Kieran McKenna will have seen enough from his Ipswich Town troops on the road at Aston Villa to think they could still pull off an escape from relegation.
The Premier League relegation favourites managed to pick up a battling point at a daunting away stadium in Villa Park despite Axel Tuanzebe being given his marching orders late into the first half, with the Tractor Boys now hopeful they can surprise Tottenham Hotspur up next at Portman Road.
Ipswich Town'sLiamDelapapplauds fans after the match
McKenna will know any positive result that’s likely to come about will be spearheaded by Liam Delap having another lethal game in front of goal, alongside knowing that Omari Hutchinson has the quality to hurt some of the top-flight’s best on his day.
Hutchinson's positive season so far
After all, both Delap and Hutchinson would combine to devastating effect when Ipswich opened the scoring against Unai Emery’s men to silence the rocked home masses.
The ex-Manchester City man’s flicked finish was a joy to behold for those packed into the away end, but the crucial goal was all the former Chelsea attacker’s work, with Ian Maatsen unable to get a firm grip on the 21-year-old before he then played Delap into space.
This isn’t the only time this season the exciting attacking pair have combined to strike fear into a top-flight defence, with this lightning-quick counterattack against Hutchinson’s ex-employers, Chelsea back in December seeing Delap turn provider for the midfielder to stylishly slot a chance away.
McKenna and Co will hope another Chelsea-like scalp is on the cards when a potentially complacent Spurs side travels to Suffolk, with Hutchinson wanting more goals and assists to justify his high £20m price tag and to keep his team afloat in the Premier League.
But, whilst Hutchinson has that punchy value next to his name, there is another under-the-radar performer in McKenna’s camp that boasts a higher value, having originally cost the Tractor Boys a meagre £1m to obtain.
The "remarkable" star now worth £21m
Ipswich, even if they do succumb to relegation, should be commended come the end of the season for the loyalty handed out to players who have been at the club since their League One days, with the likes of George Hirst and Massimo Luongo who came off the bench versus Villa situated at Ipswich during their third tier stay.
Leif Davis also falls into this conversation of loyal servants who have managed to constantly keep up with the times, with a first-team spot nailed down throughout his three campaign stint to date.
Last season is where the former Leeds United reject would really come into his own in Suffolk, with defence-splitting passes like this assist for Hirst becoming a regular trademark move, as the expansive full-back went on to amass a stunning 21 assists come the end of the jubilant promotion-winning campaign.
Davis’ heroics would even see football pundit Jobi McAnuff label the explosive 25-year-old as “remarkable”, with his constant creativity no doubt helping boost his transfer value all the way up to a bumper £21m, as per Transfermarkt. The £20m Hutchinson, for instance, is valued at around £18m.

Looking at the table above, it’s clear that Davis’ value could end up rising far above its current £21m value, with the Newcastle-born defender potentially the club’s next big sale – similar to Delap being touted to move away for a steep fee of £40m.
Ipswich will hope they can keep a firm grip on their star number three past this season regardless of his price tag potentially rising higher and higher, having already got three assists out of the 25-year-old this campaign when making the leap up to the top-flight.
McKenna and Co would be facing a losing battle to keep Davis around if relegation was confirmed, but whether he stays or goes, it’s undeniable that the Suffolk underdogs hit gold with this shrewd purchase back in 2022.
Ipswich now showing interest in summer move for "excellent" £12m defender
The Tractor Boys have pinpointed a 25-year-old Championship centre-back as a potential target.
Newcastle United are believed to be closing in on the signing of an “exciting” young attacker ahead of Arsenal, according to a recent transfer update.
Newcastle prepare for Liverpool as they eye new centre-backs
The Magpies face arguably their biggest test of the season so far on Wednesday night, making the trip to Premier League leaders Liverpool, in an important game for both sides.
Eddie Howe’s side have shown that they are a match for anyone on their day in recent years, and this will be a great gauge of where they are at as they prepare to take on the Reds in the EFL Cup final at Wembley next month.
When the summer transfer arrives, it is important that Newcastle bring at least one new centre-back, with former Napoli ace Kalidou Koulibaly linked with a move to St James’ Park. The 33-year-old is currently at Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, but he may like the idea of a return to European football.
Bournemouth teenager Dean Huijsen is another central defender who has been mentioned as an option for Newcastle, following a hugely impressive season for the Cherries. At just 19, he already looks a top-level player, so he could be a great long-term investment if Paul Mitchell can entice him to the club.
Newcastle closing in on "exciting" ace
According to a new claim from Spain [via Sport Witness], Malaga winger Antonio Cordero is “getting closer and closer” to completing a move to Newcastle this summer, and “negotiations are about to be closed”.
The 18 year-old’s deal expires at the end of this season, and while his current club want to tie him down to an extension, it looks as though St James’ is going to be his next destination, as they pip Arsenal and Manchester City to his signature in the process.
This is great news, not least the fact that Cordero looks set to choose Newcastle over two of the best teams in the country, making it a statement signing. Granted, the winger is still a young player who is maturing as a footballer, so he shouldn’t be seen as a key starter, but he can add much-needed depth out on the right wing, being lauded by analyst Ben Mattinson.
“Antonio Cordero is another exciting winger in Segunda Division. Antonito is direct and comfortable either wing. Quality crossing on either foot. At RW, he’s good at bombing down the line, keeping the ball away from the defender and whipping/floating in crosses on his right foot.”
Newcastle must rue selling world-class star who will be better than Gordon
Newcastle were forced to sell off two of their most prized assets in June to avoid a PSR breach, and one in particular is starring on the South Coast.
2 ByBen Gray Feb 24, 2025
Hopefully, Cordero will grow into a superstar for the Magpies over time, and 13 goal contributions (five goals and eight assists) in 47 appearances for Malaga shows he has some end product already to make his spark out wide.
Lyon, Starc and Neser ran through a beleaguered West Indies to wrap up victory 30 minutes before the dinner break

It was their biggest-ever victory by runs against West Indies, whose second-innings total of 77 was their second-lowest total ever against Australia.A ruthless Australia attack ran through a beleaguered West Indies to wrap up victory 30 minutes before the dinner break having won the first Test in Perth by 164 runs.Australia stretched their unbeaten record in day-night Tests to 11 matches with seven of them having been at the Adelaide Oval. In contrast, West Indies offered little resistance in an uncompetitive performance to cap a disappointing series – their first against Australia since 2015-16.Starting at a forlorn 38 for 4, after West Indies’ top-order was ripped apart under lights on day three by recalled quick Scott Boland, Devon Thomas and Jason Holder tried to prolong an inevitable result. They were under immediate pressure from Australia’s accurate seamers with quick Mitchell Starc hitting the pads of Thomas but the not-out decision was upheld on review. It was only a matter of time before a probing Starc removed Thomas, who was caught behind after flashing at a wider delivery. It was a lacklustre end for debutant Thomas, a reserve wicketkeeper in the squad, after showing grit with the bat and surprisingly taking two wickets with his handy seamers.West Indies’ slim chance of getting through the session was left to Holder, who put up a rearguard of 11 off 61 balls. But he could do little against a red-hot Starc, who produced a gem of an inswinger to knock out the off stump and move to 296 Test wickets.Lyon came into the attack before the drinks break as he eyed his 450th wicket. The offspinner thought he had it when Travis Head took a sharp one-handed take at leg slip only for the ball to have missed the bat of Joshua Da Silva. But Lyon would savour his milestone shortly later.Mitchell Starc celebrates after he dismissed Devon Thomas•Cricket Australia/Getty Images
Seamer Michael Neser also got among the wickets by removing Roston Chase thanks to a superb juggling catch from wicketkeeper Alex Carey, who was up at the stumps.Neser claimed Da Silva later in the over after another sharp take from Carey, who claimed his fifth catch for the innings. The Neser-Carey pairing then dismissed Marquino Mindley to put West Indies out of their misery.Australia’s depth of pace bowlers was underlined by sensational performances from miserly seamers Neser and Boland, who combined for eight wickets in the match – their first Test since last summer’s Ashes.Australia’s big victory was set up when stand-in captain Steven Smith won a crucial toss and elected to bowl on a batting-friendly pitch. Australia’s massive first innings of 511 for 7 was highlighted by a 297-run fourth-wicket partnership between Marnus Labuschagne and hometown hero Head, who each scored big centuries.A second-string West Indies attack failed to trouble Australia’s batters on a pitch with tennis ball-like bounce and occasional movement.Their injury woes deepened when debutant quick Mindley broke down on day one with a hamstring injury after two overs. It was heartbreak for him after arriving in Adelaide from the Caribbean just 48 overs before the match.Australia declared in each of their four innings with their batting order dominating listless West Indies bowling, most notably Player-of-the Series Labuschagne who scored 502 runs with three centuries.West Indies, obviously, had few bright spots but their one shining light was the impressive Test start for opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul, son of legendary batter Shivnarine, who defied Australia’s attack with 160 runs at an average of 40.But their 25-year Test drought in Australia continued as West Indies will need to do plenty of soul-searching ahead of returning Down Under next summer.

Newcastle United aren’t exactly in amazing form heading into some tough games in March which includes an opportunity to pick up some honours in the EFL Trophy final versus Liverpool.
Indeed, it’s been very hit-and-miss as of late for Eddie Howe’s Magpies, with home wins against Arsenal and Nottingham Forest in league and cup soured by losses to Manchester City and Arne Slot’s convincing league leaders on the road, alongside the club’s recent FA Cup exit to Brighton and Hove Albion.
Newcastle United manager EddieHowebefore the match
Danny Welbeck and former employee, Yankuba Minteh, broke Toon hearts with an extra-time winner for the Seagulls, as Newcastle just didn’t have enough in their tank come the end of the 120-minute marathon, which wasn’t helped by Anthony Gordon’s petulant dismissal.
Anthony Gordon's poor performance vs Brighton
This reckless red card for Gordon means he will now likely miss his club’s trip to Wembley, although Howe and Co are apparently going to appeal this sending off in a bid to try and get the 24-year-old back for the final.
Regardless, it was a poor showing from the ex-Everton man against Fabian Hurzeler’s determined visitors, as he failed to complete a single dribble, before being given his marching orders late on after a scuffle with Jan Paul van Hecke.
Away from this incident, Gordon does have nine goals and six assists from 34 games to shout about this campaign, but potentially missing out on the upcoming final against his ex-club’s fiercest rivals will be a huge kick in the teeth.

He will surely return to the starting XI very soon, but Howe’s side would no doubt be boosted in attack more if they had a former flop on the scene who has resurrected his playing days away from St James’ Park.
Newcastle flop is now just as exciting as Gordon
The Magpies attack at full throttle this season has been an absolute treat to watch, with Alexander Isak firing in 22 goals in all competitions from the main striker spot, alongside Jacob Murphy also chipping in with some meaningful contributions next to the standout Swede.
But, Newcastle would potentially be elevated to another level if former flop Florian Thauvin was back and at his current excellent best, with his original stint on Tyneside completely forgettable when amassing just one goal from 16 games.
Now, however, he’s a different beast altogether playing out in Italy with Udinese with his goal and assist haul across 2024/25 to date not far off Gordon’s ever-rising amount, with his own tally up at eight strikes and five assists from fewer matches (25), which included a curled strike hitting the back of the net in December.
Constantly twisting and turning defenders with ease, it’s safe to say the “unbelievable” star – as he was once heralded by former teammate Moussa Sissoko – hasn’t allowed his bruising Magpies experience to impact him one little bit.
Indeed, his form out in France right off the back of his short stay in England was equally as breathtaking as his peak in Serie A.

Looking at the table above is evidence enough that the electric French attacker never let his Tyneside demons get the better of him, with an outrageous 147 goals and assists coming his way during eight largely successful campaigns at Marseille after moving back in a £9m deal. All in all, he’s scored 88 times since moving away from the north east.
Gordon is deep into his second campaign back at Newcastle, with the 24-year-old striving to get back into his groove after all the drama surrounding this red card is over, whilst his equally as exciting counterpart aims to see out his career in style with Udinese.

Van Niekerk, who hasn’t played internationally since September 2021, had been on a comeback trail and had hoped to make the squad for the World Cup, but was omitted from the squad after failing to meet the CSA’s two-kilometre time trial requirement of 9.30 minutes. She ran a personal best of 9 minutes 48 seconds in that trial. She described herself on social media as being “absolutely broken” at the time, and is understood to be considering her international future. Her decision would likely hinge on the outcome of the WPL auction – whether she got a deal and whether CSA issued her a no-objection certificate considering their policy has been to withhold permission for a player to participate in an overseas league if they have not passed the fitness test.Van Niekerk has previous commentary experience and was part of the SuperSport team during the South Africa men’s ODI series against India in early 2022. At the same, she had just broken her ankle and was ruled out of the 2022 ODI World Cup.Among van Niekerk’s roles at the tournament would be to commentate on her wife, Marizanne Kapp. Speaking to the Afrikaans newspaper , Kapp, who missed South Africa’s T20 tri-series final against India last week for personal reasons, admitted the couple had endured a “tough week”, but said she still regarded playing for her country as a “privilege”, which she would not take for granted.
