirez

Is there a more complete centre forward in the women's game than Ramirez? She's strong, able to bounce off defenders with ease, just as she did with Fox before scoring Chelsea's opener. She's deceptively quick, able to power away from opponents in a flash to either get in behind or get her team on the attack. She's incredibly skillful, as the improvised nature of her goal showed. She's also very intelligent in her movement off the ball, which allowed her to have so many good moments on Saturday.

Ramirez has real competition for her place in this Chelsea team. Aggie Beever-Jones has been in fantastic form and is earning opportunities as a result, while Sam Kerr and Mia Fishel will be back in the New Year. But if the Colombian continues to perform like this, Bompastor would struggle to bench her.

'It's been a difficult preparation' – Melbourne Renegades coach on Covid challenges ahead of WBBL

Lachlan Stevens is keeping an open mind going into the tournament but knows the squad has an “ace in the pack”

Melbourne teams in the WBBL, the Renegades and Stars, will venture a little into the unknown this weekend when they begin their tournaments having done the majority of their preparation amid strict Covid-19 lockdown in Victoria.Although Victoria-based players, who were not part of the Australia squad for the recent series against New Zealand, have been able to train during Melbourne’s stage 4 restrictions it has been a far from ideal lead-in for the competition that will be staged in a Sydney-based hub over the next five weeks. There have been some protocols other teams have needed to follow, specifically those in Sydney, but far less restrictive than Melbourne over the last three months while the Perth Scorchers, Adelaide Strikers, Hobart Hurricanes and the defending champions Brisbane Heat have largely been able to train as normal in their home states. The teams have all been in Sydney this week so have been able to train at full tilt ahead of starting the competition on Sunday, but Renegades head coach Lachlan Stevens knows it has been a tough build-up.”It’s a really difficult question to answer,” he told ESPNcricinfo about how ready the Victoria-based players would be. “First and foremost we are very grateful to everyone who has gone out of their way and helped us come into the tournament, helped us train before the tournament even though it was with restrictions and a lot of protocols because of what was going on down in Melbourne.”We are all really lucky to be here, both the girls in the Stars and the Renegades teams. It’s certainly been a challenge and I’ve certainly felt for them in that regard so I’m really hoping once they get out there, and I know they will, they compete as hard as they can but it’s been a difficult preparation.”While Stevens expected the will to win to be as strong as usual, he conceded that the pandemic and the challenges of the last seven months brings a different outlook”It’s not that we are not here to try and compete and everyone will be doing their best to win matches,” he said, “but certainly I think you’d be a pretty harsh judge if you walked away from a tournament where everyone was safe and happy expecting any more than that. We want to provide an environment where they can do the very best they can and then whatever comes of that. Priorities have changed a little bit as they have for everyone in the last 12 months.”There will be challenges on the field for the Renegades from the outset with New Zealand pace bowler Lea Tahuhu not set to feature for at least the first half of the competition due to the side injury she picked up against Australia and is doubtful for the whole tournament. Stevens hopes to cover her absence from within the squad rather than dipping into the replacement-player pool that is available. They will also have to contend with missing last season’s leading run-scorer Jess Duffin following her pregnancy, but do have the return of Amy Satterthwaite as captain plus a potent spin attack of Georgia Wareham, Sophie Molineux and Molly Strano.”With Lea and Jess being out they [the spinners] are our ace in the pack,” Stevens said. “If we can get them enough runs on the board to be able to do what they do well, and likewise if we are bowling first hopefully they can take some wickets for us and be restrictive, then it gives us an opportunity in the game. They are certainly holding a large key for how we go about our work over the next few weeks.”Wareham and Molineux were both outstanding in the recent internationals against New Zealand in Brisbane and Strano is the leading wicket-taker in WBBL history with 96 in 72 matches at 17.10. She was a late addition to the T20 World Cup squad after injury to Tayla Vlaeminck, but given the strength of Australia’s resources can’t command a regular place.”She’s just one of the most wonderful team people in the history of cricket,” Stevens said. “She brings energy, enthusiasm and competes as hard as she possibly can every time. And with a smile on her face. I love watching her play.”What she does well is understand where batters’ strengths lie and how she can control them. She reads the play and batters very well and that goes a long way towards her record.”

Colin de Grandhomme has been ruled out of the Test series against West Indies due to bone bruising to his right foot and left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel will miss the opening match as he continues to recover from a calf injury.Allrounder Daryl Mitchell, who made his Test debut against England last year, has been called up as de Grandhomme’s replacement while Mitchell Santner will cover for Patel.Santner has also been named captain for the third T20I against West Indies when Tim Southee, who was standing in for Kane Williamson, will depart the squad to link up with the Test team in Hamilton. Santner and Mitchell will join the Test squad on December 1, two days ahead of the start of the opening match.”The unavailability of Colin and Ajaz has obviously had a flow on effect to our T20 squad who are providing the replacement players for the Test squad,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said. “I highlighted last week how tight and complex the schedule was – so when you throw in some injuries, it really begins to challenge how you juggle your resources.”Mitch and Daryl will be available for the final T20 game, before linking up with the Test squad on Tuesday where we will monitor them closely to ensure they’re fit and fresh ahead of the first Test on Thursday.”I’d like to acknowledge Mitch Santner for taking on the responsibility to captain the T20 side. It’s a great honour to lead your country and I know his calm demeanour along with the sheer amount of international experience he’s amassed in the past five years will hold him in good stead.”It’s disappointing for Colin to be ruled out of the Tests completely and he’ll now target being fit and available for the Boxing Day Test at Bay Oval. Ajaz will join the team in Hamilton to have treatment and train. We will make a call on the second Test in Wellington closer to the time.”Meanwhile, all the New Zealand and West Indies players who arrived from the IPL have cleared their third and final Covid-19 tests meaning they are on track to leave managed isolation on Thursday, the day before the opening T20I at Eden Park.

Approach imminent: Everton want to sign "special" £20k-a-week winger

Everton are believed to be readying an approach for a "special" player in the summer transfer window, according to a fresh update.

Everton transfer news

The Blues continue to be linked with new signings ahead of next season, with Newcastle United youngster Yankuba Minteh a player who was being looked at, though he now seems set to join Lyon.

Iliman Ndiaye is a target who has been lined up as a replacement for the possible loss of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with the Marseille ace described as a "ridiculously talented" footballer who could add quality and unpredictability in the final third.

Iliman Ndiaye for Marseille.

Meanwhile, Wilfred Ndidi stood out as one of the leading midfielders in the Championship last season, playing an important role in Leicester City returning to the Premier League, and he is being looked at as an upgrade on the ageing Idrissa Gueye in the middle of the park at Goodison Park.

Midfield additions could also be important for Everton before the 2024/25 campaign gets underway, and Roma midfielder Edoardo Bove is also reportedly wanted by the Blues, being seen as a player who could link effectively with Jack Harrison.

Everton want "special" Championship winger

According to Football Insider, Everton are "readying an approach" for Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto this summer, with the Blues "turning their attention to a new move" for the Italian.

The Merseysiders came close to snapping up the £20,000-a-week attacker last summer and "have continued to closely monitor his progress at Leeds". It is also believed that he is "keen to move on after failing to secure promotion back to the Premier League with the Whites".

Gnonto could be just what Everton and Sean Dyche are looking for in terms of attacking reinforcements in the summer window, standing out as a young player with a huge amount of potential.

Admittedly, the youngster was outperformed by Crysencio Summerville for Leeds last season, but that's not to say that he didn't impress for the Whites, too, scoring eight goals in the Championship, which is more than any Blues player managed in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, former coach Michael Skubala has lauded him in the past, saying: "He’s a great lad, he’s a special player. He’s a credit to Leeds, he’s a credit to himself and he’s a really nice player to work with."

At just 20, Gnonto is still raw in aspects of his game, but his all-round end product should only improve with age, and Everton could end up enjoying the best years of his career.

Imagine him & Minteh: Everton one of the favourites to sign £20m star

The Toffees are at the front of the pack for this Premier League star.

ByAngus Sinclair Jun 24, 2024

To be a 13-cap Italy international this quickly says a lot about his ability and long-term ceiling, and if the Blues can beat others to his signature this summer, it could end up being a wonderful piece of business as the years pass.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

U.S. Christian Pulisic's strong run of form continued as the American delivered his third Serie A assist of the season to put AC Milan ahead of Udinese 1-0.

His assist came in the 13th minute of Milan's clash with Udinese at the San Siro. Charging forward from outside of the box, Pulisic received a pass and then laid the ball of to Samuel Chukwueze, who picked out the corner with his shot. That moment would ultimately seal all three-points for Milan in the contest.

The assist comes days after Pulisic returned from international duty early after his first U.S. men's national team appearance under new coach Mauricio Pochettino. Pulisic started and assisted Yunus Musah in the 2-0 win over Panama, but was sent back to Milan to rest ahead of the eventual 2-0 loss to Mexico in Guadalajara.

Musah, meanwhile, also made his mark on the match, coming in to play the second half to help Milan survive being down a man.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pulisic is in the form of his life, with both Milan and the USMNT benefitting from his recent surge. The American now has a goal contribution in seven straight Serie A matches for Milan, and that doesn't include his fantastic finish against Liverpool in the Champions League. Pulisic also has assists in his last two USMNT matches as he's ensured his incredible form has stretched across both sides of the Atlantic.

After a difficult spell at Chelsea, Pulisic scored 12 Serie A goals last season, his first for Milan, while also chipping in eight assists. He looks set to surpass those numbers this season as Pulisic looks to establish himself among the elite wingers in Serie A. Pulisic has six goals and three assists overall this season for Milan.

Following Saturday's clash with Udinese, Milan will turn their focus back towards the Champions League as they'll host Belgium's Club Brugge on Tuesday.

Chelsea star has been telling £200,000-per-week forward to sign for Maresca

A member of Chelsea's squad has been telling one player to make the move to Stamford Bridge and sign for Enzo Maresca this summer.

Chelsea targeting new senior forwards after flurry of early summer deals

Co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart have been spearheading yet another active transfer window for Chelsea so far, with the Blues already spending £105 million in total on Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Omari Kellyman, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Brazilian starlet Estevao Willian.

Luckily, exits for Thiago Silva, Hakim Ziyech, Lewis Hall, Omari Hutchinson and Ian Maatsen have brought in around £84 million in sales, meaning Todd Boehly and co have done fairly well in balancing the books with a net spend of around £21 million.

Chelsea are involved in a high-profile race to sign Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna as well, but Arsenal appear set to have a major say on this potential transfer as the London rivals go toe-to-toe for his signature.

There remains the possibility of Chelsea signing more senior forwards to bolster Maresca's squad as well. 18-year-old striker Guiu, despite arriving from Barcelona with bags of potential, could be seen as one for the future rather than an immediate first team upgrade.

Estevao, meanwhile, isn't actually linking up with the club until 2025. Therefore, it has been reported that Chelsea chiefs are still scouring the market for new attacking options.

Reports in France claim a Chelsea bid has been submitted for Brazilian winger Wesley, while other media sources suggest Chelsea are prepared to bid for Napoli star Victor Osimhen for the striking position.

One name who refuses to go away is that of Spain starlet Nico Williams, coming amid a very impressive Euro 2024 campaign for him personally. The 21-year-old racked up 19 assists in all competitions for Athletic Bilbao as well and already has a connection to Chelsea through international teammate Marc Cucurella.

Cucurella has been telling Williams to sign for Chelsea

Speaking to Spanish newspaper Sport, via TEAMtalk, Cucurella admits that he's been trying to convince Williams to join Chelsea.

“He is a great player, he is bringing out all his potential,” said Cucurella when questioned about Williams.

“It is a source of pride that he is on our team, that he is our teammate and with players like him everything is easier. He would be a great signing [for Barcelona], but it all depends on what he wants. I’ve been telling him to sign for Chelsea. In the end everything depends on him, he is very young, with a lot of experience. I think he will be a great player.”

The forward, who earns a reported £200,000-per-week at Bilbao, could depart for the value of his £49 million release clause.
