Free-spenders can't buy consistency

Despite splashing money this season, Mumbai Indians were rarely at the top of their game and most of their wins came through last-over heists

Siddarth Ravindran24-May-2012

Where they finished

Fourth. A disappointment as it’s a lower finish than last year despite the vast amounts spent on refurbishing the squad, including getting three solid Indian IPL performers to plug perceived weaknesses.

Key player

Once again Lasith Malinga was a stand-out performer, particularly in the first half of the season. His form tailed off a touch towards the end of the campaign and he finished with his worst IPL performance of 2012, leaking 41 as MS Dhoni and Dwayne Bravo went on the rampage in Bangalore. Still, he was indisputably their go-to bowler, and 22 wickets at an economy of 6.30 show why. The cocktail of yorkers, bouncers and slower balls continued to bamboozle batsmen, and underscored why he remains among the finest Twenty20 bowlers around.

Bargain buy

Not too many candidates for this category, as Mumbai Indians’ cheaper acquisitions in the auction didn’t get too many games. Perhaps Dwayne Smith, who joined a month into the tournament in place of the injured Mitchell Johnson, fits the bill. He made a dramatic entry, thumping Ben Hilfenhaus for six, four and four off the last three balls of the match to snatch victory over Chennai Super Kings. There was also an unbroken 163-run stand with Sachin Tendulkar, against Rajasthan Royals, in his first innings as an opener.

Flop buy

Dinesh Karthik was brought in from Kings XI Punjab for a reported $2.35m and though he gave Mumbai Indians the solidity they lacked last season behind the stumps, he failed to put in any match-turning performances with the bat. Given plenty of chances at No. 4, Karthik provided neither the stability when the top order failed nor the power-hitting towards the end of the innings. One of only four Mumbai Indians players to take part in every game of the campaign, he finished with a disappointing 238 runs with a strike rate of 111.73.

Highlights

The opening match of the season featured the two pre-tournament favourites and was a game Mumbai Indians completely dominated: Super Kings’ intimidating batting line-up was dismantled for 112 before South African Richard Levi’s quick half-century on IPL debut completed the demolition. Another highlight was the victory at Eden Gardens that snapped Kolkata Knight Riders seven-game unbeaten run, with Rohit Sharma providing a reminder of his talent with a silken century. Their tenacious defence of 120 against Pune Warriors underlined their never-say-die spirit in a season where they won six matches in the final over.

Lowlight

Undoubtedly, the surrender at home to Delhi Daredevils, when they capsized to the lowest total of the season. They were thrashed in a couple of other matches as well, but there’s a difference to being blown away by an assault from the likes of Chris Gayle or MS Dhoni, to the defeat against Daredevils. The game began with Davy Jacobs’ 10-ball duck, a leading contender for worst innings of the tournament, and hardly improved. At 44 for 6, there were in line for the unwanted record of being bowled out for the smallest total in IPL history.

Verdict

Every year Mumbai Indians seem to fortify their squad, but every season they have ended up short. The arrival of Karthik, RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha seemingly provided them with the strongest Indian contingent of any side in the tournament, but that was offset by mediocre seasons for two of their retained players, Sachin Tendulkar and Harbhajan Singh.Finding a destructive opening partner for the staid Tendulkar (by Twenty20 standards) proved vexing, as the South Africans Levi and Jacobs failed, as did Australia’s Aiden Blizzard and Herschelle Gibbs was injured for much of the tournament. Mumbai Indians ended up trying eight different combinations, with only the James Franklin-Tendulkar combination getting more than three matches together. The tinkering continued lower down the order as Mumbai Indians struggled to find four in-form overseas players. Several of them made a splash in their first game before fading away – Levi, Robin Peterson, Gibbs and even Smith till he was made to open. A settled combination was elusive, and Mumbai Indians tried as many as 24 players in all, the most by a franchise this season along with Deccan Chargers. In contrast, other successful teams used far fewer players: Kolkata Knight Riders (18) and Chennai (17).The team did well in the league stages with plenty of back-from-the-dead wins but there weren’t enough dominating performances by either the team or the individuals – only Rohit Sharma made it to the top 15 run-getters of the season and Lasith Malinga to the 15 most economical bowlers (min 20 overs).

Tamim and Mahmudullah show their Test credentials

It took until the final session on the second day at Chittagong for Bangladesh to produce their first disciplined display of Test cricket in this series

Andrew Miller in Chittagong13-Mar-2010It took until the final session on the second day at Chittagong for Bangladesh to produce their first disciplined display of Test cricket in this series, as Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah combined in a fourth-wicket stand of 94 that may not be sufficient to change the momentum of this match, but was nevertheless a timely reminder that the side really has been making progress in recent months. Their defeats may still be stacking up, but the small victories are starting to come about more frequently. To call their stand a victory is still being charitable, however, because picking the positives out of the first two days of this match has involved as many forensics as your average LA homicide. When Mahmudullah lost his patience in the final half-hour of the day, to be caught off a top-edge by Paul Collingwood at slip, it left a gap in Bangladesh’s defences from which they are unlikely to recover in a hurry, especially once Shakib Al Hasan had followed in the day’s penultimate over, bowled by his own impetuosity as much as Graeme Swann’s guile. But all the same, Bangladesh can but soldier on and soak up the experiences, good, bad and downright ugly. Mahmudullah was one of their individual success stories from the recent tour of New Zealand, on which he made his maiden Test hundred while batting at No. 8, and today he showed the technical correctness and sufficient cool under fire to prove that his promotion to No. 5 is on merit, rather than out of desperation.”I always enjoy my batting,” he said. “The team want me to bat at No. 5 and I said ok, no problem, I can go for it. In New Zealand a couple of weeks ago there was a situation like this and we made a very good recovery. So I still hope we can make it in this Test as well. We have got our batting depth. Still Mushfiqur [Rahim] and Naeem [Islam] is there, and Tamim is still there. If we are able to bat properly we can achieve a good total.”Batting properly seemed alarmingly beyond their remit in the opening exchanges of Bangladesh’s innings, however. For all the progress that Imrul Kayes has made in one-day cricket, with a century and two fifties in his 13 matches to date, his cluelessness against the short ball was alarming for an international opener. In 18 previous Test innings, Kayes’ highest score was 33, and when Stuart Broad set to work on him, it wasn’t hard to see whyIn the space of three deliveries, Broad clanged a bouncer off Kayes’ grille and away for four byes, tucked him up with a rib-tickler, and then extracted the limpest of pulls for Matt Prior to complete the dismissal. Junaid Siddique was scarcely any more comfortable with the ball spearing into his ribs, while Aftab Ahmed’s credentials have been long under scrutiny. At 51 for 3 in the 12th over, a three-day finish looked to be on the cards. But the gulf in class between Tamim at the top and Mahmudullah at No. 5 was as sizeable as the difference between their scores and the men sandwiched between them in the order. But on the evidence they produced today, not even the harshest judge could question the Test credentials that those two men produced. With the possible exception of Mashrafe Mortaza in 2003 and the 16-year-old Mushfiqur in 2005, their alliance was the most combative performance that England have yet encountered in the course of three Test series between the sides.”Today we lost a couple of early wickets, two quick wickets for us, but Tamim and I had a good partnership, and I think we both enjoyed it,” said Mahmudullah. “I am hopeful, the pitch is still good and I would say we had some poor shot selection. But Tamim is still at the crease and we have a good depth in our batting. I am hopeful that we will be able to avoid the follow-on and get a good score.”Tamim may need to stay at the crease for several hours yet to save Bangladesh from that fate, but the skill and maturity of his innings once again augured well for the future. By smoking Stuart Broad’s first delivery through point for four he sent out a message that he would not be cowed, and it was reiterated soon afterwards when he lifted a Broad bouncer for six. But in between whiles he knuckled down to defend, for 84 dot-balls all told, while ever mindful of the chance to attack, as he did with 13 fours and a six.”Tamim has been batting brilliantly, especially today,” he added. “The moment he went out to the crease, he was positive from the beginning and played some very good shots. That was very good to watch. But since we have been playing on this pitch, we see it offers some turn on the first day and with every passing day it reduces and becomes flat. It is still like that, doing nothing extra. We have to come up with a very good batting performance tomorrow.”

Knight challenges England players and hopefuls to 'dominate' regional games

Skipper says domestic players can stake claims ahead of T20 World Cup and the Ashes

Heather Knight, England’s captain, has challenged her squad to “go out and dominate” in regional cricket this summer and hopes domestic players will stake strong claims for selection ahead of the T20 World Cup and the Ashes later this year. The 50-over Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy begins on Saturday with a full round of games and while many of England’s centrally-contracted players will miss the opening weekend to attend Tammy Beaumont’s wedding, they will have some opportunities to feature for their regions ahead of England’s T20I series against Pakistan, which starts on May 11.”It’s never a closed door, if people are performing well,” Knight said at the ECB’s launch of a national tape-ball competition. “The standard of those regional games has gone through the roof in the last couple of years, so those performances are worth more. It’s a really exciting time and obviously we’ve got huge competition in the squad as well.”You want to see England players go and dominate, and really put their name forward to keep being in that England side. It’ll be an individual basis as to who plays what… most of us will miss the first round at least. But I always keep a close eye on what’s going on, what young talent is coming through, and it’s going to be no different this year watching those games.”Related

There is substantial competition for places in England’s T20 set-up ahead of the World Cup in Bangladesh later this year, and Knight took confidence from the recent 4-1 series win in New Zealand. “We’ve got Mahika Gaur [who missed the tour due to school commitments] and Freya Kemp coming back from injury as well,” she said. “We’ve got a real depth of players we can pick from.”It’s super exciting. It makes selection a lot of tougher and sometimes you have more unhappy players – which is completely fine. It’s a really good place to be. With that World Cup in October, it’s really important that we keep moving forwards… Bangladesh is a tough place to go and play, so that’s the focus of the summer: trying to get in a really good place, ready for that tournament.”England were without four first-choice players for the first three T20Is in New Zealand due to their Women’s Premier League commitments, which gave them the opportunity to test their depth. With the chance to bat in the top three, Maia Bouchier was the tour’s breakout star and finished the T20I series as the leading run-scorer with 223 in five innings.Knight bats at the ECB’s launch of a national tape-ball competition in Birmingham•ECB/Getty Images

“She had a really good tour, particularly in the T20s off the back of a really good summer last year,” Knight said. “She’s always had the talent, but she’s just starting to work out how to manage herself in the middle and how to convert her talent into performances. That has been pretty cool to watch. She’s someone that you watch and think, ‘how does she play that shot?'”It’s remarkable, some of the shots she’s played. Obviously she had a brilliant tour, and now for her it’s about building on that and having that consistency. She’ll get a bit of a run in the team, particularly in that T20 opening spot which we haven’t quite nailed on so for her to grasp that [means that] she’ll get a little bit of a run. Hopefully, she continues the form that she’s had.”Edgbaston have already sold more than 10,000 tickets for England’s opening match of their T20I series against Pakistan, and Knight believes that the ECB’s joint marketing campaign with the men’s series against the same opposition can help build on the commercial success of last summer’s Ashes series.”It was a really awesome summer to be involved with: you felt the support and momentum for cricket around the country,” she said. “It’s obviously slightly different to an Ashes summer, but the amount of people that came along and – anecdotally – have said, ‘we want to come back, we want to come watch you guys’ has been pretty cool. Hopefully we can put on a show.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

RB Leipzig are yet to respond to United's offer but the Red Devils believe that Sesko would rather head to Old Trafford than St James' Park, according to David Ornstein. United have already spent heavily this summer, bringing in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to bolster their attack after struggling for goals last season. Amorim's side have also been credited with interest in Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins but appear to have prioritised Sesko instead.

David Warner’s missing baggy green has been located four days after he announced it had been lost in transit between Melbourne and Sydney ahead of his final Test. The backpack containing two caps, including Warner’s original from his Test debut in 2011, was found at the team hotel in Sydney although how it got there remains unclear. Warner posted a video on social media on Friday morning holding his original baggy green and thanked those involved for finding it.Related

Qantas, the freight company, our hotels and team management. Thanks [sic] you. In the video he added: “Any cricketer knows how special their cap is and I will cherish this for the rest of my life.”A Cricket Australia spokesperson said: “The bag in which they were packed was found at the team hotel, with all the contents inside. The movements of the missing bag are unknown despite extensive searches and the review of CCTV footage at multiple locations and the efforts of numerous parties since Tuesday.”When Warner revealed the cap, which had been inside luggage transported separately to the players after the second Test, had not arrived in Sydney he said that if the backpack had been taken by someone they would not be in trouble if it was returned.Ahead of his final Test, Warner used a loaned fresh cap from Cricket Australia for various photoshoots then when Australia fielded on the opening day.”It’s a huge relief David’s cap has been located and a big thank you to everyone who was involved in the search,” Nick Hockley, the CA CEO said. “We really appreciate it.”

Mahika Gaur, Bess Heath earn maiden England call-ups for Sri Lanka series

Fast bowler Mahika Gaur and wicketkeeper-batter Bess Heath have been named for the first time in England’s white-ball squads for the ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka later this month, but there is no 20-over return for Tammy Beaumont, despite her outstanding recent form across formats.Gaur, 17, has earned her call-up after a series of eyecatching displays this summer, most recently for Manchester Originals in her maiden season of the Women’s Hundred. As a left-arm seamer capable of swing from a high release point, she has previously represented UAE in 19 T20Is, and was a key member of the Thunder squad that reached the Charlotte Edwards Cup Finals Day in June.Meanwhile, 21-year-old Heath was part of Northern Diamonds’ Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy-winning side of 2022, making a crucial 44 in their two-run victory over Southern Vipers at Lord’s, and has made a further 249 runs at 41.00 in this year’s campaign. She has also featured in all of Northern Superchargers’ 2023 Hundred matches to date, including a quickfire 23 not out from 10 balls against Trent Rockets last week. Both Gaur and Heath have been part of the England A set-up in recent seasons, including the recent warm-up matches against Australia A ahead of the white-ball leg of this year’s Women’s Ashes.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

There’s no return to the T20I set-up for one of England’s stars of that Ashes campaign, however. Beaumont made a career-best 208 in the one-off Test at Trent Bridge, plus key matchwinning performances in the ODI leg of the series, but she’s been overlooked for the shortest format, despite making more history last week with her 118 from 61 balls for Welsh Fire against Trent Rockets, the first century in the Women’s Hundred.Another young star of the women’s set-up, Freya Kemp, returns to the 20-over squad as a specialist batter as she continues to recover from a stress fracture in her back, while fast bowler Lauren Filer – who impressed with her raw speed on debut in the Ashes Test – receives her first T20I call-up.England will be missing a number of star players in the course of the six white-ball matches. Sophie Ecclestone and Sophia Dunkley are being rested from the entire campaign, which begins in Hove on August 31 and ends at Grace Road on September 14, while Nat Sciver-Brunt and Danni Wyatt will miss the T20I and ODI legs respectively, to manage their workloads.”We have named a squad with a good blend of youth and experience and see this as an important series to test the depth of playing pool,” Jon Lewis, England’s head coach, said. “We have some exciting, new young players coming in who we are looking forward to working with.”Mahika [Gaur] is a very exciting talent. Left-arm swing bowlers of over six-foot tall are unique in women’s cricket. Mahika has shown consistently this summer that she is a threat with the new ball and we are excited to see how she performs at international level.”Bess [Heath] is an all-action cricketer who impacts games and is a great fit for us and how we want to play. She impressed in the A team games against Australia earlier in the summer and she also provides cover for Amy Jones with the gloves.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“With a World Cup coming up next year it’s imperative we develop the squad and players can gain international caps and experience. The chance to play at venues around the country is exciting. It’s great the opening fixture against Sri Lanka at Hove is now sold out. After an incredible Ashes summer, we want to maintain momentum on and off the field and look forward to getting started.”Meanwhile, an ECB Development XI will take on Sri Lanka in a warm-up fixture at Arundel on Monday 28 August. The squad will be announced once the final three teams to progress in the Hundred are confirmed.England T20I squad Heather Knight (capt), Lauren Bell, Maia Bouchier, Alice Capsey, Kate Cross, Charlie Dean, Lauren Filer, Mahika Gaur, Danielle Gibson, Sarah Glenn, Bess Heath, Amy Jones, Freya Kemp, Issy Wong, Danni WyattEngland ODI squad Heather Knight (capt), Tammy Beaumont, Lauren Bell, Maia Bouchier, Alice Capsey, Kate Cross, Charlie Dean, Lauren Filer, Mahika Gaur, Danielle Gibson, Sarah Glenn, Bess Heath, Amy Jones, Emma Lamb, Nat Sciver-Brunt

Balderson bails out Lancashire top order

Composed 94* lifts visitors to 295 for 7 on opening day at Edgbaston

ECB Reporters Network19-Jul-2023Lancashire 295 for 7 (Balderson 94*, Bailey 75*) vs WarwickshireGeorge Balderson bailed out Lancashire’s misfiring top order on his return to the team for the LV=Insurance County Championship clash with Warwickshire at Edgbaston.Back in the side in place of the departed Colin de Grandhomme, Balderson struck a correct and composed unbeaten 94 off 202 balls to lift his side to 295 for 7 on the opening day.The 22-year-old went in with Lancashire in deep trouble at 91 for 5 and showed the concentration and shot selection required on a slow pitch which was used for Vitality Blast Finals Day last Saturday. He received excellent support in the last session from Tom Bailey, with a career-best 75 not out from 134 balls, as the eighth-wicket pair added an unbroken 145 against an attack which lacked the sustained incision to press home their early advantage. It was a hard-fought cricket as a pitch which, four days earlier, had delivered 821 runs, 71 fours and 23 sixes, surrendered runs grudgingly as it aged. The sense of transition surrounding the Lancashire side at the moment was illustrated by five changes from the team beaten by Essex at Blackpool last week. Balderson, Daryl Mitchell, George Bell, Jack Morley and Danny Lamb came in for de Grandhomme Dane Vilas, Rob Jones, Tom Hartley and Jack Blatherwick. Lamb was called up late after Luke Wood and Blatherwick reported injuries in the warm up.Warwickshire chose to bowl first and soon broke through when Luke Wells feathered a leg-side catch to wicketkeeper Michael Burgess off Chris Rushworth. Josh Bohannon’s fluent 33 off 43 balls, in a stand of 47 with Keaton Jennings, ended with an inside edge to the keeper off Ed Barnard before the pressure increased either side of lunch with the loss of three wickets for 16 runs in 27 balls. Phil Salt dragged on a loose drive at Olly Hannon-Dalby, Jennings edged debutant Mir Hamza to second slip and Bell edged Hannon-Dalby to third.Mitchell and Balderson added 58 in 19 overs, the former striking Danny Briggs and Rushworth for sixes, before another two wickets fell in eight balls. Mitchell (35) top-edged a sweep at Briggs and Lamb, drawn into playing away from his body, edged Barnard behind. With Lancashire 150 for 7, the home side looked well-placed to build on last week’s crushing of Kent, which has had some in the West Midlands talking of a surprise title push, but Balderson and Bailey dug in deep. The Red Rose know how to fight back against Warwickshire and the eighth-wicket pair invoked the spirit of Southport, 1982, when the Bears declared their first innings on 523 for 4… and lost by ten wickets.Balderson passed 1,000 first class runs and Bailey surpassed his previous career-best 68 as the new ball failed to inflict damage. Hamza’s first day as a Bear – with 1 for 89 – was one to forget but Balderson’s day was one to remember with pride, especially if he acquires the six runs he needs to complete his maiden century in the morning.
