Onus was on the top order – Finch

Aaron Finch, Australia’s captain, admitted that the side’s top order should have taken more responsibility while batting first on a good track against South Africa

Aaron Finch, Australia’s T20 captain, said his side were beaten in all three disciplines of the game by South Africa in their seven-wicket defeat at Adelaide Oval, and said the top order should have taken more responsibility while batting first on a good track.Australia went in with a squad that involved no players who were in the Test series against Pakistan in the UAE that ended on Monday. That will change for the remaining two Twenty20s, with Glenn Maxwell* bolstering the new-look side. The allrounder, who returned from the UAE on Wednesday, will add experience to a middle order that featured two debutants in the first T20.Australia scored just 144 for 6 in their 20 overs after winning the toss and the line-up, with the exception of Shane Watson and James Faulkner, failed to carry on and build an innings.”I think the onus goes on top of the order, myself and Cam, and I got out, which was disappointing,” Finch said. “That didn’t allow our middle order to play how we know they can. They had to hold back a little bit and their spinners bowled well. When you’ve got two guys coming in at No. 4 and 5 on debut, in a pressure situation, I think they summed up the conditions pretty well. I thought the way Jimmy Faulkner finished off the innings as well was pretty terrific.”According to Finch, the top-order stutter also affected Watson’s innings because the allrounder did not have adequate support through the middle overs. Watson, playing his first international game since April this year, top-scored with 47 and his 57-run stand with James Faulkner helped steady Australia, but his departure in the 18th over allowed South Africa to control the last few overs.”For a guy coming back for the second or third hit after quite a long layoff, I thought he was outstanding,” Finch said. “He hit the ball in the middle of the bat, played the way we know how he can play, took the game on. We’ve seen in this format of the game, and one-day cricket and Test cricket at times, he’s just so dangerous and so damaging. It was just unlucky we didn’t have somebody through that middle path who could really go with him and take it to the opposition. He sort of, had to keep waiting and waiting for the right time. That was unfortunate, but I thought he played beautifully.”Finch also defended his decision to hold Pat Cummins and Kane Richardson back by giving them one over each in the first half of the game, while opting to bowl three of Doug Bollinger’s overs upfront. Bollinger dismissed debutant Reeza Hendricks in the first over of the match and almost had the wicket of Rilee Rossouw in the next one. However, Rossouw made the most of the dropped chance and smacked 14 runs off Bollinger’s third over, helping South Africa bounce back quickly.”I don’t think so. I reckon when you’ve only got 140 on the board, you have to keep experimenting a little bit,” he said. “I think Dougie bowled exceptionally at the start, he created two chances in the first two overs, so when you’ve got an asset like that, I thought it was the right move to bowl him a third and really press for a wicket but it wasn’t to be.”Looking back, we just didn’t score enough runs. If you get 160 on the board and you get a couple of quiet overs at the start, you can put a lot more pressure on them. All of a sudden the rate goes up to 8.5, 9 really quick. But when you’ve got just 140, it still hovers around that seven mark and you don’t really have to take too many risks.”Australia’s Test squad returned from UAE on Wednesday and with the next games in the series on November 7 and 9, Finch was unsure of whether there would be changes to the side. He admitted, however, that Australia had missed a player like Glenn Maxwell, who could have made a difference as an offspinner given the number of left-hand batsmen in the South African side.”I think there’ll probably be one or two changes. I haven’t spoken to anyone, but I think there are a few quality players on the sidelines as well,” he said. “So we’ll have to look at getting them in, if it’s the right make-up.”If Maxi’s available, I’m not exactly sure of the situation at the moment, but we’ve seen how good he is in the shortest format of the game and he also gives us another option with the ball, with so many left-handers in their side, he was probably the type of player we could have done with tonight – an offspin allrounder, who can pinch an over here and there. I think we had the right side to win the game but we just weren’t good enough. They out-batted us, and I thought their skills with the ball were excellent and they were unbelievable in the field. Just the way they moved around was pretty special to watch from the sidelines.” November 6, 2014: 4.30am GMT This story has been updated with news of Glenn Maxwell being added to Australia’s T20 squad

Injured Mitchell Marsh won't bowl again in Test

Mitchell Marsh will not bowl again in this Test after straining his right hamstring on a searingly hot day that left Australia severely under-resourced at the Gabba

‘We bowled the wrong length’ – Lehmann

Mitchell Marsh will not bowl again in this Test after straining his right hamstring on a searingly hot day that left Australia severely under-resourced at the Gabba. The team physio Alex Kountouris was the busiest man at the ground as Australia’s fast bowlers went down with worrying regularity, with Mitchell Johnson the only one of the four main seamers to get through unscathed.Mitchell Starc left the field during the middle session after struggling with back and rib pain, as well as the Brisbane heat, and debutant Josh Hazlewood battled cramps that forced him from the field shortly before stumps. However, both Starc and Hazlewood are expected to be available to bowl on day two, while Marsh’s injury appears the most serious.”He’s got a mild low-grade hamstring strain on his right leg,” Kountouris said of Marsh. “He’s had surgery on the left leg a year ago and he’s also injured the right one maybe two years ago. This is a mild injury … He’s going to have a scan today and we’ll try to get him on the field tomorrow and hopefully have him batting in some way if that’s useful.”Marsh pulled up gingerly after delivering the final ball of his first over after lunch, and his sixth of the innings, and immediately left the field to be assessed. His history of hamstring issues is a concern. In October, he was ruled out of Australia’s limited-overs games against Pakistan in the UAE after hurting his left hamstring, the same one that required surgery two years earlier. In 2013 he picked up a hamstring injury during the Australia A tour of South Africa in July-August and aggravated it during Champions League training with the Perth Scorchers in September. The previous year he tore his hamstring tendons off the bone while diving to make his ground while batting in a one-day game for Western Australia. On a punishing day at the Gabba, Mitchell Johnson was the only one of Australia’s four main seamers to get through unscathed•Getty Images

Marsh’s injury, which came after he finally claimed his first Test wicket in the morning session, meant a greater bowling workload for the side’s other allrounder Shane Watson. The injury-prone Watson was one of the few fit members of the attack on day one and he had to complete Hazlewood’s 16th over, with the second new ball, just before stumps.Hazlewood had cramped earlier in the day but after some stretches and attention from the physio, completed his over. However, when the problem again arose two balls into a new spell he could not continue. Kountouris said he was confident that Hazlewood would be able to continue bowling after some rest on Wednesday night.”He had cramps all over his body, so it wasn’t just one place,” Kountouris said. “Typically when they cramp they cramp in their calf or their hamstring or something and they tend to get on with it. The difficulty with him is he was cramping everywhere. It was both calves, both hamstrings, groins, hips, he just couldn’t function.”You could see his pace was down when he came back and bowled and he showed some courage to do that because he was really struggling. Every ball he bowled he was cramping up in multiple places. He will recover overnight and we’ll see how he wakes up tomorrow. We expect him to be bowling tomorrow.”The Australians are also hopeful that Starc will be able to bowl on day two after he struggled significantly in the heat. He was often seen clutching his ribs as he walked back to bowl, but Kountouris said his injury was not a side strain.”His back was sore, he’s also getting some rib pain,” he said. “I haven’t had a chance to fully assess that, it is not a side strain and we don’t think it is anything that is going to stop him bowling but we’ll have to look at it tonight. But we think he is going to be able to okay to bowl tomorrow.”According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Brisbane’s top temperate for the day was 35 degrees, but the humidity was also making it hard work for players from both sides. Extra drinks breaks were scheduled, but the attrition rate amongst the Australians surprised even the coach Darren Lehmann, whose previous job was as coach of the Queensland state side based at the Gabba.”I haven’t experienced that as a coach or seen it as a player,” Lehmann said. “It was an eventful day … it would have been nice to have a full contingent out on the park the whole day but that’s what it is sometimes in cricket. Hopefully it doesn’t happen again.”Kountouris said the fact that the Australians had struggled on the first day of a five-day match would make the remaining four days of the Test challenging for them.”Today was a tough day,” Kountouris said. “But there’s been a lot of tough days. Test cricket is brutally hard … The difficulty of today was it was day one. You’d probably cope with this if it was day three or day four. It makes the next four days very, very long. That’s the hard part about it.”One piece of potentially good news for Australia is that Ryan Harris, who missed this Test due to a minor quadriceps strain, has a reasonable chance of playing the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. Harris was commentating for Channel Nine on day one at the Gabba, and Kountouris said he would be assessed later in the match.”Harris is a chance for the next Test,” he said. “He’s got a real low-grade quad strain and we need him to be bowling by the end of this Test match. If he can get to that, we’ll be confident he can play the next game. It’s going to be touch and go but we’re hopeful he’ll play.”

Silk's late blitz hauls Sixers home

They came to farewell Brett Lee, they paused to applaud Michael Hussey and they went home enraptured by a scarcely believable escape from the Sydney Sixers

They came to farewell Brett Lee, they paused to applaud Michael Hussey and they went home enraptured by a scarcely believable escape from the Sydney Sixers. But Sydney’s biggest cricket crowd of the summer, 36,487 in all, was treated most pointedly to a clinic in offspin bowling by Nathan Lyon. Like Lee, Hussey and the Thunder, Lyon has played his last limited-overs match at the SCG this summer. The Sixers had already qualified for an away semi-final against the Adelaide Strikers, and only the most one-sided of victories would have allowed them to earn a home knockout match – the other semi will see the Perth Scorchers host the Melbourne Stars. The Thunder have, however, shown plenty of improvement under the leadership of Hussey and the South African coach Paddy Upton, and they came within an ace of their first ever victory over the Sixers in four editions of the Big Bash League. It was the slippery left-arm fast-medium of Josh Lalor that seemed to have shut out the Sixers. Lalor zipped through Michael Lumb with his very first ball, and followed up with the wickets of Nic Maddinson, Ed Cowan and Ryan Carters to at one point be holding the eye-popping figures of 4 for 2. Jacques Kallis – who made a crisp 56 despite his back seizing up – and Aiden Blizzard provided the twin peaks of the Thunder innings. But an exhibition of late hitting by Jordan Silk, who swung five sixes in his unbeaten 69 from 44 balls, kept the game within the Sixers’ sights. Lalor had conceded six runs from his first three overs, but was unable to conceded fewer than 23 in the last over of the night. Eight were required off two, before Steve O’Keefe edged and swiped two boundaries to keep his side’s record of hometown dominance intact.Even so, Lyon’s display will stick in the memory. Considered surplus to World Cup requirements, he flighted the ball, varied his pace and yet also bowled with considerable thrift. In four overs his only boundary came via a precise Kallis cover drive, the sort of boundary any offspinner worth his salt will not mind giving away now and then. The 2010-11 Big Bash had provided a striking introduction to Lyon’s skills, and this night he provided a beguiling reprise. Each of Kallis, Hussey and Cameron Delport were done in the air by Lyon, skying catches as they sought to strike the kinds of sixes that the national selectors feared Lyon would have conceded during the Cup. One member of the panel, Mark Waugh, referred to Lyon as a “confidence bowler” at the start of his spell. By the end there were plenty of indicators that Lyon’s confidence in his craft has seldom been higher.Lee’s spell showed why now is the right time for him to give the game away. While his pace remains near enough to the quickest around, Lee’s flat trajectory has always been hittable for the best batsmen, and final figures of 4-0-38-0 were the most expensive among the Sixers’ bowlers for the evening.Kallis was beaten by a few good ones from Lee and Doug Bollinger while the ball was still new, but pushed on beyond 50 before a combination of Lyon and his increasingly stiff back brought his end. Blizzard was busy and efficient, his strike rate of over 140 arriving without the need to lift a single ball beyond the boundary.Together their efforts were enough to post a tally that seemed beyond the Sixers, before Silk hit out brightly at the finish. Silk’s late burst of hitting showed further evidence of the all-round skill he also exhibited with a brilliant running, diving effort to catch Chris Green. Thanks largely to him, the night would end with the Sixers victorious, and Lyon headed for his old stomping grounds of Adelaide and, perhaps, Canberra.

PCB asks for Hafeez action to be reassessed

Will Mohammad Hafeez be able to contribute with more than just bat at the World Cup?•AFP

The PCB has asked the ICC to set a date for offspin-bowling allrounder Mohammad Hafeez to have his action officially reassessed. The test has been set for February 6 in Brisbane*, with the PCB hoping to have Hafeez cleared to bowl in time for the World Cup that begins on February 14.While Hafeez is part of Pakistan’s World Cup squad, he will not be allowed to bowl in the tournament unless cleared, having been suspended from bowling in international cricket in December. Pakistan are already without the services of Saeed Ajmal for the World Cup, who has also been banned.Hafeez’s action was tested at an ICC accredited centre in Loughborough, England. The analysis, an ICC statement said, found the flex in his action to exceed the 15-degree limit for all deliveries. Later, he was sent to Chennai to undergo remedial work and unofficial tests on his bowling action at Sri Ramachandra University. He had failed one of those unofficial tests, in January; he bowled 11 deliveries in that test, and of those the flex in six deliveries was above the 15-degree limit. If he fails the official test, the ICC’s Bowling Review Group (BRG) will specify a period during which Hafeez will not be entitled to approach the ICC for reassessment.Hafeez was first reported while playing for Lahore Lions during the Champions League T20 in September, but that sanction did not apply to international cricket. He was reported again after the first Test against New Zealand in Abu Dhabi in November.Ajmal, who is not part of the World Cup squad, will undergo official ICC testing in Chennai on January 24.* January 23, 2015 11:15 GMT: The story has been updated with the date of Hafeez’s test
