Revelation of the series for New Zealand. The compact technique, the cool head, the wide array of strokes heralded a new Test star on the horizon. Former New Zealand players who saw him bat reckoned he should go on to score at least 15 centuries. He scored two in the first two Tests, coming in at 40 for 3 and 23 for 3. The second was a double. Was perfect at gully and, at times, third slip.8
Chris Martin
Was the spirit that kept New Zealand high. Ran in over after over against the most experienced batting line-up. Made a successful comeback from injury and overcame the selectors’ reported reluctance to field him. Repaid captain Daniel Vettori’s faith by ending as the second-highest wicket-taker in the series.6.5
Ross Taylor
Flashy, rode his luck, but had 322 runs at 64.4 and two centuries to show by the end of the series. If he tightens up his aggression at the start of his innings, he and Ryder can form the core of a solid middle-order for years to come. Was the most impressive slip fielder on view too.6
Brendon McCullum
Very impressive behind the stumps, and did his bit with the bat too. Made sure New Zealand didn’t lose the first Test by an innings. Kept India on the field for long enough with an aggressive century in Napier. His catch of Rahul Dravid in Wellington, moving down the leg even as he shaped to paddle, was spectacular.Iain O’Brien
Didn’t have the results to show for it – nine wickets at 50.22 – but has the makings of an ideal first-change bowler for New Zealand. Hits the seam hard, and could have done with more seam movement from the pitch. His batting improved a lot as he scored 61 runs and helped avert an innings defeat in Hamilton along with McCullum. Had totalled 61 in his previous 14 Tests.5
Daniel Vettori
Big disappointment as a spinner, to the extent that he was more useful as a batsman. Scored a century in Hamilton, from 60 for 6, without taking undue risks. Will irk him that he couldn’t do more in Napier when New Zealand were the only team who could win with two days to go. Led the side fairly well, though.Jeetan Patel
Was the surprise package from New Zealand. Unlucky to have missed out in Wellington, where the pitch was expected to assist the fast bowlers more. Bowled really well in Napier, drifting the ball, getting it to turn too, and dismissing well-set batsmen – Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir twice.4.5
James Franklin
Came into the side as a specialist No. 6 batsman, riding on a successful domestic season with the bat. Didn’t contribute much in the first Test, scored 52 in a total of 619 in the second, failed again in the first innings in Wellington, and scored 49 in the second after the series was lost. Was a much better bowler with swing in the air in Wellington, and generally deserved better series figures than 1 for 290.4
Daniel Flynn
Showed his grit in the second innings in Hamilton, and also in trying desperately to get fit in time for the second Test. But scored only 12 runs in three other innings, and got out edging outside off too frequently for a No. 3 batsman.3
Martin Guptill
Showed flashes of brilliant strokeplay, but also showed his inexperience in the longer format of the game. Had already shown his preference for the front-foot play rather unsubtly, and Zaheer Khan kept troubling him with the short ball. But Guptill is not a stickler, and is one of the better top-order batsmen around in New Zealand.2
Tim McIntosh and Jamie How
On evidence from this series, didn’t look good enough for a Test top order. McIntosh got into trouble too often, didn’t use his height as he didn’t bend his knee, and barring one ordinary decision, contributed to his own demise with limp shots outside off.How got just one match and 11 balls, and didn’t do much to help his average of 22.Collectively, the top three, though still inexperienced, gave New Zealand their biggest headache with starts of 40 for 3, 75 for 3, 23 for 3, 80 for 3, and 84 for 3.Kyle Mills and Tim Southee
Neither of them showed signs of having recovered from the beating they got in the one-day series. Mills’ problems with no-balls continued, Southee continued to struggle for swing. Between them they gave away 271 runs for three wickets in one match apiece as Martin struggled for support from the other end.

Damion Downs scored his first preseason goal for new club Southampton, and it just so happened to come with U.S. men's national team boss Mauricio Pochettino watching on.

With his side down 2-0 to another of Pochettino's former clubs, Espanyol, Downs netted in the 92nd minute, pulling one back in the final moments of Southampton's eventual 2-1 defeat. With time waning, Downs broke through down the right-hand side to get onto the end of a through-ball, rifling a first-time finish into the back of the net to start life with his new club with a bang.

"It was a nice experience," Downs said after the match. "Obviously, scoring as a striker is the nicest thing you can do…It's been very nice. The staff are great, my teammates are great. Everyone around the whole team is great. It's been very welcoming so far, so I'm looking forward to more."

Downs joined Southampton this summer after a breakthrough with Koln in the 2. Bundesliga last season, seeing him score 11 goals to fire the team to promotion. The Saints, who will play in the Championship this season, paid $9.5 million to acquire his services shortly after his run through the Gold Cup with the USMNT.

The goal came in front of Pochettino, who just had a summer-long look at Downs throughout the Gold Cup. Downs dealt with a few injuries, limiting him a bit during his first camp with the USMNT, but he did still have one major moment as he netted the winning penalty in the quarterfinal shootout win over Costa Rica. In total, Downs earned five caps this summer, coming off the bench in each of them.

Saturday's goal, then, will surely have made an impression on Pochettino and his staff as they now look ahead to September camp, with Downs one of the candidates to be involved at the striker position. Pochettino had previously coached both clubs, getting his start at Espanyol before breaking through in England with a single season with Southampton.

Captain Hayley Matthews led West Indies to a drought-breaking six-wicket victory over Ireland in their Women’s T20 World Cup match at Newlands. The result ended West Indies’ 15-match losing streak in T20Is and knocked Ireland out of the tournament with a third straight loss in the competition.

Rashada Williams gets demerit point

Rashada Williams was fined 15% of her match fee and received one demerit point for breaching Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct during an incident in the sixth over of West Indies’ innings, when, according to an ICC statement, she made “deliberate physical contact” with bowler Leah Paul after being run out. Williams accepted the sanction and there was no need for a formal hearing.
Demerit points stay on a player’s record for 24 months. At any point, if a player reaches four or more demerit points, it equates to a ban. This is the only demerit point currently on Williams’ record.

Chasing 138, Matthews hit an unbeaten 66 and took the team home with a ball to spare. Earlier, Orla Prendergast’s 61 gave Ireland their highest total in a T20 World Cup. However, they collapsed at the end to finish on 137 for 9 which wasn’t enough.

Matthews did the bulk of the scoring after being dropped on 8 and helped West Indies chase down 138 after a shaky start. West Indies lost opener Rashada Williams and Shemaime Campbelle for 46 runs before the halfway mark. Adding to that, they did not have Stafanie Taylor, who was stretchered off the field during West Indies’ previous game against India, and had to miss out this time with a back injury. Chedean Nation was also ruled out with a knee problem.Against that backdrop, Matthews took the responsibility to stay to the end and ensure the job was done. After seeing through the pitch with a run-a-ball 22, she picked up pace and found boundaries regularly off her trademark cut shots off the back foot. With Chinelle Henry at the other end providing a crisp 34, Matthews kept going strong to stitch a crucial 74-run stand off 55 deliveries for the third wicket. En route, Matthews brought up her seventh T20I half-century in 42 balls and slammed eight fours and a six in her 53-ball innings. That Ireland were sloppy in the field also helped West Indies.

Record partnership for Ireland

Ireland dominated the first 15 overs before collapsing in the last five after opting to bat first. Prendergast and Gaby Lewis started briskly to keep the scorecard ticking in their 90-run partnership for the second wicket. After Shamilia Connell struck in the second over to remove Amy Hunter, West Indies struggled to break the partnership. From scoring 5.5 runs an over in the first six, the duo – with the stand dominated by Prendergast – shifted gears to take the run rate to 9.11 from seven to 15 overs.Prendergast started off with a glorious strike over extra cover for four and brought up her third T20I half-century in 40 balls with a slog-sweep over deep midwicket. In her 47-ball stay, she blasted six fours – three of which came through the covers – and one six.It was also the highest partnership for Ireland Women in a T20 World Cup match. Lewis, on the other hand, was happy to play second fiddle, contributing 22 off 24 in the stand.

Ramharack, Fletcher strike late blows

West Indies got back into the game after 15 overs with Karishma Ramharack and Afy Fletcher striking at the death to spark Ireland’s collapse. It began with the key wicket of Lewis (38), who was looking to up the ante after Prendergast’s dismissal, and was trapped lbw by Ramharack. Two deliveries later she bowled Louise Little, who was promoted ahead of captain Laura Delany.Eimear Richardson then punished Henry for two fours but Fletcher came back with a double strike, conceding just one run in the 18th over, to strangle Ireland. In no time, Ireland went from 115 for 2 to 137 for 9, losing six wickets for a mere 22 runs. Connell, who removed Hunter and Prendergast, accounted for Leah Paul in the final over to end with 3 for 24.

ESPNcricinfo staff21-May-2024The new women’s domestic T20 competition in Australia will now be aligned to the eight WBBL clubs, alongside an ACT side, rather than state teams after pressure from Victoria and New South Wales over the proposed structure.The tournament, designed to make up for the reduced WBBL which has been trimmed to a 40-game regular season, was initially going to be state-based but Victoria and New South Wales, who both provide two teams in the WBBL, were unhappy with that model and feared some of their fringe players could potentially lose out on playing opportunities.Under the solution thrashed out by the states and CA, there will now be eight teams under their WBBL banners plus a side from ACT who play in the WNCL one-day tournament. The competition will take place before the WBBL season with each side playing four matches and the top four teams moving to the semi-finals.The timing of the tournament means it will run alongside the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh so the Australia players won’t be involved which naturally opens up spots in teams while overseas stars are not expected to feature prominently.A complicating factor will be around ACT who have a number of players contracted to WBBL clubs including key batter Katie Mack who plays for Adelaide Strikers.With the WBBL being trimmed to match the BBL in an attempt to manage the increasing workloads of the game’s leading players, ensure overseas names still want to join, encouraging growth in crowds and to cut out non-primetime matches, there was a strong push to ensure that there was not an overall reduction in matches for state cricketers.The restructuring of the women’s domestic programme was announced at the launch of CA’s Women’s and Girls Action Plan last month but since then the stance of Victoria and New South Wales has required reworking of the original plans.”Cricket NSW has always been committed to the success of the Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder and the tournament announced today will help both of our clubs in their quest for WBBL success and to produce players for Australia,” New South Wales chief executive Lee Germon said.”That enhanced player pathway is in the best interests of Australian Cricket and provides further opportunity for the continued success of our national women’s teams.”The delay in confirming the structure of the competition also meant that state contracts, which would normally have been confirmed by the end of April, were put on hold amid the uncertainty.The new T20 competition will raise the average female domestic player salary for 2024-25 to AU$163,322 while the current WBBL salary cap has been maintained meaning no reduction in player payments.

Will Pucovski, the Australian top-order batter, will play county cricket for the first time in April after signing a short-term deal with Leicestershire to cover for Wiaan Mulder.Pucovski, 25, is widely considered one of Australia’s brightest young talents and made his Test debut three years ago, playing against India at the SCG. But he has faced multiple setbacks in his fledgling career, suffering regular concussions and also taking leave from the game to manage his mental health.He has had a quiet Sheffield Shield season for Victoria, playing five matches and passing 50 only once, but averages 43.94 across his first-class career and made 62 in his maiden Test innings, opening the batting alongside David Warner.With Mulder unavailable at the start of the English summer while finishing the domestic season in South Africa, Leicestershire have brought Pucovski in for the first five matches of the County Championship season. Aos 15 minutos do primeiro tempo no confronto que classificou o Tricolor para a grande decisão do torneio continental, o meio-campista sofreu um entorse no joelho durante uma disputa de bola e teve que ser substituído pelo jovem Pablo Maia. O jogador deixou o Morumbi de muletas, conforme mostraram imagens divulgadas em redes sociais por jogadores e o próprio presidente Julio Casares.

A lesão foi diagnosticada após exame de imagem realizado pelos médicos do Tricolor nesta sexta-feira (9), no CT da Barra Funda. Seguindo a programação do departamento médico, o jogador já iniciou o processo de recuperação com os profissionais de fisioterapia do Reffis.

Neves foi contratado em 2021 e disputou 40 jogos pelo São Paulo, sendo 28 nesta temporada. Seu contrato com o São Paulo somente até o fim deste ano. Para adquiri-lo em definitivo, o Tricolor terá de desembolsar US$ 1,7 milhão (cerca de R$ 8,7 milhões) e a gestão Julio casares já notificou o Nacional, do Uruguai, que realizará o pagamento.

É a quarta vez que o uruguaio se contunde nesta atual temporada. Em março, ficou de fora por seis jogos após sofrer um estiramento na panturrilha. Em junho, voltou a ser desfalque por sentir dores no mesmo local. No fim de agosto, deixou o Tricolor por duas partidas devido a um trauma no tornozelo.

É o sexto jogador são-paulino a desfalcar o elenco do técnico Rogério Ceni por contusão. Além dele, estão em recuperação Moreira (cirurgia no lesão no menisco do joelho direito), Nikão (avulsão no adutor esquerdo), Arboleda (cirurgia no tornozelo esquerdo), Caio (cirurgia no joelho direito) e André Anderson (dores musculares).

Com o fechamento da janela de transferências nos principais mercados do futebol mundial, o Santos se aproximou dos R$ 70 milhões em receita na temporada e chegou perto da meta prevista no orçamento para 2022, que era de uma arrecadação de R$ 76 milhões em transferências.

O Peixe negociou quatro jogadores na temporada, sendo que a principal venda foi a do zagueiro Kaiky para o Almería, da Espanha, por R$ 37,5 milhões. Além dele, o clube vendeu Marinho para o Flamengo, Léo Baptistão, também para o Almería, e Bruninha, para o Gotham FC, dos Estados Unidos.

O Santos lucrou também mais de R$ 10 milhões por bônus de negociações feitas em outros anos, com as vendas de Kaio Jorge e Luan Peres. Em relação ao mecanismo de solidariedade o Peixe lucrou cerca de R$ 5 milhões, sendo a maior fatia pela transferência de Emerson Palmieri para o West Ham.

A negociação de Alan Patrick ao Internacional (400 mil Euros além de perdão de dívida de 1,5 milhão de Euros) também deve render um valor ao Peixe, que tinha pouco mais de 1% pelo mecanismo de solidariedade. A venda de Caju ao Aris Limassol, do Chipre, também rendeu frutos para o Santos (cerca de R$ 500 mil).

A receita estimada em todos os negócios chegou a R$ 67,9 milhões.

وودع الأهلي البطولة بالنسخة الحديثة المكونة من 32 فريقًا، بعد احتلال المركز الأخير في المجموعة الأولى، برصيد نقطتين بعد تعادلين وخسارة.

وتأهل من المجموعة الأولى بالميراس البرازيلي وإنتر ميامي الأمريكي، بينما ودع الأهلي رفقة بورتو البرتغالي.

وكتب وسام أبو علي، عبر حسابه على “إنسجرام”: “بطولة نتعلم منها، لقد كانت مليئة باللحظات الصعبة والمُفرحة، بلا شك، سأعود لأتذكرها بفخر واعتزاز عندما يمر الوقت”.

وأتم: “يجب أن نشكر جماهيرنا التي جعلتنا نشعر وكأننا نلعب على أرضنا في كل مباراة، وهو أمر نقدره حقًا ولا يمكن اعتباره أمرًا مسلمًا به، لقد استمتعنا بكل ثانية فيه”.

وسجل وسام أبوعلي هاتريك، ليكون أول هاتريك لفريق إفريقي وعربي في تاريخ البطولة، في شباك بورتو البرتغالي.
