Manchester United went into the transfer window with a long list of deals that needed to be completed. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS looked to overhaul United’s squad to one that would better fit Ruben Amorim’s style of play and avoid another catastrophic Premier League season.

In terms of outgoings, they looked to offload their “bomb squad”. They successfully moved on, whether temporarily or permanently, all of its members bar Tyrell Malacia. The club also managed to move on Rasmus Hojlund on a loan with a conditional option to buy to Napoli.

On the recruitment side of things, going into the window, the priority was attacking midfielders and a striker, which United successfully signed. Once those deals were completed, the club looked at signing a goalkeeper and a midfielder, with the former arriving on deadline day with Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens.

However, the crucial midfielder was not signed despite several inquiries to a number of players. It has now been revealed that United approached Chelsea about the signing of one of their defensive midfielders.

Chelsea star Lavia among those Man Utd inquired about in midfield hunt

News has emerged that during their fruitless hunt for a new midfielder, Manchester United approached Chelsea over the signing of Romeo Lavia. The £53 million midfielder joined Chelsea in 2023 from Southampton.

Speaking to United in Focus reporter Graeme Bailey, revealed that United were interested in the Chelsea midfielder and could be keen again come Janaury.

The report also indicated that Lavia was one of the club’s four main midfield targets. Other midfielders included Sporting Lisbon’s Morten Hjulmand, Atlético Madrid’s Connor Gallagher and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, with the latter being priced at over £100 million following United’s inquiry.

United weren’t expected to have massive amounts available to spend in the transfer window this summer, but they ended up spending £216 million thanks to player sales, sell-on clauses and a new revolving credit facility. It is currently uncertain if they have enough left over to sign a new midfielder in January or if they have to wait until next summer.

If the money is available, then they will likely look at the same options they did this summer, in which case Lavia may not be the best candidate. Options like Baleba and Gallagher have performed to a higher standard in recent seasons and are more likely to be an immediate upgrade to the United squad.

One of the main reasons that these two have performed better than Lavia in recent seasons is that they’ve been available far more often.

While he could turn out to be a fantastic midfielder, his injury record makes signing him a massive gamble. Since joining Chelsea, Lavia has averaged 11.5 appearances a season, and with a club like United, who will hope to be back in Europe next season, that means he may only be available for a quarter of their games.

If Lavia was signed at the end of the summer transfer window after nothing else worked out, then he would be a useful addition to the squad. However, given the other options available, Lavia should be further down United’s transfer wishlist for January.

Daniel Gidney believes ECB should incentivise India to allow their men’s players to feature in tournament

Lancashire’s chief executive believes that the ECB should offer the BCCI a minority stake in the Hundred if it wants to attract Indian men’s players to the tournament. Active Indian men’s players are not granted No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) to play leagues outside of the IPL, and Daniel Gidney believes that “aligning interests” is the only way to prompt a change of policy.Gidney travelled to India last week to meet with the RPSG Group, who are finalising a deal which will see them acquire a 70% stake in Manchester Originals and run the franchise as a joint-venture with Lancashire. The ECB’s extended deadline for incoming investors to sign participation agreements is the end of April, with documents in the final stages of legal drafting.Several Indian women have played in the Hundred, including Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur, but no men. Richard Gould, the ECB’s chief executive, said that attracting Indian men’s players was “not priced into our plans” and that the BCCI’s stance is “very clear”, but Gidney believes an ownership interest in the Hundred could change their minds.”I think it’s possible,” Gidney told ESPNcricinfo. “If I was the ECB, I’d be talking about perhaps bringing the BCCI in as a minority ownership partner in the tournament as a whole. If you do that, then you are aligning interests. That is probably your best chance of getting [Indian men’s] players in the Hundred. It comes down to the will, and the individuals on both sides.”The BCCI have been really successful with protecting their brand and by making sure they don’t plan any T20 tournaments anywhere in the world… If I was the BCCI, then I would have to say I would need a significant incentive to relax the current policy because that has been extraordinarily successful and has grown the IPL into the massive commercial entity that it is.”Gidney believes that Lancashire – and, by extension, the Originals – are better placed than most teams to attract Indian players. “We’ve probably had more Indian overseas players than any other county,” he said. “When you have VVS Laxman at the NCA, who [Lancashire director of cricket] Mark Chilton captained, then you have strong relationships all the way through.”It’s all about relationships between stakeholders… If you build a relationship with the BCCI and understand the types of players that they see as potential future Test players, that’s a lot easier than putting in an NOC request saying ‘We’d like to see Virat Kohli or Rishabh Pant playing in the County Championship.'”More immediately, Gidney believes that English teams will play exhibition fixtures against IPL franchises. “That’s the first step,” he said. “Imagine having an LSG vs Delhi Capitals game here at Emirates Old Trafford – at the end of the season, say in September. That could be pretty mega, in terms of the Indian fans in the UK. It would make commercial sense for everybody.”The Originals have already used their link with the Super Giants to sign Noor Ahmad (as their top draft pick) and Heinrich Klaasen (as a direct signing) for the Hundred in 2025, with both players representing the RPSG Group in the SA20. “When an overseas player gets bought at auction in the IPL, and that’s locked in for three years via retentions, then it just makes commercial sense for that player to then potentially play for Durban, for Manchester, and also potentially for Lancashire in the Blast … It’s a lot more efficient, and it could become a lot more straightforward.”Gidney attended LSG’s home game against Chennai Super Kings while in India, and believes that the ECB can learn from the IPL when it comes to event presentation. “At their opening home game, they had a concert. There’s far more you can do with pyrotechnics and lights shows, and the way they use flags and replica shirts is very different to UK cricket.”But having eight investor-owned teams will encourage innovation. The ECB have done a really good job of creating this acquisition product, but they’ve had to do things in a pretty vanilla way for eight teams. They currently have eight identical DJ booths, which are all quite big: it kills about 3000 seats in the stadium here. It could now take up about one-third of that.”Lancashire’s decision to retain a 30% stake in the Originals, rather than the 51% that several other host counties have kept, will enable them to pay down bank debt and invest in facilities but has prompted questions about their level of control over the franchise. Gidney insists that he has no concerns on that front.”Control means ten different things to ten different people,” he said. “We have a joint-venture operations agreements, so effectively, we are running the team on a 50-50 basis. And then in the shareholders’ agreements, as long as you have above 25% – which we do – you get minority protection, which means that we can have some general reserved matters.”We’ve done the JV ops agreement, we’ve got a very robust shareholders’ agreement, and we’ve got good reserved matters. But all of these things are for the bottom drawer, because if you need to pull that out, then you’ve got a problem. The key is being able to trust your partner that you are working together… Chemistry is really important, and we’ve got that with RPSG.”

Tottenham Hotspur’s ability to pull top-level talent in the transfer market has been reflected by their move to land Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United this summer.

The Ghanaian has been a key threat in the Premier League over the last couple of years, scoring 13 times in his two seasons across the capital with the Hammers.

Before moving to join the Lilywhites, the 25-year-old was on the radar of the likes of Chelsea and Bayern Munich – but decided in favour of a move to join Thomas Frank’s men.

He’s already made an immediate impact with his new side, registering two assists in his first four Premier League outings – the most of any player in the first-team squad.

Whilst it’s still early days for Kudus in his career in North London, he has already adhered himself to the fanbase – potentially benefitting from one player’s talents had the board kept hold of him.

Harry Kane’s record-breaking spell as a Spurs player

No Spurs fan would have ever expected Harry Kane to have had the impact he did in North London after making his senior debut for the club as a youngster back in August 2011.

He would have to wait three years for his first start, but once he forced himself into Mauricio Pochettino’s plans, there was no looking back for the former academy star.

Fast-forward to the present day, the 32-year-old managed to rack up 280 goals for the Lilywhites in his 435 appearances – scoring over 30 goals in 50% of his decade-long spell in the first-team.

Such a record makes him the club’s highest-ever goalscorer, whilst also sitting second in the Premier League’s all-time scoring chart – with only Alan Shearer scoring more at present.

However, despite his phenomenal nouse for scoring goals, he was unable to catapult the Lilywhites to any silverware, which led to his transfer to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023 for £82m.

Since joining the Bundesliga outfit, the Englishman has netted 93 goals in his 102 outings, further highlighting his talent in attacking areas – undoubtedly going down as one of the best English forwards in football history.

His move away from North London has left a huge void over the last couple of seasons, with new boss Frank hoping that one player can step up to the plate over the next couple of campaigns.

The Spurs player who could be their best forward since Kane

Whilst Kane was more often the man to finish off chances for Spurs, he also struck up an incredible partnership with Heung-min Son in the final third over countless years.

The Englishman and the South Korean linked up for 47 Premier League goals throughout their time together, sitting at the top for the most goals created by a single two-player partnership in Premier League history.

However, the latter of the pair also departed the Lilywhites this summer, joining LAFC in a £20m transfer – leaving yet another huge hole for Frank to fill in his first year at the helm.

As a result, the hierarchy delved into the transfer market and completed the £52m signing of forward Xavi Simons from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.

The 22-year-old can either operate in a central role behind the striker or off the left-hand side, subsequently offering the Dane a versatile option within attacking areas.

The Dutchman has arrived in England with huge expectations, and understandably so given his record in Germany last campaign, with the youngster registering 19 goal contributions in just 33 outings.

Whilst he’s yet to notch his first goal for the Lilywhites, he’s already caught the eye in his first two outings – even registering an assist for Pape Matar Sarr in the 3-0 triumph over West Ham United last weekend.

Simons, who’s been labelled “phenomenal” by one analyst, has already racked up over 160 senior appearances despite his tender age, with his underlying stats from his first handful of Spurs games already catching the eye.

The Dutchman has already created three chances in his first two outings – the most of any Lilywhites player in that time – showcasing the creative spark he possesses despite his youthful age.

He’s also completed 75% of the dribbles he’s attempted, whilst winning three fouls – tallies which highlight the danger he has already caused to the opposition during his bedding-in period.

Simons’ tally of 1.5 shots per 90 also highlights he’s more than capable of going alone when needed, but he just needs his first goal in English football to help kickstart his spell under Frank.

£52m may appear to be a mammoth investment by the board, but it’s one that could be worthwhile if he can continue producing the calibre of performances he has in the early stages of his Spurs career.

Given the levels produced by Kane in North London, he certainly has a long way to go before getting near his cult hero status, but there’s no disputing he has bags of time on his hands.

If he can carry on his superb start in England, there’s no reason why he can’t be the club’s best attacker since the English international – potentially able to write a new history for the side under Frank’s guidance.

واستطرد: “الموسم طويل للغاية والمباريات كثيرة وجميع اللاعبين سيكونون مهمين، لدي إصرار على أنني أحب رودريجو أكثر من فينيسيوس، وهو حاليًا ينافس على مركز الجناح الأيسر ببراعة”.

They say all that matters is the win, but last night’s performance was hardly convincing from Chelsea.

Enzo Maresca’s side had what should have been an easy draw against League One outfit Lincoln City in the League Cup, but made a meal of things.

The World Champions ended the first half a goal down and failing to register a single shot on target, only for Tyrique George and Facundo Buonanotte to save them with early goals in the second half.

It was truly a night to forget for Chelsea, and several players need to be dropped for the next match, including one who performed worse than Alejandro Garnacho and Filip Jørgensen.

Unfortunately, there were more than a few starters who only harmed their reputations last night, like Jørgensen.

The Danish goalkeeper was between the sticks in place of the suspended Robert Sanchez, and, if we are being honest, looked more like a League One-level keeper than his opposite number.

The former Villarreal ace was poor in distribution, completing just five of ten long balls, and utterly hopeless when balls were lifted into the area.

On another night, and against better opposition, the Blues could have been down two or three more goals due to his shakiness.

A less stressful but just as disappointing display came from summer signing Garnacho.

It was the former Manchester United ace’s first start for the club, and while he’ll have plenty of opportunities, he didn’t convince any of those who doubted his move to West London.

In his 59 minutes on the pitch, the 21-year-old took just 26 touches, made 16 passes, failed in 100% of his crosses, registered a single shot on target, didn’t even attempt a dribble, lost 100% of his aerial duels and was offside once.

In short, it was an underwhelming showing, and unfortunately for Chelsea, one of their other attackers was just as bad.

The bad news for Chelsea is that we really could name several other players who should probably be nowhere near the starting lineup on the weekend, from Enzo Fernandes to Trevoh Chalobah.

However, in this instance, the starter in question is another summer signing: Jamie Gittens.

It would be fair to say that the former Borussia Dortmund gem has not had the best start to his career with the Blues, as last night’s game was his fifth appearance of the season, and he has yet to score a goal or provide an assist.

However, it wasn’t just his lack of output that was a problem last night – although that early miss was poor – it was his lack of any real impact on the match.

The formerly “explosive” Reading-born winger, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, was practically anonymous for most of the time he was on the pitch, which is a real concern given the level of opposition.

It might sound overly harsh, but this opinion is one shared by Amos Murphy of the Express, who gave the Englishman a 5/10 match rating at full-time, writing that he ‘lacked quality with almost everything he did’ – talk about scathing.

Unsurprisingly, the 21-year-old’s statistics back up such appraisals, as in 70 minutes he took just 36 touches – 21 fewer than Jørgensen – completed just 25 passes, failed to play a key pass, misplaced 100% of his long balls, failed to have a shot on target, missed a big chance, lost the ball four times and only attempted one cross.

Ultimately, Chelsea won the game, and that is what matters most, but Maresca will be concerned about the performances of his team, and if he wants a better one against Brighton, Gittens should be on the bench.

Ayush Mhatre is the latest in the list of newcomers who have impressed on IPL debut.Walking in at No. 3 for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday night in IPL 2025, 17-year-old Mhatre – also on his T20 debut, incidentally – scored 17 runs off the first four balls he faced, hitting two sixes and a four. But before getting here, Mhatre, who plays domestic cricket for Mumbai, had impressed MS Dhoni and Stephen Fleming during the trials with his skills and composure.”We’ve had a few players through at our trainings and he was a player that stood out,” Fleming said at the press conference after CSK’s loss to MI. “It’s still very hard when you’re in a nets situation to get a true gauge of a player, but from a skillset [point of view], he was very impressive and a very composed young man, which is often just as important. So both MS and I were very impressed with the way he held himself together for the trial. “It’s probably the position we are in [CSK are bottom of the table] and with the injury to Rutu and the form of others made it quite an easy decision to get him in there,” Fleming said. “The stage seems big but it’s one that’s familiar. We banked on him being comfortable with his surroundings [at Wankhede] and he certainly looked all that, so it was an impressive debut.”Mhatre’s first boundary came off the second ball he faced, when he drove Ashwani Kumar’s full-length delivery down the ground. His first six, off the next ball, was smashed over deep midwicket, and he followed that with a hoick over square leg. He went on to hit three more fours, all off Deepak Chahar, in his short stay before Chahar had him caught at long-on for a 15-ball 32.”I think as a youngster, he batted really well,” Dhoni said on the broadcast after the game. “And you know, that’s the kind of approach that is needed where you play your shots but, at the same time, you pick the shots that are your strength. I feel right from the start he just wanted to play his shots. We also haven’t seen him much, so it’s a good sign for us. Top of the order, [if] you can keep playing the shots, it becomes slightly easy for the middle and the lower order.”Aaron Finch, who was wowed by Mhatre’s “statement” innings, noted his strengths as a batter.”I think the shot down the ground [off his second ball] was extraordinary,” Finch said on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut. “That was nowhere near a half-volley, but he smacked it on the up through mid-off, [and then] he set up for the pull shot. Pujara: ‘Not easy to be fearless in your first T20 game’While Mhatre came in with no senior-level T20 experience, he has played nine first-class games and seven List A fixtures and has two centuries in each format. He made his domestic debut for Mumbai in the 2024-25 season, and scored his maiden first-class century in just his third game, in the Ranji Trophy. Mhatre also broke List A records when he scored 181 off 117 balls in the Vijay Hazare Trophy to become the youngest to hit 150 in a men’s List A innings.For Cheteshwar Pujara, what stood out was Mhatre’s “fearless” approach despite not having played much top-flight cricket.”If you are not well-prepared and you are nervous when playing your first game, you don’t get that confidence,” Pujara said on TimeOut. “But to do that – we say they are fearless but it’s not easy to be fearless when you’re playing your first-ever T20 game, that too at the highest level. To do that, I’m sure he’s done enough preparation. I haven’t seen his journey so far, I don’t know much about it, but the way he batted he seemed very confident. “Days are gone by [when] you walk into bat in your first game and you think, ‘how can I get another game, how can I get myself into a position to get picked next game’, and you get 30 off 25 and you go ‘I’ve actually done a pretty good job for myself’,” Finch said. “But these kids now [say], ‘you know what will get me another game – hitting three or four sixes’. Then you become an Impact Player. And you can put it on reels and it can go viral. That’s what the new generation is all about.”But while head coach Fleming is all about players expressing themselves, he hoped for balance in the way youngsters approach the game so that it’s sustainable in the long term.”I think there’s examples all around the place where players are playing free. It’s impressive, not always sustainable, but it’s very impressive and it’s contagious,” Fleming said. “And what you’re seeing is young players that are feeding off other performances. I think their expectation of how they should play is going up, or at least it has been based on what others are doing. It is creating quite a phenomenon.”I’ll still balance it with craft of the older players so that the mixture of having experience in these young players is probably the best mix, but certainly we’re seeing a wave of young players in India that are just taking on the bowlers from ball one. Is it sustainable in tricky conditions, I don’t know. There’s the subtlety of the game, but in terms of what they’re bringing and how they’re playing their first games, it is certainly impressive.”
