Don't scrap ODI Super League, pleads Netherlands coach

Ryan Campbell fears being left “out in the cold” for the next four years

With cricket in a literal standstill, and uncertainty surrounding its return, the Netherlands team is fearing the worst. This year, they were supposed to be playing in the ODI Super League, the qualifying tournament for 2023 World Cup. But the Covid-19 pandemic has not only forced it to be deferred but also backed the ICC into a corner where it believes a review of the entire FTP may be necessary. In case one of those measures involves scrapping the Super League entirely, then, according to their head coach, Ryan Campbell, the Netherlands will be “out in the cold” for the next four years. Before the world was rocked by Covid-19, the Dutch were guaranteed 24 ODIs over the next two years following their success in the World Cricket League Championship in 2017, which confirmed their spot in the 13-team Super League. But that is now up in the air after a decision made at the ICC chief executives committee meeting last week to conduct and extensive review of the existing calendar.”We worked bloody hard to get it to become part of this 13-team competition,” Campbell told ESPNcricinfo. “If you think about it, the day that we won against Namibia [in December 2017] and became the 13th team, we had to wait for the Super League to be announced and when it was going to be. Then they announced what was going to happen to the World Cricket League and the World [League Two] has been started and they’ve played a lot of rounds and we’re still waiting to play ODI cricket for the Super League.”You can imagine all the frustration if, all of a sudden, all the countries who have all the money then turn around and say, ‘Oh no, we need to play our own home series and make more money and leave us out,’ because we literally would be out in the cold.”Campbell said it would be more than just a “mistake” to scrap the Super League and ask the Netherlands to wait possibly the length of a whole World Cup cycle (four years) to play ODIs again.”We can’t rejoin the World Cricket League because that’s already well in advance, and if we can’t play the Super League… Can you imagine leaving a country like us which has worked bloody hard and I think everyone would agree, we’re a good team, to play zero ODI cricket [sic, Netherlands played two ODIs each against Nepal and Zimbabwe in 2018 & 2019] for a period that would stretch to about four years? That’s not just a mistake. That’s almost criminal. So let’s hope that common sense prevails and we go, ‘We’re gonna stick to the Super League.’ It was brought up for a very good reason, to give credence to ODI cricket, and let’s work it out. I just hope people don’t forget about the Dutch.”Captain Pieter Seelaar celebrates after his first wicket of the day•Peter Della Penna

The Dutch government recently announced that all professional sport in the country was suspended until September 1. It means that Netherlands’ first series as part of the Super League, a three-match slate hosting Pakistan in July, has been shelved. Visits from New Zealand for a T20I as well as an ODI series against USA, Oman and Namibia have also been scrapped.”This year was supposed to be a very exciting year for Dutch cricket but now we don’t know anything,” Campbell said. “The first chance that we may be able to play is [the ODI tour to] Zimbabwe in September.”Netherlands will have to host four teams before the Super League ends in March 2022. Three of them – England, Ireland and West Indies – are all set to visit in 2021. That just leaves the postponed Pakistan series from this summer and Campbell wants to do all he can to make sure it happens. “If it means we have to go to Pakistan, then we’ll do it. We’re willing to go wherever we need to go.”The Netherlands were due to have a training camp in Spain in early March before heading to Namibia for a six-match ODI and T20I tour at the end of the month, both of which were cancelled as the pandemic spread. The Namibia tour was meant to kickstart their 2020 campaign culminating in a T20 World Cup appearance in October.Campbell is in contact with Namibia coach Pierre de Bruyn with a view to facilitate some cricket once border restrictions are lifted.”If that means we just jump on a plane and go somewhere to play… I’m talking to Pierre de Bruyn, I’m talking to my mates in Hong Kong,” Campbell said of the country he played for in the 2016 T20 World Cup. “They understand how to deal with issues. They’ve been through SARS and been through this. Going to Hong Kong might be an option for us. If the World Cup proceeds on time, then we’ll be ready. If it’s delayed, then we’ll proceed with other plans.”

Arsenal hit gold on "extraordinary" star who’s now worth as much as Raya

Since becoming the manager of Arsenal in December 2019, Mikel Arteta has overseen several transfer windows, which have all had varying degrees of success. In total, the Spaniard has spent around £700m.

Some of the success stories include the likes of Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice. The Norweigan midfielder joined Arsenal on a permanent basis from Real Madrid, after an initial loan move to the Emirates Stadium in a deal worth roughly £30m, in August 2021.

England international Rice, who has now captained his country, signed for the Gunners in a club-record deal which saw him move from West Ham to the North London club for £105m. It is fair to say both deals have been a success so far.

Meanwhile, some have not been quite as good. The likes of Nuno Tavares, who Arsenal signed from Benfica for £8m in 2021, has not worked out for either party with the full-back spending two consecutive seasons out on loan. Another in Pablo Mari, who cost £8m, is no longer at the club.

However, there is one player whom Arteta brought into the club in January 2023, who has ended up becoming an integral player for the Gunners during his time at the Emirates Stadium.

Jakub Kiwior’s stats in 2024

The player in question here is Polish international defender Jakub Kiwior, who has become an important player under the Spaniard this season, as Arsenal looked to beat Manchester City to the Premier League title.

The 24-year-old defender has played 30 times in all competitions for the Gunners this season, with 20 of those appearances coming in the top flight, and seven in the Champions League, a competition that Arsenal were eliminated from in the quarter-final, by Bayern Munich.

Kiwior has also chipped in with some handy goal involvements this season. The Poland international, who is likely going to go to Euro 2024, went on a run of four goals and assists in five Premier League games across February and March, which included finding the back of the net against Newcastle in a 4-1 victory at home.

Competition for a place at left-back for the Gunners this season has been high, although Arteta has often struggled to find the right formula for that side. Aside from Kiwior, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Takehiro Tomiyasu have played at left-back this season.

Stats from Transfermarkt.

Despite this competition for places, Kiwior has put in some big performances across the season, something which has seen a spike in his market value going into the 2024 summer transfer window.

Kiwior’s market value in 2024

According to the market value tool by CIES Football Observatory, Kiwior has seen his transfer value rise to £34m, which is a sizeable increase compared to the sum that Arsenal paid for him in January 2023.

Indeed, the Gunners paid Kiwior’s former club Spezia £20m to acquire his services, seeing an impressive increase of £14m on his current transfer market value. This certainly reflects Kiwior’s consistent performances at left-back this season.

In fact, with that increase in his transfer value, Kiwior is now valued the same as some of Arsenal’s most important players.

Specifically, he shares the same value as the likes of Leandro Trossard and David Raya, who are also worth £34m, whilst fellow left-backs Tomiyasu and Zinchenko are valued at considerably less, at just £17m.

Arsenal winger Leandro Trossard.

Both of those players have been particularly key for Arteta this term, Trossard notably scoring 17 goals in all competitions and Raya taking home the Premier League's Golden Glove award for the most clean sheets.

Should Arsenal wish to move Kiwior on this summer, it would be a deal which they can likely make a profit from. Whilst a transfer seems highly unlikely given Kiwior’s impressive season, it is certainly a deal Arsenal may consider if they can strengthen at left-back as a result of a departure.

Without a doubt, the deal to bring the defender in can be seen as a success from Arsenal. He was described as "extraordinary" by Poland teammate Robert Lewandowski, and this season he has shown why. Kiwior's cost, performances this season and subsequent rise in transfer value are testament to that, and overall it has been a good piece of business by the Gunners.

Arsenal hit the jackpot with a "warrior" who's now worth 2x more than Son

The fan favourite has proven a lot of people wrong.

VASCO MELHORA E EQUILIBRA A PARTIDA ANTES DO INTERVALO

Farewell to Joe Denly, and a Test career turned inside out

Dropped batsman set to finish as he began, one match into a losing campaign against West Indies

Andrew Miller15-Jul-2020In the course of his long and not-entirely-lustrous career, Joe Denly has come to know all about being on the outside looking in – he spent nine years and an England-record 384 matches in the wilderness, after all, before his remarkable recall in Sri Lanka in 2018. For the next two weeks in Manchester, however, he can brace for something of the inverse experience – a wistful, poignant period of being on the inside looking out.Inside England’s bio-secure bubble at Emirates Old Trafford, looking out on his team-mates as they move on without him. Inside the team environment, for now, but looking out towards his new life as a former international cricketer – the status that will surely be conferred on him for good this time, after his run of 15 consecutive Tests ended as it had begun, one Test into a losing campaign against West Indies.ALSO READ: Stubborn Smith staking reputation on Buttler’s Test careerNever say never, you might argue. The door is not closed, as Joe Root insisted, but that’s surely only because to open it would risk allowing a series-threatening lurgy to breach the team’s inner sanctum. At the age of 34, and with the rising star Dan Lawrence already straining for the next opening in the team, there can be no way back from here.Instead, it seems that Denly’s final innings against West Indies last week will stand as testimony to every attribute – good, bad and infuriating – that he brought to a doughty but ultimately inadequate Test career. On Saturday at the Ageas Bowl, Denly was faced, not for the first time, with reinvigorating a failing England batting display. He showed grit in abundance as he settled in for another of his long hauls. But then, with the hardest work done, a flaccid clip to midwicket off the spin of Roston Chase meant that he bowed out for the 28th and final time with 29 from 70 balls – barely half a point shy of his final Test average of 29.53, and just five balls short of his mean stay at the wicket. There have been other, more lauded, Test batsmen who’ve averaged worse than that – Mark Ramprakash (27.32) and Moeen Ali (28.97) among them, while Graeme Hick (31.32) and the still unimpeachable Jos Buttler (31.46) are only a tick above.Joe Denly during a practice session with Zak Crawley in the background•Getty Images

A degree of mockery is inevitable, not least because of the close attentions Denly received from his former Kent team-mate and chief selector, Ed Smith, who talked him up as a “genius” prior to his Sri Lanka recall and tried so hard to crowbar him into England’s World Cup plans too. But Denly’s durability deserves to be celebrated with something more than just an ironic cheer. For history may record his highest Test score as 94, but it would be remiss to ignore his haul of nine “Denturies” in the space of 13 innings: stays of 100 balls or more that have entered a certain niche of cricket folklore, much as the “Cowan”, of Australian Ed fame, did during Michael Clarke’s rebuilding years of 2012-13.For that has been Denly’s fate in the course of a cross-over era for English cricket. Consider the chaos that he was asked to help sweep up on debut in the Caribbean 18 months ago – England had just been bowled out for 77 in the first Test in Barbados, losing nine wickets in a single session. And if that was bad, then at least it was a slight improvement on the ten-in-a-session that they had squandered at Auckland, Dhaka and Nottingham in the preceding seasons. The Test team was rudderless. Alastair Cook was long gone, the one-day stars were preoccupied with staying in character for the fast-approaching World Cup, and though England in theory had the most awesome lower-middle order in the game, with every man-jack from 5 to 9 considering himself an allrounder, there was no hope of them getting a toe-hold in any contest if the team was 30 for 3 in every innings. What England needed in that period, more desperately even than runs, was time. A chance to take a breath, whether that was the middle-order themselves, or England’s seamers who were getting justifiably sick of having their feet up for barely half a day at a time. And Denly, with the unglamorous grit of the seasoned pro, was able to oblige. In a five-month zenith between August 2019 and January this year, Denly evolved into a batting barnacle straight out of Chris Tavare’s playbook. It started most famously in the second innings of the Ashes Test at Leeds, where Denly’s dour, uncelebrated but ultimately priceless 50 from 155 balls provided the grit for Ben Stokes’ Headingley oyster. The pair did not share so much as a single delivery in that historic second innings – instead they crossed in the outfield after Denly’s dismissal in the 60th over of England’s innings. And yet, by enduring for that long, and in helping to gnaw 141 runs out of an improbable victory target of 359, he did what few England No.3s had managed since the demise of Jonathan Trott. He gave England’s middle order a rare chance to bed in before the new ball, and flourish thereafter. And more recently, his efforts gave England’s next big thing the leeway to blossom too. By drawing the heat away from Ollie Pope in the early months of his return to the side, Denly allowed him to settle into the team at No. 6, Ricky Ponting-style, rather than leave him to become yet another sacrifice to the team’s waning standards in the top three. That’ll be Pope’s berth soon enough, you sense. But doing things in a rush has been England’s downfall in Tests for far too many seasons now.”‘It’s never an easy decision to lose someone from the team,” said Root on the eve of the Test. “Joe has done a brilliant job over a period of time for us and I suppose he’s helped show our identity as a side and the way we want to play moving forward. He’s been a big part of that by batting long periods of time and laying the platform for the middle order to go on and make big scores.”That much is true, and at least on this occasion, Denly will depart with some gratitude ringing in his ears – unlike his experience back in 2010, when he was dumped on the eve of the World T20 in the Caribbean, and had to look on from the outside as England lifted their maiden global trophy. He spent the rest of the decade presuming he’d never get another chance. At least this time he gets to finish as an insider.

Craig McMillan named Bangladesh batting consultant for Sri Lanka tour

Former New Zealand batsman Craig McMillan has been appointed as Bangladesh’s batting consultant for their upcoming tour to Sri Lanka. He takes over from Neil McKenzie who had resigned on Thursday. The BCB stated that McMillan will work with the Bangladesh side only for the Sri Lanka series although Akram Khan, the cricket operations chairman, had said recently that the board is looking for a permanent batting coach.McMillan had served as New Zealand batting coach from 2014 to the 2019 World Cup before taking up an IPL role with Kings XI Punjab. McMillan had also worked with Canterbury in Middlesex in the past.ALSO READ: Neil McKenzie resigns as Bangladesh batting coachThe BCB wanted McKenzie to fulfill the role for the Test series in Sri Lanka, even though he was predominantly Bangladesh’s white-ball coach, but he pulled out, citing family reasons.McKenzie was appointed as Bangladesh’s batting consultant in July 2018 under Steve Rhodes, and was one of the few survivors in the coaching staff after Bangladesh’s early exit from the 2019 World Cup. McKenzie became an effective instructor and has often been credited by many Bangladesh batsmen for their progress in ODIs and T20Is.Bangladesh will play three Tests in Sri Lanka, the first of which begins from October 24. The squad is set to leave for Colombo a month earlier to complete the mandatory quarantine before training.

Everton eyeing move for PL gem who could be Anthony Gordon 2.0

Despite excelling defensively under boss Sean Dyche during the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, Everton have struggled within the attacking third to produce quality on a regular basis.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucoure both notched up seven goals in the league, but endured droughts throughout the campaign, with the latter failing to score for over four months – a period that saw the club pick up just one win in 15 outings.

The Toffees only managed a tally of 40 goals in their 38 Premier League matches, with only bottom club Sheffield United producing a total fewer than Dyche’s side.

They desperately need reinforcements in the final third but will need to act in a sensible manner to prevent breaching the Premier League’s strict PSR rules for a third time in the last 12 months.

Financial Fair Play: What is PSR, how does it work and who's in trouble?

Leicester City have become the latest club charged with an alleged PSR breach, but what could happen next?

ByStephan Georgiou Apr 16, 2024

Outgoings will undoubtedly be the focus this summer, but the club should also target a forward, with the Toffees already eyeing up one player to improve the goalscoring situation at Goodison Park.

Everton interested in a talented youngster

According to the Daily Mail, Everton are interested in signing Newcastle United youngster Yankuba Minteh this summer, after the Gambian impressed away from St James’ Park this season.

Yankuba Minteh for Feyenoord

The 19-year-old has scored ten goals and provided five assists in his 27 appearances for Arne Slot's Feyenoord in the Eredivisie, as he looks to gain experience ahead of a potential first-team spot for Newcastle next season.

However, despite his stellar campaign in the Netherlands, Eddie Howe’s side, like the Toffees, are enduring their own FFP worries and may look to cash in on Minteh this summer despite never making an appearance for the Magpies’ first team.

The Telegraph's Luke Edwards has previously stated that Newcastle could look to move the forward on in the summer to try and combat their FFP and PSR situation, with Everton looking to take advantage and secure a player capable of improving the Toffees’ forward line tenfold.

Minteh could become Everton’s next Anthony Gordon

Anthony Gordon is arguably the best player in even years to come out of the club’s academy, featuring in the first team before departing for a colossal £45m transfer fee in 2023.

Anthony Gordon.

He’s since excelled in the Premier League under Howe, reaching double figures in goals and assists for the first time in his professional career, subsequently now named in England's provisional squad for the Euros.

It might be a far-fetched comparison, but when delving into the duo’s respective stats from 2023/24, there’s real evidence that Minteh could follow in Gordon’s footsteps at Goodison.

Yankuba Minteh on loan at Feyenoord

Whilst he’s featured in a lower-quality division, Minteh, who’s been described as a “jewel” by scout Jacek Kulig, has dominated the former Toffees forward, demonstrating the quality he possesses at his tender age.

The Gambian has been influential under soon-to-be Liverpool boss Slot, averaging 7.9 progressive carries and 3.7 successful take-ons, with Gordon unable to get near the youngster with his respective tallies of just 4.3 and 1.7.

He’s also created more opportunities in the final third, creating 5.8 shot-creating actions and averaging 3.5 shots per 90, with Gordon averaging one less per match in each category.

Minteh likes to feature on the opposite side to Gordon, but his attacking stats and ability to cut inside onto his stronger foot, make him a great option for Dyche on the right-hand side and one that could certainly replicate Gordon's time on Merseyside.

Whilst he’s unproven in the Premier League, the club must take a plunge on Minteh this summer, with the attacker potentially available at a cheaper price than many other attackers of his quality.

He would undoubtedly improve Dyche’s attack, whilst providing the opportunity to make the club a hefty profit in the years ahead – making the Toffees more sustainable and helping their current financial situation.
