Spurs: Son was a passenger vs Brighton

Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur side returned to winning ways on Wednesday evening, with Spurs overcoming Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 at the Amex – a result that saw Italian’s outfit close the gap on fourth-placed Arsenal – who lost 2-0 at home to Liverpool – to just three points.

However, despite the positives, there were still a number of Tottenham players who turned in disappointing displays over the course of the 90 minutes, with Matt Doherty, Sergio Reguilon and Heung-Min Son all having something of a game to forget against the Seagulls.

Although, it will undoubtedly be the performance of the latter of this trio which most concerned Conte, as the South Korea international was once again a passenger in the Spurs side.

Lost 100% duels

Despite having bagged two goals in his last five outings for Tottenham, in truth, Son has been off the boil for a number of weeks now – something that did not change over the course of his 80 minutes on the pitch against Brighton on Wednesday evening.

Indeed, the £140k-per-week forward was extremely ineffective in attack, failing to hit the target with a single shot, enjoying just 32 touches of the ball – the fewest of Spurs’ starting outfielders – completing a mere 22 passes and failing to find his intended target with either of his two attempted crosses.

The £72m-rated dynamo also offered his side little in a defensive capacity, losing all three of his duels, failing to make a single tackle or interception and ceding possession of the ball on six separate occasions.

These returns saw Son – who Danny Murphy claimed had “given up” after signing a new deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – earn an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.8 – with only Doherty earning a lower score of Spurs’ starters on the night.

Meanwhile, the Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick awarded the 29-year-old a four in his own player ratings, stating of the South Korea international: “Completely anonymous in another below-par display. Conte’s system does not appear to suit him but looks in need of a rest.”

As such, while Son is undoubtedly an exceptionally talented footballer, it is undeniable that the attacker badly failed both Conte and his teammates on Wednesday night – with questions now surely being asked as to whether the 119-goal forward deserves to keep his starting spot against West Ham United this weekend.

Celtic: Positive injury news on Welsh

Celtic centre-back Stephen Welsh could be fit to face Bayer Leverkusen despite being forced off injured at the weekend, according to The Daily Record’s Michael Gannon.

The lowdown

Celtic are due to travel to Germany to face Group G leaders Leverkusen on Thursday night. If they lose, and Real Betis beat point-less Ferencvaros in the other game, they’ll be out of the Europa League.

Welsh would automatically have been considered a doubt for the vital clash after taking an elbow in the head from St Johnstone’s Shaun Rooney in Saturday’s Scottish League Cup semifinal.

He had to be substituted off 12 minutes from time.

Injury expert Ben Dinnery told Football Insider that a ‘severe’ facial injury could require ‘surgical intervention’, sidelining Welsh for ‘months’.

The latest

Happily for Celtic, the ‘excellent’ Welsh seems to have escaped a serious injury. It’s ‘understood’ that he didn’t suffer from concussion in the wake of the clash.

And he could be in contention to face Leverkusen, who currently sit 4th in the Bundesliga.

The verdict

Intriguingly, Carl Starfelt is apparently ‘in the running to be involved’ at the BayArena, having returned to training.

So does Postecoglou go with Welsh after his Saturday scare or throw Starfelt back in for what looks a daunting test?

If there’s no risk of Welsh exacerbating the problem, then you’d arguably lean towards him, purely for that added sharpness. He’s played the last three games, and you wouldn’t want Starfelt to be caught cold in a game of this magnitude.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Issa Diop links

Crystal Palace have been linked with a late move for West Ham defender Issa Diop, according to ExWHUemployee, cited by Hammers News.

And, as to be expected, a number of Palace supporters have been reacting to the rumour on social media.

The report suggests that Diop has fallen down the pecking order at the London Stadium following Kurt Zouma’s arrival from Chelsea.

Patrick Vieira reportedly wants to add to his defensive ranks before the deadline, with a loan move for Diop a possibility.

The 24-year-old, who stands at 6 foot 4, has made 95 appearances for the Irons, but he is yet to feature during the current campaign.

The Frenchman is valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt and still has two years left on his contract, and it seems as if a late switch across London could be on the cards.

Nuno clear he wants to join Tottenham

According to Football Insider, a Tottenham Hotspur source has told the outlet that former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Nuno Espirito Santo has ‘made it clear’ he is keen on taking the job in north London.

The Lowdown: Spurs eyeing Nuno…

Tottenham fans have watched a host of different managers come in and out of the frame since the Lilywhites opted to sack former boss Jose Mourinho in late April.

Indeed, the likes of Julian Nagelsmann and Brendan Rodgers were touted as early frontrunners only for Spurs to move and hold talks with Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso in that order (BBC).

Now another coach appears to be in pole position for the role at Tottenham in Nuno, who guided ex-club Wolves to Premier League promotion.

The Latest: Nuno has ‘made it clear’ he wants to join…

As per a Lilywhites source speaking to Football Insider, the 47-year-old has now ‘made it clear’ he is ‘keen on taking the post’ at Tottenham with discussions going well during the subsequent period.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-2/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

There is apparently a ‘growing confidence’ among both parties that a deal can be finalised for his appointment and he could even be appointed the club’s new manager by the end of this weekend.

Nuno and Spurs have also agreed salary terms with only a few issues left to be ironed out, namely the makeup of his possible backroom staff.

The Verdict: Coup for Tottenham?

This comes as a pretty big development in the Tottenham manager hunt and one that could see their long search for a Mourinho heir finally reach it’s conclusion, but is Nuno the right man?

He doesn’t exactly fit chairman Daniel Levy’s original requirements for a free-flowing, attacking-minded coach – as outlined in his end of season letter to supporters.

Nuno does meet the standard when it comes to nurturing young talent and developing players, though, which is said to be another major pull for the role when it comes to Levy (football.london).

Lauded as a ‘genius’ by Matt Murray (This is Futbol), the Portuguese certainly has his credentials, like guiding Wolves to successive seventh-placed Premier League finishes and the Europa League quarter-finals before his underwhelming final year at Molineux (BBC).

He comes as a pretty mixed bag but could maybe steady the ship, with new managing director Fabio Paratici said to be a big admirer.

West Ham fans buzz over Joao Mario news

According to an update by ExWHUemployee, via West Ham News, the agent of former Irons loan star Joao Mario has already been in touch with the club regarding a move as manager David Moyes is possibly handed an opportunity to go for him again this summer.

The Portuguese midfielder enjoyed a brief stint in east London on loan from Inter Milan, starting 12 Premier League matches whilst notching two goals and an assist in that time (WhoScored).

He is currently out on a temporary spell again, this time at Sporting Lisbon, with there being a high likelihood he leaves the San Siro permanently this summer given his contract expires in 2022.

ExWHUemployee, sharing an update on his situation, claims the player’s agent has already been in touch with West Ham over a possible return.

Therefore, Moyes could move for the 28-year-old again as Irons fans rejoice at this news. Flocking to social media, plenty of supporters have begged the club to make a reunion happen.

Predicted Spurs XI vs Liverpool - team & injury news

Tottenham Hotspur could move into fourth place in the Premier League with a win over this evening’s opponents Liverpool as they welcome the defending champions to north London.

Spurs head into the encounter somewhat shrouded in mystery after Jose Mourinho hinted at injury troubles and refused to name which of players were struggling.

Although, the Evening Standard report that Sergio Reguilon has been ruled out for ‘around three weeks’ while Ben Davies is a doubt to face the Reds after being forced off in injury-time during their 4-1 win over Wycombe in the FA Cup on Monday.

It gives the Portuguese boss plenty to ponder going into such a crucial game. Liverpool have injury problems of their own and have failed to win in five straight league outings.

So with that in mind, what sort of XI could we see at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium tonight?

Here’s the lineup we’re predicting…

With league duties resuming, we’re likely to see club captain Hugo Lloris return between the sticks, taking over from cup-keeper and current back-up, Joe Hart.

Mourinho could turn to a back three as he has done in recent matches against Sheffield United and Wolves in order to combat the firepower on offer for the opposition.

The Spurs boss is without Reguilon while Davies may not be risked if he’s not passed fit to feature, meaning we may see Japhet Tanganga deployed on the left for only the fourth time in his career.

He was deployed in the role against Man City last season and helped keep a clean sheet. His debut even came against Liverpool, though on the other flank, and resulted in praise from the visiting boss, Jurgen Klopp. He said (via football.london):

“He played well. It was nice when the crowd cheered his name. It was his first Premier League game? Very impressive.”

Eric Dier and Joe Rodon could return to partner Toby Alderweireld, meaning once £42m club-record man Davinson Sanchez is axed whilst on the right, Serge Aurier comes back in after a bout of illness. He only made the bench on Monday.

Matt Doherty, like Davies, is a doubt too.

After it worked so well up at Bramall Lane, we could see that Tanguy Ndombele and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg partnership in the middle continue to thrive, especially after the 90-minute shift Moussa Sissoko put in against Wycombe, playing both in central midfield and then at right-back.

As a result, The Frenchman is dropped while fellow midfield ace Harry Winks, now valued at €40m (£36m) by CIES, also faces the axe.

Mourinho had to call upon Harry Kane and Heung-min Son to get the job done in the FA Cup and both will start here this evening.

Steven Bergwijn was well-rested and is also in contention to start over Gareth Bale and Lucas Moura, who both played over an hour on Monday.

It means there could be a total of nine changes with Carlos Vinicius and Erik Lamela also dropping to the bench.

Glasgow Rangers: Fans react to Joe Aribo photo

Glasgow Rangers have had a positive start to the new Premiership campaign.

The Gers currently sit top of the table after winning three and drawing one of their first four matches. So far, they are yet to even concede a goal, and have impressed in 3-0 victories over both St. Johnstone and St. Mirren, whilst they are currently six points clear of their fierce city rivals Celtic.

However, the goalless draw against Livingston on Sunday was their first real hiccup of the campaign, and it seemed they missed Joe Aribo’s creativity in the middle of the park – it is no surprise that the one game he missed in the league was the one match they have so far failed to win.

A photo shared on Twitter of the Nigeria international by the club’s official account has given the Gers fans the opportunity to wax lyrical about the 24-year-old. Indeed, he is already averaging three key passes, 2.3 dribbles and two shots per game in the league this term.

Many took to Twitter to share their thoughts, one even described him as the “guy Messi wants to be”, perhaps tongue in cheek given his strong start to the season. You can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

Simon Mignolet posts ahead of Man United clash

Simon Mignolet has been getting ready ahead of a Europa League tie against Manchester United, which he has posted about on Instagram.

The 31-year-old is now representing Club Brugge, in his native Belgium, who have come across the Red Devils in the European competition’s Round of 32.

He helped his side to a 1-1 draw in the first leg, even providing the assist for Emmanuel Bonaventure Dennis’ goal, when his goal kick went behind the United defence, setting the Nigerian up to lob Sergio Romero with a first-time effort.

This meant that the Belgian club go into the second leg level despite Anthony Martial’s equaliser.

While Mignolet will be focusing on ensuring he and his teammates progress to the next round, he has not forgotten his previous roots in England, adding “#YNWA” onto his post ahead of the tie.

This comes after he represented Liverpool 204 times, between 2013 and 2019, and shows he is still thinking of his time at Anfield.

Manchester City: Nigel de Jong’s verdict on Riyad Mahrez annoys some supporters

After Manchester City steamrolled past Burnley 4-1 at Turf Moor on Tuesday evening, lots of supporters were in dreamland over a convincing performance which begins a busy December period on a much-needed high – but Nigel de Jong’s comments on Riyad Mahrez seemed to have rustled a few feathers.Â

Two goals from Gabriel Jesus, a screamer from Rodri and Mahrez’s cool finish were enough to round off a superb victory in style on the night – with De Jong sitting in the pundit’s chair ahead of what seemed like a tough away trip for the Sky Blues.

The Dutchman was a real cult hero at the Etihad during his time at City, famous among supporters for his no nonsense approach to tackling and love for the fans.

‘There’s only one winner when De Jong goes sliding in’ rung around Eastlands during the pinnacle of his career in sky blue, with supporters wildly celebrating his first goal for the club against West Ham in 2011 – a feat that took nearly three seasons.

However, speaking to Amazon Prime via City Chief about the Burnley game, De Jong had a questionable take on Mahrez, stating:

“If you look at this season, I don’t really see Mahrez really doing that.

“He’s not really in form and they don’t have a lot of options when it comes to players who can give them that bit extra off the bench.”

Sheffield Wednesday fans slam Sam Winnall after Hull defeat

Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk was condemned to his first league defeat as Owls manager on Tuesday evening as substitute Tom Eaves scored the only goal of the game to hand Hull City all three points at the KCOM Stadium.

The striker powerfully headed home an Eric Lichaj cross just six minutes after entering the pitch to bag his first goal for the Tigers.

Monk, on the other hand, was without his main man Steven Fletcher, who has netted five already this campaign – his absence perhaps came as a shock as there was no news about the 32-year-old’s injury prior to the match.

Watch Sheffield Wednesday Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

It meant that Sam Winnall and Atdhe Nuhiu led the line as Monk continued to operate a 4-4-2 system.

The former Barnsley forward had the best chance of the game just after half-time as he directed a header of his own narrowly wide from a mere six-yards out.

His performance certainly failed to inspire many of the Hillsborough faithful with some taking to Twitter to share their thoughts on the 28-year-old.

One supporter compared the 5 foot 9 man to a former Wednesday flop by calling him an ‘English Stevie May,’ who scored just seven times in 42 appearances.

Winnall has only bagged five goals in 31 appearances, per Transfermarkt.
