Tottenham must land Gianluca Scamacca

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte is closing in on his first transfer window at the club and will have the opportunity to make his own signings to bolster his squad.

Spurs are seventh in the Premier League as it stands, winning eight and losing five of their 15 league matches to date.

The Italian head coach may want to make some additions to the side to aid their attempts to sneak into the top four and secure Champions League football for next season.

Key issue

One area in which he must strengthen is the number nine position. Scoring goals has been a key issue for the club this term and Harry Kane’s lack of form has highlighted Tottenham’s overreliance on him for putting the ball in the back of the net.

They have only scored 18 goals in the top-flight and Kane has contributed with two of those. This has caused major problems for Spurs because the England international is the only recognised centre-forward in the entire squad, with winger Heung-Min Son the solitary player with more than two league goals.

It was recently reported that Saussolo forward Gianluca Scamacca is of interest to Spurs as a potential Dusan Vlahovic alternative and Conte must ensure that a deal is done for his fellow countryman. He is a young striker with potential who could come in and offer support and competition to Kane in the Premier League, which could help the academy graduate to find his best form with his place under threat.

Scamacca has made a name for himself in the Serie A with an impressive strike rate over the past 18 months. He scored eight goals in 13 league starts for Genoa in the 2020/21 campaign and has bagged himself five goals in eight starts for Saussolo this term.

This means that he has scored 13 goals in 21 Serie A starts since the start of last season, taking his senior tally to 32 strikes, showing that he has the quality to score goals on a consistent basis at the top level. Therefore, he could arrive at Spurs and provide a much-needed attacking boost to Conte’s squad and solve a key issue in the short-term – their lack of an alternative option to Kane – and that is why the Italian must secure a move for him.

He could also have the potential to be an excellent signing for the future. Ex-Italy U21 coach Luigi Di Biagio previously heaped praise on the young striker, saying:

“He can become a very high-level centre-forward.”

“He has the technique of a 1.75 m tall player and the physicality of a 1.95 m tall player, like him. And then he is complete: right foot, left, head, he attacks from deep, but also plays on the edge for his teammates.”

At the age of 22, the beast has plenty of time left ahead of him to develop and Conte could look to mould him into the perfect striker for his system.

He has already shown that he has the maturity in his game to be a regular goalscorer, albeit he will need to show he can adapt to English football, and his age and pedigree suggest that he could grow into a top player in the years to come.

Butt and Farhat halve large NZ lead

If Pakistan’s batsmen had applied themselves in the first innings the way they did in the second, a draw would have been the most likely result of the Napier Test

If Pakistan’s batsmen had applied themselves in the first innings the way they did in the second, a draw would have been the most likely result of the Napier Test. As it stands now, Pakistan are still trailing by 120 runs with two days remaining, though a determined performance from their openers cut the first-innings deficit by more than half. And don’t shake your head in disbelief when you look at the scorecard. Daryl Tuffey, whose previous best was 35, nearly reached his maiden Test hundred as New Zealand gained control of the decider. However, their vice-like grip on the contest – they led by 248 runs when the innings ended after lunch – had loosened at stumps with Salman Butt and Imran Farhat reaching half-centuries during a 128-run association. The second and third sessions made for fascinating watching. New Zealand’s rudimentary plan A appeared to be heavily influenced by Pakistan’s terrible first-innings effort. They bowled outside off stump to the left-hand openers, who normally are crease-bound, hoping they would reach out and commit mistakes. To Butt, who tends to fall over on his front foot, they occasionally brought the ball back in to try force an lbw, and for Farhat they had a short mid-off in place and waited for the airy drive.Plan A didn’t work, though, for the openers were determined not to chase anything they didn’t have to and also because there was not much help from the pitch. Slowly, the batsmen began to play square and cover drives and New Zealand started to bowl with more imagination in the second session. The seamers attacked the stumps more, slipped in the odd delivery outside off and Vettori as usual was on target. However, Butt and Farhat continued to be patient and reaped the benefits. Both batsmen stayed adjacent to the line of the ball and generally favoured the off side more with their drives, bottom-hand punches and cuts. The disciplined effort was in stark contrast to the extravagance in the first innings but they might have learnt hard lessons from watching Vettori and Tuffey thrive when New Zealand batted.Imran Farhat followed up his first-innings century with a fifty in the second•Getty Images

Tuffey’s innings showed how good the Napier pitch was for batting. It also said much about Pakistan’s listless bowling display and highlighted the mess they dragged themselves into due to a poor first-innings performance. As you would expect from a third-day track, Danish Kaneria found some spin and completed his five-for but the morning belonged to Vettori and Tuffey.Vettori cruised along, using his bottom hand to flash length deliveries through cover and carve short-of-a-length balls through cover point, and continued to improvise without much risk. Like he did so effectively last evening, Vettori teased Pakistan with his calculated shuffles. He moved towards off to flick to square-leg and would create more room for his cuts by arching back. Pakistan didn’t have anyone with pace to hurry Vettori into making mistakes and it took a stunning fielding effort to dismiss him. Vettori drove one well to the left of short extra cover where Umar Akmal flung himself to hold on to the catch.Tuffey had a few problems against Kaneria – he was dropped, on 32, by Umar Gul at long-leg off an attempted sweep and survived couple of appeals for lbw – but he was solid against the fast bowlers. He handled the short ball without problems and cut at every opportunity. He brought up the fifty partnership with Vettori and his half-century with cut shots, and dispatched Kaneria over long-on. Tuffey’s best, though, was an on drive that bisected long-on and long-off. He leaned forward to a flighted legbreak, took his front leg out of the way and drove through the line, past the startled bowler. It was a shot that a top-order batsman would have been proud of, and it not only reflected his confidence but also said much about Pakistan’s state of mind. By the day’s close, however, Pakistan’s openers had redressed the imbalance and left it open to several results.

O Vasco deve jogar domingo com Martin Silva, Madson, Breno, Anderson Martins e Henrique; Jean e Wellington; Mateus Vital, Nenê e Paulinho; Andrés Rios (Luis Fabiano).

O Vasco folga nesta quinta-feira.

Rice was West Ham’s hero v Spurs

After beating holders Manchester City in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup back in October, West Ham couldn’t secure their place in the semi-finals after losing 2-1 against Tottenham Hotspur last night.

An opening goal from Steven Bergwijn put the hosts ahead only for Jarrod Bowen to level things up just a few minutes later.

Unfortunately for David Moyes, it didn’t take long for the north London club to take the lead again, this time through Lucas Moura.

Despite a valiant effort, West Ham couldn’t turn the tide in the second half and ended up being knocked out of the competition.

In terms of what the positives Moyes could take from the game, one player that impressed for the Hammers, arguably more so than Bowen, was midfielder Declan Rice.

With 90 minutes under his belt and a total of 106 touches of the ball, Rice once again showed what a capable midfielder he is for the team.

The England international managed to complete 86 of the 90 passes he attempted with two key passes and six accurate long balls, resulting in an impressive overall passing accuracy percentage of 96%.

In addition to this, Rice also managed to complete all of the seven dribbles he attempted, highlighting how good he is on the ball and how much of a nuisance he was for Spurs, striding forward at each and every opportunity.

The 22-year-old didn’t shirk away from his defensive duties either by making two interceptions and two tackles.

This performance ultimately earned Rice a solid overall match rating of 7.8/10, making him the highest-rated player that made an appearance in the game across both teams according to SofaScore.

Having been praised in the past by Gary Lineker for his “magnificent” performances for West Ham in the past, this display against Spurs is another example of how good the England international can be and why he was Moyes’ hero on the day.

Football.London also picked up on Rice’s solid display by saying that he “was always alert to any danger on the edge of his own box,” as well as saying that he “got things moving going forward too, particularly late on.”

Moving forward, with West Ham now out of the competition, if Rice can keep delivering this sort of performance throughout the remainder of their Premier League campaign, he will give his side a great chance of securing a place in the top four again.

Ponting not keen on Top-End Sheffield Shield games

Ricky Ponting has rejected the idea of playing Sheffield Shield cricket in northern Australia early in the season as a way of fitting an extended Big Bash into the peak summer period

Ricky Ponting has rejected the idea of playing Sheffield Shield cricket in northern Australia early in the season as a way of fitting an extended Big Bash into the peak summer period. Cricket Australia are planning to introduce an eight-team Twenty20 tournament in two years but squeezing it into the existing busy schedule will be a challenge.Jamie Cox, one of Australia’s selectors, this week suggested beginning the Sheffield Shield tournament two months early in August or September, by playing in tropical regions like Darwin or Cairns. However, Ponting has previously voiced his concerns about altering the four-day competition and he wasn’t a fan of Cox’s idea.”There seems to be a lot of talk about ways and means of making the Big Bash bigger and devoting more time to Twenty20,” Ponting told AAP. “If I think about moving [Sheffield Shield] games to the Top End, you’re going to lose something there somewhere.”Those young guys are not going to get the chance to play at the MCG, SCG, those sort of venues, or play at the Gabba early season when the wicket’s green. Those are the things that have made Australian Test players as good as they are because of the way they’ve learned to adapt to different conditions, in the conditions you play Test matches.”Cricket Australia’s problem is that by adding two teams to the Twenty20 tournament they will increase the number of matches from 17 to 31. The current modelling is based around not reducing the amount of Sheffield Shield cricket played, although Cricket Australia have not categorically stated that the first-class competition would definitely remain at ten games per team.”I’m sure they’ll find some way around it,” Ponting said. “I’m not sure what it’s exactly going to be because all the talk is just about making the Big Bash better. I’m supportive of that because it’s been a great tournament this year.”I just don’t want it to interfere with young up and coming Test players to get the right opportunities and experience to play good, hard, solid Sheffield Shield cricket. That’s what’s made all of us guys what we are today, the fact we’ve been brought up in a really hard, tough first-class cricket system and I’d hate to see the day where that’s ever changed or compromised.”

AVFC linked with Wirtz transfer

With recent reports suggesting that Aston Villa’s owners will provide sufficient financial backing for Steven Gerrard to do with as he sees fit to improve his squad at the Midlands club during the January transfer window, it seems as though the former Rangers boss has his eye on one player that could add some quality to his side.

According to a recent club-by-club transfer guide from the Daily Mail, Villa are interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen attacker Florian Wirtz this month.

Since joining Leverkusen’s U19 side back in the 2020 January transfer window, the 18-year-old has gone on to score two goals and provide three assists in four U19 appearances before becoming a fully-fledged member of their senior team.

In 68 senior appearances with the German club, Wirtz has managed to bag 17 times and provide 19 assists along the way, showing just how much of an attacking talent he is.

In 20 appearances across the Bundesliga and Europa League so far this season, the teenager has chipped in with eight strikes and 11 assists, which goes to show how valuable he is to Leverkusen and why it could be difficult to secure a deal for him in January.

Labelled as a player that has the “total package” in terms of his playing ability by Germany head coach Hansi Flick, Wirtz, who is currently valued at £63m according to Transfermarkt, has four senior international appearances under his belt, showing how highly thought of he is at such a young age.

Clearly a talented young player, Wirtz is also supremely versatile, with the teenager having played in a number of different midfield and attacking positions during his short career so far.

Taking all of this into account, Villa’s owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens should definitely explore the possibility of securing a deal for Wirtz this month. It’s a move, given his valuation, that would surely blow the Villa faithful away.

With reports suggesting that Villa could look to move on the likes of Trezeguet, Bertrand Traore and Anwar El Ghazi, if either of those players were to leave Villa Park either this month or during the next summer transfer window, this could pave the way for Wirtz to join Gerrard’s side and potentially make his mark in the Premier League.
