Islamabad United have signed former Pakistan allrounder Azhar Mahmood as their head coach for the seventh edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Mahmood will take over from Johan Botha, marking a fourth change in their management since the first season of the league in 2016; Deans Jones, Misbah-ul-Haq and Botha were the previous coaches, while Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis had stints as directors of the franchise.Mahmood, 46, previously had two stints with Multan Sultans and one with Karachi Kings as bowling coach. He was also the bowling coach of the Pakistan men’s national team between 2016 and 2019. In his most recent coaching assignment, Mahmood had worked with England briefly as an assistant bowling coach during their series against Pakistan in August last year.Mahmood had represented Pakistan for 10 years, between 1997 and 2007. He had his domestic career extended until 2016, playing as a T20 specialist across various leagues in England, India, Bangladesh, New Zealand and the West Indies. Overall, he picked up 258 wickets in 230 T20 games.”I was part of Islamabad United’s title winning team in PSL 1,” Mahmood said. “The franchise and the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi are quite close to my heart as my hometowns. United have always paved the way and provided a platform for emerging players, from Shadab to Asif to most recently Wasim, all started their careers here. It is not only a great platform for grooming local players but coaches too.”Saeed Ajmal is such an example and I look forward to working with him this year now that I take a new path in my career. I am obviously familiar with most of the guys there. It was an absolute pleasure to be the bowling coach of Hassan, Shadab, Faheem and co in my stint as Pakistan’s bowling coach. I have played franchise cricket all over the world and I look forward to sharing my experience with the guys at Islamabad United.”Islamabad United are one of the most successful teams in the PSL, winning two titles, in 2016 and 2018. Chelsea are willing to splash the cash to secure the signature of another one of their teenage transfer targets, according to a new report.

Under the stewardship of Todd Boehly, the Blues have evidently been focussing on strengthening their squad with younger players, given that all of their summer acquisitions were 25 or under, and they continue to be linked with up-and-coming talents.

Enzo Maresca is said to be personally driving a deal for Borussia Dortmund forward Karim Adeyemi, with the manager trying to pip Juventus to his signature, while they have also set their sights on another Bundesliga star.

Reports suggest that Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz is another option being considered, with talks already being opened ahead of the January transfer window. Both Adeyemi and Wirtz are capable of playing on either wing, although the latter specialises through the middle. As such, it is evident that Maresca is looking to bolster his attacking options in the near future.

Chelsea eyeing Geovany Quenda

With that in mind, it is clear to see why the Blues are now being linked with a move for Geovany Quenda, as reported by Spanish sources. The 17-year-old winger is said to have attracted the attention of a number of the Premier League’s top clubs, including Liverpool and Manchester United, and the report details that he is now one of the most sought-after players in Europe.

At the moment, however, it is Arsenal that appear to have taken the most concrete steps towards securing the Sporting CP man’s signature, having already opened talks with his representatives. Although there is a £84m release clause in Quenda’s contract, the clubs in question are willing to spend big to secure his signature, as they are all well aware of the enormous talent that he possesses.

It will clearly be very difficult for Chelsea to win the race for the Portuguese winger’s signature, given the level of interest, however if they are able to get a deal over the line he could prove to be a fantastic acquistion.

The starlet was recently hailed as an “unreal talent” by Statman Dave for his performance in Sporting’s emphatic 4-1 victory against Manchester City, during which he provided an assist for Viktor Gyokeres’ opening goal and achieved a 7.3 SofaScore match rating.

This season, the Sporting academy graduate has very much burst onto the scene, having already chalked up 10 league appearances, and he has particularly impressed with his dribbling ability. Over the past year, the Bissau-born youngster has averaged 5.14 progressive carries per 90, which places him in the 99th percentile compared to his positional peers, while he is also in the 97th percentile for successful take-ons.

If Quenda continues to develop at his current rate, it seems likely he will attract even more attention from Europe’s top clubs, so if Chelsea are able to get a deal over the line then it would be a huge signal of intent as they look to start competing for major honours once again.

Everton need to step up their game. As most Toffees supporters are likely aware, there’s a gruelling run of winter fixtures coming up in the Premier League for Sean Dyche’s men.

They don’t quite teeter on the precipice of the drop zone, but 16th-placed Everton will know that a poor run of results over the next few weeks could be damning – for Dyche, at least.

The fact is, there’s a long stretch of football still ahead in 2024/25, but Dyche will not last the duration if he does not enforce drastic changes quickly.

The fact is, Dyche is skating on thin ice, and the cracks are raking across the sheet. Everton’s drab football is frustrating supporters, with successive goalless draws in the Premier League preceded by a 1-0 defeat against bottom-placed Southampton.

Dyche triumphed in lifting the Toffees away from the relegation zone in 2022/23, but the club have now regressed and there is a growing portion of the fanbase seemingly yearning for change. It’s understandable, and fans might get their wish.

With The Friedkin Group set to purchase Farhad Moshiri’s 94% stake in Everton, change is going to arrive at Goodison Park, which is going to undergo change in any case since the Blues are leaving their iconic stadium at the end of the term.

This proud and prestigious outfit wants a more attractive and expansive style to lift the squad back to the upper end of the table and perhaps into Europe.

According to TEAMtalk, former Porto manager Sergio Conceicao could be the man to herald the new era, with Everton believed to be closely monitoring the 50-year-old ahead of a potential swoop this winter, if Dyche is indeed dismissed, having been earmarked as the ‘number one target’ for TFG.

Why Sergio Conceicao would be "incredible"

Hailed in the past for his “incredible” managerial quality by journalist Jerry Mancini, Conceicao would be a significant coup for Everton, should they pull it off. Before Enzo Maresca was appointed at Stamford Bridge, the Portuguese boss was linked with a move to Chelsea.

Given his Portuguese roots, Conceicao could prove to be Everton’s own version of Ruben Amorim, with his possession-based and attack-minded approach sure to revolutionise Everton’s tactical genetics in the same way that Amorim is tipped to transform Manchester United.

His 4-2-3-1 formation would see Evertonians at least assimilate his teachings in a framework not too dissimilar to Dyche’s but the actual tactical philosophy would differ wildly.

With three Liga Portugal titles and eight more across domestic fronts with Porto, Conceicao – like former Sporting boss Amorim – has the winning mentality that Everton need to begin a new journey and move toward the limelight once again. Moreover, he has a superior head-to-head record against the Red Devils’ new boss.

Fluid in his approach, Conceicao is adaptable depending on the opponent and willing to tweak his set-up should the situation demand it. This bodes well for a prospective role with Everton, for he could ensure that the English outfit are dynamic and capable of keeping teams guessing.

Such qualities could even see him enhance the qualities of players such as Dwight McNeil and Iliman Ndiaye, perhaps Everton’s most exciting attacking players in a colourless landscape this term.

McNeil has principally been a winger throughout his Everton career but has been utilised in a central attacking midfield role this term to great effect, notching three goals and three assists in the Premier League while averaging 2.7 key passes per game, as per Sofascore.

Ndiaye has taken his place on the left channel, ranking among the top 4% of attacking midfielders and wingers across the Premier League this season for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref, suggesting that there is just reasoning behind the decision.

It’s all just a little rigid is the problem. However, that could change with a more expansive and attack-minded manager in Conceicao. With Dyche at the helm, it’s hard to envisage Everton rising to the level that they so desire.

His fiery response to alleged comments made by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta – whom he claimed “insulted” him when Porto met the Gunners back in March – aligns with the fiercely candid demeanour of Amorim and suggests that he would slot right into Premier League football on Merseyside.

Not that the Toffees are ready to go toe-toe with the likes of Arteta and Guardiola at the Premier League summit, yet the appointment of Conceicao could certainly nudge them a fair bit closer.

Fifties from Mohammad Rizwan and Shan Masood, followed by some late power-hitting from Khushdil Shah, helped Multan Sultans pull off the highest successful chase in PSL history, against Lahore Qalandars in Karachi.Faced with a steep target of 207, Sultans made a rapid start to their innings, with the openers Masood and Rizwan racing to 150 inside 15 overs. Masood was initially the more aggressive foil, slamming 14 fours and a six for his 50-ball 83, before Rizwan also picked up the pace, scoring 69 – his second consecutive half-century – with six fours and three sixes.However, Rashid Khan halted that momentum as he struck to remove Masood in the 15th over, and David Wiese followed it up with an economical six-run over. وقال عادل عبد الرحمن في تصريحات عبر قناة “الأهلي”: “كنت متأكد أن أداء الأهلي سيكون بهذا الشكل، كان يجب على كولر إجراء تبديلات مُبكرة، عندما يكون هناك بعد في فترات اللعب يجب تقسيم اللعب على اللاعبين لديك 5 تبديلات، المدربون يجرون التغيرات بين الشوطين، معظم المدربين يفعلون ذلك، لا يوجد مدرب يؤخر التبديل إلى الدقيقة 75 و80 هي مش موضة نريد أن نتحدث بعقلانية”.

وتابع: “لا يوجد صانع ألعاب في وسط الملعب، أين أفشة؟ هو أخطر وأمهر لاعب في فريق الأهلي حاليًا، هو أكثر لاعب لديه فكر، وأفضل لاعب في مصر في الوقت الحالي يعرف كيف يحرك اللاعبين داخل الملعب فلماذا يتم تجميده؟ هو لاعب كبير لماذا نخسره؟”.

وأضاف: “الملعب في موريتانيا سيكون صعبًا جدًا، الحكم كان صعبًا جداً وفي كل كرة (ملجم) اللاعبين ودفع محمد هاني”.

وأتم: “يجب على كولر أن يضع تشكيل جيد وتعرف لاعبيك، أنت لا تعرف لياقة اللاعبين، تُعطي إجازات طويلة للاعبين ولا يوجد شيء في الكرة بهذا الشكل، يجب على كولر أن يراجع نفسه”.

How the match played outWill Jacks powered Chattogram Challengers to the BPL playoffs, getting the winning runs with a six over wide long-on in the final over against Sylhet Sunrisers. Chattogram won by four wickets, leaving the last playoffs place to be decided after the last game of the league phase between Khulna Tigers and Comilla Victorians.The 23-year old Jacks, who made an unbeaten 92 off 57 balls, not only dominated the Sylhet bowling attack but ensured that he put together important partnerships and stayed till the end of the steep 186-run chase.Jacks’ main partnership was with Chadwick Walton: 69 for the third wicket. He added 35 runs for the fourth wicket with Benny Howell, and another 28 with Shamim Hossain to get Sylhet within touching distance.Sylhet finish their BPL campaign with only one win, with their only other point coming from an abandoned game. As they have done for most of the tournament, they couldn’t defend a big total.Big hit
Sylhet captain Ravi Bopara made his highest score in this season’s BPL, top-scoring with 44 off 21 balls, including two sixes over long-on, one over midwicket and one flicked over long leg. He added 80 runs for the fifth wicket with Mosaddek Hossain. Earlier, Lendl Simmons made 42, his first significant contribution since his century against Minister Group Dhaka.Mrittunjoy Chowdhury continued to shine with the ball for Chattogram, picking up three wickets. He removed Mizanur Rahman, Simmons and Anamul Haque as Sylhet were reduced to 102 for four in the 13th over.Jacks hardly let Sylhet off the hook in the chase, helping Chattogram add 60 runs in the powerplay. He struck three of his sixes over the leg side during this period, and then kept finding the gaps for his eight fours. Jacks was proficient all around the dial, whether down the ground, through the covers or with his bunts into the leg side, and he also struck three fours through backward point. Sylhet’s Mizanur Rahman would rue missing out on whatever little opportunities he got during this season’s BPL, after he got out for his second duck in as many innings this season. Mizanur was the highest scorer in the Dhaka Premier League in 2021 with 418 runs at an average of 52.25. His BPL record isn’t too good, though, and this has probably stopped the national selectors from considering him for the senior side.

JOGO COMEÇA MOVIMENTADO
Em Florianópolis, o jogo começou bem movimentado. No entanto, quase não houve chances perigosas. O lance agudo do início da partida foi uma cabeçada de Kauê, mas que acabou saindo por cima do gol.

PARTIDA FICA FALTOSA
Ao contrário da primeira parte da partida, o jogo passou a ser disputado com mais rispidez, sendo o Cuiabá, disparado, o mais faltoso. Das 12 faltas cometidas até os 25 minutos, 9 foram infrações do Dourado, que interrompia as jogadas do Figueira com faltas.

UMA CHANCE PARA CADA UM NO FIM DO PRIMEIRO TEMPO
Os times só voltaram a criar oportunidades no fim da etapa inicial. A chance do Figueirense, é bem verdade, não levou muito, pois a finalização de Gustavo Henrique saiu fraca. Já o chute de Elton assustou e quase o gol saiu para o Cuiabá.

SEGUNDO TEMPO
CUIABÁ ABRE O PLACAR
A etapa complementar começou equilibrada e sem nenhum dos dois times levarem perigo. Só que aos 10 minutos, o Dourado abriu o placar. Após passe de letra de Alesson, Rodriguinho acertou chute firme e forte para inaugurar o placar: 1 a 0 para o Cuiabá.

TÉCNICO DO FIGUEIRENSE FAZ ALTERAÇÕES E TIME EMPATA O JOGO
Em desvantagem no placar e sem o time levar perigo ao gol do Cuiabá, o treinador Junior Rocha, do Figueirense, mudou a equipe, que passou a buscar mais o gol e logo achou o empate. Aos 28 minutos do segundo tempo, em batida de falta, Zé Mario efetuou a cobrança com muita categoria e empatou: 1 a 1.

VANTAGEM DURA POUCO E CUIABÁ VOLTA À FRENTE NO PLACAR
Mas o empate não durou nem 10 minutos. O árbitro viu mão de Luis Fernando, do Figueira, e marcou o pênalti. Após muita reclamação, aos 35 minutos, Elton bateu bem e fez o gol do Cuiabá: 2 a 1 para o Dourado.

MINUTOS DEPOIS, O EMPATE DO FIGUEIRA
Mas a vantagem do Cuiabá também não durou muito tempo. Após cobrança de falta de Zé Mario, Paulão tentou cortar e acabou colocando a bola para dentro do próprio patrimônio e igualando o placar: 2 a 2.

CUIABÁ AVANÇA NOS PÊNALTIS
Após muita emoção no tempo normal, o Cuiabá acabou superando o Figueirense na disputa de pênaltis pelo placar de 4 a 2. Detalhe para as duas primeiras cobranças do Figueira na série que acabaram sendo chutadas para fora.
