Wolves are firmly in the race to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Palhinha in the upcoming summer transfer window with the futures of midfield duo Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho in serious doubt.

According to transfer insider Dean Jones, the West Midlands club are in the hunt for Palhinha’s signature.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the journalist said: “Wolves are definitely in the hunt for people like that, and I think Tottenham were interested in Palhinha. But I would imagine that Wolves would probably have the jump on them for a player like that, to be honest.”

The Athletic’s David Ornstein had confirmed that Bruno Lage’s side are interested in Palhinha as well as Matheus Luiz Nunes last week with Neves and Moutinho’s respective futures in doubt.

Now, it seems that the Black Country outfit could have the upper hand in the race to sign the 26-year-old midfielder.

Lage must swoop for Palhinha

Already there’s an argument that Wolves need to add to their midfield but if Neves and Moutinho are both to depart then it will be absolutely vital to recruit in the middle of the park.

The latter’s contract is set to expire in June whilst the former has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United and there is an understanding that the 25-year-old will be allowed to depart for a bigger club after five years of excellent service if a suitable offer comes in.

At 26, Palhinha is at an excellent age to be a long-term replacement for either figure with the Sporting star regularly impressing on the European stage.

In fact, manager Ruben Amorim labelled the Portuguese as a “special player” amid links to Manchester United last season.

The £23.4m-rated defensive midfielder has 16 caps for Portugal as well as 212 senior appearances at club level but has never left his native Portugal.

According to SofaScore, the 26-year-old has averaged an impressive 7.14 match rating in the Primeira Liga, completing 87% of his passes and maintaining a 58% dribble accuracy.

From a defensive aspect, Palhinha has been excellent, chipping in with an average of 3.1 tackles per game as well as one interception and one clearance.

Compared to Neves, the current Wolves player slightly edges his fellow countryman in the Premier League, averaging a 7.2 rating whilst having a slightly lower passing accuracy at 84%.

Moreover, the 25-year-old is currently contributing 1.3 interceptions, 2.3 tackles and 1.4 clearances.

However, this shows that if Neves is to depart and Palhinha is the man to replace the loyal servant, Wolves’ midfield will still be in excellent hands.

وأشارت إلى أن إدارة ليون سبق وأن حددت سعر بيع عوار بـ55 مليون جنيه إسترليني، ومن ثم ليس من المتوقع موافقتهم على عرض آرسنال حال تقديمه.

No Chelsea player played well during the Blues’ 6-0 annihilation at the hands of reigning Premier League champions Manchester City on Sunday. Maurizio Sarri’s side were thoroughly outclassed by Pep Guardiola’s men and will be embarrassed to have been on the receiving end of such a scoreline.

Whilst City themselves were magnificent, a few of their goals were preventable. Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga should have been able to keep Ilkay Gundogan’s first half strike out, whilst Marcos Alonso had earlier abandoned his man, which led to the opening for Raheem Sterling to slam home the first of the game.

Sergio Aguero’s second goal came from yet another error, as Ross Barkley headed the ball carelessly back into his own box, where it fell to the Argentine who made no mistake in gratefully sweeping it home into the bottom corner.

Barkley’s moment of madness will be the enduring memory of his performance at the Etihad Stadium, but there were some positives to his game that deserve recognition. 

The 25-year-old was one of the Blues’ most progressive players. As per WhoScored’s stats, he managed to complete one key pass and took on two shots against City, in both instances only one of his teammates was able to be more productive. Whilst such endeavours didn’t pay off for the midfielder, his willingness was laudable. 

On the ball, the 25-cap England international was very tidy. His pass accuracy rating of 91.2% was particularly impressive. However, he should have been more bold whilst in possession. Running with the ball is one of Barkley’s great strengths, though he only completed one successful dribble on Sunday. He was also dispossessed on two occasions, as City’s aggressive pressing overwhelmed him. 

It was by no means a good performance from Barkley against City, but nor was it from any of his teammates either. However, in the fight and persistence he showed whilst on the pitch – before being hauled off by Sarri in the 51st minute – there were some positives to glean from an outing that will otherwise only be remembered for his horrendous error.

Middlesbrough fans have taken to Twitter to heap praise on John Obi Mikel’s performance against Blackburn on Sunday, as they ran out 1-0 winners thanks to Britt Assombalonga’s goal.

According to Florian Plettenberg, chief reporter for Sport1, Newcastle United want to sign Hoffenheim forward Joelinton in this summer’s transfer window.

The 22-year-old has scored 10 times for Hoffenheim this season, six of which have arrived in 21 Bundesliga appearances.

According to the report, Newcastle are in talks to land the Brazilian forward in an incredible £52m deal.

However, it would be fair to say that the Premier League club’s fans are not that confident that the transfer will go through at the end of the season.

Indeed, one particular fan account poked fun at the transfer rumour, listing a number of things that were more likely to happen.

There is rarely smoke without a little bit of fire, but it is difficult to imagine Newcastle spending that sort of money this summer when considering the ownership situation at the club.

Loads of Everton fans have been running the rule over the win at Cardiff, and they’re completely split on the performance and future of Phil Jagielka, with Marco Silva facing a big selection dilemma at the back.

Everton got back on track with an impressive victory at the Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday night, as a brace from Gylfi Sigurdsson helped lift them to a 3-0 win.

The Icelandic international opened the scoring when he met Seamus Coleman’s well-timed cross in the first half, and doubled his tally after some nice work from Bernard in the second half.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin made sure of the three points with a late goal, but it wasn’t all plain sailing for Silva’s side, and they had plenty of defending to do in what was a very scrappy encounter.

Lucas Digne made one incredible clearance to deny a goal early on, and Jagielka had a busy evening on his return to the side, winning four aerial duels and making four clearances.

The 36 year-old started due to an injury for Yerry Mina and suspension for Kurt Zouma, and fans are now split on whether he should keep his place against Liverpool on Sunday.
