West Ham United booked their spot in the third round of the EFL Cup courtesy of a 2-0 victory at Newport County on Tuesday night.

It was far from a vintage performance from the Hammers, although it would probably be fair to say that their Premier League quality ultimately proved too much for the hosts.

Jack Wilshere and Pablo Fornals scored the goals for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, who were also victorious away to Watford in the Premier League at the weekend.

Aaron Cresswell has already had a tough time from the West Ham fans in the early stages of the 2019-20 campaign.

And many took to social media on Tuesday evening to slam the Englishman’s performance at Rodney Parade.

Cresswell was guilty of some lacklustre moments during his 90 minutes on the field, and the West Ham supporters were very upset with what they saw on the night.

Football fans tend to have long memories.

They will sometimes hold a grudge against a player who celebrated in front of them for the remainder of that man’s career.

They will remember a referee who had a terrible performance which did not benefit their side.

However, in some Crystal Palace fans’ cases, they may instead have short memories after reacting so badly to the club’s lack of signings this summer.

Just nine years ago, the Eagles were on the brink of falling into obscurity with liquidation looming, before Steve Parish and the rest of a consortium named ‘CPFC 2010’ saved them.

Speaking on the HLTCO podcast, Parish said: “In the summer when we were looking for those positions we felt the prices were very inflated, there was a lot of risk in some of the options that were out there.

“It is very easy to waste money, spending money per se doesn’t do anything but make everybody happy for a few weeks because you’ve got an expensive signing.”

Whilst you can easily point the finger at him and say that the squad should be in far better condition than it is – Roy Hodgson was forced to play a centre-back and a centre-midfielder in the full-back positions recently – you can’t blame Parish for being careful and wanting to wait for the right opportunity.

So many clubs splash the cash on seemingly exciting players who simply don’t cut the mustard.

Let’s look at Southampton, for example. The Saints spent a combined sum of £68.1m on the likes of Wesley Hoedt, Mario Lemina, Mohamed Elyounoussi and Guido Carrillo, all of whom would presumably have excited the fanbase when signing.

However, Elyounoussi has since been loaned to Celtic whilst Carrillo has joined Leganes on loan, with Hoedt and Lemina also going on September 2 – it seems like a far-fetched thought that the Saints will even get a fraction of their £68.1m back.

Right now, with clubs like Bury going under and Bolton only just surviving by the skin of their teeth, Parish is completely within his rights to be careful and wait for the right moment – even if it does infuriate some supporters.

وأردف: “لم نكن جيدين بما يكفي في الشوط الأول للهجوم في المساحات، لم يكن إيجاد الحل سهلاً دائمًا وفقدنا بعض الثقة مع بعض الخسائر السهلة للكرة”.

وواصل المدرب الألماني: “قلنا في الشوط الأول لا داعي للقلق، لقد تغيرنا إلى 5-3-2 للحصول على الكرة بشكل أفضل واستعادة الثقة، وقد فعل اللاعبون ذلك بشكل جيد للغاية، كنا قريبين جدًا من الفوز”.

وأكد مدرب تشيلسي: “أنا سعيد للغاية، أمام فريق مثل مانشستر يونايتد لا تحصل على الكثير من الفرص”.

واستطرد توخيل: “لقد أتيحت لنا فرص أفضل ولعبنا في الشوط الثاني، علينا أن نقبل التعادل في النهاية وشباكنا نظيفة، لقد كان رد فعلنا جيدًا للغاية بعد نهاية الشوط الأول، ذهبنا للفوز لكن ذلك لم يحدث”.

وأكمل: “في هذا المستوى في بعض النقاط، ربما تكون فرصتان كافيتان، إذا لم تفعل ذلك، فعلينا أن نكون متيقظين ومدركين للهجمات المرتدة والجودة من مانشستر يونايتد، لقد فعلنا ذلك ودافعنا جيد جدًا، كان هذا جهدًا وجودة غير عادية، نأخذها ونواصلها”.

أكد أندريا أنييلي رئيس نادي يوفنتوس اقتراب الاتفاق حول النظام الجديد لبطولة دوري أبطال أوروبا.

وقدمت رابطة الأندية الأوروبية التي يترأسها أنييلي، اقتراحًا بتغيير نظام دوري الأبطال بداية من عام 2024، بمشاركة 36 فريقًا بدلًا من 32 في دور المجموعات، وهو ما يُعرف باسم “النظام السويسري”.

وأضاف: “ستستمر المناقشات حول من سيستفيد من المقاعد الأربع الإضافية، رغم أنه من المحتمل أن يتم تخصيص واحدة منها لـ فرنسا، والتي لديها 3 مقاعد فقط، لتتماشى مع إنجلترا وإسبانيا وألمانيا وإيطاليا”.

وأكمل: سيشهد الشكل الجديد إلغاء نظام دور المجموعات الحالي، وسيحل مكانه مجموعة واحدة من 36 ناديًا يلعبون 10 مباريات ضد 10 خصوم مختلفين، قبل الانتقال إلى مرحلة خروج المغلوب”.

وشدد: “سيكون هناك تفاصيل أكبر في الفترة المقبلة، لتوضيح الفكرة بشكل أبسط، ولكن من المرجح أن تؤدي هذه البطولة المصغرة إلى ظهور إعلامي أكبر، وبالتالي تضخم حقوق التلفزيون”.

This isn’t a trend that has carried over to his club career as he hasn’t actually scored the fourth goal for his team since the 2013/14 season with PSV against NEC Nijmegen.

He came close to changing that last season as he scored twice in Liverpool’s 4-0 win against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final at Anfield, but it was Divock Origi who had the honour of netting the decisive fourth goal in that game.

Many Liverpool fans will be hoping that Wijnaldum’s goalscoring form can carry over when he pulls on a red shirt, as he’s only netted seven times over the past two seasons.

Leicester City tried and failed in an attempt to sign a Harry Maguire replacement, according to reports.

Championat claim (via Sport Witness) that the Foxes attempted to go after Solomon Kvirkvelia from Lokomotiv Moscow; however, it is claimed by his agent that the player rejected the club.

Mamuka Dzguheli, Kvirkvelia’s agent said: “Leicester offered €10m for Solomon but he rejected it because he wants to become a champion with Lokomotiv. He said he wanted to stay at the club for the time being.

“He feels he has a debt to pay to the club and the staff. He believes he will still get great offers after the end of this season.”

The Georgia international joined from Rubin Kazan in 2017.

With Leicester selling Harry Maguire for a world-record transfer fee for a defender (£80m), there was much anticipation to see whether they would reinvest that money into finding a new centre-back. Despite showing interest in Nathan Ake and James Tarkowski (Leicester Mercury), it was claimed that they were priced out for either defender, with Bournemouth and Burnley asking for £75m and £40m respectively.

Eventually, the club opted to stick with Caglar Soyuncu, who they bought the previous summer from Freiburg. And so far, it has paid off. The Turkish defender has played every game this season and averages a healthy 7.28/10 rating on WhoScored – the fourth highest of the entire squad. Additionally, he has averaged 4.5 aerial duels won per game, the highest in the squad.

Kvirkvelia is clearly a top player in the Russian Premier League – he played every league game last season and had an average rating of 6.99. However, at 27 years of age Leicester already have younger options who are similarly inexperienced in the Premier League.

With Leicester having four decent centre-backs in their ranks, failing to sign Kvirkvelia is not the end of the world, as Soyuncu has really stepped up to the plate.

Leicester also have Filip Benkovic at their disposal. In the Croatian and Soyuncu, they have two young centre-backs for the future; if they signed Kvirkvelia – who is hardly young at 27 – that may have prevented them from developing.

Many Everton supporters have been reacting on social media, after Sky Sports claimed Qatari side Al Gharafa are willing to make a substantial bid for Cenk Tosun.

The Turkey international has struggled for minutes under Marco Silva following the arrival of Moise Kean from Juventus, with the Portuguese head coach only awarding Tosun one outing lasting 16 minutes so far this term (TransferMarkt), coming in the Carabao Cup.

Wetzlar, Germany-born Tosun was even omitted from Silva’s matchday squad for Everton’s trip to AFC Bournemouth at the weekend, where Dominic Calvert-Lewin led the Blues’ attack before Kean replaced him in the second-half.

Sky Sports understand Al Gharafa are willing to make an official move for Tosun in the coming days, as they look to finalise their squad ahead of the Qatari transfer window closing on September 30.

The Daily Mail have also claimed that Al Gharafa are looking to formalise their approach as they want to conclude a transfer as soon as possible, while suggesting Everton are happy for Tosun to join former Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic at the Thani bin Jassim Stadium.

Tosun may also be willing to accept the Qatari side’s offer despite being reluctant to leave Everton in the summer, as his place in Turkey’s Euro 2020 squad is at stake. The 28-year-old had felt he could fight for his position under Silva.

Everton fans reacting to the reports of Al Gharafa moving for Tosun have offered a range of views on the matter, with some corners of the Goodison Park faithful open to his departure given his current predicament.

On the other side of the table, there are fans that would prefer to see Silva hand Tosun another chance to prove his worth, as the Eintracht Frankfurt product is ‘the best’ striker at the Portuguese’s disposal right now.

Silva’s preference to continue with Calvert-Lewin has also been a key take shared on social media, with Blues supporters suggesting the Sheffield United academy graduate should be the one making way.

Jokanovic was appointed as Al Gharafa’s new head coach in July, and has drawn and won his opening two Qatar Stars League fixtures.

Rangers’ hectic fixture list means the Gers will be back in action on Wednesday night, as they take on Livingston in the Scottish League Cup quarter-finals.

The Gers will be pleased with the start to their season as, Old Firm derby defeat aside, they’ve looked the real deal under Steven Gerrard – winning all of their remaining five top flight games – and silverware will therefore be wanted come the end of the campaign.

What trophy the Gers pick up, if any, remains to be seen, but it is most likely the league crown that they want most of all and with an attacking pair in the shape of Jermain Defoe and Alfredo Morelos leading the line, who’s to say that they cannot stop Celtic from winning nine-in-a-row this season. The two strikers have netted nine times in the Scottish top flight already this term.

You might think, then, that with two forwards vying for one starting berth under Gerrard there would be friction but, judging by this GIF of Alfredo Morelos after Defoe’s brace at the weekend, there’s a happy relationship between the two:

Morelos has certainly looks fully focused on scoring goals this season and nothing else – something his veteran striking rival has based his career upon. Keeping both sweet will be a big task for Gerrard, but Morelos’ reaction to Defoe’s brace suggests they are prepared to work together rather than try and fire Rangers to glory single-handed.
