Emery must axe Bailey to unleash "monster" Aston Villa gem next to Rashford

Aston Villa are gearing up for their second-leg tie against Club Brugge, having beaten them 3-1 in the first-leg at the Jan Breydel Stadium.

Unai Emery’s side held less of the ball with 44% possession, taking fewer shots with seven to Brugge’s 11 shots, but generating a higher xG than the Belgian outfit with 1.27 xG to their 1.05 xG.

Emery’s side finished eighth in the UEFA Champions League group phase, whilst their opponents, Club Brugge, finished 24th in the group phase, only just sneaking in ahead of Dinamo Zagreb on 11 points, along with Sporting and Manchester City.

They head into the second leg with a two-goal lead which could affect Emery’s team selection, depending on his game plan. But, injuries could also have a part to play, as the Villans are set to be without a few of their stars.

Aston Villa team news before Brugge

It’s good news for Emery, as Amadou Onana is closing in on his return to the side, having been out since the start of February with his most recent hamstring injury.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Onana isn’t the only one who is making his return to the squad this week, with Emiliano Martínez and Marco Asensio also both back in time for Villa’s round of 16 second leg against Club Brugge.

Villa will still be without Ross Barkley, who remains absent through injury, along with Andres Garcia and Donyell Malen who are unavailable due to not being registered in the European squad list.

With plenty of important players returning to the squad for this midweek clash, it will be interesting to see what Emery decides to do, with one option being to unleash his deadly wing pair who can provide the team with an attacking threat but also ball retention quality.

How Emery's attack should look against Brugge

Emery tends to set his side up in a 4-2-3-1, which on the ball can shift into a 3-2-5 shape, something many of the elite teams have adopted in recent years in their build-up.

Emery’s way of creating this shape involves one of the full-backs being more attack-minded, allowing one of the wingers to drift inside and become the secondary number ten alongside Morgan Rogers.

One way Villa do this is with Lucas Digne providing width high on the left from left-back, and Jacob Ramsey drifting inside as the secondary number ten from the left wing.

However, another way since their January recruitment of creating this same structure but flipping the sides is by having Matty Cash provide width high on the right, with Marco Asensio drifting inside from the right wing.

You can see from their underlying numbers the assets they bring to the team, with Asensio excelling in passing/creative metrics such as key passes, progressive passes and shot-creating actions, whilst Rashford excels in successful take-ons and progressive carries, making those more direct actions.

Marco Asensio & Marcus Rashford for Aston Villa

Asensio has been described as a “mentality monster” by Aston Villa teammate, Cash, after his substitute appearance made the difference against Club Brugge in the first leg of the tie.

In the game, Asensio came on for the final 26 minutes, scoring a penalty, putting both of his two shots on target and completing 100% of his passes (eight out of eight).

Emery could opt to start Asensio from the start, rather than Leon Bailey, giving them that extra security on the ball and the ability to retain possession, which could give Villa the desired control for this second-leg tie where they already have the two-goal advantage.

Stuart Broad living in the present on return to scene of past glories

Missing Caribbean tour may have prolonged career, fast bowler admits

Vithushan Ehantharajah11-Feb-2023

Stuart Broad is back in New Zealand, 15 years after his break-out tour in 2008•Getty Images

It was in New Zealand back in 2008 that Peter Moores pulled the cord on the future of English Test cricket. Out went the experience of Steve Harmison and Matthew Hoggard for the second Test at Wellington. In came 25-year-old James Anderson and 21-year-old Stuart Broad. The pair would play the next match in Napier, too, going on split 16 wickets between them as England secured what remains their last series victory in these parts. A month shy of 15 years on, and 1,225 more dismissals between them later, they return to the country where it all truly began. It’s tempting to fawn over such Origin Story shtick with Anderson and Broad, as per their three visits since. With good reason, mind, given their longevity is a key part of their legacy, specifically a sense they had as much control over their own destinies as the seam on a ball. But this tour carries the whiff of something a little different. That maybe now they are ceding a bit of that control and allowing themselves to be slaves to fate, just like the rest of us. Particularly Broad. When both Broad and Anderson were dropped last March for the tour of the Caribbean after another disastrous Ashes Down Under, retirement came into their minds. It’s hard to gauge who was closer to making that call, but Broad was being pencilled into the rota for Sky Sports’ Test coverage in the 2022 summer, which suggests feelers had been put out.A permanent move from the pitch to the commentary box will have to wait a little longer, though Broad did occupy the couch as a pundit for the Pakistan tour, which he missed for the birth of his first child, Annabella. Now, sitting as comfortably as ever in England training gear outside the team room of the Novotel Hotel in Hamilton, he sees a different side to missing that West Indies series.”Arguably that decision saved my career,” Broad says. “If I had gone there on those pitches I’m not sure I’d be here now.” The series ended in a 1-0 defeat after two high-scoring draws in the opening matches in Antigua and Barbados. “I don’t think it was designed like that by the selectors but I count myself as pretty lucky.”Now here we are: Rob Key as men’s managing director, Brendon McCullum as red-ball coach, Ben Stokes as Test captain and a run of nine wins out of 10 after just one in 17. English cricket is in an wonderfully absurd place right now, catalysed to an about-turn few saw coming. Broad has been a key part of that, particularly as the leading wicket-taker of the 2022 summer with 29 at 27.17.He knows his numbers, of course – there aren’t many in the game quite as invested in the minutiae of their statistics as Broad. “If I’d have gone on the two tours I missed [West Indies and Pakistan] I would have ended up the leading wicket-taker in the world [in 2022],” he says, assuming of course that first tour hadn’t finished him. He ended up with 40 in the calendar year, seven shy of the joint-leaders Nathan Lyon and Kagiso Rabada.Stuart Broad was England’s leading wicket-taker in the 2022 summer•Getty Images

As much as the new environment has helped, in particular the attacking mantra in the field of progress over preservation, Broad admits to a shift in his general outlook. After a period of “waking up more confused and angrier with each passing day” as he wrote in hiscolumn following his axing, came the decision to focus on what was right in front of him.”When I got left out of the Caribbean I changed my mindset to just attacking a week at a time, because it can be quite tiring looking too far ahead all the time, and we got in a habit of doing that. It is so refreshing just to have a crack at the week in front of you and sign it off.”Looking back a year, I would not have chosen to miss the Caribbean but it was a good thing that has happened for me. I never decided I was not going to play for England again but, when I got back to playing for Notts, I decided to give it everything, put my heart and soul into this week, try and get a win, sign it off, recover and move on.”With me going down that mindset, and Baz and Stokes taking over, it has been incredible for my enjoyment levels and me personally. I bowled well and felt I did my thing for the team instead of saying ‘I’ve got to do this to try and play at Edgbaston in July’. I’m very relaxed. If and when I get selected, I will give it everything, charge in, sign it off and go again.”The “if and when I get selected” is sincere. Since the emergence of Ollie Robinson, Broad’s place is no longer guaranteed. He is now as likely to play alongside Anderson as he is to deputise for him. It’s something he accepts, in terms of the reality of the situation right now rather than a reflection of his skills. And as such, the last year has been spent workshopping a new gather (when a bowler “loads up” their arms before delivery). If his usual action has his right (bowling) hand under his chin before coming back over his shoulder, like he’s tucking a napkin into his shirt before going to town on some soup, this new variation has his right hand cocked out just in front of his nose, like a T-Rex about to catch a sneeze. The idea is to improve his wobble-seam delivery to right-handers. The new method is still a work in progress, with Broad having used it sparingly at the end of last summer, but he gave it another go during the warm-up match against New Zealand A.Related

England quicks find rhythm but cyclone threatens further Test build-up

“It came about at the start of last year with the Dukes ball,” Broad said. “it didn’t necessarily swing a huge amount in those first four Tests. The wobble wasn’t getting a huge amount of reaction, so I wanted to change my seam position and the way I wanted to do that was just change my shoulder position.”So it almost looks a bit like Dominic Cork, how he used to have that high load, and used to twist his shoulders around. I’ve got quite an open front side, so the aim of it is to load high, to twist my shoulders earlier, to be able to hold my front side and get the ball to bounce away more to the right-hander. So it’s something that I’ll use against right-handers with the red ball a little bit more, but it’s just a technical tweak to get my shoulder a little bit more aligned to the batter.”Popey spotted it when he batted [in the nets] but a few of the guys didn’t really notice it too much. So I’m hoping that opposition batters won’t be able to spot anything. It’s just a real flow through the action to relax the arms and try to get a bit more flick.”Whether Broad plays in Mount Maunganui on Thursday or is saved for the second Test and a return to Wellington on February 24, Broad’s return will come off the longest break he has had since his school days. His domestic season ended at the end of September as Nottinghamshire sealed promotion to Division One. Then came the newborn and the associated loss of free time. “I didn’t do a huge amount because even having a shower was quite a big commitment to be honest.” he says. “Bowling six overs indoors just wasn’t going to happen.”He probably could do with a few more sessions ahead of the first Test if selected, though Cyclone Gabrielle is expected to wash out any hope of meaningful outdoor practice on Monday and probably Tuesday, too. But there are no regrets for Broad after what he regards as an incredibly fortunate few months at home.”I feel very lucky and blessed for Baz to have let me miss that period away from cricket,” he says. “I watched it [the Pakistan tour] intensely as a great tour to watch, and the guys really enjoyed it. I feel very lucky to have been around for the birth and the first 12 weeks of Annabella’s life. It’s certainly life-changing, that is for sure. It’s incredible. But I’ve enjoyed being back with the group here and it’s been a great first two weeks.”Unfortunately, Broad’s time away was also a period of sadness as his father-in-law passed away after a short illness. Missing the tour meant he was able to be there for his partner, Mollie, and her family. With anyone else, becoming a father and suffering loss might offer a reminder that there are more important things than cricket. But Broad has never lacked for perspective or taken what he has for granted, which is exactly why he finds himself back here in New Zealand, on the cusp of his 160th Test, with 566 wickets to improve upon, and an 11th Ashes series on the horizon.Though he may have less control over his own destiny, with uncertainty over how much road there is to go, he is arguably the embodiment of a team living in the moment and wanting to test the limits of what they can achieve.

Capitals in the way as CSK look for all-important eighth win

Capitals were the first team to be knocked out, but they can spoil CSK’s party

MS Dhoni’s men will need a win from the last group game to be in the top-four•BCCI

Big picture: Battle between two excellent spin unitsIt’s a contest between a team very much in the hunt for a top-two finish – but not guaranteed a playoff spot yet – and the team that was the first to be knocked out of the playoffs race but cannot be taken for granted. For Chennai Super Kings, the equation is simple: beat Delhi Capitals in their last group game and cement their spot in the playoffs. They were in a strong position, but a six-wicket loss at home to Kolkata Knight Riders meant CSK’s qualification chances took a bit of a hit. With 15 points from 13 matches, they are in second place currently – level on points with Lucknow Super Giants with a better net run rate. Now, if Capitals come out victorious at home on Saturday, CSK will need one of Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians to lose their final games. If CSK win this fixture and LSG lose to KKR in the second game of the day, then MS Dhoni’s men will play Qualifier 1 in Chennai.Saturday’s game will also be a clash between the two most economical spin attacks in the competition. Capitals’ spinners have taken 24 wickets at an economy of 7.09, whereas CSK’s have 35 at 7.55. Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav of Capitals, and Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali of CSK feature in the top five in the list of spinners with the best economy rates this season (minimum 100 balls bowled), with Axar topping the chart with an economy rate of 6.95.Where Capitals have faltered, CSK have not. They have got a lot of runs from their openers Devon Conway (498 in 12 innings) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (425 in 12), while role clarity has led to impactful performances from Shivam Dube and Ajinkya Rahane, with Dhoni providing late fireworks most times. Quick bowlers Matheesha Pathirana and Tushar Deshpande have picked up 32 wickets between them, with Pathirana one of the standout death bowlers in the competition this season. That Capitals haven’t done well at home this IPL – they have won just two of their six matches – will bode well for CSK. However, if one looks at Capitals’ recent form, three wins in their last five matches is much better, more so for a team that has won just five games all season.2:35

Review: Could Capitals have made better use of Axar the batter?

Pitch and conditionsThe average first-innings score in Delhi this season is 168, and Warner has said the pitches have been “challenging for batters”. Pacers have picked up 40 wickets whereas spinners have taken 32 in six games. In terms of the weather, CSK will feel at home with Delhi touching 42°C during the day – this is a 3.30pm start. Stats that matter If CSK beat Capitals, they will reach the playoffs for a record 12th time in the IPL. No team has gone past the group stage more times than them, with Mumbai Indians placed second at nine. CSK have had rapid starts in the powerplay throughout this season. They score 9.3 runs per over in that phase, which is the second-highest for a team in this IPL. Maheesh Theekshana has dismissed Warner three times in six innings but Warner has scored at a decent strike rate of 136.58 against the spinner. In the nine T20s they have played against each other, Deepak Chahar has dismissed Shaw six times, allowing the batter to score at a strike rate of 125.00.Quotes”Prithvi Shaw is one of the most beautiful batters to watch. And his time off from the playing XI has seemed to give him a chance to focus on the direction he wants to move in. He certainly had an extra bit of fire in the belly in our last game.”

Man Utd's £47m "pushover" is swiftly becoming Amorim's own Antony

If you thought the Glazers’ time at Manchester United was full of mistakes and errors, then check out how Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s first few months have gone at Old Trafford.

While Ratcliffe will be the man to help fund United’s amazing new 100k-seater arena, regenerating the area around the current stadium, he’s also been the man to get rid of free lunches in the canteen, the man who has made a lot of hard-working staff redundant.

He’s also calling out players for their performances. Talk about being honest.

Speaking in a revealing interview last week with the BBC, the INEOS chief was rather scathing of a few players in particular.

Out of all those players, it’s safe to say that Antony has been one of the worst. Still, he’s enjoying quite a nice time of it at Real Betis.

Antony's form at Real Betis in 2025

If there was ever one player who totally encapsulated the reckless spending of the previous regime then it has to be the deal to bring Brazilian winger Antony to Manchester.

Skilful, yes, dazzling, yes, full of promise, yes. He had even worked with Ten Hag. In principle the ideology behind bringing Antony in made sense.

What didn’t make sense, however, was the transfer fee. He moved from Ajax for a colossal fee of £85.6m, prompting the question: Is Antony the worst value for money signing in Premier League history?

It’s hard to say no. In United red, he scored just 12 goals in 96 games. As a result, he’s cost £7.1m per goal and £891k per game. That’s without even considering his wages too. The whole transfer has been a mess.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

While Ratcliffe was brave to name-check the likes of Hojlund and Onana last week given they are regulars under Amorim, he was right to bring up Antony.

That said, perhaps it was just the environment. While the 25-year-old still isn’t proving himself worthy of such a high price tag, he is at least now finding form.

In the winter, the winger headed to Spain and Real Betis on loan where he’s enjoying a far better time of things. Remarkably, he’s one of the most in-form players in LaLiga now, scoring four goals and supplying four assists in 11 outings.

In the words of European football expert, Zach Lowy, he’s “finding a new lease on life at Betis.”

His form in Spain should, at least, mean United can now generate a decent fee so that’s one problem potentially solved for Ratcliffe.

How does he solve the Onana problem, though? He’s swiftly becoming the next Antony.

Manchester United's new Antony problem

It’s safe to say that the Brazil international became the biggest scapegoat going during his time in the north west of England.

Yet, while Hojlund did actually score last time out, the form of goalkeeper Onana continues to be questioned.

Andre Onana

Put simply, he’s becoming the new scapegoat, the new Antony if you will, and head coach Amorim simply has to sign a replacement over the summer.

It will be a big window of change for United but part of that must be finding a new goalkeeper. This season, he has struggled significantly, described as an “absolute pushover” by Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst back in December.

Since then, he’s not got much better with the nadir of his time at Old Trafford coming against Ipswich in February.

It’s strange, largely because the gloveman looked to have turned a corner. Earlier in the season he led the league for the most clean sheets with six but that display against the Tractor Boys only highlighted why there are persistent doubts surrounding the Cameroon international.

The game was just four minutes old when he darted towards the edge of the box. New signing Patrick Dorgu was running towards him and played a pass towards where he expected Onana to be.

Shamefully, Onana was not where he was expected to be and not for the first time either. As a result, it allowed Jaden Philogene to run past both players and tap the ball into an empty net.

This wasn’t the first time, nor will it be the last time the £120k-per-week earner is at fault for a goal. Since moving to the Premier League, he’s made four – what the top-flight label as ‘errors leading to a goal’ – three of which have come this campaign.

There was that blunder against Ipswich and in January, there was the error against Brighton, spilling a low cross right into the path of Georginio Rutter who was left with a tap-in.

Meanwhile, he’s not been much better in Europe either, something that stems back to last term. After that unforgettable error-stricken night in Turkey against Galatasaray, it signified that Onana had made seven errors which have led to goals in the Champions League since 2018/19. Dismal indeed.

So, while Antony never lived up to his big price tag, Onana has also struggled to live up to his hefty £47.2m fee.

Ratcliffe simply has to get rid of both of them when the summer rolls around. Amorim’s side will be better for it.

Emma Lamb's brilliant all-round show keeps Thunder's qualifying hopes alive

Her 63 trumps Bryony Smith’s half-century in entertaining contest between two sides needing to win

Emma Lamb pulls a six over midwicket•Peter Della Penna

A brilliant all-round performance from England’s Emma Lamb ensured Thunder kept alive their hopes of qualifying for finals day in the Charlotte Edwards Cup following a thrilling 16-run victory over South East Stars.Electing to bat at Blackpool’s Stanley Park, Thunder posted 165 for 5 with Lamb’s 63 the highlight of an entertaining contest between two sides needing to win to have any chance of progressing. The game remained in the balance for much of the afternoon with Stars giving themselves a great chance after an opening stand of 87 before Thunder’s bowlers struck back in emphatic fashion to dismiss the visitors for 149.Lamb dominated the Thunder innings from the start, hitting the first ball for a boundary before tucking into the Stars’ bowling with a combination of power and finesse.Liberty Heap offered good support from the other end, hitting two fours of her own off Claudie Cooper’s first over as the opening pair reached an impressive 50 without loss off the first powerplay. It could have been much better for Stars however. Sloppy ground fielding became infectious and a truly bizarre sixth over saw Cooper put down consecutive caught and bowled chances offered by Heap before Lamb was also easily grounded in the deep. The first-wicket partnership was finally broken in the eighth over for 58 when Phoebe Franklin uprooted Heap’s middle stump with the opener departing for 19.Joined in the middle by Fi Morris, Lamb continued to attack with the England international bringing up her half-century with a delicate scoop shot off Ryana MacDonald-Gay before hitting the same bowler for two consecutive sixes.Lamb’s dismissal for 63 after skying a Franklin delivery to Kalea Moore triggered a mini collapse from the hosts as Deandra Dottin and skipper Ellie Threlkeld both departed cheaply to Danielle Gregory to leave Thunder 120 for 4 and in danger of wasting their good start. But Naomi Dattani proceeded to hit an excellent 30 off 18 balls to give the Thunder some priceless momentum as they closed on 165 for 5 with Morris the last batter out for 44 in the final over.Stars’ reply set off in thrilling style with Bryony Smith and Paige Schofield attacking Mahika Gaur and Kate Cross from the outset.By the end of the powerplay, Stars were 55 without loss and looking hungry for more with Smith bringing up her half-century off 31 balls with six fours and two sixes as the opening partnership shot to 87 off 58 balls. Then came the turning point of the innings with Olivia Bell bowling Smith for 51 before trapping Scholfield in front for 31 two balls later to leave the visitors 88 for two and Thunder with renewed hope.Hope turned to expectation when two wickets fell in consecutive Lamb balls with Aylish Cranstone brilliantly stumped by Threlkeld without scoring and MacDonald-Gay feathering her first ball behind as Stars were reduced to 95 for 4.Cross returned to remove Tash Farrant, caught and bowled for six with Franklin falling the same way off Tara Norris for 12 as Stars’ began evaporating in the Blackpool sunshine.Dattani completed an excellent all-round performance by picking up the wickets of Moore and Alexa Stonehouse with the visitor’s innings petering out to close on 149 all out.
