Hatfield: Aston Villa wouldn’t have paid £50m for Ward-Prowse

Aston Villa would not have paid £50m for James Ward-Prowse before he signed his new Southampton contract, says Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield.

Manager Dean Smith was keen to bring Ward-Prowse to Villa, with Sky Sports reporting back in July that the Midlands club had made an unsuccessful £25m bid for the player.

Ward-Prowse has since put pen to paper on a new five-year deal, ending Villa’s pursuit for the summer.

However, prior, The Athletic reported that a sale was possible if the Villans offered half of the money they received for Jack Grealish, now of Manchester City.

According to Hatfield, though, Villa were never going to offer that kind of money. He told FFC:

“I don’t think Villa would’ve met the £50m asking price if I’m being brutally honest.

“Dean Smith’s always been after Premier League experience and players he thinks could help Villa. But at that price, it would’ve been very hard to see Villa splashing the cash and doing that one.”

From Southampton’s perspective, they will be relieved that they have managed to keep hold of Ward-Prowse.

The Saints have already lost Danny Ings and Jannik Vestergaard this summer, sanctioning sales to Villa and Leicester City respectively. To lose Ward-Prowse as well would have been a devastating blow.

Doubts resurface over Sri Lanka's England tour

Doubts over whether Sri Lanka’s Test series against England in May 2009 will actually take place have resurfaced

Cricinfo staff26-Sep-2008Doubts over whether Sri Lanka’s Test series against England in May 2009 will actually take place have resurfaced after The Times reported that Durham, who host the second Test, have been told by the ECB to hold fire on selling tickets. The series clashes with the latter stages of the IPL, and a number of the Sri Lankan squad have signed lucrative contracts to play in that. Sri Lanka Cricket, however, stands to earn around £1 million from the England matches and is keen for them to go ahead. The tour was arranged earlier this year after the scheduled visit by Zimbabwe was scrapped by the ECB.Although the itinerary has been announced and both boards have said the trip will go ahead, there remain major question marks over who exactly Sri Lanka will send. If it is a weakened side then there would be concerns about the viability, not to mention the credibility, of the series.Around a dozen players maintain that they were given assurances that they could honour their IPL commitments before the tour was agreed. The ECB’s concerns that the series will be treated as of secondary importance will have been heightened by comments from Gamini Lokuge, Sri Lanka’s sports minster, following a meeting with SLC officials earlier this week. “I want the contracted players to honour their commitments with the IPL,” he said. “I don’t want the tour to England be called off. But the team on English soil can have non-contracted IPL players.”Earlier this month, Arjuna Ranatunga, the interim committee chief of SLC, insisted the tour would go ahead. “We have a memorandum of understanding with the England and Wales Cricket Board for the tour and we must honour that,” he said.

West Brom could make Molumby move permanent

West Brom could turn Jayson Molumby’s temporary summer move into a permanent one, according to reliable journalist Steve Madeley.

The Lowdown: West Brom sign Molumby on loan

The Baggies have made a commanding start to their Championship season, looking every bit promotion hopefuls and playing good football under new manager Valerien Ismael.

On Friday, they completed the loan signing of Molumby, with the 22-year-old joining from Brighton, having made five appearances for the Seagulls to date.

The Latest: Deal could become permanent

Taking to Twitter, The Athletic‘s Madeley claimed it is ‘very likely’ that the move will become permanent eventually, with Brighton seemingly not seeing a future for Molumby at the club.

The midfielder’s current Brighton deal expires next summer, meaning West Brom could snap him up on a free transfer in 2022.

The Verdict: Shrewd addition by Baggies

Molumby may not be good enough to be starting regularly for a Premier League club, but he could be a strong addition to the Baggies’ squad, having made 51 appearances in the Championship.

He could add depth in midfield areas and allow Ismael to rotate his squad more, and if he does impress, getting him for free next year could prove to be a bargain as an upgrade to the depth at the club, whether he can improve to be a Premier League regular or not.

In other news, one West Brom player has been tipped to sign a new deal. Find out who it is here.

McCullum ready for 'vulnerable' opponent

New Zealand remain full of hope as they attempt to break a 23-year drought without a Test win in Australia and erase some poor recent results

New Zealand remain full of hope as they attempt to break a 23-year drought without a Test win in Australia and erase some poor recent results. The tourists barely managed to beat Bangladesh in the first Test last month and lost a warm-up game against New South Wales on Sunday, which was not ideal preparation for Thursday’s opening match at the Gabba. The wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum, who is battling a foot injury sustained in Sydney, hopes to be fit and is in no doubt about the difference between the top-ranked Australia and New Zealand, who are seventh, one point above West Indies. “There’s such a big gulf in terms of what Australia’s achieved and what we’ve achieved in the last little while in Test cricket,” McCullum said. “From that perspective there’s probably no reason why people would think it would be an even contest.”Sections of the local media have already called the tourists the weakest New Zealand team to tour Australia for decades, but McCullum has not downgraded his aims and wants their first Test win since 1985-86. “We’re incredibly high on self-belief and drive within our unit, and trying to achieve something that hasn’t been achieved over here for 20-odd years,” he said. “There’s huge motivation for us to try and come up with a pretty special victory.”The visiting squad contains a host of players who have not been part of heavy beatings from Australia, although this team is less formidable than those which included Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne. Australia are coming off a 2-0 series loss to India last week but it is hard to discuss the tourists without mentioning their inexperience.”We’re at long odds but also with nothing to lose,” McCullum said. “You’ll probably see guys play with a lot less fear than what we have done in the past. When you are such rank outsiders you can almost throw a little bit more caution to the wind.”With fewer battle scars in our squad than what we had in the past, that’s pretty exciting as well. Guys aren’t as fearful of the Australian team because we haven’t got the experience and played them a lot as a team.”McCullum said the top six would aim for a first-innings score of at least 400 in a bid to put pressure on the hosts, who he still rates as the game’s No. 1 outfit. “They’re more vulnerable but they’re still by far and away the best team in the world,” he said. “They lost one series and they’re being ridiculed in the paper for it, but in our minds they’re still by far and away the best team.”The conditions at the Gabba should suit the visitors, with the rain and extra moisture helping their attack, which includes the fast bowler Kyle Mills. The absence of Jacob Oram, who scored a century here four years ago, with injury is significant and during the series there will be times when they wish for someone of the quality of Shane Bond, who is banned because of his links with the Indian Cricket League.”[Jacob is] huge for us and he really helps the balance, batting at seven and bowling third-change,” Mills said. “He’s going to be a big loss. We’ve experienced in the past guys like Shane Bond being injured before, we’re used to experiencing that. With Jacob out the rest of us have to step up.”West Indies and Sri Lanka have been hit hard by the Indian Twenty20 competitions, but New Zealand have suffered the most and lost a core of experienced players. Now they are trying to patch up a squad that can compete with Australia.”I can think of seven or eight guys who have gone to the ICL and that takes our whole depth out of the country,” Mills said. “It’s disappointing, when you’re playing for the Black Caps, you want your best team playing at all time.”
