Pundit tells Diop to embrace the arrival of Zouma at West Ham

Former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer has urged Issa Diop to embrace Kurt Zouma’s West Ham arrival and the challenge it has brought with it.

Zouma is likely to be West Ham’s first-choice central defender this season after joining from London rivals Chelsea in a big-money deal.

Diop has not always been a regular under David Moyes, failing to start a single Premier League game this campaign so far, and was linked with a move away from the club during the summer transfer window.

However, the Frenchman remained at the London Stadium and Palmer is now urging him to accept this added challenge his compatriot has brought with his arrival.

“He’s a talented, talented centre-back, isn’t he?” the ex-Leeds United player said to TT. “When they signed him he was a young player; they paid a lot of money for him. Listen, it’s always good to have competition. He’s got to work hard.

“He’s just got to get his head down and work as hard as he can to get back into the team and secure a regular first-team slot – always good to have competition for places because that improves your own performance.”

Diop played a lot in the second half of last season and was not sold during the summer transfer window so is a player still clearly in David Moyes’ plans. Perhaps the arrival of Zouma could help raise his game to the next level as he looks to win and then retain a place in the Hammers’ starting XI.

Nada mudou. Continuamos a ver trabalhando evoluindo.

Luke Ronchi is keen to repay the faith of the Australian selectors after they confirmed he would replace Brad Haddin in the two Twenty20 internationals against South Africa. Haddin is being rested following his busy schedule over the past few months, which has included consecutive Test series against India, New Zealand and South Africa. The decision has opened the door for Ronchi, who impressed with his batting and his excellent glovework in the Twenty20 and ODIs in the West Indies this year when Haddin flew home with a broken finger. However, Ronchi fell into a batting slump with Western Australia this season – he has made only one half-century in any format – and he said it was reassuring to be confirmed as the No. 2 gloveman in the country.”You think about it sometimes,” Ronchi said on Saturday. “Obviously after the West Indies I thought about it a bit and sometimes not performing the way you want to and you doubt yourself. For this to come up is a nice reassuring feeling and puts my mind in a good place.”Haddin is expected to return for the one-day internationals, which begin at the MCG on Friday. For now, he will enjoy a rare few days at home in Sydney with his wife and baby son Zac.”I talked to him about it a little bit, see how he was going,” Ronchi said. “I think more than anything he was quite tired and sore from the Test series. So I don’t think he was overly disappointed not playing because he knew he’d have a little bit of a break and then he’d be into the ODIs.”I don’t think he’s too worried about it. He obviously knows that he’s number one. I’m his backup at the moment and whenever he’s raring to go I’ll get flicked, time to go home again.”Haddin, who became Australia’s keeper following Adam Gilchrist’s retirement last year, struggled with niggles during the tours of the Caribbean and India. Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, said Haddin would benefit from a short break.”Brad arrived in Melbourne yesterday feeling the effects of his heavy workload over the past three months,” Hilditch said on Saturday. “In accordance with our policy of managing the workloads of players involved in all three forms of the game, it was decided that he would benefit from not playing in the two Twenty20 internationals.”Despite being initially selected in the squad, we wanted to assess Brad once he had arrived in Melbourne. It is the same process we employ for all players in that we assess them after they have had a chance to rest and recover immediately following a match, especially if they have been involved in a lot of cricket as Brad has been.”Haddin was not the only player being watched closely in the lead-up to Sunday’s match. Michael Hussey missed practice in Melbourne on Friday because of a stomach bug but is expected to play.

Sri Lanka and Pakistan are gearing up for the World Cup with a tri-series against Bangladesh

Bangladesh will hope a good show in the tri-series will help their case for one-day status © TigerCricket.com
Sri Lanka and Pakistan go into the tri-series in Bangladesh, which begins tomorrow, looking for practice ahead of the World Cup where they will hope their performance impresses other sides enough to secure more bilateral series. The series may not be the ideal preparation for the World Cup but Sri Lanka and Pakistan, along with Australia and New Zealand, are the only teams playing international cricket a month before the tournament, which gives them some edge over the rest.India dominated the Asia Cup last May but the others managed to take some positives from the tournament. Sri Lanka reached the final – and will be favourites in the tri-series – while Bangladesh beat Pakistan before losing to them later.Sri Lanka followed up the Asia Cup with a 3-2 win over West Indies at home. They have a strong batting line-up led by opener Dedunu Silva. Their bowling is anchored by spinners Suwini de Alwis, who took 21 wickets in the previous two series, and captain Shashikala Siriwardene, who took 19 in the same.Pakistan, whose series against West Indies was cancelled because of security concerns, and Bangladesh – who are yet to gain one-day status – have not played since May last year. Pakistan have included some fresh faces in the squad but it’s the experienced hands – captain Urooj Mumtaz and Sajjida Shah, their leading run-getter in the Asia Cup – who remain the ones to watch out for. These two will have to click if Pakistan have any hope of beating Sri Lanka and gaining a psychological advantage ahead of the World Cup. The team played Under-15 and Under-19 men’s teams in preparing for the tri-series.For Bangladesh, a good show will strengthen their campaign for one-day status. The 18-year old captain Salma Khatun leads a very young squad, which includes Lily Bishwash, at 14 the tournament’s youngest player. Khatun believed the team had improved since playing the Asia Cup. “We have played two practice matches prior to the series and I think we are a much improved side now,” Katun was quoted as saying in Bangladesh’s .Sri Lanka and Pakistan will be taking the same squads to Australia so while the tri-series won’t serve as a selection test, it will give the captains a better idea on whom to play. Other players to watch out for are:Chamari Polgampola, the Sri Lankan medium-pacer, took five wickets and scored 105 runs in five games against West Indies.Panna Ghosh was the Player of the Tournament in Bangladesh’s first international series – the Asian Cricket Council women’s Trophy – for her nine wickets and 75 runs. But she struggled against the bigger teams, taking five wickets in six Asia Cup games. This time, playing at home in familiar conditions, she could give Bangladesh crucial breakthroughs.Tithy Sarkar, the Bangladesh offspinner, took a career-best seven wickets against Pakistan – including a career-best 4 for 25 – in the Asia Cup and will be keen to add to her kitty when the teams meet on Friday.Pakistan opener Bismah Maroof had a poor Asia Cup – only 40 runs from six games – and her team will hope she can fire before the World Cup. She will have a new opening partner to work with as Tasqeen Qadeer was left out of the squad.

Stephens out for up to three months

An update has emerged on Southampton centre-back Jack Stephens, regarding his knee injury.

What’s the latest?

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has confirmed that Jack Stephens could be out of action for up to three months with a knee injury.

The centre-back came off in the first-half against Manchester City at the weekend and Hasenhuttl has now revealed how long he is set to be out for.

He told the Independent:

“His tendon on the knee is disrupted. I don’t know how long, it could be 10 to 12 weeks, but it will take quite a serious time.”

Fans will be devastated

Southampton fans will be devastated by this news as it is a big blow for the club and for Stephens, given how he worked his way into the side this season.

He had started all five of the club’s Premier League matches and will now be forced to watch on from the sidelines without being able to impact the play on the pitch.

Stephens played 18 times in the Premier League last term, averaging a solid SofaScore rating of 6.71. He made 1.9 tackles and 1.6 interceptions per game, showing off his defensive quality at the heart of the back four, which he carried into the current campaign.

Hasenhuttl lauded the central defender earlier this season, telling the Daily Echo: “When Jack works on his defensive duels and is aggressive there, and nasty, then he is a very good centre-back.

“He is like a leader at the back at the moment, he has really fought for his position and doesn’t want to give it away so easily.

“I think at the moment he shows how important he can be for this club and this is what I need, a guy who is good on the ball but also wins his duels.

“This was sometimes the problems with Jack, that he is a little bit too nice, too calm and a little bit too less aggressive, now when he is defending forward he is strong and this is what I demand of the player, and what he needs to do consistently.”

This illustrates how important to the Saints the £50k-per-week beast has been of late, with Hasenhuttl singing his praises for his improvement at the back.

Therefore, fans will be gutted that he will not be able to continue his development as he now needs to recover from a big injury, leaving the Saints without their first-choice centre-back for the foreseeable future.

Ashley Preece on Aston Villa’s tactics

The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece has revealed what Dean Smith has told him about his potential tactical plans at Aston Villa.

What’s the story?

The Villa boss has opted to go with a back-three in recent weeks, and it served him very well just last weekend when they beat Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

And now, in a Q&A for The Birmingham Mail, Preece has explained how Leon Bailey could potentially fit into the fold at Villa Park, and the kind of variety Smith has at his disposal.

He said: “Yes, there’s so much flexibility. Bailey could play behind a striker in a 3-5-1-1 system, for example. Loads of strings to Villa’s bow now. ‘It’ll be horses for different courses,’ Smith has told me.”

Tactical evolution at Villa Park

With Bailey of course out injured at the moment, but one of the club’s marquee signings, Villa fans will be excited at the prospect of how Smith chooses to utilise the Jamaica international in his starting line-up.

The former Bayer Leverkusen star came on for Matt Targett and operated as a more attacking wing-back against Everton last time out, and scored one and essentially made another when his corner was headed into his own net by Lucas Digne.

Whether that position is what would get the best out of Bailey remains to be seen, but as Preece says, the Jamaican could be an intriguing option as someone to operate a lone striker, whether that’s Ollie Watkins or Danny Ings.

Whatever the case, this new tactical shift to a back-three this season in the Premier League could throw up some exciting combinations and line-ups from Smith.

Meanwhile, Gregg Evans drops an Aston Villa update on this star…

Former West Indies captain Richie Richardson has signed to play for Surrey side Thames Ditton, according to a report in the Esher News & Mail. Richardson, who turned 47 last month, will play for the club as well as coaching the colts and senior sides.”We’ve really fallen on our feet,” Oliver Turnbull, the club’s director of cricket, told the newspaper. “When I first said I was trying to get Richie Richardson, everyone just laughed, but as we got nearer to an agreement people started taking it more seriously. The general reaction is amazement. I am not sure people can believe that Richie Richardson is going to be joining us.”Richardson, who scored 5945 runs in 86 Tests between 1982-83 and 1995, will combine his cricketing duties with working for the Antiguan tourist board.”I’m delighted to have agreed to come and play for Thames Ditton as their overseas amateur player for the season and for future years,” Richardson was quoted as saying. “It’s a wonderful club and I’m really excited to be joining and helping out.””He’s quite a private guy, who just wants to be Richie Richardson the person rather than Richie Richardson the Test star and have a barbecue and a beer with some mates and relax, which he can at Thames Ditton,” Turnbull said. The club plays at Giggs Hill Green, which is situated between Esher and Surbiton, and is surrounded on all sides by roads, and players have to cross one of them to reach the playing area. The roads and surrounding houses are within easy hitting distance. The club, which plays in the fifth division of the Surrey Championship, has been in existence since the early 19th century. The first man to lead a side from England to Australia in 1861-62, Heathfield Stephenson, played for the club, as did Tom Richardson, the legendary Surrey and England fast bowler.
