Trio back in contention as England seek cover for Stokes, Archer and Topley

England have recalled Chris Woakes, David Willey and Liam Dawson to their T20I squad to face Sri Lanka later this month. Woakes has not played T20 cricket for England since 2015 but comes in as one of three changes from the India tour in March, with Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer and Reece Topley ruled out through injury. With the T20 World Cup scheduled for later this year, England’s head coach Chris Silverwood said he wanted to look at “some of our experienced players who have not featured at this level for some time”. England have six T20Is scheduled this summer, as well as series in Bangladesh and Pakistan ahead of the T20 World Cup, as they look to pin down their plans for the tournament.Woakes was a linchpin in the ODI side that won the 50-over World Cup in 2019 as well as being a regular candidate for the Test team, but has not featured in England’s T20I thinking for some time – despite his involvement at IPL, where he has played for Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Daredevils.ESPNcricinfo Ltd
Willey, elevated last year to Yorkshire’s T20 captaincy, last featured in the format at international level in 2019, shortly before losing out on a World Cup spot to Archer. He had claimed England’s second-best T20I figures – 4 for 7 against West Indies in St Lucia – a few months beforehand, and played every game in their run to the 2016 World T20 final.Dawson’s most-recent England appearance came in 2018 but he would have been a candidate for the white-ball tours to South Africa and India over the winter had he not required surgery on an Achilles injury.Stokes is set to continue his recovery from a fracture finger with Durham in the T20 Blast next week, and could return for the T20I series with Pakistan in July. Archer had surgery on his longstanding elbow problem last month and no timescale has been put on his rehabilitation, while Topley was ruled out of the entirety of the Blast after suffering a side strain.Related

The recalls for Woakes, Willey and Dawson means no room for the likes of Saqib Mahmood, Lewis Gregory and Matt Parkinson, who have been on the fringes of selection over the last two years.”With the T20 World Cup only a few months away, this summer is about perfecting our team and continue to progress on the field,” Silverwood said. “We want to approach every series with an influx of players aiming to win every match and giving us the best preparation as we get closer to the tournament.”With several high-profile players missing through injury, it allows me to look at some of our experienced players who have not featured at this level for some time. The likes of Chris Woakes and David Willey are very experienced cricketers, and to have them both in the mix is exciting and shows the depth of squad we have available.”I want our team to play an attacking form of the game. I hope we can continue to excite the England fans with our approach.”England’s players will assemble in Cardiff next Saturday, ahead of the first of three T20Is starting on June 23.England squad: Eoin Morgan (capt), Moeen Ali, Jonathan Bairstow, Sam Billings, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Liam Dawson, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood
West Ham United fell to a third defeat in the last four matches last night, as Arne Slot’s Liverpool claimed a 5-1 win at Anfield.
The Hammers exited the Carabao Cup at the third round stage, losing against the same opposition for the second season in a row by the same scoreline.
Julen Lopetegui will undoubtedly be a man under pressure after the defeat, with his side’s poor start to the new campaign casting serious doubt over the Spaniard’s long-term future at the club.
After taking the lead just 21 minutes in after Jarell Quansah’s own goal, the Hammers had the perfect opportunity to build on the early goal and potentially cause a cup upset.
However, it wasn’t to be with numerous first-team members producing disastrous performances but a couple did manage to impress despite the cup exit.
West Ham’s best performers against Liverpool
In what was a disappointing display for West Ham last night, a number of players can take credit despite the defeat – producing some admirable performances considering the circumstances.
Lukasz Fabianki for West Ham
Goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski may have conceded five goals, but it could’ve been a lot more had it not been for the former Poland international, with the 39-year-old making six saves during the outing at Anfield.
He registered a 70% pass completion rate as he tried to build from the back, but unfortunately, he was unable to prevent the Hammers from an early cup exit.
New addition Carlos Soler started his first game after joining on loan from PSG during the recent transfer window, staking his claim for a regular starting role at the London Stadium.
The 27-year-old featured for 78 minutes last night, completing 13 of the 17 passes he attempted whilst also winning five of the six duels he entered during the defeat.
The Spaniard also won two tackles and made one interception, making him the perfect box-to-box option for the Hammers. However, despite his impressive first start, one other first-team member failed to cover himself in glory on Merseyside last night.
The West Ham player who failed to impress last night
Right-back Vladimir Coufal started his first game in nearly a month against Liverpool last night, with Lopetegui handing him the perfect opportunity to showcase why he deserves to start over new addition Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
West Ham defender Vladimir Coufal.
However, the Czech Republic international failed to shine at the back for the Hammers, producing a dismal display and looking past his best during the heavy defeat.
The 32-year-old featured for the entirety of the contest, losing three duels, whilst also losing possession 11 times – an average of once every eight minutes.

Coufal also conceded one foul, with both of the goals in stoppage time coming from Cody Gakpo, as he cut inside of the Czech defender before slotting home on both occasions.
He was subsequently handed a 5/10 match rating by The Standard’s Dom Smith, highlighting how much of a disappointing display he produced at Anfield.
Vladimir-Coufal-West-Ham
The full-back looked off the pace, getting beaten far too easily on numerous occasions, further proving why Lopetegui made the right call to replace him with Wan-Bissaka.
He needs to be dropped ahead of Saturday’s trip to face Brentford, with the Hammers desperately needing a win to kick-start Lopetegui’s first season at the helm for the East London outfit.

He expects the wicketkeeper to bat in the top three of the T20 side even when all players are available

Mr Utility: Matthew Wade has held a variety of roles for Australia•Getty Images
Matthew Wade expects Australia’s wicketkeeper to bat in the top three for the T20I side as he looks to keep hold of the position that is currently his in the build-up to the World Cup in the UAE.Wade has had the gloves since replacing Alex Carey on the England tour last year but has taken various positions in the batting order. Most commonly that has been at the top of the order, where made consecutive half-centuries against India last year including a career-best 80 off 53 balls, and though there remains a natural spot on the tours of West Indies and Bangladesh due to the absences of David Warner and Steven Smith there will be a squeeze for positions should everyone be available for the World Cup.While Wade is the incumbent there are plenty of options in the squad with Josh Philippe, who played as a batter against New Zealand, a potential challenger with Carey is also on the tour.”Think I’ll be one, two or three. Batted three in the last T20 in New Zealand, batted at six in the first T20 against India then I opened next two games. I can bat anywhere, that’s one my strengths, I’ve batted pretty much everywhere for Australia,” Wade said. “Where ever there’s an opportunity I’ll go to but I’d assume Finch, Warner then probably the wicketkeeper will probably be at three if not open. We’ll work it out as we go but I see myself playing in the top of the order if I’m in the team so we’ll wait and see.”Related

Australia's preparations hit by St Lucia storm lockdown
These days Wade, who lost his Cricket Australia contract in April after being dropped from the Test squad after the India series, takes a phlegmatic view to selection issues after an international career that began in 2011 has seen him brought in and out of squads on a regular basis.”Think every time you play for Australia is a bit of an audition, I’ve never really been a cemented player in the team so it’ll be no different going into this tour,” he said. “I’ve played 90-odd one-dayers and every tour I went on a felt like I needed to perform or I wouldn’t be on the next tour.”As I’ve spoken about before I’m in a different place with my life and my cricket, if I get opportunities to play games of cricket again for Australia whether that be one or two games here or 10 and the World Cup, whatever comes my way I’ll take.”It’s about trying to park that, just pushing forward and not sitting on my heels, going out there and playing like I have nothing to lose which I really do. Used to it now for 10 or so years.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd
If the wicketkeeper, whether that be Wade or somebody else, does sit in the top three it would mean Smith, should he be fit for the tournament as he continues to recover from a recurrence of his elbow injury, likely shifting down a spot to No. 4 with Glenn Maxwell potentially at No. 5.Smith’s most common position in the T20 side has been No. 3, where he averages 39.53 from 15 innings with a strike-rate of 141.59, while five innings at No. 4 have brought an average of 20.50 and strike-rate of 103.79.However, Smith told on Friday that he would be willing to sacrifice his place at the T20 World Cup in order to be fully fit for the Ashes which begins in early December.Matthew Wade’s first tour of the Caribbean was back in 2012•Getty Images
“I’d love to be part of the World Cup, for sure, but from my point of view, Test cricket, that’s my main goal – to be right for the Ashes and try to emulate what I’ve done in the last few Ashes series I’ve been involved in,” he said. “If that does mean not partaking in the World Cup, then we’ll have to go down that path, but hopefully we don’t have to go there.”Australia did not train on Friday as hurricane Elsa swept through St Lucia forcing the island into a lockdown. Although the main danger has now passed there have been reports of damage from the storm which could yet impact how much the squad are able to do over the weekend.”We sat by our windows and watched it pass through,” Wade said. “We were lucky, think we only got the edge of it. Was like a Brisbane thunderstorm for a long period of time, high winds and a lot of rain. That will probably impact our lead-up and training in next few days but we battened down the hatches and watched it go by.”I’m not too worried about the preparation. There’s obviously guys who want to get out and hit a lot of balls for those lucky enough to play a bit of subcontinent cricket and in the Caribbean it’s not too much of an issue, we can tap on our experience and that should hold us in good stead.”
Glasgow Rangers endured a heavy defeat in the Europa League on Thursday evening at Ibrox as Lyon emerged 4-1 victors on matchday two of the revamped league phase.
The Light Blues are still in a position to qualify, but a marked improvement during their next European clash against FCSB will be needed.
Philippe Clement’s side take on St Johnstone this evening in the final Premiership match before the international break. The Gers could be trailing Celtic and Aberdeen by eight points come the start of the game, hence the importance of claiming all three points in Glasgow.
Several changes could be made to the starting XI, with one notable name potentially dropping to the bench after yet another subdued performance…
James Tavernier was poor against Lyon
The captain hasn’t quite been at his best this term, especially with regard to his attacking output. Across all competitions in 2023/24, he scored 24 goals and grabbed 12 assists. So far this season? A paltry three assists and a single goal for the club.
Once again, he was chosen in the starting XI for the Lyon tie, but his display was poor. He only completed 70% of his passes, lost possession 12 times and won just 50% of his total duels against the Ligue 1 side.
Clement even subbed him off after 61 minutes, as Neraysho Kasanwirjo came on in his place to see out the rest of the game.

Was this a sign of things to come? The Dutchman should come into the lineup against the Saints in place of Tavernier.
Clement must now unleash Neraysho Kasanwirjo
Kasanwirjo joined on loan from Feyenoord at the end of the summer transfer window, giving Clement another option in defence.
He made his first start against Malmö last week and was superb. He lost possession just six times and completed 88% of his passes against the Swedish side. Kasanwirjo could even have notched his first goal for the club, but his effort in the final minutes missed the target.
His performance was certainly one of a confident player, and while he remained on the bench against Lyon, Clement brought him on for Tavernier with half an hour remaining.
Despite his cameo, the defender made one tackle, interception and clearance during his time on the pitch while winning 100% of his aerial duels, looking far more assured at right-back than Tavernier.
Following the game, football writer Gavin Kelly hailed his display, saying: “Kasanwirjo has to start against the better teams now, for me.
“Instantly more aggressive with his defending and gave less space and time for wingers to get going.”
This display could give Clement the encouragement he needs to drop Tavernier for the clash against the Saints, unleashing the on-loan starlet instead.
If he does, could this be the beginning of the end for the captain? Only time will tell.

In a small chase, they stumbled to 65 for 6 before Agar’s calm helped seal the deal

Andrew Tye and Mitchell Swepson come into Australia’s XI•AFP
It may not rank particularly high in Australia’s sporting achievements today as the Olympics draws to a finish, but the cricketers avoided a series whitewash against Bangladesh with a three-wicket win in a low-scoring scrap on a devilishly tricky surface. The home side made them sweat for it, too, and when the chase subsided to 65 for 6 – with 30 of those runs having come when Dan Christian took Shakib Al Hasan for five sixes in an over – it looked like they could pull off an extraordinary victory. However, Ashton Agar produced a calm and clever innings to take Australia to the brink of the target alongside Ashton Turner. This entire series has been hard work for batters, and this match took it to another level. Bangladesh were set back by the excellent Josh Hazlewood, stumbled against the recalled Mitchell Swepson and only crossed three figures in the final over when Mahedi Hasan struck an enterprising 23 off 16 balls.Christian’s promotionWhen Matthew Wade fell in the first over the chase, missing an arm-ball from Mahedi that went between bat and pad, Australia signalled a change of intent. Christian walked in at No. 3 and it was clear from ball one that he was going to play his strokes. He thumped his second ball for four and then the fourth over against Shakib, he unleashed with five sixes in the arc from long-on to deep midwicket. Only the fourth ball of the over did not go over the rope when Shakib manage to toss one wider that spun to beat the bat. At 45 for 1 after four overs the chase was almost half done, but things had changed before the Powerplay was over with Ben McDermott lbw to Nasum Ahmed and then Christian carving Mustafizur Rahman to point as the left-arm started with a wicket maiden.Surely not, AustraliaThe tension started to grow, Bangladesh sensed Australia were vulnerable and it felt like Australia knew it themselves. Except for a thumping inside-out drive by Mitchell Marsh, he and Moises Henriques were cautious. There was no rush, of course, given the required rate but it did not feel convincing. Then a moment of fortune for Bangladesh when Marsh’s firm drive clipped Shakib’s fingers and went onto the stumps with Henriques short of his crease. Alex Carey was kept quiet by Mahedi and then pinned lbw by another superb cutter from Mustafizur. Five balls later, Marsh played inside one from Mahedi and Bangladesh were favourites before Turner and Agar combined. The tension was broken somewhat when Agar slog-swept Nasum with just enough power to clear deep midwicket in what became a little gem of an innings under pressure.Shakib’s tough nightAside from the finger-tip run out, it was not a night that Shakib will remember too fondly but it can happen to the best of them. Like most batters he could not get going, labouring to 15 off 26 balls after Bangladesh had made a relatively and deceptively brisk start. He was kept quiet by Agar, Turner and Andrew Tye before eventually falling when he tried to cut Hazlewood. With the ball, he responded well from going for 30 in one over but figures of 4-0-50-0 in a low-scoring match certainly stood out.Swepson grabs his chanceThis was just Swepson’s second outing of the twin tours to West Indies and Bangladesh but he took his chance to make a mark with his best figures of a short T20I career. He trapped Mahmudullah lbw sweeping then pinned Nurul Hasan first ball with a googly although couldn’t join Nathan Ellis with a hat-trick. But he did claim a third when Mohammad Naim, who top scored with 28 off 36 balls, top-edged a slog sweep. If a third frontline spinner is needed for the World Cup he should be locked in.
