Glamorgan will begin next year’s Royal London Cup competition with a two-point deduction after the pitch at Cardiff for Friday’s match against Durham was rated ‘poor’ by the ECB. Glamorgan lost the match after being bowled out for 133 chasing Durham’s 185.The ECB’s pitch panel upheld the umpires’ initial assessment that the pitch was below the required standard. Hugh Morris, the Glamorgan chief executive, said the pitch had been newly laid as part of efforts to produce surfaces with greater life in them at the Swalec Stadium.”Whilst we accept the verdict, the Pitch Panel’s review confirmed that there was nothing to indicate in advance that the pitch would behave as it did,” Morris said.”There is no suggestion of an intention to produce a favourable playing surface for the home side. Indeed there was no way our groundstaff could have predicted the resulting outcome.”In 2011, the club began a pitch improvement programme with two new pitches being relaid each winter from 2011 to 2014. This investment was taken after years of umpire reports that the wickets were often low and slow in Cardiff. The feedback we have received from the ECB, umpire reports and visiting teams, both domestic and international, for the newly laid surfaces has been positive, including during last year’s ICC Champions Trophy.”

Angus Robson recorded a maiden first-class century but bottom-placed Leicestershire failed to make the best of his 115 as promotion-chasing Hampshire fought back on the opening day of their LV= Championship Division Two tussle.After captain Josh Cobb decided to bat first at the Ageas Bowl, Leicestershire reached 301 for 9 from 97 overs at the close, a respectable score on a wicket taking turn but one which could have been more substantial.From 249 for 4, built around important stands that 22-year-old Robson shared for the third and fourth wickets with Cobb and Niall O’Brien, Leicestershire lost five wickets in the last session.The collapse looked to hand the initiative back to the second-placed home side who are bidding for their sixth championship win of the season and promotion.Cobb must have wondered if he had made the right choice as Greg Smith departed in the sixth over and Ned Eckersley in the 10th, both to Matt Coles.And when Dan Redfern was taken smartly in the slips by Sean Ervine off Chris Wood, Leicestershire were on a precarious 58 for 3.But then Cobb joined Robson, and in 44 overs Leicestershire’s fourth-wicket pair put together the best partnership of the innings, worth 116 precious runs as Hampshire failed to exploit their first-session superiority.Cobb hit eight fours in his 52 before left-arm spinner Danny Briggs found a way through his defences with the team score on 174.There was little respite for Hampshire though as O’Brien joined Robson in another important stand, this time adding 75 for the fifth wicket.Spinner Liam Dawson precipitated the late Leicestershire slump when O’Brien edged him to Ervine at slip for 44, and from a position of authority the visiting team fell away after tea, at one point losing 5 wickets for 28 in 13 overs.Rob Taylor was stumped by Adam Wheater in Dawson’s next over, before Robson’s vigil, spread over five hours and 17 minutes, came to an end when James Tomlinson at last found the edge.Robson, whose previous best score was 92, hit 17 fours and faced 265 balls but the shame from Leicestershire’s viewpoint was that his team were unable to sustain the progress he had made over the 88 overs he had spent at the crease.Jigar Naik became Coles’ third victim, pinned leg before, and Tomlinson accepted a return catch from Alex Wyatt to leave Leicestershire on 277 for 9.It was a situation improved only by an unbeaten last-wicket stand of 24 between Charlie Shreck and Atif Sheikh, making his Leicestershire first-class debut.Coles finished as the most successful bowler in terms of wickets, although his 3 for 106 came off only 19 overs, while spinners Dawson and Briggs took three of the wickets, Briggs a picture of accuracy in conceding only 19 runs from 16 overs.Robson – brother of England batsman Sam – said of his landmark innings: “It was a great day for me. I am thrilled to get my first century. Hampshire bowled well all day and they made us work for our runs. We had to rein in ourselves in terms of shot selection. There were periods when I was stuck for runs so patience was the key. When I got into the nineties I tried to relax. It was good to have Niall out there keeping me calm.”Hampshire captain Jimmy Adams said: “It was a shared day. If we can knock over the last pair early tomorrow we would have the edge. Five wickets after tea was perfect for us and took away the advantage they had at 249 for 4. If we had taken one or two chances we might have limited them to 250.”

The character, the skill, the determination: all the attributes that good teams need, I think we’ve shown this week.”This is a special moment. I’ve been in the game a long time. It’s a big moment for me to be part of a championship-winning team. I’ve been close a couple of times, and I’ve been involved with others in developing teams. But to finally finish it off today is certainly the highlight of my cricketing career.”Clearly, playing for England is a fantastic feeling and achievement. But yes, I think I do put this above it. I think the background to this, the hard work that goes into it and everything that’s involved in winning a championship – for me at the moment, it feels the best thing for sure.”I don’t want us to be just one-hit wonders. I hope we have got a squad now that is something we can build on for the future. England selections might have a hand in that, but the bottom line is to try to have a squad that is capable of challenging for trophies for a period of time.”We’re proud of our development process. People working in the age-group cricket and schools cricket have to take a lot of credit, because that’s where it starts. Without that raw material, we can’t have days like today. You look around at the core of the team and you have Adam Lyth at 26, Alex Lees at 21, Gary Ballance is 24, Joe Root is 23, I’m 25 and Adil Rashid is 26. It’s unbelievable.”But I’m gutted for Andrew Gale not being able to be on the pitch with us at those final moments. He has been such a crucial part in what’s been a fantastic season for Yorkshire. To drop himself at the start of the season at Middlesex shows the integrity of the bloke and shows how much the county means to him. He’s a very proud man and for him not to be on the pitch with us was desperately disappointing.”Jason Gillespie (first team coach)”I’m proud as punch of the lads. As a coaching staff, we know what’s gone in to get to this point: all the hill running in early December, the early starts, the hard graft working on their specific skills. We’ve seen how hard they’ve worked, that’s why we’re so delighted.”When I got there [to the club], we’d been relegated from Division One and I had a pretty simple job spec: get back to Division One as quickly as possible. We have a captain that backs his players publicly and privately and the way he interacts with his players behind closed doors is a testament to his abilities as a skipper. I loved my time as a player and I was fortunate to be part of a successful side and won a Sheffield Shield, which was fantastic. Now going into coaching and winning a Championship with Yorkshire where I played is very special. It’s a dream come true.”We’re in this sport because we genuinely love it. I love my job. To see these lads to do what they’re doing and celebrate the way they are, it makes me so happy. My daughter was born in Yorkshire, my son is getting the accent, so I’m stuck. It’s credit to Galey that the way he has captained the side made it very easy for me this week. He was very good in the way he didn’t try to captain from the boundary. But he’s been very good at offering advice. He is a great club captain.”It’s massive. For a big club like us not to have won anything for such a long period of time is obviously very frustrating. To be fair I think the lads deserved it they have played exceptionally well all year in all departments.”I think 10 out of the 11 guys today are Yorkshire born players. Again that is credit to our academy. Hopefully that continues, we’ve got some great young players coming into the squad. That’s something we pride ourselves on.”

USA opening batsman Sushil Nadkarni has secured the necessary visa to travel to Malaysia and join the USA squad for ICC WCL Division Three. However, he is unlikely to be available for USA’s opening match of the tournament on Thursday against Bermuda.According to a USACA source, Nadkarni received his passport back from the Malaysian Embassy in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday and boarded a flight later in the day from Houston, Texas to begin the journey to Malaysia. He is not expected to land in Kuala Lumpur until Thursday morning.It means USA will need to find an alternative to join Steven Taylor at the top of the order for the curtain-raiser against Bermuda. USA lost to Bermuda by five wickets in the final match of the round-robin phase for the previous WCL Division Three tournament last year in Bermuda, a game which Nadkarni missed due to injury. It was USA’s first loss to Bermuda in ICC tournament play since 2005.
