A fresh update has emerged on Rangers manager Steven Gerrard, regarding Newcastle’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to The Sun, the Rangers head coach is on a three-man shortlist Newcastle have prepared to replace Steve Bruce at St. James’ Park.

The report claims that Bruce is set for the chop and PIF, who have completed their takeover from Mike Ashley, are eyeing three managers to replace him.

Brighton’s Graham Potter and Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers join Gerrard on the list, with German Ralf Rangnick also being eyed for a sporting director position.

Concern

This update on Gerrard will surely leave Rangers fans feeling concerned about the situation. Newcastle’s takeover has seen them linked to players like Raheem Sterling, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Philippe Coutinho and Mauro Icardi, with that level of spending power potentially an attractive prospect for managers being approached for the job.

Gers supporters will be particularly worried as this fresh development follows on from a report earlier this month claiming that Gerrard is ‘intrigued’ by the Magpies’ head coach position. The ex-Liverpool man has been put on alert by PIF’s takeover and has shown an interest in learning more about their plans, with this latest update now revealing that the interest is mutual.

Rangers fans would be devastated if Gerrard departed for Tyneside as he has been brilliant for the club. In 185 matches to date, he has won 2.15 points per game and won the Scottish Premiership title in style last season as they went unbeaten and achieved 102 points. This shows that he has been able to build a winning squad, as the Gers sealed their first domestic crown since 2010/11.

He helped to end Celtic’s dominance of Scottish football and is now on course to retain the crown as Rangers sit top of the Premiership after eight games, with six wins, one draw and one defeat.

Gers fans would not want to see their leader leave before the end of the season as it could potentially derail their title challenge and allow the Hoops to reclaim the title.

This is why supporters will be concerned that Newcastle have now narrowed down their search to three names, with Gerrard being one of them. Hopefully, from a Rangers perspective, they go with Potter at Brighton or Rodgers at Leicester and the Gers will be able to watch the Liverpool legend lift another trophy next summer at Ibrox.

Plenty has been written and said about John Buchanan’s radical multiple captain theory, but Brendon McCullum’s subsequent appointment as captain put to rest all the speculation. Sourav Ganguly said he was ‘okay’ with that decision, but he, and the other key players in the team, will need to play significant roles if Kolkata are to finish higher than last year’s sixth place. In Chris Gayle and McCullum, they have potentially one of the most explosive opening combinations in the tournament, while Ishant Sharma and Ajantha Mendis could be quite a handful with the ball. First, though, they need to keep out the extraneous factors and concentrate on the cricket.The Deccan Chargers haven’t been in the news much, but after their disastrous season last year, they’ve probably decided that a low-key pre-tournament approach would serve them better. وقال ميلنر في تصريحات لموقع ناديه الرسمي: “أعتقد أن نونيز سيكون له تأثير قوي خلال مسيرته مع ليفربول”.

وأضاف: “مُنذ أن انضم إلى الفريق عمل داروين بجد، فهو يقاتل على الكرة، إذا مررت الكرة إليه سيفعل كل ما في وسعه للوصول إليها، فهو مهاجم مختلف عن باقي اللاعبين الآخرين الذين نملكهم”.

The report claims Bruce will remain in charge until a replacement is found, with the club seemingly narrowing their search down to these three names.

Excitement

This update from The Times will surely leave Newcastle fans feeling excited as all three of the leading candidates have their merits and could potentially be superb appointments by PIF. They are all currently excelling in their current roles, with the Magpies poaching an actively successful coach instead of picking up one who has recently been sacked.

Firstly, Martinez has had an impressive spell in charge of Belgium. He led them to third in the 2018 World Cup and fourth in the 2020 (2021) European Championships, whilst he also has over 200 Premier League games under his belt as manager of Wigan and Everton.

Gerrard, meanwhile, won the Scottish Premiership with Rangers last season. He has averaged 2.15 points per game across 186 matches in charge of the Glasgow giants, showing that he knows how to pick up points on a regular basis and would bring a winning mentality with him to St. James’ Park.

Finally, Emery has a sublime C.V. Although he endured a difficult spell with Arsenal, he has proven his quality elsewhere as a manager. During spells with Sevilla and Villarreal, he has won an eye-catching four Europa League titles, beating Manchester United in the final earlier this year to secure his fourth, whilst he also won a Ligue 1 title and two French Cups during his time with PSG.

This shows that he knows how to win trophies and he could bring that trait along with him to Newcastle. This is why Magpies fans will be excited by the news that he, along with Gerrard and Martinez, is among the contenders to replace Bruce.

They are three impressive managers with a recent track record of achieving success and could help to lift Newcastle up the Premier League table. Emery, in particular, could increase their chances of winning silverware with his trophy-laden history as a coach in Spain and France.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested in a deal to bring Vitinha back to Molineux.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Portuguese publication Record (via Birmingham Live), who claimed that Bruno Lage’s side have sent scouts to watch the 21-year-old in action for FC Porto ahead of a potential swoop for the midfielder in January.

The report added that a number of other clubs are also interested in the Portugal under-21 international, with Valencia, Celta Vigo and Real Sociedad all believed to have sent scouts to watch Vitinha this season.

However, Wolves’ previous relationship with the player, in addition to him being a client of Jorge Mendes, is viewed as giving the Premier League side an advantage in the race for his signature.

Shi must move

While Vitinha was only handed five Premier League starts during his loan spell at Wolves last season, with the midfielder going on to make a further 14 appearances from the bench, it is undeniable that the 21-year-old seems a player who boasts a tremendous amount of potential.

Indeed, upon his arrival at the club in September 2020, Jeff Shi stated his belief that: “Vitinha is a crucial signing and an integral component in our recruitment plan for this summer. He is an exciting and special young talent, with an abundance of technique and creativity.”

While Wolves ultimately did not exercise their €20m (£17m) option to purchase the midfielder at the end of last season, Vitinha has already started to prove that this decision was a big mistake on the part of Shi.

Indeed, over his five league appearances this term, the £6.3m-rated man has taken 2.4 shots, made 2.2 key passes, 1.8 interceptions and 1.2 tackles and won 5.6 duels per game.

These returns have seen the 21-year-old, who has drawn strong comparisons to Joao Moutinho, average a SofaScore match rating of 7.78, ranking him not only as Sergio Conceicao’s top performer in the league but also as the best player in the entire Portuguese top flight.

Wolves have been rather lacking in creativity from midfield so far this season, with Ruben Neves’ 1.4 key passes being the most of Lage’s midfielders. With the 45-year-old only having four options to call upon in the middle of the park, a move for the €40k-per-week (£34k-per-week) Vitinha this January would appear to be a very wise move for Shi indeed.
