Spurs lining up new Son partner in £50m "Aldi Jude Bellingham’

Tottenham Hotspur might have been one of the busiest Premier League outfits in the transfer market since Ange Postecoglou was selected as manager last year, but further work is expected after the 2023/24 campaign concludes.

A blazing start to a new chapter had left a giddying feeling among the fans, but the plain realities that a long and winding season has presented have served as a better measure of the squad's current level.

While fifth-placed Spurs are hopeful of qualifying for the Champions League, last weekend's 4-0 thrashing against Newcastle United has allowed Aston Villa to create a three-point lead in the top four.

Micky van de Ven for Tottenham

With English sides dropping like flies in Europe, hopes of a fifth place in the continent's elite club competition next term through the co-efficient rankings look decidedly slender.

Tottenham will need to fight hard in the Premier League to leapfrog Unai Emery's side, increasing chances of signing top targets.

Spurs lining up Premier League star

According to Football Insider, Tottenham are preparing to launch a bid to sign Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White this summer, though will face concerted competition from Premier League rivals Newcastle United.

With Tottenham said to be in pole position for the 24-year-old's signature, however, Postecoglou could add a perfect additional dimension to his team ahead of a likely return to European competition next season.

Nottingham Forest player Morgan Gibbs-White

Arsenal have also registered an interest in the player, with reports suggesting that a bid of £50m would be enough to tempt the City Ground side to sell.

Morgan Gibbs-White's season in numbers

Forest signed Gibbs-White from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a deal worth £42.5m in 2022, with the talented midfielder's move raising a few eyebrows.

Still, he'd established his technical quality and potential on loan at Sheffield United and the Tricky Trees were convinced that they had got their hands on a top-class talent.

And their faith was rewarded last season, with the £80k-per-week star playing a talismanic role in Steve Coopers' side's safety-preserving return to the top-flight, having been hailed as a "real character and leader" for his club by Spurs pundit John Wenham.

Also praised for his "magic tricks" by reporter Jamie Martin, the dynamic ace has really come alive in the second half of the current campaign and might just be the key to success.

As per Sofascore, he has complemented his 12 goal contributions from 32 Premier League fixtures this season by creating 12 big chances, also averaging 1.9 key passes, 1.3 dribbles, 4.6 ball recoveries and 5.3 successful duels per match.

Gibbs-White also, as per FBref, ranks among the top 6% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for aerial duels won per 90, denoting his excellent commitment to winning the ball back and the spring in his step, only standing at 5 foot 9.

He's, humorously, been described as the "Aldi Jude Bellingham" by analyst Raj Chohan, and while this is something of a double-edged compliment, it does highlight Gibbs-White's high-level traits and how they could make a marked improvement on Postecoglou's team.

The "Aldi Jude Bellingham"

Jude Bellingham might as well have been grown in a laboratory, such is the 20-year-old's prodigious talent, excelling at the world's most prestigious football club following his £115m transfer to the Spanish capital from Borussia Dortmund last summer.

A multi-functioning, many-faceted midfielder, Bellingham wreaked fear onto the opposition following a blistering, unexplainable start to life at the Santiago Bernabeu, scoring with ferocious consistency and currently boasting 20 goals and ten assists from 35 matches for his team.

Jude Bellingham for Real Madrid

Described as a "proper superstar" by broadcaster Dan Walker after Los Blancos dumped defending Champions League winners Manchester City on penalties, the England international is destined for stardom. Should England find a men's Ballon d'Or winner in the near future, he is him.

As per FBref, Bellingham ranks among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 2% for pass completion, the top 5% for progressive passes, the top 10% for interceptions, the top 6% for blocks and the top 18% for aerial wins per 90.

Gibbs-White is not Bellingham, nor, really, is he the 'Aldi Jude Bellingham.' Gibbs-White possesses his own skill set and he would make an impression at Tottenham based on this fact, not that fact he offers intelligent movement, sweet pivoting motions when collecting on the turn, and deft dribbling to draw a certain semblance.

Morgan Gibbs-White celebrates for Nottingham Forest

But what is pertinent is the robust player's athleticism and tactical flexibility, covering much ground across a range of positional roles this season and finding success in each.

His ability to play off focal points and blend his direct threat with playmaking quality makes him a great partner for Spurs skipper Heung-min Son, who is something of a protean attacking player himself.

Son has compensated for Harry Kane's summer sale superbly this season, often playing in a centre-forward position, scoring 15 goals and providing nine assists for his teammates across 29 Premier League matches.

He is invariably dangerous, in large part due to his vast array of tools, and even when fielded at the spearhead he's dropping deeper, playing balls forward, seeking out passages and movements from his teammates.

Gibbs-White would be a masterful addition, with his unceasing supply of creativity setting Son up while his forays into the final third will allow the South Korean phenom to return the favour.

Postecoglou's system is built on fluidity and hard-working commitment from his players, with Gibbs-White undoubtedly suited for such a style of play.

While Tottenham have a healthy bunch of impressive offensive players, Gibbs-White could provide the attacking midfield with a Bellingham-like presence to boost Son, serve as a foil for James Maddison and ensure that the club continue to rise under Postecoglou's guidance.

Series win in South Africa would be 'proudest result' as captain – Joe Root

Captain claims the sky’s the limit for his young team, with Jofra Archer set to replace Mark Wood in their XI

George Dobell in Johannesburg23-Jan-2020

Joe Root heads out to bat in the nets•Getty Images

Joe Root believes winning the Test series in South Africa would rank as the “proudest result” of his captaincy career. While Root has led his side to other series victories – notably a 3-0 clean sweep in Sri Lanka little more than a year ago and a 4-1 victory against India earlier in the same year – he believes that winning against South Africa with a young team which has faced numerous challenges during the tour would be “a very big achievement.”ALSO READ: Can Buttler cast off his Test shackles?A few weeks into the trip, Ben Stokes suggested – with tongue only partly in cheek – that it had become known as “the cursed tour.” Perhaps that was understandable, too. By that stage his dad, Ged, had suffered a serious illness and most of the squad had struggled with a sickness bug that compromised their performance in the first Test. By the time the third Test started, three first-choice players – their leading bowler, James Anderson, as well as their leading spinner (Jack Leach) and opening batsman (Rory Burns) – had been forced to return to England as a result of injury or illness.Despite losing that first Test, England have taken a 2-1 lead in the series ahead of the final game starting in Johannesburg on Friday. And Root feels that, given the youth of his side – there will be at least five men aged 25 or under in the England team to play this Test – and the promise they have shown that “the sky is the limit for this team.””It’s been a tour that has thrown everything at us,” Root said. “But the whole squad – the players and the coaching staff – have worked tirelessly to make sure we stayed calm and as in control as we could. And then, when we’ve had our opportunities to bounce back, we’ve really taken them.”It’s been really pleasing in many ways. We’re a very young side at the start of something and we’ve seen some very promising performances. To win three Tests in a row would be a very big achievement for this group.

“A series win here probably would be my proudest achievement as captain, because of the different things we’ve had to manage throughout this tour. We’ve had injuries and senior players having to fly home and a lot of illness to deal with. And we have adapted to very different conditions.”For a young group of players that has been very pleasing and a sign we’re doing the right things. If we can harness that and keep looking to improve then I do think the sky’s the limit for this team. But we’re very much at the start of something here and we’re not perfect by any means. We have to keep that attitude and keep driving that forward for a long period of time if we want to get to No. 1 in the world.”While Root said he would like to field an attack including Mark Wood and Jofra Archer, it seems Wood may miss out. While he did bowl in training on Thursday and no final has yet been reached, it appeared that he was struggling to fully shake-off the exertions of the previous Test. Considering that match was his first first-class game in 11 months, and his first appearance in any format since the World Cup final in July, it was not huge surprise that he seemed unable to generate the pace he showed in Port Elizabeth during training.Archer, however, backed up his superb spell in training on Wednesday with an equally impressive one on Thursday. As a result, Archer for Wood is the only likely change.”It would be nice to see how Archer and Wood go together,” Root said. “It would be a relentless barrage of pace which is exciting on the surface you typically get here at the Wanderers. It would be great to have that extra bit of pace and firepower, but ultimately we’ve got to hit the right areas as we have done in the last couple of games.”

Tottenham planning £17m bid for "superb" player who’s outscored Richarlison

As things stand, Tottenham Hotspur are set to miss out on a place inside the Premier League's top four and subsequent qualification for the Champions League, which has reportedly already seen them turn their attention towards the summer window and a potential game-changer.

Tottenham transfer news

The Lilywhites' budget may not prove to be as extensive as last summer when they were able to use the sale of Harry Kane to fund moves for the likes of Micky van de Ven and James Maddison. But that doesn't mean they'll be without reinforcements in the coming months. Players such as Lloyd Kelly and Tosin Adarabioyo have already reportedly been identified in two free deals come the end of the season, perhaps highlighting how the Lilywhites are aiming to be shrewd with their business.

Tottenham now eyeing move to sign "gifted" player at the top of his game

The Lilywhites could secure a bargain deal…

ByTom Cunningham Apr 21, 2024

Away from his backline, however, Ange Postecoglou could also do with some added firepower in North London, given that Maddison hasn't been without injury problems this season and the Lilywhites struggle to create as impressively in his absence. Alas, it's a problem that Daniel Levy seems to be aware of, with reports suggesting that Spurs are ready to find a solution.

After previous reports suggested that they were ready to submit their bid, according to Fanatik via Sport Witness, Spurs are now planning to make their first offer to sign Sebastian Szymanski from Fenerbahce this summer in a bid worth €20m (£17m). That offer is likely to be rejected, however, with the Turkish club reportedly set to demand at least €25m (£22m) for their attacking midfielder in the forthcoming transfer window.

Spurs transfer target Sebastian Szymanski in action for Fenerbahce.

It's a price that Spurs could be wise to pursue though, there's no doubt about that, after the season that Szymanski has enjoyed in Turkey. It could even be argued that his arrival would bridge the gap in the Premier League's top four once again.

"Superb" Szymanski can partner Maddison

If Postecoglou wants to get his side firing on all cylinders then welcoming the perfect partner for Maddison in midfield is one way to go about ensuring that. And that's where Szymanski could come in. A player who can assist goals as well as score them himself, Szymanski has found the back of the net more times than Richarlison this season, with 12 goals and 17 assists to his name bettering the Brazilian's tally of 11 goals and three assists.

It's no surprise that Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig identified the midfielder as a player to watch from the off, either, describing Szymanski as "superb" back in 2021.

Now three years later, Szymanski could get his biggest move yet this summer and step into Postecoglou's side to become the difference-maker they've so desperately lacked at times this season.

Man Utd make first move to sign "magnificent" new gem to support Hojlund

Whilst there may have been some initial concerns over Rasmus Hojlund's ability to lead Manchester United's attack, he is now undoubtedly the main man in his role, creating the need for the Red Devils to find an adequate backup.

Man Utd transfer news

The Dane has been one of few bright sparks at Old Trafford this season and represents a player who is only just getting started. Erik ten Hag is certainly a fan of his talent and was even full of praise for his forward in a recent interview with Sky Sports, although he admitted that those at Old Trafford initially looked elsewhere for attacking options.

At 21 years old, however, Hojlund can't carry the responsibility on his own. United must look to secure a player who can step in and fill the boots of the Dane when the time comes to hand him a rest. And that's where Vitor Roque could come in.

Man Utd could sign "one of the best midfielders" around to partner Mainoo

He has played under Ten Hag before

ByJoe Nuttall May 3, 2024

According to Mundo Deportivo, Manchester United have made contact with Roque's agent over a potential loan deal from Barcelona this summer. The Brazilian, still just 19 years old, is yet to break into Xavi's side on a consistent basis and reports suggest that the teenager could be loaned out to gain more minutes next season.

Athletico Paranaense striker Vitor Roque.

It's a sign of Roque's talent that a club of United's calibre are seemingly interested in landing a deal this summer even if he hasn't broken into Barcelona's starting side as of yet. It's also a positive sign when it comes to Manchester United's recruitment under Sir Jim Ratcliffe that they've turned their attention towards a future star rather than big marquee deals.

"Magnificent" Roque can compete with Hojlund

Competition is healthy in any squad, but ultimately, it's something that United lack. A lack of competition can breed mediocrity and Old Trafford has seen just that this season, creating the need for vital reinforcements this summer. Handing Hojlund a player of Roque's potential to go up against for a starting place should only result in further improvement, which could make all the difference for Ten Hag.

Roque isn't a player who will want to just sit back and settle for a place on the bench, either, having proved exactly what he's capable of in Brazil to earn the praise of Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig.

It remains to be seen whether United can land a loan deal for the Barcelona man, but he would certainly help push Hojlund past his tally of 14 goals so far this season.

Ipswich Town: The players who earned Premier League promotion (2024)

Ipswich Town have not been in England’s top flight since 2002, with the Tractor Boys becoming Championship regulars over the last two decades.

Things hit a new low in 2019 when they sank to the third tier for the first time in nearly 30 years. Paul Lambert’s side finished rock bottom of the Championship and spent four years in League One before Kieran McKenna took them up in his first full season at the helm.

And rather than focus on consolidating their second-tier status like Plymouth Argyle, who beat them to the League One title last year, Ipswich sought even bigger dreams, with the team securing a return to the Premier League after defeating Huddersfield Town on the final day of the Championship season.

It has been a remarkable campaign from all those involved at Portman Road. But who are the players that have taken the Tractor Boys this far, and who could shine for them in the Premier League next season?

Football FanCast takes a look at their current squad to have featured in at least one game, ranked by their Championship goal involvement during the 2023/24 season, with the help of stats from WhoScored.

Christian Walton Goalkeeper

Christian Walton was gifted the last few moments of Ipswich's promotion campaign, having spent the league season looking on from the subs' bench after recovering from injury early on. He can now say he played his part on the pitch, though whether he can truly claim to have gone the whole year without conceding might take some convincing.

Sone Aluko Forward

Sone Aluko is one of Ipswich’s more experienced players, and although he played a minimal part in their promotion push with just one league appearance off the bench, he remains an important figure for the team off the pitch.

He also scored in the Tractor Boys’ EFL Cup victory over Bristol Rovers back in August.

Gerrard Buabo Forward

With just three Championship minutes to his name this term, Gerrard Buabo has been firmly on the fringes of the first team in recent months. But given he was also handed runouts in Ipswich’s FA Cup run, the 18-year-old could yet be in McKenna’s long-term plans.

The highest points tallies in Championship history

Some teams truly go up in style…

ByCharlie Smith May 17, 2025 Dominic Ball Midfielder

Dominic Ball found minutes hard to come by this season, but remains a trusted member of the squad after helping the club to promotion from League One.

Ball has struggled with injuries which have restricted his time in Ipswich colours, though he is an experienced player at this level, having previously turned out for QPR and Rotherham United, as well as Rangers when the Scottish giants were in the Championship.

Janoi Donacien Defender

St Lucia international Janoi Donacien is another who has been unlucky with injury, as a groin problem has severely derailed his campaign, having been a mainstay as Ipswich won promotion from League One. He started each of Ipswich’s opening three games but has not featured for the first team since November.

Lewis Travis Midfielder

Lewis Travis became a useful option for McKenna’s side since joining on loan in January from Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers.

Yet to lose in Ipswich colours, Travis’ highlight arguably came on his debut when his defence-splitting pass helped Kayden Jackson to score a vital equaliser in their comeback win over Sunderland.

Vaclav Hladky Goalkeeper

Vaclav Hadky

Vaclav Hladky clocked up more minutes under his belt than any other Ipswich player, with the Czech shot-stopper playing all bar the final seconds of their final-day victory.

A vital component of the team’s success this year, Hladky is also no stranger to a yellow card – he picked up three in Ipswich’s opening six games. However, he has also been impressive in penalty shootouts at his previous clubs, so could be worth considering as a budget goalkeeper in next season’s Fantasy League.

Cameron Humphreys Midfielder

Cameron Humphreys became a key player in last year’s promotion run, but had to be patient for opportunities this term, having mainly featured in Ipswich’s cup fixtures.

Humphreys’ best moment in his limited Championship minutes this year came in the dramatic 2-2 draw at Birmingham City in November, when he kept Omari Hutchinson’s cross alive before Marcus Harness superbly volleyed home.

Axel Tuanzebe Defender

Axel Tuanzebe made his name at Manchester United, and via loan spells in the Championship and Italy’s Serie A, the DR Congo defender joined Ipswich’s promotion push after finding himself without a club in the summer.

His versatility has come to the fore in more recent months, with the defender filling in at right-back in 12 of Ipswich’s last 14 games, of which they lost just one.

Brandon Williams Defender

Another talent from Man Utd’s production line is Brandon Williams, who has spent the current season on loan at Portman Road. Unfortunately for the 23-year-old, he has suffered multiple injury setbacks this term.

He had started the season in impressive fashion, too, having grabbed an important equaliser at Huddersfield Town before scoring again in Ipswich’s win over Preston in October, all while ending on the winning side in eight of his first ten matches.
