West Ham hit gold on star worth more than Fullkrug & Summerville combined

West Ham United achieved great things under David Moyes' leadership, but that ship has sailed and now the focus is on ensuring Julen Lopetegui's reign begins with promise.

The forthcoming campaign will be the first in three without exploits on the continent, having finished ninth in the Premier League last season and exited the Europa League at the quarter-final stage.

But a clean slate promises much, especially given the exciting moves that are being made in the transfer market. While the Hammers have encountered a number of stumbling blocks this summer, Tim Steidten is fighting tooth and nail to knock the squad into shape.

Wolves captain Max Kilman celebrates

Defensive deficiencies remain despite signing Max Kilman in a £40m deal, but last season's issues within the frontline have been sorted out and then some.

West Ham's new-look frontline

It was a pressing concern. West Ham looked toothless in attack at times last season despite boasting some high-quality players, but Lopetegui and Co have clearly moved to address that issue, signing talented teenage winger Luis Guilherme for £25.5m early on and since turning to more established targets.

In arguably the biggest statement of the summer, the Irons have signed 2023/24 Championship Player of the Year Crysencio Summerville from Leeds United in a deal rising to £34m, with the electric winger posting 21 goals and ten assists across all competitions.

It's an emphatic arrival, but not the solution to the No. 9 problem. That, indeed, is in the process of being solved by the capture of Niclas Fullkrug, 31, from Borussia Dortmund, a centre-forward of the old mould, with the focal frontman arriving on Monday evening.

niclas-fullkrug

West Ham agreed a £27m fee for the Germany international, who will add a steely dimension to Lopetegui's attack, which is now starting to look interesting indeed.

It's an attack with the pace and trickery of Mohammed Kudus, the experienced athleticism of Michail Antonio, now enhanced by two very different but very deadly skillsets.

And that's without even talking about the cream of the crop: Jarrod Bowen. The Three Lions star is actually valued some distance above his soon-to-be teammates, the veritable lifeforce at the London Stadium.

Jarrod Bowen's market value in 2024

He's been quite the superstar. Bowen joined West Ham from Championship side Hull City for about £22m in January 2020, his advent coinciding with Moyes' return to the dugout and subsequent triumph at the helm.

Fast forward to the present, and the 27-year-old has scored 60 goals and added 39 assists across 202 fixtures, bagging the winning strike as West Ham defeated Fiorentina in the Conference League final.

West Ham were a day late and a dollar short last year but Bowen was breathtaking in front of goal, with his 20 strikes cementing his status as one of United's finest forwards in modern history.

As such, he's been courted by some top outfits this summer, with Newcastle United taking a particularly keen interest in snapping him up.

West Ham's Jarrod Bowen celebrates

However, despite being Eddie Howe's number one target, West Ham would only entertain offers in the £100m ballpark – viewing the prolific winger in the same bracket as Declan Rice, who joined Arsenal in a £105m deal last summer – effectively nullifying his potential sale this summer.

West Ham supporters, undoubtedly, are not complaining. Bowen is simply that good, even hailed as "unplayable" by Brentford manager Thomas Frank after lashing a hat-trick of goals into the Bees' net in the Premier League last season.

Well in their right to demand suitors such as Newcastle to cough up £100m for their prized asset, Bowen's value is underscored, with that figure actually putting him well above that of his new attacking partners: Summerville and Fullkrug.

Combined, the dynamic duo are worth about £63m, meaning that even by throwing the £40m Kilman in the mix, Bowen would only trail by £3m.

West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen

The Londoners' poster boy has come a long way across his four seasons, and while there has been plenty of change this summer, one thing is for certain: he must remain as the talisman of the attack.

Shakib Al Hasan hits out at BCB, saying they misrepresented him

Criticism centers around the board saying he ‘doesn’t want to play Tests’

Mohammad Isam21-Mar-2021

Shakib Al Hasan has hit out at criticism of his decision not to play Sri Lanka Tests•BCB

Shakib Al Hasan has said that he was misrepresented by the BCB about his decision to skip the Test series against Sri Lanka.Shakib said that the two matches, which are part of the World Test Championship, aren’t of much value as Bangladesh are at the bottom of the competition’s points table. He said that playing in the IPL would rather help him prepare better for the T20 World Cup, to be held in India in October.”These two Tests are our last matches in the World Test Championship so it is not as if we are going to play the final,” Shakib told . “We are at the very bottom of the points table. I don’t think it makes much of a difference. The other major reason is that the World Cup T20 is in India later this year. It is a very important tournament where we have much to achieve. There isn’t much to achieve in these two Tests. I think it is a better option that I prepare myself for something bigger.”Related

BCB to add clauses in central contracts after Shakib's IPL request

Shakib said that his letter to the BCB was focused on his plan to prepare for the T20 World Cup, but Akram Khan, the BCB’s cricket operations chairman, said that Shakib doesn’t want to play the two Tests against Sri Lanka, to be held from April 21 to May 3.”Those who keep saying that I don’t want to play Tests, I am sure they didn’t read my letter. I didn’t mention anywhere in my letter to the BCB that I don’t want to play Tests. I wrote that I want to play the IPL to prepare myself for the World Cup,” Shakib said.”Akram especially has repeatedly said that I don’t want to play Tests. I think he said it again in an interview yesterday. I guess he never read the letter. People should have a clear idea that I wanted to play the IPL even if ODIs were scheduled during this time.”I want to take advantage of playing in the same grounds and against the same players who I will face in the World Cup T20 four months later. I can share the same experience with my Bangladesh team-mates.”He said that the BCB president Nazmul Hassan’s decision to allow him to play in the IPL is laudable. “I want to thank (Nazmul Hassan) Papon bhai for taking the right decision. A player must have the freedom, and his confidence goes up when the board president backs him in this manner. The player becomes more responsible when playing for the national team,” he said.’I will let you in on a brutal truth. When overseas players come to Bangladesh, we call most of them ‘sir’ or ‘hujur’, but we do not see our experienced cricketers the same way’ – Shakib Al Hasan•Raton Gomes/BCB

Shakib criticised the BCB’s decision to hold the Test series during the IPL. They will also be playing an ODI series against Sri Lanka, possibly from May 20, which will also clash with Shakib’s IPL commitment. Shakib said that by doing so, BCB had again given less value to its own cricketers.”No other cricket board holds international matches during the IPL,” he said. “Only we are playing against Sri Lanka. Do you ever see any Afghanistan cricketer playing for their country during the IPL? Their board makes sure the players are free to play in the IPL. If we don’t value our own players, how can you expect us to perform well when playing for Bangladesh?”I will let you in on a brutal truth. When overseas players come to Bangladesh, we call most of them ‘sir’ or ”, but we do not see our experienced cricketers the same way. If the people, board and players do not respect you, you can’t expect them to respect you.”Shakib also criticised the BCB’s long-term planning, questioning the role of the High Performance unit, and suggested that some of the BCB directors who have played for Bangladesh in the past haven’t done much to progress the game.”Not having back-up players is really disappointing. I don’t know how many players have come from the High Performance squad. We have a number of people in the cricket board who have played for Bangladesh, but apart from (Khaled Mahmud) Sujon bhai, they are not too involved. Sujon and Papon must be credited for the 2020 Under-19 World Cup win.”But I can’t find any more people from the board to give credit. I don’t think they think much about cricket (laughs). We hardly talk about these things. Even our journalists are focused on small things. They don’t look at the big picture, like how many players we produced in the last five years.”

Aston Villa now closing in on deal to sign versatile Man City gem for Emery

Hoping to land their ninth signing of the summer, Aston Villa are now reportedly closing in on a deal to sign a Manchester City academy star in a long-term deal for Unai Emery's side.

Aston Villa transfer news

The Villans have dominated the headlines this summer, welcoming the likes of Amadou Onana and Ian Maatsen in big-money moves. They'll undoubtedly be one of the sides to watch on the opening day, as they square off against fellow transfer window winners West Ham United to kick off their Premier League campaign.

Even as the start of the season approaches, however, those in the Midlands are not done with arrivals. Villa have still got two weeks to secure further reinforcements and look to be wasting no time, with recent reports linking them to the likes of Samu Omorodion and future star Yeimar Mosquera. The former, of course, recently saw a move to Chelsea break down, opening the door for Villa to potentially make their move.

Samu Omorodion for Alaves

Before their pursuit of the Atletico Madrid man, however, the Midlands club look set to land a Manchester City gem. According to Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa are closing in on a deal to sign Kane Taylor from the Cityzens in a long term move for the 19-year-old midfielder.

Rising through the ranks at City, Taylor can play in central midfield, left-back, defensive midfield, centre-back and attacking midfield in what should prove to be invaluable versatility as his career progresses. As Villa search for the squad depth needed to compete in the Champions League, such a player will be vital for years to come.

Taylor set for Villa return

Whilst Taylor has risen through the ranks at Manchester City, he initially found himself at Aston Villa before completing a move to The Etihad at 14 years old. Now five years later, the midfielder is set to complete a return to his boyhood club in a full circle moment. Of course, the last time that Villa signed a midfielder from the Sky Blues, it was Douglas Luiz, and it's fair to say that went fairly well.

Those in the Midlands will desperately be hoping to see their former youngster return and hit the ground running to become a Luiz repeat. Whether he steps straight into Emery's squad remains to be seen, however, given his lack of senior minutes. Instead, Taylor will likely find himself back in the academy with an eye on cup competitions for opportunities.

He's picking the right moment to make a return, that's for sure. When Taylor headed for City a few years ago, Aston Villa were not even a Premier League side. Years later, however, the midfielder is set to return to a club in the Champions League and on their way to further success under Emery.

Mitchell Swepson emulating Shane Warne and challenging Nathan Lyon

The two premier spinners in Australia will go head-to-head during the Sheffield Shield final in what could be a key contest

Daniel Brettig13-Apr-2021Among the many things Covid-19 did to Australian cricket was finally provide an answer to questions about how state teams might perform if asked to depart from the formulas they have honed over generations of playing games on extremely familiar home ground pitches. For some, it was not so well: deprived of Bellerive Oval’s seaming surface, for instance, Tasmania failed to win any of their four games in the Adelaide hub, and were twice defeated outright. But for Queensland, the move away from similarly helpful pitches for pace was revelatory, both in terms of the burgeoning talents of the wristspinner Mitchell Swepson and the way the Bulls figured out how to use him.Put simply, Swepson has been the most dominant bowling force of the Sheffield Shield this season, despite playing just four matches. In two of those, against Tasmania and South Australia, he was the reason Queensland were able to emerge with victory on the final day on slow but deteriorating surfaces. In the other two, he took the Bulls to within a wicket of beating New South Wales, also in Adelaide, and last week after returning from a neck injury he was shaping as the Blues’ major threat on the final day before rain intervened.Related

Sheffield Shield team of the season

How is a drawn Sheffield Shield final decided?

Swepson’s tally of 29 victims at an average of 22.44, an economy rate of 2.51 runs an over and a strike rate of 53.5 balls per wicket would be excellent going for a paceman; for a wristspinner in Australia, it is close to miraculous. It also represents a similar sort of quantum leap in performance, given the opportunity to hone his craft away from the pace-friendly Gabba, to the one famously made by Marnus Labuschagne when he went to Glamorgan in the first half of 2019. Prior to this season, Swepson had only been able to bowl 20 overs or more in a fourth innings three times in his life. This summer he has more than doubled his experience of such scenarios, and the results are telling.Just ask Jimmy Peirson, Swepson’s wicketkeeper and sometimes captain. “People ask me what the difference is and honestly I just think it’s his control,” Peirson told ESPNcricinfo. “He’s been able to land all six balls in a row where he wants them for long periods of time. I think about Shane Warne when he was bowling at his best, and it’s a massive call, but he was bowling with such great control there and I think Sweppo is bowling with equally as much control. It looked as though a neck injury had ended Mitchell Swepson’s season•Getty Images

“He’s certainly putting us in situations where we’re winning games on day four, where in the past our bowlers couldn’t get the breakthrough because of flat conditions or whatever it is. But he’s just providing a fantastic attacking option. He’ll bowl at the Gabba next year, he obviously hasn’t got much of an opportunity there because we weren’t there that much, but I think no matter what conditions he’s bowling in, he’s getting the job done for us. I’m so pleased for him. I think it’s a matter of time to when he gets his baggy green cap.”The Warne call is, as Peirson puts it, a massive one, but the fact is that Swepson is actually doing better at Shield level than Warne was ever asked to before playing for Australia. Part of this is the fact that Nathan Lyon has been such a longstanding fixture in the Australia team, but also the hope that Swepson would, in time, evolve into a genuinely match-winning spin bowler who also had the control to keep a cap on the scoring of opponents when required. Though he had shown signs in 2019-20, Peirson is adamant that Adelaide was the Rubicon.”It was this season in Adelaide. He bowled us to victory over Tasmania out at Park 25, and that was certainly the day I thought ‘oh okay, it’s starting to work for him, he’s starting to get it and it’s all coming together’,” Peirson said. “It was a perfect storm in terms of now tactically he’s switched on and knows what he’s trying to do. Skill-wise he’s bowling his best ball every time with control, and you could just see the intensity in his work and what he was doing. It was a coming of age for him and continued all the way through.”He bowled beautifully against New South Wales in that game in Adelaide where we didn’t quite get the win but he almost got us to victory, then he bowled us to victory against South Australia at Glenelg on a deteriorating wicket. So that trip was where we felt ‘he’s starting to really get this’ and then he had his injury, he’s got through that and in Wollongong where it was a draw but he was well on the way to bowling us to victory there again. He’s not far away from cracking into the Australian team.”Peirson has witnessed this transformation and at the same time evolved himself as a gloveman. He no longer frets over a few byes here and there when he knows that Swepson, by spinning the ball vast distances with the help of footmarks and ageing pitches, is giving Queensland the chance to win games that in years gone by would have petered out into high scoring stalemates.”I can remember thinking last game in Wollongong, Sweppo was bowling into the footmarks to the left-handers and bowled a couple of absolute peaches, I let one go that I couldn’t do anything about and thinking ‘that’s the way it is’, and I was able to get a couple of great catches up to the stumps to Sweppo and really enjoyed the challenge,” he said. “Not many keepers get the opportunity to have a gun legspinner in their team who’s bowling with such control and spinning the ball so much.”When someone comes to you and says ‘look, I want the ball, I want to do this job’, that as a captain makes you go ‘righto, you’re the man for it’. Sweppo’s at that point now where he’s really asserting his dominance on the game he’s playing in and I think it’s fantastic. Having more guys like that in the side is only going to breed a winning culture, and I think we’re starting to get that here in Queensland and we’re seeing that through the guys who are performing and it’s so exciting for us. It’s fantastic to be part of.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

That mentality, actively wanting to be the bowler at the centre of things in the fourth innings of a game, is easier to talk about than to live. Even Warne, with all his prodigious gifts, had struggles with the concept, and Lyon’s are exceedingly well chronicled. Something for the Australian selectors to consider, at the end of a season in which India twice thwarted the hosts in the fourth innings of Test matches on surfaces offering spin but not much else, is whether Swepson’s wristspin would have posed a greater threat than Lyon’s off-breaks.Certainly the numbers offer some clue as to the fact that Swepson is now deserving of a chance to be tried, not just as a second spinner overseas, but as the first-choice tweaker on fifth-day surfaces at home. One of Lyon’s strongest qualities – both a strength and a weakness – is consistency across a game. Essentially he poses almost as much of a threat in the first innings (105 Test wickets at 32.61) as the fourth (85 at 30.4) despite changing conditions.Should Mitchell Swepson be considered instead of Nathan Lyon?•Getty Images

By contrast, albeit at a lower level, Swepson is developing into a genuine strike bowler at the back ends of matches. The anecdotal evidence of huge turning deliveries like the ones he sliced through Daniel Hughes and Lachlan Hearne in Wollongong last week are backed up by the fact that over the last two seasons his bowling average across a game drops from around 46 (strike rate of 94.5) in the first innings to 20 (52.4) in the fourth. Swepson may offer something more to opponents early in a game, but as the hour of decision arrives, he is increasingly deadly. What should also give pause to all those pondering Australia’s spin bowling options is how Swepson’s trend across a game follows that of R Ashwin, arguably the world’s pre-eminent spin bowler in the same era Lyon has occupied. Ashwin averages 28.90 and strikes every 62.4 balls in the first innings of a game, but by the fourth innings he becomes something far more dangerous, nailing an opponent every 45.3 balls at a cost of 19.13 runs apiece.Australia, blessed with the extreme consistency of Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood in particular, should be able to afford thinking about a spin bowling option who can grow into a game when the seam and bounce the fast men thrive upon is starting to wane. All this is to say that when Swepson and Lyon face each other once more in this week’s Sheffield Shield final at Allan Border Field in Brisbane, there should be consideration of what there is to be gained from wristspin, now that it is clear the selectors have one of the requisite quality to be tried. But a bit like how Covid forced the early rounds of the Shield to Adelaide and Swepson into the strike bowler’s role, it will take either some selection courage, or a drastic change of circumstances, to find out.

Offer made: Man Utd make £40m+ bid to sign Europa League winner after talks

As the transfer window approaches the deadline, Manchester United are still looking to round off an excellent summer and have reportedly tabled an offer worth over £40m to sign a Europa League winner.

Man Utd transfer news

Welcoming Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee, the Red Devils, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Dan Ashworth have so far enjoyed a solid transfer window, bolstering Erik ten Hag's backline and offensive options. Those at Old Trafford were instantly rewarded for their business on the opening day of their Premier League campaign too, when Zirkzee scored the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Fulham.

Yet, even after welcoming such reinforcements, Manchester United remain without a potential long-term replacement for Casemiro, who struggled to keep up with the pace of the Premier League last season.

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro

Of course, the main name mentioned on that front has been Manuel Ugarte. The Red Devils are reportedly advancing with talks to sign the midfielder, having already agreed personal terms. But whilst they remain without an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain, those at Old Trafford have reportedly explored another option.

According to reports, which have been relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester United submitted an offer worth €50m (£43m) to sign Ederson from Atalanta after talks, however, the Serie A side instantly turned the bid down.

The offer came Atalanta's way during a meeting with Manchester United chiefs in Italy, which was initially meant to be about sorting paperwork regarding Rasmus Hoijlund's move to Old Trafford last summer before the subject and subsequent bid for Ederson was reportedly brought up.

A recent Europa League winner, the Brazilian could certainly solve Ten Hag's Casemiro problem, but as things stand, he remains an Atalanta player.

"Machine" Ederson is arguably better than Casemiro and Ugarte

If Manchester United saw their chase to sign Ugarte fall apart and leave them with no choice but to go all out for Ederson, then it could arguably be a blessing in disguise. The Brazilian played a pivotal part in Atalanta's Europa League campaign, including in impressive victories over Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen, as the Italians became the only side to defeat Xabi Alonso's side last season.

What instantly stands out is Ederson's ability to progress play, with an impressive 214 progressive passes to his name last season, over 100 more than both Ugarte and Casemiro managed. As United look to step on the front foot every week, that ability would quickly prove to be vital.

Dubbed a "machine" by Football Transfers' Carlo Garganese following his display against Leverkusen in the Europa League final, Ederson could slot straight into Ten Hag's side. Alas, with just over a week left until the transfer window slams shut for the summer, he is currently on course to remain an Atalanta player.
