West Ham can land instant Summerville competition with £25m signing

West Ham United have been the busiest Premier League side this summer, making eight signings already, spending a total of €144.40m (£123m), and it doesn't seem like they are done quite yet.

Despite huge investment, the Hammers suffered an opening day defeat at the hands of Aston Villa, with striker target, Jhon Duran, scoring the winner.

The Hammers will want to put that loss behind them quickly, moving onto a London derby against Crystal Palace this weekend, before facing Manchester City the following week.

West Ham transfer news

As reported earlier this week, West Ham are keeping an eye on Sunderland winger, Jack Clarke. Crystal Palace and Wolves have also been mentioned previously, but it seems the latest reports have West Ham and Southampton as the two potential suitors.

The 23-year-old is mainly deployed from the left hand side, however has shown in the past he can play through the middle, playing once as an attacking midfielder, and once as a centre-forward for Sunderland last season.

Sunderland winger Jack Clarke

Clarke – who has been touted at around £25m – made 42 appearances for Sunderland last season in all competitions, scoring 15 goals, providing four assists, and totalling 3,623 minutes played.

Clarke vs Summerville comparison

Of course, West Ham have already dipped into the Championship market this summer, picking up Championship Player of the Year, Crysencio Summerville from Leeds United. The 22-year-old made 49 appearances for Leeds last season, scoring 21 goals and providing ten assists.

But with West Ham's recent ambition, there is a possibility they could acquire Clarke, to provide instant competition to Summerville for that left-wing spot, as both players excel in different ways.

Clarke was described as "insane" by analyst Ben Mattinson, waxing lyrical about the 23-year-old's ability as a ball carrier, playmaker, and direct threat. This is backed up by his exceptional progressive carrying numbers, averaging 7.89 per 90 during the 2023/24 campaign.

His one-versus-one ability is a huge factor for his success, combining his brilliant carrying numbers with the ability to beat his man, averaging 3.81 successful take-ons per 90. This allows Clarke to access dangerous areas of the pitch through his own progression, even averaging 4.54 carries into the penalty area per 90, compared to Summerville's 2.57.

One area that Summerville comes out on top though, and something Clarke has to improve upon, is their output. Summerville, averaging higher goal and assist numbers per 90, has delivered output at a more consistent rate. However, this could also be down to the quality of teammates.

Jack Clarke

Having the pair of left-wingers on the books could provide West Ham with solid competition for that side of the pitch, with Clarke's ability to drive the team forward with his carrying qualities, and Summerville's more consistent output adding extra goals and assists to the side.

QUASE O PRIMEIRO!

No entanto, errou o alvo.

UH!!!

No entanto, Ruan Carneiro, bem posicionado, fez a defesa.

Hugo Borges bateu sozinho. Assim, a bola foi no meio do gol. Rafael Santos, porém, defendeu.

MAIS UM!

Rafael Vila fez o terceiro do Dragão.

Lancashire on top after Dane Vilas 189 but weather gives Sussex a glimmer

Visiting openers negotiate tricky passage to cut arrears before early close

Paul Edwards10-Apr-2021

Dane Vilas amassed 189 but could do nothing about the weather on day three•Getty Images

A day that began with snow at Emirates Old Trafford ended with bad light at 4.30pm followed by rain, sleet and a premature dusk tugging at the sky’s skirts. In between those meteorological events, one of them eccentric, another inevitable, we had a day of shreds and patches in which Lancashire established a first-innings lead of 106, only for Sussex’s openers to reduce the advantage to 68 without too many alarums. If Dane Vilas’s bowlers hear any dreamy lullabies this evening, they will concern early wickets in good weather on the morrow. One cannot like their chances with the weather but the pressure exerted by Saqib Mahmood and Tom Bailey will warm the home coaches this evening. Merciful God, something needs to.There are days in the close season when one arrives at this ground and observes with sage joviality that cricket would be impossible. The rain is icy and grey skies complete the wintry aspect. This was one such morning. Friday’s improvement in the weather had been brief. Folk arrived from distant parts – well, Skelmersdale anyway – with talk of snow. Sleet speckled the morning air, sending the already euphoric photographers scurrying for their cameras. A thrush perched outside Exchange Quay looked so beruffled it might have been a distant descendant of Thomas Hardy’s possibly percipient bird.Related

Jack Leach discipline, Tom Abell dash keep Somerset in the hunt

Burns, Foakes dig in to keep Surrey afloat

Eventually, play got under way and things immediately proceeded much as they had on Friday: Dane Vilas pushed Sean Hunt to deep point and took a single. At times one believes Lancashire’s captain would look to keep the scoreboard moving in the aftermath of nuclear winter. Rather like Don Bradman or Alastair Cook, he finds the tedium of incessant accumulation most congenial. One imagines Hunt will be particularly glad we got on the field. A Guildford lad who played all his age-group cricket for Surrey, Hunt took his maiden first-class wicket, that of Alex Davies, on Friday afternoon and nearly 24 hours later he got two more leg before decisions from Neil Bainton when Luke Wood and Danny Lamb played around very straight balls. In a match where more experienced bowlers have been taken out, Hunt can take pride in having adhered to his disciplines. The next wicket was taken by George Garton, who stopped the ball off his own bowling and ran out the non-striking batsman, Bailey, for 24 when he and Vilas were negotiating a single. Another “shall-we? shan’t we?” total balls-up resulted in Tom Hartley being run out by Stiaan van Zyl for 4 but by then Lancashire had a full bag of bonus points. Almost immediately Vilas was dropped by the scampering wicketkeeper, Ben Brown, when he top-edged a skyer towards long leg. The escape counted for nothing but entertainment. Next over Lancashire’s captain was caught at deep point by Aaron Thomason for 189 when reverse-sweeping Carson. It is the eleventh time Vilas has passed 150 in his 22 centuries. Our season is barely three days old yet there has been so much to learn. Brown’s bowlers, two of them Championship debutants, can reflect on their first experience of big school. Carson, for example, could have dismissed both Davies and Vilas quite cheaply on Friday afternoon but instead ended the innings with 2 for 106 from his 24.4 overs. Every inaccuracy was seized upon and punished. In that context Brown’s decision to give his young offspinner second and third spells on Friday, and then more bowling on Saturday, suggests Carson has the steel to prevail and will, in time, repay his skipper’s faith. By September we shall all know more about the matter. We will know more about Tom Haines and Thomason, too, but what they revealed this afternoon was a shrewd awareness of their responsibilities and a determination to defend the commonwealth. The pair had to face a very tough examination from Bailey and Mahmood with the new ball but the nearest Lancashire came to a breakthrough was when Haines miscued a drive over Josh Bohannon’s head at cover. Were Sussex to have been 38 for 2 at the close we would be considering a very different final act to this drama. As things are, a draw is the most likely outcome and the only things a fellow can ask of this evening are a hearty supper and an improving book. Patrick Kavanagh’s seems about right.

Babar laments 'painful performance', Malik lambasts 'unacquainted decision makers'

Babar Azam offers no excuses after his side loses to Zimbabwe, while Shoaib Malik asks for an international white-ball coach

Pakistan’s struggles with middle order were laid bare in Harare on Friday as the team slumped to a 19-run defeat, with Zimbabwe bowling them out for 99. Wobbles in the middle order had been a worry for much of Pakistan’s tours of South Africa and Zimbabwe, but the side had, by and large, escaped paying for it until now. Pakistan captain Babar Azam was sufficiently alarmed by Pakistan’s showing with the bat to warn solutions had to be found swiftly, with time running out before this year’s T20 World Cup.”It’s a very painful performance,” Azam said. “In South Africa, we had chased down 200; similarly here, we should have won this game comfortably. But unfortunately, we played poor cricket and continued to struggle in the middle order. Today, it was not just the middle order but our batsmen right through couldn’t perform the way we expect them to. It was a collective collapse and we lost as a group. But credit to Zimbabwe who came back so strongly today.”Zimbabwe beat Pakistan for the first time in T20I cricket in their 16th attempt, registering their first T20I win at home since 2016. The three-match series is currently level at 1-1, with the final game being played on Sunday.Pakistan have tried Danish Aziz, Asif Ali, and Haider Ali in the middle order since the South Africa tour, but none of them has had the desired impact. With the top order doing much of the scoring of late, opportunities to put the middle order to the test had been few and far between, though it was notable they had struggled whenever put under pressure.Azam refused to make excuses for the defeat. “The wicket was similar to the other day but it was suitable [for batters] and that is not an excuse anyway. As a professional, you adapt to every condition but I think we as openers didn’t give a good start from the top and then our middle order was struggling to step up. The World T20 is closing in and we have to sort this out as soon as possible. The next game we will come back and make a good combination.”With the middle order under scrutiny, Shoaib Malik is one of the prospects for the slot but has not played for Pakistan since the England tour last year. His name has often been floated in the media as a possible answer to Pakistan’s woes, but the selectors have so far opted against picking him. That Malik would like to make a return is well known, with the veteran playing in T20 leagues across the world during this time. After Pakistan’s defeat, the normally reserved 39-year-old took to Twitter to express his opinion.”Unacquainted decision makers need to take a step back; Babar and chief selector need to call the shots,” Malik tweeted. “In my opinion, we need an international white ball coach who understands cricket inside out & grooms our captain whilst giving clarity to our players for coming time. When your management relies on likes & dislikes especially when your cricket is just in surviving mode, then what else do expect as a nation? On top of that, when you don’t let your captain take decisions this is bound to happen.”There has been no official reaction from the PCB to Malik’s tweets yet, but as the fallout from Pakistan’s defeat grows, there are signs a man who made his debut in 1999 may yet be relevant to them in 2021.

Marinakis eyes inter club swap with Nottingham Forest set to lose £8m ace

Nottingham Forest could be about to see a player leave the City Ground despite the English transfer window shutting last week, according to a new report.

The Reds enjoyed a very busy summer transfer window, as manager Nuno Espirito Santo was keen to add to his team and avoid another relegation fight. The business they did has so far helped Nuno make a good start to the campaign, as they are unbeaten after three league games.

The Reds will need to find more options up front as Chris Wood hits his mid thirties.

As stated, it was a very busy summer for the Premier League side, as they brought in 11 new players and let go a staggering 20 players. That is a high turnover of players from Forest, but it could have easily been more.

The club brought in James Ward-Prowse on deadline day, but they also had their eye on a couple of other players. It has been reported that Forest were keen on signing Ernest Nuamah from French side Lyon. The Reds reportedly led a chasing pack of suitors involving Fulham and Everton, only for him to remain in France.

As well as looking at Nuamah, it has also been reported that Nottingham Forest were keen on signing Simon Banza and made a late approach to sign the striker on loan from Braga. The enquiry was labelled as being “extremely ambitious”, but he is someone that was obviously on the club’s radar and may be one they will return to down the line.

Marinakis eyes inter-club deal for £8 million midfielder

According to reports in Greece relayed by Nottingham Forest News, Evangelos Marinakis is close to taking Nicolas Dominguez from Nottingham Forest to Greek side Olympiacos. Forest only signed Dominguez in the summer of 2023 from Italian side Bologna, and last season he went on to play 26 times in the Premier League, scoring two goals.

The midfielder has played twice in the league this season, but according to this report, he could now be closing in on a move to Greece. The Premier League side are at their limit in terms of how many players they can have out on loan, so if Dominguez were to leave the City Ground, it would need to be on a permanent deal.

The Argentine signed a five-year contract when he joined the club last summer, with Forest paying around £8 million and sending Remo Freuler the other way. But given the fact that they have just added Ward-Prowse to their squad, Dominguez will likely be further down the pecking order, and therefore, a move away may be the best thing for all parties involved.

ORIENTAÇÃO A MICHAEL

Howe shares Alexander Isak injury update after Newcastle’s win at Wolves

Eddie Howe has given an injury update regarding Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, following his side’s 2-1 win over Wolves on Sunday afternoon.

Newcastle clinch comeback win at Wolves

The Magpies faced another key game in the Premier League on Sunday, with Howe’s team making the trip to Molineux, looking to make it 10 points from a possible 12 to start the season.

As has been the case for much of the campaign to date, Newcastle’s performance wasn’t necessarily wholly convincing, but they managed to get over the line, highlighting their team spirit and belief.

Mario Lemina’s first-half strike gave Wolves a half-time lead, and given the nature of the Magpies’ rather limp display, it was hard to see them getting back in the game. Fabian Schar equalised with a speculative long-range effort that deflected off Craig Dawson before Harvey Barnes’ outstanding strike sealed a previous victory for the visitors.

The win means Newcastle are sitting pretty in third place in the Premier League table, behind Manchester City and Arsenal, and the most encouraging thing for supporters is that there are further gears to find. There was an injury for Alexander Isak to contend with, however, with the striker replaced at half-time, acting as a concern.

Howe provides Isak injury update

Taking to X after Sunday’s game, injury expert Ben Dinnery explained that Isak was substituted after suffering from blurred vision, also sharing Howe’s quotes on the situation:

Losing Isak for an extended period of time would be a disaster for Newcastle, given his status as one of the most impressive attacking players in the Premier League currently.

The 24-year-old hasn’t necessarily hit absolute top form yet this season, only scoring once in his first four appearances in the league in 2024/25, but he is arguably one of Howe’s most important players, with the Magpies boss saying of him recently:

“For me, I think the biggest thing is would I swap him with anybody else? No, I wouldn’t. When you look at his age profile and what’s to come, you look at his attributes and his qualities, he’s some talent.”

Hopefully, the fact that it was an eye issue that led to the blurred vision means that it was an impact injury that will heal in no time at all, but it is understandable why there would be concern from fans about their star attacker being out for a lengthy period.

Howe must drop 5/10 Newcastle man who lost 100% of his duels

If Isak can stay fit for most of the season, there is every chance that he could be one of the leading scorers in the Premier League, and him being back in the starting lineup for Saturday’s trip to Fulham would be a huge positive.
