A round-up of the third day of the eighth round Quaid-e-Azam Trophy matches
Cricinfo staff09-Feb-2009Group APakistan International Airlines declared their innings first thing in the morning, and by stumps at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground were five wickets away from victory. Mohammad Saad (41) and Abid Ali (71 not out) offered resistance but Lahore are up against it going into the final day.Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited failed to really go for the jugular, but still held the upper hand over Habib Bank Limited on day three at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Trailing by 300 when they resumed in the first session, HBL lost Rehan Rafiq (56) and Ahmed Shehzad (40) early and proceeded to slip from 100 for 1 to 130 for 5. Kamran Hussain (50) and Abdur Rehman (79 not out) combined to limit the damage and HBL took stumps on 307 for 8, still behind by 103. Imran Ali was the most successful bowler for SNGPL with 4 for 80.Karachi Whites finished day three at the National Bank Sports Complex in Karachi on top. They did well by restricting Khan Research Laboratories’ lead to 85, and then batted solidly to go past that by 125 runs. The debutant Khalid Mahmood’s six wickets helped Karachi White takes KRL’s last five wickets for 71; he struck twice with the score 271 and once down the order to jar the tail. Yasir Arafat picked up an early wicket but couldn’t prevent Ali Asad (65), Asad Shafiq (84 not out) or Khalid Latif (43 not out) from taking Karachi Whites into the lead. At 210 for 1, Karachi Whites are in charge.A low-scoring encounters appears set to go Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited’s way on the final day in Muridke. From 154 for 6, ZTBL inched to an eventual 229, with Sui Southern Gas Corporation’s Sohail Khan taking six wickets. Then Iftikhar Anjum, whose unbeaten 24 had helped ZTBL advance their lead, struck three blows with the ball. He dismissed Asif Zakir and Adnan Malik as SSGC slipped 17 for 2, and then returned to get the captain Saeed Bin Nasir. SSCG slumped to 89 for 5 in pursuit of a target of 221.Group BIslamabad duly crushed Quetta by an innings and 415 runs at the Diamond Club Ground. The home side needed just four wickets to wrap up that monstrous victory, and took them in just 41 deliveries. Saad Altaf helped himself to a couple to finish with 6 for 29 and ten for the match. With 39 wickets, Altaf stands at No. 3 in the season’s tally.Abbottabad have a tough last day’s work ahead of them in Sheikhupura. They first allowed Sialkot to take a 142-run lead – even though they took the last five wickets for 71 – and then lost four wickets to finish the day just 15 runs ahead. In their second innings, Abottabad were given a 68-run stand between Hammad Ali and Ghulam Mohammad, but once the latter was dismissed for 40 the middle order struggled. Hammad remained unbeaten on 69 at the close, with the score 157 for 4. Table-toppers Sialkot will back themselves to win this one.Junaid Zia completed a five-wicket haul to give Lahore Ravi a slim lead and his side’s openers responded with an unbeaten partnership of 116 to extend the lead over Peshawar to 130 at the Arbab Niaz Stadium. Zia, who hasn’t had the best of seasons, picked up his first five-for of the tournament and took his tally to 20 in his seventh match. Lahore Ravi would have had a better lead if not for a sloppy 36 extras. Kashif Siddiq (54 not out) and Mohammad Sohail (58) scored their runs at a good clip to ensure Lahore Ravi didn’t stumble before stumps.Zahoor Khan’s seven wickets in the match have give Faisalabad a good shot a win over Karachi Blues in Sargodha. Zahoor struck first thing in the morning to cut short Shahzaid Hassan on 63 from 61 balls before striking telling blows. From 111 for 3 Karachi Blues were bowled out for 158, Zahoor taking 5 for 31, and forced to follow-on. Zahoor then prised out two wickets in the second innings as Karachi Blues finished the day 150 for 4. They still trail by 80.The match between Rawalpindi and Hyderabad at the Niaz Stadium is headed only one way – for a draw. Hyderabad came out on day three 70 for 1, and finished 293 for 5. Their middle order was kept under wraps but the 18-year-old opener Azeem Ghumon batted all day to record his fourth first-class century in his 11th game. Ghumon occupied the crease all day at strike-rate of just over 50.00, and has so far hung on for 482 minutes. Hyderabad still trail Rawalpindi by 188 but there is not enough time to force a result.
Celtic midfielder James McCarthy is ‘available’ for selection for Ange Postecoglou against Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday evening, Alison Conroy reports.
The Lowdown: McCarthy’s knock
The Irishman has worked his way into Postecoglou’s plans and has started the last three games in all competitions.
However, McCarthy, who was described as ‘quite incredible’ by his then-Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson last year, was forced off with a knock on Sunday in the 1-1 draw against Dundee United.
The 30-year-old seems to have recovered, though, providing Postecoglou with an injury boost ahead of the Europa League Group G clash tonight.

The Latest: Conroy’s tweet
Reliable reporter Conroy took to Twitter on Wednesday to share comments from Postecoglou on injuries.
The Hoops manager admitted that right-back Josip Juranovic is set to be sidelined for a few weeks and provided updates on Kyogo Furuhashi and Callum McGregor.
Conroy’s post ended with four words on McCarthy, who is ready to go against the Bundesliga side:
“Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou says Josip Juranovic will be out for “a couple of weeks” with a hamstring injury. McGregor & Kyogo trained today but won’t be available for tomorrow’s game v Leverkusen. James McCarthy is available.”
The Verdict: Good news
Captain McGregor has missed the last four Celtic games and it seems as if he won’t be ready from the off again, so having McCarthy available in midfield is good news.
He has plenty of experience at the top level with 42 caps for the Republic of Ireland and 272 Premier League appearances, and although he has reportedly struggled in training, he appears to be growing on Postecoglou, who has trusted him with a start in Celtic’s last three matches.
Hopefully McCarthy will impress at Parkhead, which could then give Postecoglou another selection headache when McGregor is 100%, but this time a positive one for the manager.

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has been tipped to pursue a deal for a new Hoops midfielder from one of the club’s Premiership rivals…
What’s the talk?
The Herald journalist James Cairney has urged Celtic to make a move for St Mirren midfielder Jamie McGrath in the January transfer window.
His contract at St Mirren expires at the end of the season and Cairney believes that the Hoops could benefit from snapping him up on a cut-price deal in the winter market to improve their options in the middle of the park.
Armstrong 2.0
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou could land Stuart Armstrong 2.0 by completing a deal to sign McGrath in the January window.
Mo Elyounoussi was the only midfielder or wide player to hit double figures for goals in the Premiership for Celtic last term, with David Turnbull’s eight the next most by a player from those positions.
Coincidently, Elyounoussi has now returned to Southampton to play alongside another player who knows a thing or two about scoring goals for Celtic – Armstrong. In his last two seasons in Scotland, Armstrong produced 22 goals and 13 assists in all competitions for the Hoops, including 18 goals in the league, and was then sold to the Saints in 2018 for £7.16m.
McGrath showed last season for St Mirren that he has the quality to come in and be Celtic’s next goalscoring attacking midfielder, just like Armstrong was during his time at the club. He scored 17 goals and provided six assists in all competitions last term, including ten goals in the Premiership.
St Mirren boss Jim Goodwin previously lauded the player and claimed that his bravery in possession of the ball is second to none, saying:
“He had been pigeonholed as a No 10 at Dundalk and people looked at him as a luxury player, but I had a very good conversation with Jamie and his representatives and explained that I saw there was more to him than that.
“My belief was that he could become a No 8 and be a box-to-box player and I think he’s shown he can do that.
“He’s not one to fly into tackles, but he gets close to opponents, he’s fit, he’s quick and his composure on the ball is incredible. His creativity and bravery when in possession is second to none.”
This highlights the level of quality he could bring to Postecoglou’s side and why they should act upon Cairney’s advice and make a swoop for him in January. The Australian head coach could unearth the next goalscoring central midfield sensation, Armstrong 2.0 if you will, by snapping McGrath up from St Mirren.
AND in other news, Ange must ruthlessly axe 26 y/o dud who left Celtic “livid”, he’s not good enough…

Between them Yuvraj and Yusuf have bowled 34.4 overs for 190 runs and seven wickets. In 39.1 overs, Oram, Ryder and Elliot have gone for 311 runs and two wickets. There’s only one winner when you compare economy-rates of 5.23 and 7.94

During the third ODI in Christchurch, when New Zealand still had a chance of winning the series, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was forced into a move he had been reluctant to make, especially given the short boundaries. When Munaf Patel began the 45th over, New Zealand needed 71 with two wickets in hand to chase down an improbable 392. The first ball went for a six, the second and fourth were beamers, after which Munaf had to be taken off, forcing Dhoni to turn to Yusuf Pathan for the first time that night. The next four deliveries produced a single, a dot ball, another dot ball, and a wicket. The game had turned. Amid the excitement created by Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, and the rest of India’s batting line-up, a part-timer had provided the small, final turning point of the match. New Zealand would not have spent sleepless nights over that dismissal – Kyle Mills had to go for everything at that point – but they will be concerned that India’s fifth-bowler combine of Yuvraj Singh and Yusuf has outbowled their combination of Jacob Oram, Grant Elliot and Jesse Ryder. And irritatingly for New Zealand, it has been an important factor in this series.Between them, Yuvraj and Yusuf have bowled 34.4 overs for 190 runs and seven wickets. In 39.1 overs, Oram, Ryder and Elliot have gone for 311 runs and two wickets. There’s only one winner when you compare economy-rates of 5.23 and 7.94. And India’s part-time spin combination has taken wickets – as many as the whole New Zealand pace attack has.Moments after New Zealand lost the fourth ODI in Hamilton, Daniel Vettori lamented that New Zealand had played out 57 dot balls against the spinners. If they have to beat a strong India, they will need to cover even these finest of details. It could be down to a difference in batting styles. India have not slowed down in the middle overs in this series and have targeted the fifth bowler after giving Vettori due respect. The pitches in New Zealand are on the slower side, and both the Indian part-time spinners have used that to their advantage. Yusuf, who hasn’t been bowled much but boasts proud figures of 9.4-0-37-3 in the series, has shown a clever change of pace. Sometimes he waits an extra second before delivering, slowing down the pace, but he can also spear it in.Of late, Yuvraj has been quite difficult to play for the right-handers. Kevin Pietersen struggled against him both in the one-dayers and the Tests, playing for the spin and getting beaten by ones that go straight on. And Yuvraj compounds the threat by getting the odd delivery to turn square. Dhoni has shown more confidence in Yuvraj the bowler than previous captains have, and he has reaped the benefits. In his last 16 matches, Yuvraj has bowled his quota of 10 overs five times, and has bowled nine-overs in a 47-over match. In this series he may have gone for just over six an over, but he has taken more wickets than Kyle Mills. The New Zealand part-timers are all medium-pacers, who haven’t been effective on friendly batting surfaces. Oram has just come back from injury, is not 100% with the ball, and has been targeted by the Indian batsmen. Ryder got his figures rearranged when India opted for a batting Powerplay in the 23rd over in Christchurch, catching New Zealand by surprise.Another big difference between how the sides have used their part-timers comes from where their specialist spinner is placed. India can afford to start with the part-timers as soon as the bowling Powerplay ends, knowing that Harbhajan Singh can bowl at any time. Vettori is usually forced to bring himself early on after a damaging onslaught from the Indian openers. Oram, Ryder and Elliot, incidentally, went through their worst game when Vettori was not present. There is a marked difference between the quality of the part-time bowlers the teams possess. And India haven’t used either Sehwag or Sachin Tendulkar yet. Given the kind of batting starts India have been getting, tackling part-timers will not be very high on priority lists at the moment. But if New Zealand can get early wickets at the Eden Park, keep an eye on both teams’ middle overs.
