Birmingham could sign a bigger talent than Cashin in "dynamite" £10m star

Birmingham City’s summer transfer business had seemingly gone quiet in recent weeks after some whirlwind activity in and out of the door early on at St. Andrew’s.

However, the typical chaos associated with the West Midlands side could soon be back on the menu as the Blues edge towards two new deals being completed.

Football League World was the outlet that exclusively dropped the news that Chris Davies and Co were very close to landing the signature of Werder Bremen attacker Marvin Duksch, whilst speedy developments elsewhere have now revealed that ex-Derby County centre-back Eiran Cashin is undergoing a medical to come to the Blues on loan.

Cashin will undoubtedly strengthen an already valiant Birmingham side at the back ahead of Championship football returning to St. Andrew’s, with the 23-year-old’s main footballing education to date coming in the EFL’s division when battling week in week out for the Rams.

Eiran Cashin for Derby County.

What Cashin can bring to Birmingham

Whilst he has found his time at Brighton and Hove Albion to date to be fraught with difficulties, as seen in his two minimal appearances in the Seagulls’ first team picture, the Irishman was a firm fan favourite when he was still plying his trade at Pride Park.

In total, Cashin would go on to make a mammoth 144 appearances for his boyhood side, as his final campaign donning Derby white resulted in him being pushed to his limits as he secured safety for the second-tier strugglers.

Still, the mature 23-year-old gave his all across the full campaign as John Eustace’s men just about kept their heads above water, with a crucial two goals coming his way from 39 Championship appearances, away from also averaging an imposing 6.8 duels won per second-tier match-up.

He shouldn’t be fazed by the prospect of returning to the division, therefore, as the “colossal” centre-back – as he was glowingly labelled by ex-Rams manager Paul Warne – now attempts to fit in next to his new, towering teammates at the back in the form of Christoph Klarer and Krystian Bielik.

Whilst Cashin is a standout buy on the surface, he is only used to that dog-fight mentality in the second tier, with a bigger talent than the former Derby number six now potentially on the agenda as they attempt to make their transition back to Championship life look as smooth as possible.

Birmingham targeting a bigger talent than Cashin

You would anticipate, for the amount of cash that has been thrown about, that the ambition in the Birmingham camp is to take the EFL’s elite division by storm, as opposed to just seeking out immediate safety.

If Mateo Joseph were to finally arrive on the scene at the Blues after being linked consistently with a statement switch this summer, he would want to be competing near the top-end of the division, too, with the £10m striker just fresh off a Championship title success with Leeds United.

The Spanish hotshot’s electric form off the bench for Daniel Farke’s champions last season would surely excite the Birmingham masses as to what he could be capable of at St. Andrew’s, with a blistering six goal contributions coming his way from just 11 league starts.

With Kyogo Furuhashi already at Davies’ disposal, alongside the incoming arrival of Ducksch adding in more firepower, throwing in Joseph into the mix too would make the Blues’ attacking options a real sight to behold.

Arguably, that final addition of the “dynamite” forward – as he’s been labelled by U23 football scout Antonio Mango – might just be the signing Birmingham need to get done to believe they can mount a shock promotion charge when the exciting 2024/25 season kicks off, knowing Joseph has been done and done that in the tiring division before.

Obviously, Cashin will also be a valued addition defensively, as Birmingham navigates the initial step-up.

But, Joseph could be that forward-thinking spark that helps the Blues to step it up a notch, away from merely securing survival.

He's a dream for Kyogo: Birmingham close in on signing "extraordinary" star

Birmingham City would get over Alfie May’s exit even quicker by signing this new attacker.

Man Utd now willing to pay asking price for another striker alongside Sesko

Manchester United are now willing to pay whatever it takes to sign another striker, even alongside their move for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, according to a report.

Man Utd closing in on deal for Sesko

Despite rival interest from Newcastle United, it now appears as though Man United are closing in on a deal to sign Sesko, and they are aiming to get it over the line as quickly as possible.

Alan Shearer has subsequently been left frustrated by Sesko’s decision to move to Old Trafford rather than St. James’ Park, saying: “It sounds as if Benjamin Sesko had two clubs to choose from in Newcastle and Man United. One that won a trophy last year and is now playing Champions League football this season – and one that didn’t win anything, finished 15th and had a dreadful season.”

However, it is a testament to the size of Manchester United that they have seemingly won the race for the Slovenian striker, but they may not be done there, with a report from Foot Africa revealing they are keen on signing another centre-forward.

Indeed, United are now prepared to pay whatever it takes to sign Fiorentina striker Bassidy Sanogo, who is attracting interest from a number of clubs, after impressing for the Serie A side at youth level.

It's not Sesko: "Unbelievable" £50m striker now really keen to join Man Utd

A Benjamin Sesko alternative is now ready to make the move to Old Trafford.

ByDominic Lund Aug 6, 2025

Stuttgart, Hoffenheim and Club Brugge are also named as potential suitors, but Fiorentina are determined to keep hold of the 17-year-old, which could make it difficult to get a deal over the line, although the Red Devils are willing to pay whatever it takes.

The teenager has been exhibiting promising signs for Fiorentina U18s, picking up six goals and two assists in 18 matches in the 2024-25 campaign, indicating that he could be an exciting long-term addition to Ruben Amorim’s squad.

However, it is far more important for Man United to bring in a ready-made striker, and Sesko could be the solution to their attacking woes, given that the 22-year-old now has two impressive Bundesliga seasons under his belt.

RB Leipzig's BenjaminSeskocelebrates scoring their first goal

Lauded as “outstanding” by former United boss Ralf Rangnick, the Leipzig star has scored 27 goals across the previous two Bundesliga campaigns, while also finding the back of the net four times in the Champions League last season.

Not only that, but the Slovenia international also outperformed Rasmus Hojlund’s attacking numbers in the year before the Dane moved to Old Trafford, indicating Sesko could be a real upgrade on the former Atalanta man.

He could surpass Salah: Liverpool now prepared to sign another £100m star

Things are moving apace. Liverpool have already replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold with Jeremie Frimpong and are advancing with deals for Florian Wirtz and Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez.

Talk about a show of intent. Talk about ambition. FSG have faced their criticisms across their time at the head of the Liverpool table, but the American owners are backing Arne Slot to the hilt this summer after the Dutch coach secured a Premier League title in his first term at the helm.

With a much-anticipated move for Wirtz, which could rise to a British-record £116m, set to be finalised in the coming days, hopes are morphing into expectations that the Reds will be right there in the title battle next season, throwing the heaviest punches and swerving the blows from Arsenal, Manchester City and the like.

What, then, should be Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes’ next move in the transfer market? Well, for all Anfield’s impressive dealings, the glaring point of contention still hasn’t been addressed: Liverpool need to part with Darwin Nunez and bring in a new number nine.

Why Liverpool need to sell Darwin Nunez

As far as statement signings go, Liverpool usually hit the nail on the head. However, Nunez has proven to be a blot on the copybook, never living up to the fixed £64m fee and actually regressing under Slot’s jurisdiction.

Back in February, Slot stated he “can’t accept” Nunez’s work rate following a slew of games which had turned little personal reward for the Uruguayan. Previous versions of the 25-year-old invariably provided a tenacious

A maverick, Nunez is powerful and instinctive, but consistent finishing has always eluded him throughout his time on Merseyside, and if it were not for Mohamed Salah’s extraordinary 2024/25 campaign, the striker’s woes might have been hung under a brighter, more blinding light.

Salah scored 34 goals and assisted 23 more across all competitions last season. Extraordinary. The Egyptian King turned 33 this month, though, and needs a more reliable frontman to keep him performing at his peak.

Well, Liverpool are acting with ambition, hoping to sign a star who might just prove to elevate the legend. Who knows, he may even surpass Salah’s greatness.

Liverpool line up new striker

According to Ben Jacobs for GIVEMESPORT, Liverpool are ready to place a record-breaking bid for Newcastle’s Alexander Isak this summer.

Liverpool’s current interest in the Sweden striker can be traced back to the start of March, when The Athletic’s David Ornstein confirmed the Reds had him at the top of their shopping list.

Newcastle United's AlexanderIsakcelebrates scoring their second goal

The Magpies, who won the Carabao Cup and qualified for the Champions League last term, would want north of £150m for Isak, but GMS claim FSG would be willing to offer £100m plus add-ons, which would eclipse the fee agreed for Wirtz.

How Isak could surpass Salah at Liverpool

Liverpool need a striker, all right, and Isak is their dream target. If sporting director Richard Hughes could pick any number nine across the globe, this is the man he’d move for.

Coming off the back of a 27-goal campaign with Newcastle, Isak, who has been hailed as “the best striker in the world” by analyst Raj Chohan, could be the most incredible addition to a Liverpool side already jam-packed with attacking quality.

Isak’s prowess, always improving, could even see him become a goalscoring machine under Slot’s wing above that of Salah, whose 34-goal season was frankly ridiculous.

Moreover, his unique approach to the attacking game could see him reach that pedestal on which Salah perches, surmounted above the rest of the Premier League’s attacking talent.

As per FBref, he ranked among the top 16% of strikers last season for shot-creating actions, the top 13% for progressive passes, the top 7% for progressive carries and the top 8% for successful take-ons per 90.

This protean attacking quality could see him join the likes of Luis Suarez and Fernando Torres as one of the most complete and electric number nines the Premier League has ever seen.

Would this make him a more dangerous forward than Salah? Who knows, but Isak definitely has the perfect style to dovetail into Slot’s system and bring a new level of direct goalscoring threat.

And it must be said, Liverpool have certainly felt the force of the Sweden striker’s skills, Isak having scored a stunning goal against them at St. James’ Park last year before bagging in the Carabao Cup final, a strike which proved definitive.

But it’s not just his goalscoring. Isak has the capacity to outstrip even Salah’s ridiculous goal per game rate at Liverpool (0.61), with his Newcastle average currently at 0.57.

As he continues to go from strength to strength, Isak could hit a truly staggering flow, especially given that he would be playing among some of the best in the business (including Salah, whose playmaking has hit another level over the past couple of years).

Whether Isak would finish a potential Liverpool career with a greater legacy than Salah is tantamount to splitting hairs. In all likelihood, he’d fail on that front, for Salah has transcended pure quality on the field to immortalise himself in Liverpool lore.

However, Isak’s ability to score is a special thing – pundit Alan Shearer has described him as a “world-class assassin” – and if signed to the Liverpool cause and allowed to foster relationships with Salah and Wirtz, his goalscoring record could form something not witnessed on Merseyside.

Wolves join battle to sign "brilliant" free agent who may replace Semedo

Amid speculation that Nelson Semedo could be on his way out of the Midlands at the end of his contract this month, Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly joined the race to sign an instant replacement.

Semedo films Wolves farewell

Having already lost both Rayan Ait-Nouri and Matheus Cunha to Manchester City and Manchester United respectively, the last thing that Wolves need is another departure. With just a matter of weeks remaining on his current deal, however, Semedo looks destined to hand the Midlands club exactly that. The right-back’s future remains in doubt and he has seemingly been pictured filming what may well be a farewell to the fans at Molineux.

With another departure on the cards, Wolves could be in for a hectic summer ahead of Vitor Pereira’s first full season in charge. So far, the Portuguese manager has done everything right in charge of the Midlands club, but he will be desperate to ensure that the good times continue even without stars of Ait-Nouri and Cunha’s calibre.

The Wolves boss told reporters in the final stages of last season: “Of course, we need players. We need to be stronger next season, competing for every game. What I learned is that with this level of focus, we cannot compete with these kinds of teams.

Dream Ait-Nouri successor: Wolves set to make salary offer to sign £10m ace

Wolves could be close to signing a Barcelona defender

ByRoss Kilvington Jun 9, 2025

“It means next season we must be better, we must compete inside (the club). If you don’t compete inside, then you have problems — you must compete inside the club every day in training. You must have competition for your position. The players are not happy for sure (with the result) because they know they can do better.”

With that need for players, it looks as though Wolves have wasted no time before turning towards an experienced defender who could arrive to replace Semedo this summer.

Wolves join hectic Coufal race

According to Football Insider, Wolves have now joined the race to sign Vladimir Coufal alongside Premier League rivals Everton and Leeds United. The veteran right-back left West Ham United as a free agent after five years at the club, but could yet get the chance to stay put in England’s top flight even without the Hammers.

Vladimir Coufal in action for West Ham vs Newcastle

A player who would match Semedo’s experience, Coufal still has something to offer after leaving West Ham and Wolves should take full advantage. Statistically speaking, the 32-year-old wasn’t far off matching Semedo every step of the way last season.

Hailed as “brilliant” by former West Ham boss David Moyes during his time with the Irons, Coufal may not be a long-term option, but he does represent a bargain candidate to instantly solve a pending problem for Wolves.

As a free agent, the ball could be in Coufal’s court this summer and it doesn’t look as though he’s going to be short on Premier League options.

Rangers set to sign versatile forward who's been convinced by Ibrox project

With the 49ers Enterprises looking to make their mark, Rangers are now reportedly set to sign a versatile forward who has become convinced by the Ibrox project ahead of the summer transfer window.

The 49ers' Rangers project

Set to complete their takeover of the Scottish giants, the 49ers will be hoping to turn things around at Rangers and transform the Gers into the dominant champions they once were. As seen at Elland Road and Leeds United already, too, the American owners are perfectly capable of leaving their mark on a club and achieving their goals.

However, with a new manager needed and Celtic’s Scottish Premiership dominance only growing stronger, the extent of the 49ers’ task at Rangers cannot be overstated. And they must get things right this summer.

To that end, a number of names have already been linked with the job at Ibrox. The likes of Rafael Benitez represent the experienced choice, whilst Steven Gerrard would perhaps be the one that splits the most opinions after how he left Rangers for Aston Villa in 2021. Meanwhile, other names such as Danny Rohl and Davide Ancelotti would certainly be intriguing to watch in their own right.

Sheffield Wednesday manager DannyRohl

With the Scottish Premiership now concluded for another season too, the Gers may have their answer sooner rather than later over just who steps into the role. The end of the campaign also means the end of Barry Ferguson’s interim role in charge of the club, but he has reiterated his desire to take the permanent role more than once.

The interim boss told reporters in recent weeks: “Everybody’s got an opinion, I don’t care about people’s opinion, I know I can do the job. I know I’ve got a real good staff behind me. I’ve been asked this question two or three weeks in a row, I think it’s clear, it doesn’t scare me one single bit.”

Meanwhile, away from the dugout, it almost goes without saying that a large part of the 49ers’ project will be the recruitment that they go in pursuit of this summer, which looks set to start with a Paris Saint-Germain talent.

Rangers set to sign versatile PSG forward Oumar Camara

According to RMC Sport’s Fabrice Hawkins, Rangers are now set to sign Oumar Camara from PSG this summer, with the versatile young forward convinced by the project in Glasgow. The teenager has captained PSG’s U19 side this season, but is set to secure a surprising move to Scotland in the coming months – likely becoming the first signing of the 49ers era.

Not just Butland: Rangers flop may have played his last game at Ibrox

Several Rangers players wont be at the club next season after the 2-2 draw with Hibs.

ByRoss Kilvington May 17, 2025

At just 18 years old, whether Camara would make an immediate impact at Ibrox remains to be seen. The winger, who can play on both sides, has enjoyed an impressive season at youth level, scoring nine goals and setting up another four in 25 games in all competitions. After failing to feature for the first team, however, the young Frenchman looks set to leave in pursuit of senior football.

Whether Camara’s reported arrival is a sign of things to come at Rangers will also be interesting to watch, as the 49ers attempt to build their project and turn things around at the Scottish club.

Man City can forget De Bruyne & Gibbs-White by unleashing 17-year-old star

Manchester City captain Kevin De Bruyne will leave the club this summer after 11 glory-laden years at the Etihad.

The Belgian has made over 400 appearances for the club, but his contract won’t be extended into the 2025/26 season.

Kevin De Bruyne

This means Pep Guardiola will be on the lookout for a potential replacement for the 33-year-old when the summer transfer window opens in a few weeks.

There have been a few names linked, and one is starring in the Premier League already; Morgan Gibbs-White.

Manchester City make Morgan Gibbs-White a key target

According to the Daily Mail, City are now considered the frontrunners to sign the Englishman in a mega summer deal.

Any potential move will cost the club significantly, however, as Nottingham Forest value the midfielder at around the £100m mark.

They have paid this fee before, signing Jack Grealish in the summer of 2021, but will they look to splash out again? Especially given their spending spree in January.

Gibbs-White has been impressive this term. Across 31 matches, he has scored five goals and grabbed nine assists, helping Forest into the Champions League places in the table.

Do City have to spend this sort of money to find a De Bruyne replacement ahead of next season? Or do they have one lurking in the academy, waiting to be unleashed in 2025/26?

How City can forget De Bruyne and Gibbs-White

Guardiola has been brewing several young talents over the last couple of seasons. The likes of Phil Foden and Rico Lewis have made great strides under the Spaniard while Nico O’Reilly is now forging a real career for himself at the Eithad.

Manchester City's NicoO'Reillycelebrates after the match

Yet, he’s not the only youngster looking to make a positive impression heading in the 2025/26 campaign.

Indeed, Divine Mukasa could well be the next one to make the step up and showcase his prodigious talents for the club.

The 17-year-old has been in simply sublime form this term, scoring 17 times while also registering 25 assists across just 37 matches for the U18s and U21s this term, highlighting how effective he has been in the final third.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Academy scout Antonio Mango has hailed Mukasa as a “game changer” amid his wonderful contributions this season, and it looks like the time has arrived for Guardiola to unleash him at senior level.

He has even gained caps at U18 level for England, making his debut against Portugal in September last year and going on to play a further four times for his country at the time of writing.

A natural attacking midfielder, there is no doubt Mukasa could be City’s very own Gibbs-White should he make the grade at senior level. He has a keen eye for goal, but also loves creating plenty of chances for others in the final third.

If Guardiola wants to save the club around £100m, promoting the 17-year-old and giving him a few minutes here and there could be the best policy ahead of next term.

After a few years, the supporters might even forget about the exploits of De Bruyne with Mukasa himself having compared himself to the Belgian.

It’s safe to say this kid is the real deal. That much is certain.

Unlike Mike Gatting, she knew the moment she heard the death rattle exactly what had happened to her. She dared not look back. But the replay will be kind to her, no matter how deflating it will be to watch.King said after day one she hoped Warne was watching from on high and enjoying her ripping a few legbreaks in front of the MCG’s southern stand that bears his name. Warne would have loved this one.King bounced into Dunkley, and in her words “fizzed” a beautiful legbreak out of her fingers at 72.1kph. It drifted and dropped outside leg stump. Dunkley leaned forward and presented the full face of the bat. From a surface that had 9mm of grass on it, that seamers have dominated on in the men’s game, the pink-ball gripped and spun sharply past Dunkley’s bat at the hit off stump.

“It was a good delivery wasn’t it,” England captain Heather Knight said with a wry smile post-match.”I thought it was outstanding,” Alyssa Healy said.King was modest in her appraisal.”I’ve seen one replay of it, so I can’t really give it a lot of thought,” King said. “But I’m just stoked that I did it at the MCG with a pink ball in hand and with a baggy green on as well. So it’s pretty special.”What King did in this series was pretty special. She was not selected to bowl a single ball in Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign last year. Her first four Test matches had yielded four wickets at 60.50.In the last Ashes series, she played just three of the seven matches, taking four wickets at 41.75. Eighteen months later she is player of the Ashes, with 23 wickets at 11.17 with two five-wicket hauls, including nine in the Test match, to equal the multi-format series wickets record.”I think she’s improved a hell of a lot as a cricketer and as a spinner,” Knight said. “I think the last couple of years she’s really added more revs to what she does. I think she found the pace quite well on this wicket.”She probably bowled a bit slower than she did in the white-ball stuff, and got a little bit out of the surface.”She obviously drifts the ball quite a lot as well. She gets that side spin. And, yeah, that was a pretty good ball to Dunkley.”But we need to find ways to play her a bit better. I think finding a way to counteract what she was doing and try and find a way to score runs and try and put her off her length a little bit. But certainly she’s been really challenging and bowled particularly well.”Related

She was a captain’s dream for Healy. In both innings of the Test match, she bowled unchanged for her entire spells, never once looking unthreatening.”Just the impact she was able to have every time she had the ball in the hand,” Healy said. “Something felt like it was going to happen and she never let one of the English batters settle at any point in time. So for me, that’s exactly what you want from your spin attack in any of the formats, and Kingy was able to provide that. So I’m pretty proud of her.”For King, it’s been a long road trying to master a difficult craft. A road that’s included a move across the country from Victoria to Western Australia, away from family and friends, all in pursuit of becoming the best legspinner she can possibly be.”I’m trying to enjoy it as much as I can, and I try to do it with a big smile on my face, because legspin is probably not the easiest gig going around,” King said. “There’s going to be hard times when you’re doing some training sessions and it’s not coming out as well as it has been, and that can be back-to-back sessions. You might feel great one day and feel absolutely rubbish the next day, but it’s the work that’s gone in, not just in this series, but in the years before that, to help me get to this level.”But every time that I put on the Australian shirt, I absolutely have a ball. Whether I do well or not, it’s for the team. And to see this team go 16-0 in a pretty big series is something that I’m pretty proud of.”King made it look easy throughout these Ashes and tormented England with some deliveries that will live long in the memory.

Smart Stats: Du Plessis edges out Gill as MVP, Siraj ahead of Shami among bowlers

Jadeja the only CSK player in top ten of MVP list; Maxwell and Klaasen top two in Batting Impact charts

Shiva Jayaraman30-May-2023Du Plessis edges out GillFaf du Plessis, and not Shubman Gill, is the most valuable player of the IPL 2023, according to ESPNcricinfo’s Smart Stats – an AI-powered tool that considers match context in valuing batting and bowling performances. Du Plessis collected 59.38 Total Impact points per match for his performances – the highest for any player to have played at least seven matches in the season. Gill came second with 56.85 average points. Not for the first time, Royal Challengers Bangalore’s batting was heavily reliant on their top order, and du Plessis was the vital cog with consistent contributions. He made 40 or more runs ten out of the 14 times he batted, with eight of those scores contributing at least 30% of RCB’s totals in the match. All these runs came at a decent clip of 153.6.ESPNcricinfo LtdThe Player-of-the-Tournament and the Orange Cap winner Gill was part of a team that had more batters who took up the slack when Gujarat Titans needed them. Apart from Gill, there were five other batters in the Titans line-up who scored 250-plus runs this season. Contributions from other players in the side, or the lack thereof, is one of the inputs that’s considered in arriving at pressure on a batter, which directly affects the value of runs scored by them. Smart Stats reckons du Plessis’ runs came under more pressure than Gill’s. Gill, however, earned 966.40 Total Impact points this season, which was much higher than du Plessis’ 831.36Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was adjudged the Emerging Player of the Season, is at No. 3 followed by Mohammed Siraj and Axar Patel. Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Heinrich Klaasen missed out on the top five by a whisker with his Total Impact per match being 48.01, a fraction below Axar.Klaasen’s lone hand makes an impactWith SRH’s batting unit struggling through most of the season, Klaasen was the standout batter for them, often scoring runs when the team was on the back foot. He batted at No. 5 or lower in eight of his 11 innings in the season, and despite having had to bail out SRH on a few occasions, he struck at 177.1. No other SRH batter who faced over 20 balls had a strike rate in excess of 150. Klaasen’s 448 runs in the season were only the 12th most by any batter this season, but his runs were made with little support from the other end. This meant that the Batting Impact per innings Klaasen had in the season was the fourth best after du Plessis, Gill and Jaiswal. Suryakumar Yadav was ranked fifth on this list among batters to have played at least ten innings.ESPNcricinfo LtdMaxwell makes it countMuch like Klaasen, Glenn Maxwell was another batter who could have probably had a greater impact had he faced more balls. A solid opening pair in Virat Kohli and du Plessis meant Maxwell often didn’t come in to bat early enough. Seven of his 14 innings in the season started after the tenth over of the innings. He faced only 218 balls this season despite batting at Nos. 3 and 4. There were 26 other batters in the top seven who faced more balls than Maxwell did. However, only a few batters made each ball count as Maxwell did. Among batters to have faced at least 100 balls in the season, Maxwell’s Batting Impact per ball of 2.49 was the highest. Klaasen had the second highest Batting Impact per ball at 2.28.ESPNcricinfo LtdAjinkya Rahane, who played a few impactful cameos through the season like the 13-ball 27 in the final, is fourth on this ladder ahead of Suryakumar. Nicholas Pooran, who played a similar hand for Lucknow Super Giants, slots in at No. 3.Siraj ticks all the boxesThere were eight bowlers who took more wickets than Siraj this IPL, but the RCB pacer overtook all of them to top the Bowling Impact charts. Siraj was his team’s spearhead, and RCB largely bowled him when the outcome of the matches wasn’t already a forgone conclusion. Siraj consistently delivered in these situations, providing his team with crucial breakthroughs and tight overs. The 17th over of Super Giants’ chase in Bengaluru serves as a perfect illustration of Siraj’s impact with the ball. Chasing 213, Super Giants required just 28 runs from the last four overs, and had the momentum, having scored 93 runs in the previous six overs.Siraj gave away just four runs in the over and took the wicket of Nicholas Pooran, who had scored 62 runs off just 18 balls until then. Pooran’s wicket almost won RCB the game, with Super Giants managing to squeeze out a win only off the last ball of the match with a bye. The three wickets Siraj took in the game had a Smart Wicket value of 5.4.According to Smart Stats, his 19 wickets this season were worth 26.37 Smart Wickets. Smart Stats considers the importance of each wicket, given the match situation and the quality of the batter, and gives them a value that could be more or less than 1.Mohammed Shami – the Purple Cap winner – came second to Siraj in terms of Bowling Impact per match despite taking 28 wickets in the season which were worth 33.96 Smart Wickets. This is the highest value of Smart Wickets for any bowler in any season in the IPL. However, Shami’s Smart Economy was 7.91 compared to his actual economy of 8.03. In comparison, Siraj’s Smart Economy was far lower at 5.80, which meant that Siraj bowled economically in clutch situations far more often than Shami did. The impact he made through such spells was enough to pass Shami to the pole position.Piyush Chawla, Nathan Ellis and Varun Chakravarthy round up the top five in terms of Bowling Impact per match among those who bowled in at least seven matches.

CSK punched above their weight, yet againIn yet another season, Chennai Super Kings were more than the sum of their parts. Only one of their players made it to the top ten of the most valuable player ranks in terms of Total Impact points earned per match. Ravindra Jadeja was CSK’s highest-ranked player at No.9 on this list. Ruturaj Gaikwad was the only other player who made it to the top 20. Titans had three players and Mumbai Indians had four. RCB too had four in the top 20, including two in the top five. Their failure to make it to the playoffs underlined the fact that you need more than a few big stars to win the IPL.
