Burnley and Pace eyeing move for 4-3-3 manager who played alongside Kompany

Burnley and Alan Pace are reportedly eyeing up a move for a big-name new manager who actually played alongside Vincent Kompany.

Vincent Kompany to join Bayern Munich

The Clarets suffered relegation last season in their first year back in the Premier League, however, Kompany won’t be the man in charge at Turf Moor looking to take the club back to the top flight.

The Belgian is set to join Bayern Munich with an announcement planned on Wednesday, leaving Burnley on the search to find a suitable replacement ahead of the Championship season.

Already, there have been names mooted in the media, such as former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper, who has turned down the chance to pursue a move to Lancashire. Meanwhile, Kompany’s assistant at Burnley, Craig Bellamy, is very keen on the idea of stepping up into a senior managerial role, with chief executive Paul Fletcher wanting to appoint the Welshman who is set to remain at the club.

That’s according to Football Insider, who say that Burnley chiefs are at odds over who to bring in, with Pace's personal preference a big-name boss who brings eyes to the club in the same way Kompany did.

Burnley eyeing move for Lampard to replace Kompany

FI state that a big-name manager who could fit the bill for Pace is Frank Lampard. The Clarets appear to be eyeing a move for the former Chelsea and Everton manager, who began his career as a manager in the Championship with Derby County.

The 45-year-old, who plays an attacking 4-3-3 system, led the Rams to the Championship playoff final in 2019, losing to Aston Villa at Wembley before departing for Chelsea.

Lampard also played alongside Kompany at Manchester City in the final years of his career, with Kompany hailing the Englishman during his time as a manager at Stamford Bridge.

"He is the man [for Chelsea], not only a great guy but someone who I learned so much from at a stage in my career. He was a bit older when he joined Man City and Frank was an incredible professional. What he brought at the time, he stepped the level up for everyone else.

"I know the impact of Frank Lampard on a team and I'm trying to have the same impact when I come as an older player for Anderlecht. He's up there with the most intelligent players so it's a natural match with Chelsea, I completely support him."

A move could therefore be one to watch, and you’d expect that Fletcher and Pace will want to bring in Kompany’s successor relatively quickly, giving the club plenty of time to prepare as they aim for an immediate return to the Premier League.

Postecoglou's Tottenham Hotspur are off to a disappointing start in the 2024/25 campaign having secured just four points from as many games in the Premier League. Last Sunday, Spurs suffered a 1-0 defeat against arch-rivals Arsenal in the North London derby which sent the club down to the 13th position on the league table.

After the derby loss, the Australian manager told Sky Sports, "I'll correct myself – I don't usually win things, I always win things in my second year. Nothing's changed." The remark has not gone down well with the fanbase who criticised the coach for the arrogant comment right after a defeat at the hands of their fierce rivals.

WHAT ANGE POSTECOGLOU SAID

On Tuesday, while addressing the media in a pre-match press conference, the Spurs boss defended his remark as he said, "It's amazing, isn't it? I just stated a fact. Am I supposed to just lie or just say it never happened? But do you really think it's me sort of boasting? It's just confusing to me that people are making a big deal out of something. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to answer something that is true. I've just said something that's true, and it seems like it's upset a lot of people for some reason."

D'Arcy Short encouraged to work on his bowling after Australia omission

D’Arcy Short has been encouraged to keep working on his spin bowling by Australia coach Justin Langer after being left out of the limited-overs squad to tour England.Short, who has a career-best of 257 in List A cricket, was one of five names cut from the initial 26-man training group announced last month. He was the most notable absentee given he was part of the previous Australia team to take the field, against New Zealand in March, while the tour to England also includes three T20Is, the format Short has enjoyed considerable success in at domestic level. The reasoning behind Short’s omission has been explained as the fact he was filling Glenn Maxwell’s allrounder position in the ODI side earlier this year while there is also a crush for top-order batting roles. Maxwell was ruled out of the South Africa tour due to elbow surgery having earned a recall following time away from the game to manage his mental health.ALSO READ: Australian cricket will need to compromise to keep game going – LangerShort bowls left-arm wristspin and was used by Aaron Finch in two of the four ODIs he played against South Africa and New Zealand without picking up a wicket. With the bat he was asked to fill a middle-order role and made 69 in Bloemfontein. He had initially been recalled to the squad for the tour to India as a replacement for Sean Abbott but did not play in that series.D’Arcy Short steps out to drive•Associated Press

“I saw him [on Wednesday] play a practice game here yesterday in Perth, he played really well again as he keeps doing,” Langer said. “With him, he’s got the double chance, in the sense that he’s competing at the top of the order which we know he can do…and does that really well in domestic cricket [and] we need some allrounders in the middle.”And at the moment he’s competing with Glenn Maxwell who has come back into the team. He’s taken D’Arcy’s spot, mainly because we feel more confident getting overs at the moment out of Glenn Maxwell than we do out of Shorty in the middle overs. Shorty is really aware of that. He’s working very, very hard on his bowling.”Short is also unable to squeeze into the reckoning higher up the order at the moment with David Warner, Aaron Finch and Steven Smith established as the top three in ODIs and T20Is while Marnus Labuschagne will take the No. 4 position for the one-dayers.Matthew Wade is viewed as a versatile batsman who can cover a number of positions while the uncapped Josh Philippe, one of three new faces in the squad, is another option for the top order if required.

Langer said that the current supply of top-order options was one of the main reasons why Usman Khawaja continues to be unable to find a way back into the line-up. Khawaja only dropped out of the ODI side because of injury late in last year’s World Cup after averaging nearly 50 over a six-month period.”The way we’re going to split up our game plan at the moment Uzzie is competing with David Warner, Aaron Finch and Steve Smith at the top of the order. And at the moment our view is those guys are getting the nod ahead of him. I’m a massive fan of Usman Khawaja. He had an incredible year last year in white-ball cricket, but unfortunately he has two guys in Steve and David who are coming back into the team and they have the spot at the moment.”

Oliver Hannon-Dalby leads tireless Warwickshire bowling effort

Oliver Hannon-Dalby led a tireless Warwickshire bowling performance in strength-sapping conditions on the opening day of the Bob Willis Trophy match with Gloucestershire at Bristol. The tall seamer toiled away with precision in relentless heat to claim 4 for 24 from 20 overs as the home side were restricted to 191 for 8 after being asked to bat first, Ben Charlesworth top-scoring with 51.Hannon-Dalby received excellent support from skipper Will Rhodes and the rest of the Warwickshire attack on a slow pitch that ensured hard work for batsmen and bowlers alike.Run-scoring was never easy and 19-year-old Charlesworth deserved plenty of credit for his 124-ball innings that featured six fours. He lost opening partner Chris Dent with the total on nine, as the Gloucestershire captain got a thin edge through to wicketkeeper Michael Burgess off Hannon-Dalby, having made only two.Hannon-Dalby went on to complete a probing six-over opening spell from the Ashley Down Road End, which cost him only six runs and included four maidens.Tim Bresnan was equally accurate at the Pavilion End. But Charlesworth and Graeme van Buuren batted sensibly and gradually increased the tempo in a stand of 67, ended when van Buuren, on 33, edged former Gloucestershire team-mate Craig Miles to Ian Bell at third slip. It was 83 for 2 at lunch, with left-hander Charlesworth unbeaten on 39. He and George Hankins took the total to 102 before Rhodes introduced himself at the Pavilion End as the sixth bowler used.In his first over he had Charlesworth well caught low down by Sam Hain in the slips to end a hugely promising knock from the England Under-19 player, including some swashbuckling back-foot shots through the off side.Rhodes’ breakthrough sparked a collapse as Hannon-Dalby quickly followed up with lbw verdicts against Hankins and Ryan Higgins.Suddenly the hosts were in serious trouble at 103 for 5. Gareth Roderick and Jack Taylor were forced into watchful defence to stop the rot, the normally aggressive Taylor taking 32 balls to get off the mark. The pair took the score to 127 for 5 at tea, but the afternoon session had produced only 44 runs from 28 overs.Taylor, on 14, became Rhodes’ second victim when lbw pushing forward with the score on 155, and the Warwickshire skipper struck again five runs later when Roderick was brilliantly stumped down the leg side by Burgess, having contributed a solid 39 off 108 balls.Hannon-Dalby claimed his fourth wicket when George Scott, making his Gloucestershire debut following his move from Middlesex last autumn, fell leg-before having confidently moved to 17.Bresnan, who conceded 39 from 15 overs, and Miles, who went for 41 from 19 helped contain the Gloucestershire batsmen, while Henry Brookes recovered from a relatively expensive first spell to bowl his 17 overs for 52.It was an impressive effort from the Warwickshire seam bowling unit under cloudless skies, justifying Rhodes’ decision to field first. Tom Smith was unbeaten on 15 at stumps, having battled away for 59 balls. He and Josh Shaw will resume in the morning with nine runs needed for a batting point.”After six or eight overs when we saw how slow the pitch was there were one or two groans about my decision to field” Rhodes admitted. “But in the end it was a very good day for us. The way the bowlers kept running in was really impressive in that heat.”We were slightly off in the first session, but in the next two we put their batsmen under a lot of pressure. There was a bit of magic from Michael Burgess with the stumping. I can’t say I planned it, but he has been working hard on his glovework and was very good all day.”

Inter Miami got off to a bright start, but couldn't hold on as they drew 2-2 against Atlanta United at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

grabbed the lead much against the run of play, David Ruiz finding the bottom corner after receiving the ball unmarked in the box in the 29th minute. Miami entered halftime with a 1-0 lead but Atlanta would respond.

Saba Lobzhanidze equalized for the home side shortly before the hour mark, his deflected header squirming through the legs of Drake Callender in the 56th minute. Yet, Miami appeared to be in winning position as Leo Campana put Miami back ahead within two minutes of Lobzhanidze's goal, with Campana's free kick flying into the net via the legs of Dax McCarthy. Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez would then come off the bench looking to pad the visitors lead.

However, Atlanta would respond again, though. United's new star DP Aleksey Miranchuk curled in an effort into the top corner – his first MLS goal since joining the team this summer. It was no more than they deserved on the night.

How about a different inverted attacking midfielder impressing on Wednesday? Messi may have had his moments, but this night belonged to Miranchuk. The former Atalanta forward, known for his love of Hip-Hop, provided all sorts of rhythm for his side's midfield on Wednesday night.

He created three chances, played eight passes into the final third, and scored an absolute peach of a goal to grab a well-deserved point for his team. A fine performance from the big-money man.

THE BIG LOSER

What a miserable evening for Dax McCarthy. The veteran midfielder seemed to be at the center of everything that went wrong for the home side against Miami. First, he inadvertently diverted the ball into the path of Ruiz for the visitors' first. Then, he gave up the free kick that led to the second. It seemed to be a benevolent act when he was hooked after an hour.

BBC pundit says once-£100 million forward would prefer to join Tottenham

BBC Radio 5 Live pundit and former Tottenham defender Alan Hutton has claimed a once-£100 million forward would prefer a move to north London with Ange Postecoglou's side this summer.

Spurs ready to back Postecoglou as new attacker targeted

Reliable media news outlets, like The Times among many others, say Spurs are ready to back Postecoglou with more major signings when the transfer window reopens.

Sky presenter believes Tottenham will seal summer deal for £14m forward

He’s been praised for his “lightning” speed.

The Lilywhites are believed to be chasing a new centre-back, midfielder and striker, according to journalist Tom Allnutt, with Postecoglou also admitting recently that the Tottenham squad is in need of a real overhaul.

They've endured a disappointing run of Premier League form since the beginning of April, despite Postecoglou recording the best-ever start made by a new manager in the division's history. They've been on the wrong end of drubbings from Liverpool and Newcastle United in that time, whilst also tasting London derby defeats in blockbuster clashes against Arsenal and Chelsea.

Tottenham's last five Premier League matches

Tottenham 2-1 Burnley

Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham

Chelsea 2-0 Tottenham

Tottenham 2-3 Arsenal

Newcastle 4-0 Tottenham

Spurs very nearly dropped points at home to relegated Burnley last weekend as well, with star defender Micky van de Ven's excellent solo goal sparing their blushes in the 82nd minute and gifting Postecoglou a 2-1 win.

Despite this, Tottenham could still qualify for the Champions League following Aston Villa's thrilling 3-3 draw at home to Liverpool. If they manage to beat title-chasing Man City tonight, they'll go within two points of Unai Emery's side heading into the final day.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou

Regardless of whether they do manage to nick fourth, planning has already begun for the summer window, and striker targets have been named. Tottenham are laying the groundwork to sign a new number nine to replace Harry Kane, and they're said to be contenders for Brentford star Ivan Toney.

The England international, who scored 20 league goals last season, was even once valued at £100 million in the January window.

Hutton says Toney would prefer to join Tottenham

Speaking to Tottenham News this week, BBC pundit Hutton has claimed Toney would prefer to join Tottenham over rivals West Ham – who are also in the mix to sign him this summer.

“Maybe I’m a bit biased, but I think he would prefer a move to Tottenham,” Hutton said.

“I think playing in that stadium and the way that they play in this moment in time, I know it looks like Julen Lopetegui will be coming into West Ham and that could change things and Michail Antonio isn’t getting any younger so maybe they’re looking for somebody else to lead the line.

Ivan Toney

“He’d score goals for both teams, there’s no doubt about that. He’s scored a barrel load at Brentford, no disrespect to them but I think other teams will make more opportunities for him.

“I just think at this moment in time, Tottenham look like a team that is going to be chasing the top four, I’m not saying they’re definitely going to get in there, but they will be chasing and that could be a good opportunity for him.

“He could be the difference between them getting in and not getting in, in future seasons.”

Lasith Malinga set to miss initial part of IPL in UAE

It is understood his father has been ill and Malinga wants to stay back in Colombo

Lasith Malinga is set to miss the first part of the 2020 IPL for Mumbai Indians. ESPNcricinfo understands Malinga will not be travelling to the UAE, where the IPL will be played from September 19 to November 10, and will miss the initial games due to personal reasons. It is understood Malinga’s father has been ill and may require surgery in the coming weeks. The fast bowler wants to be by his side and will be training in Colombo. It is believed Malinga is likely to join Mumbai during the business end of the tournament, including the playoffs, where his experience will come handy.Malinga defended eight runs in the final over of the IPL final against Chennai Super Kings last year, that too after he had leaked 42 runs in his first three overs. Bowling the last over, he conceded just seven runs off the first five balls and then took a wicket, of Shardul Thakur, on the final delivery when the Super Kings needed two to win, to seal a record fourth title for Mumbai. One key factor that is likely to have contributed to Malinga’s decision is the current quarantine protocol imposed by the Sri Lankan government for people entering the country due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As per the rules, anyone entering Sri Lanka needs to undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine, which means Malinga would have had to remain in quarantine if he flew to the UAE and then came back to see his father at any point.Malinga, who turns 37 on August 28, has been one of the most valuable players in the IPL for Mumbai. He is the second-highest wicket-taker in T20s, behind Dwayne Bravo, and is also the highest wicket-taker in IPL with 170 wickets. He joined Mumbai in 2009 and has been retained by the franchise in IPL ever since. In 2018 he served as a bowling mentor, but last year Mumbai paid INR 2 crore to bring him back as a player, a decision that proved to be a winning investment.Although IPL is yet to release the tournament schedule, Mumbai are expected to play 2019 runners-up Super Kings in the first match as per the norm.Malinga last featured for Sri Lanka in a T20I during the home series against West Indies in March this year. Incidentally, he did not participate in the residential conditioning camps Sri Lanka Cricket organised in June and July.Mumbai may have numerous options in their pace reserves which this time include Jasprit Bumrah, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Trent Boult, Mitchell McClenaghan, Dhawal Kulkarni, and allrounders Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard, but it is Malinga’s experience that they will miss more than anything else.

Maresca must sell Chelsea dud who earns more than Gallagher & Jackson

It’s fair to say that the Chelsea faithful will be slightly underwhelmed by the way their side performed last season.

The squad as a whole struggled, finishing the campaign sixth in the Premier League, but there were a few standout players.

Cole Palmer was obviously the most influential – contributing with 42 goal involvements – but both Conor Gallagher and Nicolas Jackson played their role in carrying them to Europe.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at a Chelsea player who’s earning more than Gallagher and Jackson combined without justifying his salary on the field.

Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer for Chelsea

Malang Sarr’s Chelsea career

In the summer of 2020, Chelsea signed a promising young centre-back named Malang Sarr, who joined on a free transfer from Nice.

However, there’s no other way of putting it; his time at Stamford Bridge has been a complete disaster.

Chelsea's Malang Sarr

After joining four years ago, he was instantly set on loan to Porto, where he made 27 appearances across all competitions.

The following season, the French ace remained at the Blues, making his first Premier League appearance against Brentford in a 1-0 win. Yet, the 25-year-old would only go on to feature seven more times that season, and as of today, his total Premier League appearances still remain at eight.

Malang Sarr’s salary at Chelsea

During the 2022/23 campaign, Sarr headed back to France in a bid to revive his career, joining AS Monaco on a season-long loan.

Despite playing in three of his first five games at the club, the left-footed defender began to slip down the pecking order, starting just eight times all season in Ligue 1.

But where is Sarr now, you may ask? Well, he’s currently still at Chelsea after a move to French side Le Havre broke down in the January transfer window.

His future is not at the Blues, and he’s even been forced to train with the U21 side after being banished from first-team training, but what exactly does he earn?

Chelsea Players That Earn Less than Sarr

Player

Wage per-week

Thiago Silva

£110k

Cole Palmer

£75k

Nicolas Jackson

£65k

Conor Gallagher

£50k

Malo Gusto

£45k

Via Capology

Back in 2020, when he originally joined, Sarr signed a five-year deal that takes him to June 2025, a year from now.

Yet, he’s currently earning an astounding £120k per week, which makes him the ninth-most-paid player at the club.

For context, this means that the centre-back earns a higher wage than both Gallagher and Jackson’s salaries are combined, £115k-per-week.

Sarr is also paid more than other important first-team members who feature week in and week out, such as Palmer, Malo Gusto, and even the departing Thiago Silva.

It’s impossible to see Sarr lasting past the summer transfer window, especially given he’s made no appearances at all this season and he’s earning a huge salary.

Overall, it’s quite clear that Sarr will not be part of the squad that Enzo Maresca is looking to rebuild with, and he must be sold as a priority; otherwise, he will continue to rinse Chelsea right up until his contract expires in 12 months.

Rahul Chahar to CSK's Deepak: 'Stay strong, brother, get well soon'

It’s not known what Deepak is suffering from, but he’s part of the CSK camp, where more than 10 members have tested positive

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Aug-2020In a curiously worded Twitter message, Mumbai Indians legspinner Rahul Chahar has wished his cousin Deepak Chahar, of Chennai Super Kings, a “speedy recovery” and said he hoped he would “get well soon”. There has been no official confirmation about what Deepak is suffering from but he is part of the Super Kings camp in Dubai, where more than ten people have tested positive for Covid-19.Rahul Chahar, who is now in Abu Dhabi with his team, said in his Twitter message: “Stay strong brother…all my prayers for you”. The tweet, posted at 8:36 pm local time (10:06 pm in India), came on a day when the Chennai camp had already been dealt a blow with the exit of senior player Suresh Raina for the duration of the tournament.ALSO READ: Raina to miss entire IPL due to personal reasons

Deepak has been central to Super Kings’ attack in the past couple of seasons, often bowling in the powerplay and in the slog overs. Coming off an injury – he last played competitive cricket in December 2019 – Deepak was part of Super Kings’camp in Chennai, along with captain MS Dhoni, Raina, M Vijay, Ambati Rayudu, Piyush Chawla and L Balaji, the bowling coach, before flying out to the UAE.That camp has also come in sharp focus now because it was held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, and its neighbourhood, especially Triplicane, has become a Covid-19 hotspot. There has been no direct correlation established between the camp and the positive tests, though. The IPL is due to start on September 19, but the schedule is yet to be finalised. The setbacks in Super Kings’ camp is likely to put the IPL on alert as they are expected to play defending champions Mumbai Indians in the opener.
