Kane Williamson, Henry Nicholls doubtful, New Zealand call up Glenn Phillips as illness strikes

Glenn Phillips has been summoned as last-minute batting cover after illness hit the New Zealand camp ahead of the final Test in Sydney, forcing Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls to sit out training for the second day running.Mitchell Santner, whose position in the side was under scrutiny after two poor outings, has also come down with the bug, leaving the possibility that New Zealand’s resources will be stretched very thin as they aim to avoid a whitewash. Jeet Raval, who was dropped after the Perth Test, is currently the one spare batsman in the squad and the decision has been taken to fly in the uncapped Phillips on the eve of the game.Phillips averages 42.54 from 23 first-class matches – with four hundreds – and struck a century for New Zealand A against England late last year.”We’ve obviously got a few balls up in the air at the moment and we want to be on the safe side and have options,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said. “Glenn has been in terrific form this season and has good versatility with where he can bat and the roles he can play.”He’s been around the T20 team for the past couple of years so should feel comfortable in the environment. We’re still hopeful Henry and Kane will pull through and we will give them every chance to prove their fitness. If one or both are ruled out then we will consider our options and most importantly how they balance the side for this final Test.”ALSO READ: Preview – New Zealand seek pick-me-up in hazy SydneyShould Williamson be unavailable – and it would take a very severe illness to sideline him – Tom Latham would be the likely replacement as captain, although last year, when Williamson was ruled out of the Christchurch Test against Bangladesh that was subsequently cancelled following the terror attack , Tim Southee was in line to lead the side.Latham took on the official duties at a reception with the Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Wednesday and also did the pre-match press conference.Kane Williamson walks off after his dismissal•Getty Images and Cricket Australia

“[Kane] is obviously a great leader amongst this group and he’s passionate about this group, so I’m sure if there’s any chance of him playing, even if it is a small chance, he’ll certainly be playing,” Latham said. “It’s gone around the team a little bit which obviously isn’t ideal but fingers crossed, they’re resting up today and hopefully they’ll wake up and be good to go.”If we lost those guys it would be disappointing but we’ve got a squad of 15 who are passionate about this team, and whatever side we do play has the backing of the whole group that it’s the right team for the job.England’s preparations for the first Test against South Africa last week were severely impacted by illness which swept through the majority of the squad in the first few weeks of the tour and continued to strike players while the Test was in progress.ALSO READ: Somerville’s SCG journey – tears in the car park to Test cricketIt leaves New Zealand’s planning up in the air although if everyone is available for selection there is the potential for two changes to the bowling attack with Matt Henry replacing the injured Trent Boult and Will Somerville coming in for Santner. While the surface is expected to turn, it is thought unlikely they will field two spinners, particularly after the workloads Southee and Neil Wagner have had during the first two Tests. The series has been a chastening experience for New Zealand after they arrived with the hope of competing with Australia having risen to No. 2 in the Test rankings. They failed to cross 200 in the first three innings before Tom Blundell’s defiant century in Melbourne, in his first Test as an opener, provided belated resistance.”We haven’t played our best brand of cricket and I know the guys are excited about getting out there over the next five days and trying to put a good performance on the board,” Latham said. “Yes, the series is lost but it’s the Test Championship and points are up for grabs. We’ll be doing our best to put a good performance out there.”Tim Paine was expecting Williamson to be standing with him for the toss and was focused on Australia not letting up in their intensity after a dominant Test season which has seen them win all four matches, including two against Pakistan, so far by huge margins. In the Ashes series last year, Australia produced a poor performance at The Oval after they had retained the urn with a match to spare but Paine was confident his team had learned from the experience.”I wouldn’t say we took our foot off the pedal [at The Oval], but we’ve certainly learned how to handle that experience of having the emotional high of the win then switching back on really quickly,” he said. “We spoke this morning about making sure that we turn up tomorrow with the same energy and focus that we turned up at the Gabba. All I’ve asked tomorrow is we turn up expecting New Zealand to come out hard and expecting it to be another fight for five days. We feel if we can match them in that area that eventually we’ll be able to wear them down.”GMT 0800 The story was updated to include the news of Phillips’ call-up.

Survive and advance: Winners and losers as Trinity Rodman steals show, subs cause concern, and USWNT reach Olympic semifinals

GOAL examines who shined, who missed out, and what a quarterfinal win over Japan means for USWNT at Olympics

The USWNT are through to a semifinal matchup of the Olympics after a less-than-eventful game against Japan Saturday in Paris – that is, until extra time, when the U.S. finally sealed an impressive 1-0 victory with a clutch goal from 22-year-old Trinity Rodman.

The U.S. has now started an Olympic tournament with four wins for just the second time. The last came in 2012, when it ultimately beat Japan for the gold medal. And the USWNT now holds a 32-1-8 (W-L-D) advantage over Japan. The U.S. advances to the Olympic semifinals for the seventh time in eight tournaments and the 15th time in 17 total appearances at world championships, only failing to reach the semifinals at the 2016 Olympics and 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

“It’s not always flashy,” Hayes said about the tense match. “It’s not always what fans want to see, but this is football, and football requires different tactical abilities from game to game. We played the right game for the right opponent.”

Hayes also praised the Japan defense, saying “They’re exceptional. Their block is the best in the world at doing that, in terms of the way they shift, the way they step, the way they read the rotations. They work their socks off.”

Unfortunately, for the U.S. side, there were some knocks and bruises leaving question marks about who will be available for Emma Hayes’ side in the semifinal matchup against Germany Tuesday at noon ET. The USWNT beat the Germans 4-1 last week in the Olympic group stage.

And while the attack struggled to get past a parked Japan defensive unit, the unexpected absence of players was most concerning. Even before the quarterfinals, the U.S. were without Sam Coffey (yellow-card suspension) and center back Tierna Davidson (injury), so questions were obvious about how the midfield would perform, and who would be next to Naomi Girma. Korbin Albert joined Lindsey Horan in the midfield, and Emily Sonnet slid in beside Girma.

One of the biggest knocks to the team was in the late 199th minute when Emily Fox limped off. The Arsenal player has started in the backline for all four games in the Olympics, and was replaced by Casey Krueger. After more than 100 minutes of play, the U.S. got a tremendous game-winner from Rodman, and were able to slide into the next round of these Games. It was clearly a relief to see the burst of energy from Rodman in extra time, but subbing and looming injuries remain talking points heading into the semis.

GOAL breaks down the winners and losers from Saturday’s win over Japan.

Getty ImagesWINNER: Trinity Rodman

Trinity Rodman simply stole the show, as her 104th minute goal sent the USWNT through to the semifinals. Rodman was the only offensive spark for the U.S. side, as the entire regular time was essentially a snooze-fest.

The U.S. struggled to break through Japan's organized defense, and potential opportunities for goals were poorly executed. The game-changing moment came in extra time, when Rodman handled a ball from Crystal Dunn, cut inside and then shot a far-post stunner for the go-ahead goal.

That score made Rodman the youngest player to score an extra-time goal for the USWNT since the great Heather O'Reilly at the 2004 Olympics, according to Opta. It was Rodman’s third goal of these Olympics, following scores against Zambia and Australia.

She has now been directly involved in a goal in all four matches at the Olympics, the longest streak by any USWNT player at a major tournament since Carli Lloyd at the 2015 World Cup, and the longest by any USWNT player at the Olympics since Alex Morgan (6 straight) and Abby Wambach (5 straight) at the 2012 Games in London.

The goal was the ultimate decider, but Rodman's relentlessness to make things happen up-top was crucial for the U.S. When a team can defend as organized as Japan, every touch and moment on the ball matters, and Rodman took every opportunity she had to strike.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesLOSER: Emily Fox

Emily Fox didn't play poorly in the back for the U.S., but a late knock creates a massive question mark for the USWNT's defensive line. Also, given Fox's history with ACL tears and a long journey back to top-form, the concern is increased.

Fox has been solid for the U.S., dialed in one-vs-one, organized on the weak side, and attack-minded when there's space. Krueger came in for Fox in the 119th minute, and finished out the game for the U.S. side.

Getty ImagesWINNER: Naomi Girma

There's really no one more composed than Naomi Girma in the back. Despite missing Tierna Davidson, Girma was as steady and diligent as ever next to Emily Sonnet.

Between the two center backs, they completed 152 passes. When a defensive line is hard to breakdown, such Japan's compact formation, the center backs have to get comfortable knocking it back and fourth until a gap opens up.

Girma has been the core of the USWNT this tournament, and her ability to keep the team organized, alleviate pressure and balance out the field is top-class. If there's one person who must hold down the back for the USWNT, despite all of the injuries, it's Girma.

Getty ImagesLOSER: Jaedyn Shaw

Cleared to be a part of the 18-person roster on Saturday, there was an expectation that as a result of her inclusion, Jaedyn Shaw would finally take the pitch at these Games. Unexpectedly, though, she wasn't called upon – which only makes one wonder why she was brought into the roster in place of alternate Croix Bethune, someone who could have made an attacking impact on a day in which it was needed.

At some point, any minutes are good minutes, and heading into the semifinals, Shaw has yet to play this tournament. It's worrisome with such a thin bench and the tired legs of the attacking core on this roster. If she's declared fit for the semifinals, there should be an expectation that she plays, because on her best day, she's beyond influential. The decision not to use her Saturday was baffling.

Away from Germany, Man City have also allegedly made an approach for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. Should a number of players come in, there could be a plethora of exits, and it looks as if one specific departure is certain to happen over the coming months.

Joao Cancelo transfer update

Recently, City full-back Joao Cancelo, currently out on loan with Barcelona, hit out at claims that he was a bad teammate to Nathan Ake and Rico Lewis before his loan to Bayern Munich, where he was hailed as an "important player" by former Bayern director Hasan Salihamidzic.

Football Insider have now provided a new update on Cancelo’s future at Man City, saying that the Portugal international has played his last game for the club.

Cancelo doesn’t want to return to the Etihad following his loan at Barcelona, and the feeling is mutual, with City not wanting him back either.

It will be interesting to see where the £250,000-a-week defender ends up, especially following rumours of a move to top-flight rival Arsenal in recent days.

Chelsea had a nightmare outing during the pre-season having won just one friendly match out of six games including their tour in the United States. On Sunday, the Blues played their final pre-season match before the start of the 2024/25 season against Inter and managed to hold the Serie A champions to a 1-1 draw courtesy of a late strike from Lesley Ugochukwu.

Despite the series of poor results, manager Maresca chose to focus on the positives that he spotted in his team's matches as he claimed that he saw an improvement in their game against the Nerazzurri. He also remained confident that the Blues would continue to improve with time in the new campaign.

WHAT ENZO MARESCA SAID

Speaking to reporters after the friendly, the manager said, "Absolutely we can see clear results from our work. Today we could see that we tried to keep the ball. Inter are special at defending, but for sure the team is already doing well. It's the most important thing, for sure. With time this team is going to get better and better. We started just one month ago so I can see clearly that the team is improving."

The West London side will begin their Premier League journey on Sunday against reigning English champions Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.

Emery could ease Luiz blow by unleashing Aston Villa’s "top class" starlet

Aston Villa may not have played particularly well against Lille in midweek, but they secured progress into the semifinals of the Europa Conference League courtesy of a penalty shootout win.

They return to Premier League duty this weekend, facing a tough clash against Bournemouth as they look to keep up momentum in the chase for a fourth-placed finish.

Unai Emery will be without the services of Douglas Luiz however, as the Brazilian is set to serve the second match of his two-game suspension, meaning the manager will have to rejig his midfield.

Douglas Luiz’s Statistics this season

The former Manchester City gem has arguably been one of Villa’s standout performers this season, registering 20 goal contributions – ten goals and ten assists – across 47 appearances in all competitions, offering a dangerous threat going forward.

From a defensive viewpoint, Luiz has won 4.5 total duels per game, along with making 1.8 tackles and recovering 5.5 balls per game in the top flight.

His presence will of course be missed, but Villa did cope fairly well without him against Arsenal. Emery deployed John McGinn and Youri Tielemans at the base of the midfield in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Having gone the full 120 minutes in midweek against Lille, perhaps some rotation will be required, especially in the centre of the park

This could see a change or two and the Spaniard may call upon the services of a young talent who has shown plenty of potential recently…

Why Tim Iroegbunam should start against Bournemouth

The 20-year-old has played 11 times for the senior side this season as he looks to emerge as a regular member of Emery’s first-team squad.

Former QPR loanee Tim Iroegbunam.

Across his seven appearances in the Premier League, Iroegbunam has completed 90% of his passes, succeeded with 60% of his dribble attempts and won 1.9 total duels per game – a success rate of 50% – which proves he has the required attributes to be a success in the top flight for Villa.

During a loan spell at QPR last season, the youngster played 32 times in the second tier, gaining significant first-team action, which has clearly worked in his favour this term.

His manager during his spell in the Championship, Gareth Ainsworth, praised the loanee for his performances, saying: "He is a player to keep your eye on. There are certain things that, I believe, if he can add them to his game he will be a top-class player – he glides past people and can finish with both feet."

There is no doubt he has a tremendous future ahead, but it already looks as though Emery is gradually weaning him into senior action at Villa.

A start against Bournemouth could give him the opportunity to showcase his talents yet again, proving to the former Arsenal boss that he could be a key member of the side during the final few weeks of the campaign.

All that matters on Sunday is a win and securing three points.

Arteta struck gold selling Arsenal flop who’s now worth less than Nelson

Over the last couple of years, Arsenal have done a brilliant job of offloading fringe players, allowing the club to invest in the squad to try and end the 20-year wait for a Premier League title.

Players such as Joe Willock and Folarin Balogun have both departed the Emirates with the club for fees over £20m, with the pair only making a handful of appearances for the Gunners.

Subsequent fees have allowed boss Mikel Arteta to invest in players such as Declan Rice and David Raya, with the duo transforming the side and turning the side into genuine title challengers.

The club allowed one player to leave the club last summer, with the club conducting sensational business in offloading him given his dreadful record at his new club this season.

Matt Turner's stats at Arsenal

After joining the club for £7.5m from MLS side New England Revolution back in 2022, goalkeeper Matt Turner immediately took his place as a backup for Aaron Ramsdale, with the American only utilised in cup competitions.

During his solitary campaign at the Emirates, the 29-year-old failed to make a single Premier League appearance, with Turner only featuring seven times for the Gunners across all fronts.

He made five Europa League appearances and two starts in the FA Cup, with the 'keeper keeping four clean sheets in the process – a record that tempted Nottingham Forest into a move for the shot-stopper.

After agreeing a deal for current number one Raya, the club allowed Turner to depart the Emirates, swapping London for the East Midlands, with the two clubs reaching a deal of up to £10m for the USA international – with Arteta's side making a £2.5m profit despite his lack of game time for the club.

Matt Turner's stats at Nottingham Forest

His move to Forest has been an unsuccessful one, to say the least, with the 29-year-old already suffering the same fate as he did during his time in north London.

Turner arrived at the City Ground, becoming the number one choice between the sticks, but a catalogue of unforgivable errors has seen him drop to back up behind Belgian 'keeper Matz Sels.

The American notably gave the ball away in the 2-1 win over Manchester United, with Marcus Rashford punishing his mistake to leave Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville to claim that Turner is "useless" with his feet.

His mistake was one of a few that the struggling goalkeeper has made during the course of the season – having made three errors leading to a goal in the league – with the 29-year-old's market value dropping as a result.

Despite joining for £10m only seven months ago, Turner's value has dropped to £4.6m, as per Football Transfers with the shot-stopper now worth less than current Arsenal squad player Reiss Nelson, who has a value of £6.7m – after only managing 14 Premier League appearances this season at the Emirates.

Now worth less than one of Arteta's fringe assets, the Gunners made a great decision offloading the 'keeper, with it clear the American isn't up to the standard of what's required of a number-one goalkeeper in the Premier League.

Henry Nicholls, Martin Guptill, Colin de Grandhomme consign India to first whitewash in 22 years

New Zealand consigned India to their first bilateral ODI whitewash in more than 22 years*, riding on the efforts of a second-string attack missing Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry. Hamish Bennett’s four-for and some tight bowling around him made sure India managed only 296 despite their biggest gain of the series: a middle-order core of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer. The New Zealand players pose with the trophy•Getty Images

New Zealand made the chase seem more difficult than it should have been after a 106-run opening stand between Henry Nicholls and Martin Guptill. Regular wickets, though, brought back memories of the T20I series debacle, but Tom Latham and a charmed Colin de Grandhomme saw them through from 220 for 5.India might have lost the ODI series, but in Rahul they have solidified a No. 5 to fill the hole left by Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni. Rahul had already shown he could hit hard, hit from ball one and hit for a long time, but on Tuesday, he rescued India from 62 for 3 to score his fourth ODI century. And he did so without eating up balls at the start of his 113-ball 112. Rahul stayed at the wicket for 34.3 overs during which time India scored 207 for 2. Around that stay, though, New Zealand – not great in the field, mind you – managed to cause enough damage to restrict India to 296 for 7 despite the score reading 269 for 4 in the 47th over.If the similarities were not enough already, Rahul joined Rahul Dravid as the only India wicketkeeper with an ODI century outside Asia. Both were naturalised wicketkeepers who batted below their preferred position to suit the team’s needs. Incidentally, the last time an India batsman scored a hundred from No. 5 or lower was when Dhoni and Yuvraj were batting together, in January 2017 against England. That Cuttack ODI was also the last time India had crossed 290 with the top three’s contribution being under 20%. Not just Rahul, Nos. 4 and 6 around him played their role: Iyer scored a near-run-a-ball 62, and Manish Pandey made sure the runs kept coming with his 42 off 48 from 162 for 4.The day, though belonged to the New Zealand bowlers. Kyle Jamieson continued his impressive beginning by bowling Mayank Agarwal early, beating the outside edge after having gone past the inside one in the previous game. Virat Kohli played an uncharacteristic innings, getting beaten by wide deliveries early before hitting out to only the seventh ball he faced. This was the earliest he had hit a six in India’s innings. Kohli’s innings didn’t continue for long, though, as he cut Bennett straight to third man. Prithvi Shaw, looking in great touch once again, gave it away by running himself out, bringing in Rahul to join Iyer.During their last partnership, in the first ODI of this series, Rahul had sort of carried Iyer, but here Iyer was in better touch. He still kept hitting the ball in the air but never fell too far behind the 100 strike rate. Rahul looked imperious from the time he walked in, square-driving the second ball he faced for four. New Zealand turned to de Grandhomme and James Neesham soon after the early exchanges just like they had done in the first ODI. Runs kept trickling with a Neesham short delivery stopped at Iyer, who could only pop up a catch to short midwicket. The two added 100 in 110 deliveries.Mitchell Santner missed a run-out of Rahul on 64, and Pandey on 35 but did a good job of keeping a lid on the scoring. From the 39th to the 46th over, India hit only one boundary. There was a slightly strange element of risk aversion for a side only four down. When Rahul took the risk in the 47th over, Jamieson dropped him at long-off. Bennett, though, got his due reward with a similar chance next ball, with Jamieson hanging on this time. Pandey chose the next ball to try to hit a six, and even he could go only as far as long-on. Bennett’s mix of wide lines, hard lengths and knuckle balls worked well and only 86 came in the last 12 overs. It took New Zealand a little over 12 overs at the start to score those 86. Guptill took apart Navdeep Saini and also took a ten-run over off Jasprit Bumrah, who went wicketless in the series. It was eventually the legspin of Yuzvednra Chahal that dragged India back into the contest. Guptill fell to a ripper, but Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor chipped up soft catches to give India a look-in. Nicholls, consistently impressive as a naturalised opener, failed to convert yet again and fell 20 short of a hundred. Neesham took a fair go at a half-volley from Chahal but found Kohli at midwicket. Against the run of play, it was 77 runs required with the last recognised pair in.With Latham rock solid at one end, de Grandhomme chanced his arm as soon as he came in. A mis-hit fell short of a deep fielder, two less-than-ideal hits just about cleared the fence, and New Zealand were off again. Latham remained unbeaten on a soothing 32 off 34.
