Cornelius the latest in the stress fracture ranks

Another fast bowler from New Zealand has succumbed to a stress fracture of the back following similar injuries to Dion Nash, Geoff Allott and Daniel Vettori

Matthew Appleby19-Mar-2002Another fast bowler from New Zealand has succumbed to a stress fracture of the back following similar injuries to Dion Nash, Geoff Allott and Daniel Vettori.Canterbury’s Wade Cornelius has been struggling with back pain for “the last couple of games,” said coach Michael Sharpe, who lost a bowler early on for the third State Championship match in a row.Cornelius, who has been Canterbury’s breakthrough player this year with 33 first-class wickets at 16, told CricInfo, “It’s a bit sad, but I suppose it could have come at a worse time.”Following he and brother Cleighten opening the bowling together for Canterbury this week against Auckland, the first time siblings have shared the new ball for the province since Richard and Dayle Hadlee 20 years ago, yesterday’s day of celebration turned sour at the doctor’s this morning.Cornelius said, “I’ve had an x-ray that shows two stress fractures,” adding that the next step was to further confirm the diagnosis with a bone scan.”It puts paid to my chances of going to England for the winter,” he continued.Just last Saturday former Lancaster Park team-mate Jimmy Hindson, who played for Nottinghamshire from 1992-97 phoned Cornelius to ask him to play in the Nottinghamshire League for Caythorpe, where the left-arm spinner is professional.”I’ll have to see if I can go as a batsman,” joked the likeable tail-ender Cornelius, who will join the likes of Chris Cairns, Shane Bond and Warren Wisneski in the sickbay of Canterbury and New Zealand cricket.

Wolves interested in Leicester’s Danny Ward

Wolves may not have much left in the financial kitty this summer but that hasn’t stopped them from ramping up their efforts in the transfer market.

The Old Gold have made a bid to sign Brazilian starlet Kaio Jorge while landing James Tarkowski is also a possibility.

What’s the word?

Wolves may lose John Ruddy this summer with his contract expiring but they could also lose number one goalkeeper Rui Patricio.

He has attracted the attention of Roma and a deal is thought to be edging closer to completion.

With that in mind, Bruno Lage will need to find a new ‘keeper in order to bolster the Wolves ranks.

According to Football Insider, they are interested in signing Leicester City’s Danny Ward.

He has caught the eye for Wales at Euro 2020 and it would appear that Wolves have been left impressed by his performances.

Brilliant business

If Lage can convince Ward to move across the Midlands then it would be an astute replacement from Patricio.

They will need a capable and experienced man to replace the Portugal international, but fortunately, those are areas that Ward ticks the boxes of.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-news-alena-dike-neves-barisic” title=”Real the latest Wolves transfer news!”]

The 28-year-old remarkably hasn’t played a game of league football since May 2017 but his displays during the ongoing European Championships have been nothing short of superb.

Ward has made a succession of top-drawer stops for his country, making 4.3 saves per 90 minutes, the third-highest number at the tournament.

On top of that, the Welshman has prevented more xG (3.77) than any other number 1 during the Euros. The next best goalkeeper is Finland’s Lukas Hradecky on 2.27.

Speaking about his form this summer, Andy King commented: “He’s been one of Wales’ outstanding players in this tournament.”

King continued: “He’s been absolutely brilliant. For someone who doesn’t play football for their club week in, week out, he’s assured in everything he’s done.

“He’s been commanding, he’s come for crosses and his distribution has been excellent.”

With that in mind, Ward is surely ready for more first-team football once the tournament has concluded.

Wolves need a new stopper and the Wales international should be searching for a better chance elsewhere.

A lack of league football isn’t always indicative of where you are as a footballer. You only need to look across the Midlands to Emi Martinez.

He only ever managed 15 league appearances for Arsenal but rocked up at Aston Villa to take the top-flight by storm. Martinez kept 15 clean sheets last term and made 142 saves, only to be bettered by Sam Johnstone and Aaron Ramsdale.

Wolves should repeat a similar trick this summer by landing Ward; he has proven to be a reliable and exceptional shot-stopper.

Depleted Kiwis pin hope on Vettori for Tests

The growing injury list and Pakistan’s undoubted all-round superiority has forced the Black Caps to reconsider their strategy as cricket comes to the Punjab metropolis for Saturday’s third and final One-day International , followed up by the first

Samiul Hasan26-Apr-2002The growing injury list and Pakistan’s undoubted all-round superiority has forced the Black Caps to reconsider their strategy as cricket comes to the Punjab metropolis for Saturday’s third and final One-day International , followed up by the first Test starting Wednesday.Arriving in the country without experienced quartet of Chris Cairns, Shane Bond, Dion Nash and Daniel Vettori, the New Zealanders have struggled to field their strongest team. The tourists were without skipper Stephen Fleming, Scott Styris and Chris Nevin in Sunday’s 153-run defeat in Karachi and were depleted with the absence of their most successful one-day bowler Chris Harris and proven Nathan Astle in Wednesday’s three-wicket defeat in Rawalpindi.Barring Astle, whose tour has been cut short because of tendon injury in the left knee, the rest are down with food poisoning. To further compound Kiwis cause, Pakistan has been without any injury problems and playing as a close knit unit with everyone chipping in.Fleming, wary of the situation, has now started banking on his young left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori who will be joining the team for the two Tests.”We lack the fire power because of the players we are missing. But Daniel Vettori is a big card and he is coming over for Tests. He is the guy who can apply pressure in Test matches,” Fleming said.”Daniel is the trump card and rest of the bowlers can bowl around him. If you have the trump card, you can play the other ones and use a few tricks,” he added. But the left-handed batsman was not completely disappointed with his team’s performance in the first two One-dayers.”I am pleased with the commitment of the players in the field. We pushed Pakistan to the end (in the second match) and I think it is a pretty good performance. But I am not completely satisfied with some of the conditions and states off-the-field,” he said, referring to the injury problems. But the visitors can definitely take a big heart from the Rawalpindi match where their batsmen showed determination by occupying the crease and build partnerships. Craig McMillan, Matthew Horne and Andre Adams gave good account. The New Zealanders, despite ending up on the losing side, also need to be praised for taking a full strength Pakistan down to the wire with limited resources available. And this is the fact that needs to be resolved if one is a Pakistan team supporter. Without belittling their performances this month, probably Australia or any team at its full strength would not have allowed Pakistan to recover from two for six and reach 278 with 17 balls and three wickets to spare.Pakistan are scheduled to play Australia thrice this year, South Africa and Sri Lanka twice. And if serious thoughts are not put in, the situation might not be as pleasing as it looks at the moment when Pakistan are sitting pretty with one-day series in their pocket. The openers Imran Nazir and Shahid Afridi but have not been consistent and their career averages around 25 each, confirms their unreliability and a lack of technique at the highest level. With such an unpredictable opening pair, the pressure will most of the time be on the middle-order. Against better teams Yousuf Youhana, Younis Khan and Abdul Razzaq will not always rise to the occasion and bail the team out of crisis.”If you are preparing for the World Cup, I think the team management should compare themselves with Australia or South Africa,” former captain Aamir Sohail said, adding: “As a team, I believe Pakistan is at par, maybe a bit better than Sri Lanka, England and New Zealand. But still there is gap between the two best teams and Pakistan.”He added: “Pakistan’s real potential and mental toughness will be tested when they will lock horns with experienced and teams at full strength. It is good that Pakistan is winning, but I would like to see them learn more from these victories.”There has been no real signs of improvement in Pakistan’s fielding. There were wild throws in Rawalpindi and the close-in fielders continued to miss the stumps. Meanwhile, Pakistan are expected to rest Wasim Akram and Saqlain Mushtaq and replace them with youngsters Mohammad Sami and Shoaib Malik for the final One-day International against New Zealand tomorrow. The team management is also contemplating giving Shoaib Akhtar a break. But no firm decision has been taken till late Thursday. If Shoaib sits out, all-rounder Yasir Arafat will be drafted in.

Liam Kennedy claims PIF are still ready to buy Newcastle United

July has been bigged up as the month where things finally start moving into place regarding the Newcastle United takeover, whether that be positively or negatively.

However, journalist for the Shields Gazette, Liam Kennedy, believes that nothing has changed since last year so the consortium are still ready to buy the club, when speaking to FFC.

It appears a long time ago now but just over 12 months ago, Newcastle fans were dreaming of being a money-rich club that would be able to compete with clubs challenging for the top half of the league and Europa League, but now it appears very much in the unknown whether or not PCP Capital Partners, backed largely by PIF, will be the club’s new owners anytime soon.

Mike Ashley and his legal team are currently in an anti-competition case against the Premier League and the big arbitration battle is set to start sometime this month, and that outcome will be legally binding, no matter what the verdict is.

Despite more than 12 months in the wilderness regarding the takeover, there is still confidence that Newcastle will get new owners as PCP Capital Partners still have everything in place to buy the club when they get the green light, according to Kennedy who spoke to Football FanCast:

“I wouldn’t say it was straightforward but, are the consortium ready to go? Yes, that is my understanding, that very little has changed in the last year.”

Ashley has never been the most forthcoming owner in terms of spending money on players, managers or the general upkeeping of the club so, a new owner who would hold an active interest in the team and city is very much needed on Tyneside.

The Sports Direct tycoon is confident that he can win the legal battles and then get the takeover passed through which would see him become £340 million wealthier, not that he needs the money judging by the Sunday Times’ rich list.

Robinson lauds Everton target Dumfries

Paul Robinson has lauded Denzel Dumfries as Fabrizio Romano gave the latest on Everton’s pursuit of him in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Dumfries competition

There have been various reports throughout the window so far that the Goodison Park faithful are set to face competition from Inter Milan to sign Dumfries.

However, Italian football journalist and transfer expert Romano has recently given an update on his Twitch channel (via Football Insider), regarding talks of the Merseyside club signing the PSV ace, claiming that they have ‘gone quiet’.

The Latest: Robinson lauds Dumfries

Speaking to Football Insider, Robinson, former goalkeeper for the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United and England, has lauded Dumfries, and claimed that Rafa Benitez’s team should do everything that they can to sign him:

“Everton should do everything they can to get Dumfries.

“He was brilliant at the Euros and I think he was the best player for the Dutch.

“For the Netherlands he plays very high up the field and he showed that he can play wing-back as well as full-back. He can go forward and he can create.

“Everton will not be the only suitors. I think a number of Premier League clubs will be looking at him. If Everton can get him it would be a big coup.”

The Verdict: No-brainer

It is certainly a no-brainer that the Toffees should be going all out to try and sign Dumfries ahead of the likes of Inter in this window.

As Robinson rightfully points out, the right-back impressed at Euro 2020 with The Netherlands, scoring two goals in the group stages (Sofascore).

At club level, his attacking exploits are no different, scoring four times and making a further nine assists in 41 games over all competitions in the 2020/21 term (Transfermarkt).

Nonetheless, at 25 years of age, and being the captain of PSV, he is the perfect long-term successor to the ageing Seamus Coleman, and so the Blues should be all over a deal.
