O objetivo agora é o Atlético-PR no sábado.

Liverpool must swoop for Denis Zakaria

What’s better than having one top defensive midfielder in your team? Well, having two of course and that’s what Denis Zakaria can bring to Liverpool.

The Anfield club have been linked with a move for the Switzerland international midfielder, with his current contract at Borussia Monchengladbach set to expire at the end of the season.

While journalist James Pearce says it’s unlikely that anyone joins the club in January, Liverpool could risk losing out on the 25-year-old to clubs such as Bayern Munich or Barcelona if they don’t move before the summer when he is a free agent.

Currently Jurgen Klopp’s preferred midfield trio boasts Fabinho in a holding role with captain Jordan Henderson and Thiago playing slightly ahead, providing energy and passing abilities for the forwards to feed off. They have started each of the last three Premier League games together but with Henderson being 31, this may be the perfect opportunity to bring in a replacement and start to phase him out of the side.

Zakaria has previously spoken about his style of play, saying he appreciates comparisons to the likes of Patrick Vieira and Paul Pogba but others describe him differently. Lothar Matthaus says he reminds him of Toni Kroos, Yann Sommer says he possesses some traits that Zinedine Zidane and Michel Platini had and Marco Rose described him as “complete.”

But much like Gunter Netzer, the descriptions by some as just a “defensive midfielder” are an insult to someone with the skillset of Zakaria.

The midfielder has featured in 12 Bundesliga games so far this season and scored twice, with an assist to boot. Much like Pogba, he excels in a hosts of different areas. He averages 1.3 shots per game, 0.7 key passes, 1.6 dribbles and has a pass completion rate of 89.2% from an average of 50 passes per game.

In comparison to Henderson, who has taken part in 14 Premier League games so far this term, he looks like a very good alternative. The England international averages 0.9 shots, 1.4 key passes and 0.4 dribbles a match. He also boasts a pass completion rate of 86.7% from an average of 65 passes per game.

Defensively, the £24.3m-rated Zakaria is an improvement too, with 1.8 tackles an outing compared to Henderson’s 1.1 and 1.2 interceptions compared to the Liverpool skipper’s 0.5.

With his good energy too, he would form a perfect pairing alongside Fabinho to make Liverpool even harder to beat than they already are while adding some fresh legs to the club’s weakest position on the pitch. In turn, they may well find their very own Pogba too.

South Australia have signed Shahid Afridi for the Twenty20 Big Bash this summer as a replacement for the spinner Ajantha Mendis. The Redbacks had announced the recruitment of Mendis in July but he is now unavailable due to Sri Lanka’s planned tri-series with India and Bangladesh in January.”It is a big opportunity and will help me gear up for next year’s one-day internationals against Australia and then in the World Twenty20 where we have to defend our title,” Afridi told AFP. “I have heard that West Indian Kieron Pollard will also play in the Twenty20 tournament in Australia, so it will be very exciting and I hope that I am able to entertain the Australian crowd.”South Australia’s Big Bash campaign begins on December 29, when Pakistan will be involved in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. However, Afridi has not played Test cricket since 2006 and is not expected to feature in their Test squad, which would leave him free to take part in the majority of the Twenty20 competition. “For the time being I want to concentrate on one-dayers and Twenty20 internationals to improve myself so that we can defend our World Twenty20 title successfully,” Afridi said.”He’s a very dynamic hitter,” Jamie Cox, South Australia’s high performance manager said. “It’s probably more his bowling that we’re really keen on. He’s become a fantastic legspin bowler over the past four or five years, he’s really matured as a bowler. That’s probably the greatest opportunity for us with three home games particularly, to replace a very good world spinner with another one.”Afridi should be a valuable Twenty20 asset for South Australia; he was the player of the tournament at the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 and averages 21.05 with the bat and 15.73 with the ball from his 24 Twenty20 internationals. Other international signings for the Big Bash include Chris Gayle (Western Australia) and Dwayne Bravo (Victoria).Lasith Malinga was to join Tasmania and Victoria had attracted Muttiah Muralitharan but both men are likely to be unavailable for the same reason as Mendis. The West Indies allrounder Kieron Pollard is on New South Wales’ radar and the states have until Christmas Eve to confirm up to two international recruits.

Manoj Tiwary lashes out at team-mates

Manoj Tiwary, the Bengal captain, has lashed out against some of his players, whom he has accused of pursuing “individual goals” and not performing as a unit

Manoj Tiwary has asked his players to concentrate on playing as a unit instead of chasing “individual goals”•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Manoj Tiwary, the Bengal captain, has lashed out at some of his players, whom he said were pursuing “individual goals” and not performing as a unit, following his team’s drawn game against Saurashtra in Kolkata. Saurashtra piled up 650 in their first innings and bowled out Bengal for 456 to enforce the follow-on.Reacting to the below-par performance, Tiwary said: “It’s time to bid goodbyeto our reputation and play as a unit now in the present context. Instead of playing for individual goals, our players need to focus on the team goal. There is a room for improvement in that area.”Saurashtra gained three points from the game as a result of their first-innings lead while Bengal had to settle with one. The teams are separated by just one point on the Group B table, with Bengal ahead.Tiwary asserted the need for introspection among the players in the side. “We need to sit together, discuss what is going wrong and rectify our mistakes,” he said. “We have tough two matches ahead (against Uttar Pradesh and Delhi).”Tiwary led a team that included former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who managed just 16 in Bengal’s first innings. When asked if Ganguly will participate in Bengal’s upcoming fixture against UP, Tiwary said: “I don’t know. He is in the best position to answer this.”

Newcastle’s Matt Ritchie was poor vs Liverpool

Newcastle United tasted their second successive defeat in the Premier League as they fell 3-1 to Liverpool at Anfield on Thursday night.

Eddie Howe’s side took the lead thanks to a superb strike from Jonjo Shelvey, before goals from Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold saw the Reds clinch all three points.

One man who’s certainly given the Newcastle boss some food for thought going forward, is Matt Ritchie.

The Scotland international found himself on the bench again before the game – he’s been out of the starting line-up since the clash against Arsenal – but following Jamal Lewis’ injury, was forced to come on very early in the first-half.

While having to deal with the likes of Salah and Alexander-Arnold was always going to be a thankless task, Ritchie just couldn’t get to pace with the game.

As per Sofascore, he made no tackles whatsoever and didn’t win a single duel in the time that he was on the pitch – compare that to the likes of Jacob Murphy and Joelinton who each won eight and nine respectively.

Ritchie also couldn’t get going the other way either, failing to attempt a single cross and actually having fewer touches than even goalkeeper Martin Dubravka too – a sign of just how much he was penned back.

And, Ritchie’s situation is made all the more pressing by the news that Lewis’ injury is said to be a “bad” one according to Howe.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, the Newcastle boss added: “It’s a hamstring injury, which is a surprise with Jamal because he’s obviously so athletic.

“He’s been excellent in terms of his athletic work for us so far, so for that to happen so early in the game, I was surprised.”

With Paul Dummett still not fully fit, and Lewis seemingly set for an extended period out on the side-lines, it appears Newcastle have no choice but to stick with Ritchie in that left-back role for the time being.

It’s another major headache for Howe and one that he would have been desperate to avoid, no doubt hoping to focus his attentions elsewhere.

The January transfer window has already seen them linked with a number of players, including Sven Botman at Lille and a potential new central midfielder too.

But, having Lewis and Dummett out, and Ritchie having to once again play in an unfamiliar role, a new left-back may be something for the Magpies boss to consider.

Ritchie’s performance certainly didn’t show anything like the quality that would suggest he can be a short-term answer, let alone a longer-term one.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have suffered a major injury blow…

Claire Taylor honoured with MBE

England batsman Claire Taylor will be awarded an MBE next year, after she was named in the New Year Honours List. The honour rounds off a successful year for Taylor, who was part of the England side that won both the Women’s World Cup and the Women’s World Twenty20. She was Player of the Tournament at both events and was named Women’s Player of the Year at the ICC Awards in Johannesburg.”Getting cricket-specific awards is great because it’s recognition within cricket,” Taylor, 34, was quoted as saying by the BBC. “But this is recognition in the wider community so this is special but in a completely different way.”Taylor’s international career has spanned ten years and she is currently the fifth-highest run-getter in ODIs and is among only ten batsmen to score over 1000 runs in Tests. She is also the joint record-holder for the most centuries in ODIs, and, in April, became the first woman to be named one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year.Taylor will be unable to represent England in their upcoming tour of India due to work commitments but expects to return to action in May for the World Twenty20, which will be held in the Caribbean. Taylor said she hoped the profile of the women’s game in England would grow further and wanted the sport “to be an accepted sporting path for a girl, and for younger and older women as well”.She added: “The elite players need to keep pushing forward and keep pushing the boundary of the quality of the game that we play and to keep building that respect that there is for the game.”Other countries will get better and it’s not just a matter of throwing money at it, I don’t think that’s the answer at all.”It’s making sure that we play the right competitions and we have the right opportunities to play against international opposition.”Taylor read maths at Oxford, where, in addition to playing cricket, she captained the hockey team. She also represented England’s hockey team at U-17 and U-19 levels.
