Badrinath and Dravid power India Cements

How they were out
S Badrinath played the main hand, and Rahul Dravid his typical one-day knock, to help India Cements to a total their bowlers defended without too much trouble on a slow pitch. In the match reduced to 47 overs a side, Badrinath and Dravid scored half-centuries to recover from a slow start, but BSNL could not recover from a similarly slow start themselves.Badrinath and Dravid came together early, and shared a 127-run stand to set up the big finish, which came through Suresh Kumar’s breezy knock in the slog overs. BSNL’s chase never really got going, with their openers struggling to score quickly off L Balaji and Sudeep Tyagi. It came to life with Uttar Pradesh’s Anshul Kapoor attacking the India Cements spinners, but it faded when Kapoor missed an offbreak from Suresh, after he had scored a valiant first List A half-century.The focus of the day was always going to be Dravid, who was playing his first competitive match since his comeback to India’s ODI scheme of things. Dravid, though, promoted Badrinath to No. 3, but soon joined him as India Cements found themselves at 36 for 2 in 8.3 overs. Joginder Singh, who made his List A debut yesterday, and captain of BSNL, continued with his good form from yesterday, bowling his first seven overs for 14 runs and Abhinav Mukund’s wicket with a slower ball.Badrinath and Dravid, who started off with a boundary each early in their innings, played out the opening spells with due caution. Only three runs came in overs 11, 12 and 13, one of which was a maiden by Joginder. None of them wanted, typically, to hit out. As the Powerplay overs finished they started rotating the strike more often – in fact for 14 overs after their initial boundary hits they hit one four each. By the time the next boundary came, the score had unobtrusively moved along to 107 for 2 in 24 overs. Both opened up then, bringing up their fifties with boundaries, Badrinath lofting over mid-off and Dravid cutting past point. The three spinners at Joginder’s disposal disappointed, and cost BSNL a total of 128 in 22 overs between them. A ray of hope appeared for BSNL when both Dravid and Badrinath fell in quick succession after the batting Powerplay that got India Cements 31 runs. Dravid fell for 63, looking to paddle offspinner Niranjan Behera in the 34th over and losing his leg stump. Badrinath, 75 off 93 then, tried to force the pace, but fell on 90 when he tried to whip Behera in the 40th over. But Suresh, then, provided the final impetus, hitting two massive sixes in his 40-ball 42 as India Cements added 63 after Badrinath’s dismissal, in 7.3 overs.Balaji and Tyagi put in a big effort on the lifeless track, Tyagi starting off with a maiden and Balaji supporting him with tight bowling. When spin was first introduced, BSNL had moved to 60 in 15 overs, during which time Dravid took a smart slip catch to send back Arindam Das, and Biswa Mohapatra ran himself out. But with the introduction of spin, Kapoor, who was 17 off 29, brought urgency into the innings. Six boundaries later, Kapoor brought up his 50 in 71 deliveries, and BSNL had got to 128 for 3 in 27 overs. But with the match set up for a tight finish, Kapoor was done in by a sharp offbreak from Suresh, and his partner in crime, Ankur Kakkar, followed him next ball for a run-a-ball 23. Kakkar was the third batsman to have been run out, all BSNL’s own making. India Cements accepted the gift with glee, and Suresh got Varun Kumar stumped in his next over, leaving BSNL with 118 to get with four wickets in hand. There was another brief spark to come. Joginder, who hit three sixes in his 27 yesterday, slog-swept the second ball he faced for a six. Two more sixes were to follow, and even though he lost NS Negi in the interim, Joginder took BSNL close. When Balaji got him in the 40th over, with 57 still to get, that was that.Read the reports from the other matches of day two of the Corporate Trophy here.

DCL, Gray & Gomes in Everton training

Many Everton fans have been lauding some injury news involving three of their players.

As pictured ahead of their trip to Brentford in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Demarai Gray and Andre Gomes are all now in light training at USM Finch Farm after their respective injury setbacks.

Gray has no doubt been one of the Toffees’ key players so far since signing in the summer, being their joint-top scorer in the top flight with three goals while also making two assists and ranking highly among his teammates in terms of shots (two), key passes (1.4) and dribbles (1.5) per match (WhoScored).

Calvert-Lewin scored three goals in his first three games this season before getting injured (experienced option in the middle of the park.

To have all three back in training is certainly a good sign that they could be back in the team soon.

All-round Johnson condemns England to defeat

Already, two matches into this series, a pattern is developing as Australia claimed a 2-0 lead with 39-run victory at Lord’s

Already, two matches into this series, a pattern is developing as Australia claimed a 2-0 lead with 39-run victory at Lord’s. Once again they were put into bat and managed only a par score as Callum Ferguson top-scored with 55, but then restricted a run-chase that England should have knocked off with ease, especially after reaching 74 without loss. England were guilty of repeating the same mistakes from The Oval as a number of their top-order made starts, but only Paul Collingwood passed fifty as he forlornly tried to hold the chase together. The key performance in many ways, though, was Mitchell Johnson’s late assault with the bat after Australia had slumped to 208 for 8 in the 46th over. They didn’t look like using up their allocation, but Johnson swung powerfully to club 43 from 23 balls and add 41 off the last 4.2 overs with Nathan Hauritz. It should have been negated by the solid start between Andrew Strauss and Ravi Bopara, but four wickets in 32 balls including two in four by Shane Watson, either side of a fly-past by an RAF Lancaster Bomber, derailed England’s chase. And whereas on Friday they managed to get close thanks to the lower-order, this time the chase limped along. While Collingwood, who reached 4000 ODI runs when he had made 14, had Graeme Swann for company in an eighth-wicket stand of 36 there was still a chance, but Swann’s mow across the line off a slower-ball from Nathan Bracken signalled the end. It was another example of an England batsman picking the wrong shot at the wrong time. The asking rate wasn’t out of control with the Powerplay still to come, but by the time Bracken finished a double-wicket maiden, which also included Ryan Sidebottom’s scalp, the game was up and the batting option hadn’t been used.Of further frustration for England – as they lost all ten wickets for 136 – was that they were comfortably ahead of Australia’s comparison well into the final 10 overs. Strauss had been quickest out of the blocks as he showed the adaptability that is now part of his batting and he and Bopara then began to feast on some loose offerings from James Hopes. However, Watson’s introduction changed the game when Bopara walked across his stumps and was struck in front of middle. Watson, who struggled with the ball during his brief spells in the Ashes, celebrated with vigour and was at it again when Prior drove loosely without much footwork.Strauss’s demise came two balls after a fly-past from a Lancaster Bomber that brought the Lord’s crowd to their feet as it flew in over the Nursery Ground, then turned and made a return pass. The event was to commemorate 65 years since Lord’s was handed back after being used as a RAF receiving base in World War Two. The players came onto the balcony to watch, and Strauss was soon rejoining them as he tried to work Hauritz into the leg side and chipped a gentle leading edge back to the bowler.Owais Shah announced his intentions by coming down the pitch and hammering Hauritz over wide mid-off for an authoritative boundary. But the combination of Collingwood and Shah at the crease did suggest some chaos with the running, with one of team’s quickest alongside one of the slowest.Collingwood played the ball to the off side and wanted the single but saw Shah hesitate. That caused Collingwood to stutter and by the time both began running it was far too late, with Shah being the casualty. It adds to the lengthy list of run-outs Shah has been involved in and it is a significant problem. To Collingwood’s credit he refocused well, but couldn’t find anyone to stay with him.Eoin Morgan was pinned lbw by Johnson and Luke Wright, with time to build an innings, wafted at the hostile and accurate Brett Lee before Tim Bresnan fell to a weak cut against Johnson. There are plenty of Australians with points to prove in this series, Lee and Johnson being two of them, and so far that is a major difference.Australia had also stumbled after a solid opening stand, but had enough in the tank to stage a recovery. Bresnan, recalled after Stuart Broad was ruled out with a stiff neck, broke the first-wicket partnership of 62 when Watson drove to cover where Wright held a sharp, mid-air catch. Then it was Wright the bowler who took charge as Tim Paine pulled a short ball to deep midwicket where Morgan, playing as extra batting cover in place of Adil Rashid, steadied himself well under a spiralling catch. Wright, showing the pace he has added this season, then had Michael Clarke caught behind top-edging a pull. The innings was steadied by Ferguson and Cameron White as the pair added 59 before Bopara had White caught behind first-ball.Swann ensured that Australia’s middle order struggled to find momentum when he removed Michael Hussey with one that straightened a fraction, and also trapped Hopes on the sweep. However, Ferguson remained and notched another half-century, to continue a prolific start to his international career, until playing round a straight ball to give James Anderson his first wicket since August 3. England should have aimed to bowl Australia out, but instead they lost some intensity in the closing overs as Johnson freed his arms and those runs proved the difference. There isn’t much between these sides, but at the moment it’s enough.

Thin line between semi-final and semi-decent

Not making it through to the Champions Trophy will be the least ideal way to end a less than ideal period for Australia

Osman Samiuddin in Centurion29-Sep-2009

Michael Clarke’s absence will hurt against Pakistan, despite Australia’s record over them in the last 15 years•Getty Images

It is a sobering thought that should Australia not go through tomorrow, they will have been bounced out of a world event in the first round (the World Twenty20 in England), lost the Ashes and failed to make the Champions Trophy semi-finals in the same year. In its own way, it will bean annus horribilis, though these things are relative and more so in this age of Australian transition, where expectations perhaps are to be recalibrated.Mind you, had things taken their natural course – or unnatural if you like – in Centurion the other night against India, they might not have been in the situation they are now. It isn’t quite must-win, but the Australians aren’t the kind to rely on “peculiar mathematics” (as Kumar Sangakkara sobeautifully put it the other night). A win is what they will want and it is the only permutation they will factor in as they take on a dangerously in-form Pakistan.”We were disappointed with the way things finished off yesterday,” Ricky Ponting said. “I thought we were in a pretty strong position in the game. With only a few wickets down and going into the last 10 overs with 240-odd on the board, you’d post a total around 300 which I thought would be really competitive on that pitch. We’re disappointed that it didn’t finish.”Yet still there was a bit to gain, not least some time in the middle against spin, which may play a part again tomorrow. Centurion hasn’t been kind to all spinners, but Shahid Afridi and Saeed Ajmal used the surface well against India, and they have previous with Australia. “The positivefor us is to spend that much time in the middle against some good spin bowling which we know Pakistan is going to have for us tomorrow as well, so we’ve got some positives coming out. We know now what we have to do, we have to win tomorrow to guarantee ourselves to move on.”It will not be easy. Pakistan might tinker with their combination to account for injuries but they are a side, as much as can be gauged and predicted, in good shape and in possession of that one thing that makes them more dangerous and thrilling still: momentum.Michael Clarke’s absence will hurt and they could do with Shane Watson scoring a few runs at the top, or even in fact, one. His last three innings, Ponting had forgotten (he thought it was two), had fetched him precisely zero.”I’m sure he’s thinking about that at the moment but I haven’t thought much about it,” Ponting reasoned. “It isn’t ideal obviously but Shane has come off a very good last half of the Ashes in England, played really well in the ODI games and he has been in good form. He got a good ball at Durham, a good ball against West Indies and had a couple of good balls in the first over against India. The ODI game can go horrible like that for top order batsmen. He’s working hard and he’s going to an optional training session today. Although he hasn’t scored runs I am confident he will come good.”If previous form had anything to do with it, tomorrow would be a breeze. If there is one team Australia have enjoyed playing over the last 15 years, it is Pakistan. They’ve won 12 of their last 15 encounters and generally, since the 1999 World Cup final, dominated proceedings betweenthe two. “We all know how dangerous they can be and especially of late they’ve been playing some very good cricket,” said Ponting. “If they happen to leave some of the big boys out it’ll make our job a little easier but whatever team they put out it’ll be a tough game.”And what of not making it? “It’ll be disappointing for us if we don’t. We’re in a pretty good position to make it through but it’s all about how you play on the day. You’ve just got to look at South Africa, red hot favourites coming in, and they didn’t perform at their best for two games and are out.”That’s the nature of the tournament and there is no room or margin for error, especially if you have a game affected by rain. It puts us behind the eight-ball a little bit more but our destiny is in our own hands and we know what we have to do: play well tomorrow. If we don’t, it’s just because we haven’t played well on the day.”That has happened more often this year than in recent years and though Ponting was upbeat and confident – as winning captains are – not making it through tomorrow will be the least ideal way to end a less than ideal period.

Everton close in on Arsen Zakharyan

Everton are reportedly closing in on the signature of Dynamo Moscow midfielder Arsen Zakharyan, with Rafael Benitez keen to add further reinforcements to his first team squad.

What’s the story?

According to Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb (as relayed by the Liverpool ECHO), the Toffees are ‘pressing hard’ to secure the signature of the highly-rated 18-year-old.

The report added that there is an ongoing ‘strong attempt’ from the Merseysiders to strike a deal with the Russian club, and contact is said to be ‘proceeding quickly’. Dynamo are set to demand €10m (£8.4m) for their prized asset, so a January move for Zakharyan could be on the cards for Everton.

Everton could secure Benitez’s next Hamsik

If Toffees director of football Marcel Brands is able to lure Zakharyan to Goodison Park over the coming months, he could secure Benitez his next Marek Hamsik. The Slovakian playmaker prospered under the Spaniard’s tutelage during their time together at Napoli, with 45 goal contributions in 95 appearances, and the Spaniard and Russian could strike up a formidable partnership on Merseyside.

After making his first team debut for Dynamo back in 2020, Zakharyan has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting talents to come out of Russia in recent years. In just 13 Premier Liga appearances last season, the creative talent scored three goals and provided a further five assists, earning a call up to his national team’s senior setup before going on to feature in four World Cup qualifiers.

The youngster was described as having “exciting potential” by journalist Ben Bocsak after putting in a string of standout displays for his hometown club, and Zakharyan has taken his game to new heights this term.

In just 15 appearances for Dynamo throughout 2021/22, the teenager has already notched up three goals and a whopping seven assists, playing a crucial role in their rise to second place in the top-flight table.

With James Rodriguez’s late departure for Qatari club Al-Rayyan leaving a creative void in the final third of the pitch for Everton, Zakharyan could be the ideal solution to their attacking woes, and everyone associated with the Blues will surely be eagerly anticipating the 18-year-old’s potential arrival at Goodison Park.
