Liverpool prepare £40m+ bid and £110k-p/w deal to sign Van Dijk replacement

Liverpool are already planning for the future under Arne Slot, and are now plotting how to replace their veteran club captain Virgil van Dijk. According to one report, they have discovered his perfect successor.

Virgil van Dijk contract latest

As it stands, Van Dijk will leave Liverpool at the end of the current Premier League season, with his contract at Anfield expiring in July.

The Dutchman is one of three Liverpool lynchpins in that position, with Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander Arnold both also free agents come the end of the campaign and the latter being strongly courted by Real Madrid, while Saudi Arabia remains a potential destination for Salah.

5 potential replacements for Mohamed Salah at Liverpool

Mohamed Salah has been linked with a move away from Liverpool, but who could be in line to succeed him at Anfield?

ByBarney Lane Oct 19, 2024

Van Dijk, who has played every minute of the season so far, has expressed his desire to remain at Liverpool for at least another season, but no contract has yet been announced and the 34-year-old is approaching the zenith of his powers, leaving Liverpool needing to look elsewhere for defensive solidity following the mixed performances of both Jarrell Quansah and Ibrahima Konate.

Reds boss Slot tried to defuse the contract situation, claiming that he was not worried about the trio potentially leaving for free in nine months’ time.

“If after the last game of this season is played then it might bother me to think ‘are they here or not?”, he explained.

“But my main focus is now the short-term and I think in football it is mainly about the short-term – especially if you are a manager.”

But replacements will need to be found for the trio eventually, and now they may have identified the heir to Van Dijk’s throne.

Liverpool target Bundesliga man

That comes as Caught Offside report that Liverpool have turned their attentions to Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck in their pursuit of a new left-sided defender.

The German international, who joined Dortmund in 2022, has seen his stock rise with a string of top performances for both club and country.

Still just 24-years-old, he would be a long-term solution to Liverpool’s backline, with Schlotterbeck likely to still have his best years ahead of him.

And as per CaughtOffside, Liverpool are prepared to offer around €50 million for Schlotterbeck [£41.6m] along with “a planned annual salary of €7 million” [£110,000 a week] in what would be a major statement of intent from the Reds.

The 24-year-old could well prove a bargain at that price, having already made close to 100 appearances for Borussia Dortmund in just over two seasons, while he also has 17 caps for Germany to his name.

Rahul Dravid appointed new India head coach on two-year term

Former India captain will take over from the New Zealand series starting November 17

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Nov-20214:23

Moody: Dravid’s challenge will be to manage the schedule

Rahul Dravid will succeed Ravi Shastri as head coach of the national men’s team after the ongoing T20 World Cup in the UAE. Dravid’s two-year term will begin with the upcoming home series against New Zealand, starting November 17.”It is an absolute honour to be appointed as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team, I am really looking forward to this role,” Dravid was quoted as saying in a BCCI statement. “Under Mr (Ravi) Shastri, the team has done very well, and I hope to work with the team to take this forward.”Having worked closely with most of the boys either at NCA [National Cricket Academy], U19 and India A setup, I know they have the passion and desire to improve every day. There are some marquee multi-team events in the next two years, and I look forward to working with the players and the support staff to achieve our potential.”Dravid’s appointment – made official by the cricket advisory committee comprising Sulakshana Naik and RP Singh on Wednesday – was always on the cards after he sent in a formal application for the position. This was after he was convinced to do so by Sourav Ganguly, Dravid’s former team-mate who is now the BCCI president, along with the board’s top brass following meetings during the IPL playoffs last month.”Rahul’s effort at the NCA has nurtured several young cricketing talents who have gone on to represent the country at the international stage,” Ganguly said. “I am hopeful that his new stint will take Indian cricket to new heights. Rahul has had an illustrious playing career and is one of the greats of the game. He has also served Indian cricket as Head of National Cricket Academy (NCA) with distinction.”Dravid has been director of the NCA in Bengaluru following four years as coach of India A and India Under-19. Under him, India reached two Under-19 World Cup finals, losing one (to West Indies in 2016) and winning one (against Australia in 2018). At the NCA, Dravid helped set up a process for injury management and rehabilitation, as well as training programmes for coaches across the country, and developed roadmaps for age-group, men’s and women’s cricket. The Virat Kohli-Ravi Shastri combine has taken India to some great achievements•ICC/Getty Images

In July, Dravid stepped in as interim head coach for the limited-overs series in Sri Lanka. The series was held concurrently with the men’s Test tour of England, which was helmed by Shastri. Since then, speculation has been rife about Dravid taking over full time after Shastri’s tenure ended.Shastri, who replaced Anil Kumble in July 2017, will end his stint as head coach with many accomplishments. Under him, India became the first Asian team to beat Australia in Australia (2018-19) in a Test series. They went on to repeat that feat earlier this year. India also made a run to the final of the inaugural World Test Championship, which they lost to New Zealand. Soon after that, they took a 2-1 lead in the five-Test series in England before the series was postponed – the final Test will take place next year – because of a Covid-19-related concern in the Indian camp.Dravid’s support staff is set to be announced in due course. Paras Mhambrey, Dravid’s colleague at the NCA, is the front-runner to replace Bharat Arun as bowling coach, while Abhay Sharma and Ajay Ratra are among those who have applied for the position of fielding coach. On Wednesday, current batting coach Vikram Rathour confirmed his re-application for the position.Dravid takes over at a busy time, with India set to host New Zealand for three T20Is and two Tests. In December, India are scheduled to tour South Africa for three Tests, three ODIs and four T20Is. Upon their return, India will host West Indies, Sri Lanka and South Africa as part of the 2021-22 home season.Among Dravid’s immediate challenge is to oversee the captaincy transition in the T20I format with Virat Kohli set to give up captaincy after the T20I World Cup.

The first Sporting player Man Utd want to sign for Amorim has been revealed

Manchester United are keen to raid Sporting CP in the wake of announcing Ruben Amorim as their new coach, it has been reported, as they look to turn around their disastrous start to the Premier League season.

Amorim appointed Ten Hag's successor

Less than a week after the announcement of Erik ten Hag leaving Manchester United, the Red Devils confirmed that Ruben Amorim would step into the vacancy in the Old Trafford technical area.

“Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as Head Coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements”, the Red Devils announced.

“He will join until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year, once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club. He will join Manchester United on Monday 11 November.”

Ten Hag was well backed in the transfer window by the Manchester United hierarchy, bringing in several of his former Ajax players to the club during his two year tenure including Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs De Ligt in the most recent transfer window, as well as the infamous arrival of Antony in a deal worth £86m.

It is expected that Amorim will be afforded the same luxury, and that could see him return to Sporting to land fresh talent, with his 3-4-2-1 system not one that United’s current squad appear well suited to as things stand. Now, a surprise name has been put forward as his potential first signing.

Report claims Sporting forward on Amorim's radar

That comes as reports in Spain claim that Amorim is considering an attempt to bring former Wolves and Barcelona forward Francisco Trincao to Old Trafford in the upcoming transfer window.

Though United would likely be keen to poach some of Sporting’s top talent, heavy spending in recent seasons means that money is tight at Old Trafford, meaning that the likes of Goncalo Inacio, Pedro Goncalves and Marcus Edwards could all be off the table.

However, Trincao represents an excellent opportunity, with the Portuguese forward reportedly available for just €15m (£12.6m).

Man Utd ace Ten Hag called "very good" won't play once for Van Nistelrooy

He was tipped to impress this season at Old Trafford, but will be forced to wait.

ByBen Browning Nov 1, 2024

Still just 24-years-old, Trincao has already tasted Premier League action during a loan spell at Wolves, where he found the net three times in 30 appearances, though those outings were largely as a substitute.

However, it was under Amorim during the pair’s stint together at Braga that Trincao hit the headlines, enjoying a campaign that persuaded Barcelona to shell out £26m to sign him in 2020, before he fell out of favour and returned to Sporting on loan, before being signed permanently.

Having now played under Amorim over 100 times, he understands what the new Manchester United boss wants from his forward players and is enjoying a resurgence in his career in Portugal, having grabbed three goals and five assists in nine outings so far this season.

Utilised largely as a right-winger, the Portuguese talent could solve United’s right-sided headache, and the arrival of a low-cost but well suited addition to the squad would demonstrate a major departure from previous transfer policies where reputation was placed above fit in the starting XI. For just £12m, Trincao could be a very savvy addition.

Arsenal man started over £67m-rated ace for his country and ran the show

Still over a week until Arsenal can hurl themselves back toward the ascendency in the Premier League. The international break has taken centre stage, and the best that fans across the world can do is watch various Gunners perform for their countries.

Not all within Mikel Arteta’s squad have jetted off to compete for their nations for the third of such pauses since the season began three months ago – almost to the day.

In fact, some pretty salient names have been kept back.

Why Arsenal stars have stayed in north London

There’s been a degree of frustration within the Three Lions camp concerning the spate of absences in the build-up to the November international break. Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice are among those to have opted against the call-up, citing injuries.

Elsewhere, Martin Odegaard made his anticipated comeback last time out and proved crucial in the draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, arcing the delivery for Gabriel Martinelli’s opener.

However, after such a long layoff, the skipper’s decision to stay in north London, instead of linking up with the Norwegian national team, was one of great prudence.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard

As the dynamic midfielder recuperates, another Arsenal star has found an opportunity to step up this week and put in a top showing ahead of the next round of gruelling domestic action.

Indeed, Mikel Merino ran the show for Spain.

Mikel Merino's stats for Spain

Arteta was bound to have taken note of Merino’s display against Denmark on Friday evening. Arteta, after all, is Spanish, and his compatriot is starting to grow into his skin after an injury-affected start to life in the English capital.

Mikel Merino in action for Spain

Merino joined the north Londoners from Real Sociedad this summer in a deal worth £32m but found himself languishing in the infirmary until October, having picked up a shoulder injury before he could make his competitive debut.

The 28-year-old has since completed nine appearances and scored during the draw against Liverpool. His combative and silky style brings much to Arteta’s squad, and he showcased such qualities superbly on the international stage this weekend.

Not only was Merino one of the steeliest figures on the field, winning a whopping nine ground duels and making three tackles, but he also completed four of five attempted dribbles, highlighting a mobile edge that, when enforced under Arteta’s wing, keeps things fluid for Arsenal.

Spain defeated Denmark to extend their lead in League A Group 4 of the Nations League, of which they are the holders, and Merino’s performance was crucial – especially as he was performing in another man’s boots, so to speak.

Indeed, Barcelona superstar Pedri was left on the bench for this one and introduced for Merino with ten minutes left to play. It was a big show of faith from Luis de la Fuente, whose team needed to avoid defeat against the Danes to secure top spot and confirm a place in the title play-offs.

Pedri, 21, has been hailed as “one of Europe’s best young players” by journalist Sam Dean, and despite suffering adversity throughout his fledgling career, the £67m-rated talent is one of the most promising players on the globe.

His technical prowess wasn’t preferred to Merino’s dynamic command of the central circle, however, and Arsenal must rejoice at the quality of midfielder they have brought in this season.

A long season stretches ahead, and duel-winning stars like Merino could make all the difference when the business end draws near.

No entanto, Luís Carlos espalmou a bomba.

O ritmo do duelo diminuiu. Fábio Lima deu o rebote, e Gustavo Coutinho fuzilou a rede do time baiano.

No lance, Dionísio cruzou, e Luís Carlos saiu mal do gol.

Keep calm and spread the joy – youngsters provide the spark for Bangladesh

Five players, all between 20 and 26 of age, have given the visiting side a rare day to remember in New Zealand

Bangladesh were desperate to have their batters go about their work in a (calm) way, and find some joy in the process after a tough 2021. Appropriately, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mahmudul Hasan Joy, with a patient 104-run second-wicket stand, did the needful in the first Test against New Zealand in Mount Maunganui.New Zealand are the Test world champions, especially formidable at home. Therefore, to bowl them out for 328 and then finish the second day on 175 for 2 – just 153 short – with the runs coming from two young batters means a lot for a struggling Test side like Bangladesh.”The younger guys today played phenomenally,” Neil Wagner, who has picked up both the Bangladesh wickets to fall so far, said after the day’s play. “I thought they played patiently. They didn’t really give too many opportunities. They hung in there. They were prepared to dig in. They left the ball quite a lot. It made us ask more questions, and take wickets. It gave them the opportunity to score.Related

“I thought that they played really well. Full credit to them. I thought when the ball was there to be scored, they scored. They also left well and defended well.”But, to make it Bangladesh’s day, it needed more than just those runs. Shoriful Islam, the 20-year-old left-arm quick, added Rachin Ravindra’s wicket to the two he had on the first day to get Bangladesh going on the second morning, and offspinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz, very experienced despite being just 24, got rid of most of the tail. This was the first time New Zealand were bowled out for less than 350 by Bangladesh on home turf. That put the onus on the batters. If they failed to build on the bowlers’ work, the pressure would be right back on the top four, who were woeful at home against Pakistan recently.Shadman Islam, older than the others at 26, 23-year-old Shanto and 21-year-old Joy were part of the top four that looked incapable of buying a run against the likes of Shaheen Shah Afridi and Hasan Ali, and were expected to be under fire against New Zealand’s quicks. On the day, they were not.Shadman and Joy added 43 for the first wicket to set a platform, but Shanto batted like the ideal No. 3, mixing defence and attack smartly. He was the aggressor of the two during their big stand, driving beautifully – he hit Neil Wagner, Trent Boult and Kyle Jamieson for fours straight down the ground.Shoriful Islam picked up three crucial wickets•Getty Images

“Joy and Shadman gave us a nice platform. It was handy for me. When I joined Joy at the crease, we just focused ball-by-ball, over-by-over and then on to the number of hours,” Shanto said. “We didn’t want to force the issue. We didn’t set big goals, like runs or overs. Joy batted well, but I think it would have been a better day had I remained unbeaten at the end too.”Joy did survive a close lbw shout off Wagner – the New Zealanders thought he had inside-edged the ball, but a review would have sent the batter back. But otherwise, it was a chanceless 211-ball stay for Joy, who ended the day on 70. Shanto got out for 64, but he had done the job before that.Mehidy, who has come up through Bangladesh’s Under-19 system like Joy, Shanto, Shadman and Shoriful, said that the batting performance had given the team a lot of confidence.”It was a very good partnership,” he said. “Our top order wasn’t getting these partnerships recently, so this has given us a lot of confidence. We have to bat well in the first session tomorrow. I think we have a long way to go.”Mehidy was particularly effusive in his praise for Joy’s performance. “His innings is definitely a positive sign for our team,” he said. “His batting definitely helped the team. Joy batted well, took his time. He didn’t look like he was a new player. He adjusted well to the conditions and situation.”He is a member of the Under-19 World Cup-winning team [in 2020]. He did well in South Africa last year, and also made runs in domestic cricket before coming into the senior side. I think he has a lot to give to Bangladesh. The whole team has appreciated his batting.”
