Georgia Elwiss determined to make England return 'special' with Ashes on the line

The allrounder has been named in Test squad after months out with back injury and hopes to help turn England’s fortunes around

Georgia Elwiss is determined to mark her international return by helping England make a “special” comeback of their own when they face Australia in this week’s Test with the Women’s Ashes on the line.Elwiss, the 28-year-old allrounder who has played the past two WBBL seasons with Melbourne Stars, was named in England’s 13-strong squad for the four-day match starting at Taunton on Thursday after being sidelined for more than four months with a back injury.”Injuries are never nice and I think it’s just made me really hungry to be able to contribute to hopefully us pulling off something special for the rest of this series and regaining the Ashes,” Elwiss said.England trail Australia six points to nil after losing all three of their ODIs and must win the Test, worth four points, to remain in the contest for the Ashes with three T20s worth two points each to follow. Also read: ‘The beauty of the red ball is bringing it back to life’ – SchuttElwiss admitted it had been difficult having to watch her team rather than taking part after she felt pain while playing England’s one-day series in India in February and scans revealed a small stress fracture in her back, which then ruled her out of the tour of Sri Lanka, plus a home series against West Indies.”Unfortunately I had to get shut down for a fair few months, so I’m on the comeback trail now and fit and raring to go,” Elwiss said. “Hopefully I can contribute to the girls this week and bring some energy and bring something new to the dynamics of the team.”It’s been not very nice watching the girls out there playing while I’m stuck in the gym but I think that’ s made me really hungry to do everything really well and properly and diligently and so I know that now I’m back I’ll be back better than ever.”Elwiss has played two Tests, in the 2015 and 2017 Ashes, batting at No.4 in the latter where she made a second-innings 41 not out off 190 balls to help England hold out for a draw after Australia’s Ellyse Perry had notched an unbeaten double century. Also read: Perth glories inspire Cross to hit her markElwiss struck an unbeaten 44 batting at No.4 and 36 opening for England in a three-day tour match against Australia A, which finished on Sunday, and said while she enjoyed batting in the upper middle order, she was feeling good with bat and ball and was happy to do “whatever job is asked of me”.”I’ve got to break into the XI first and then see where we go from there,” Elwiss said. “The ODI series was disappointing. We need to remember that we’re not a bad team and we’re not actually that far away from the Australians.”They’ve played some good cricket, probably by their admission not the complete package in terms of their ODI game either. We’ve played some good cricket at times and I think we need to keep remembering that they’re humans as well and they’re going to make mistakes and we’re ready to pounce.”Elwiss comes into the England squad alongside youngster Kirstie Gordon and Katherine Brunt, the 34-year-old fast bowler who is a veteran of 11 Test matches. Brunt, who is no stranger to back injuries with disc problems that require ongoing management, returns having missed the third ODI against Australia after hurting her ankle while leaping in the air to celebrate taking a wicket in the second match of the series.Katherine Brunt turns her ankle celebrating the wicket of Meg Lanning•Getty Images

“We call her the grandma of the group – she hates it,” Elwiss said. “She’s got all the experience but she’s still got the heart and the drive and the fight of a 19-year-old coming in and that’s testament to her.”She’s played a lot of Test matches and a lot of Ashes Test matches. She’s been through a lot in her career and has got plenty of battle scars and things like that so she’s a great person to have around the group. She’s great for giving advice.”She does waffle on a lot so you have to pick your moments to get advice from her because you could be sat there for half an hour listening to her answer, but she’s great,” Elwiss added with a laugh. “She’s a great person to have around and she’s great with the youngsters because she’s always willing to offer that advice.”

Chelsea’s new Mount could help them repeat Liverpool’s academy success

After a weekend where the club once again came within touching distance of a trophy, Chelsea need to try and find a way to end their unwanted run of cup final defeats in recent seasons.

The club have lost six consecutive cup finals since 2019, with the Blues losing their last three in a row to Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool, with the latest arguably the poorest defeat.

The Reds used seven academy products during the Carabao Cup final, with the players having an average age of just 20 years and two months – with Jayden Danns, son of former professional footballer Neil Danns, the youngster at just 18.

Klopp's side managed to find a way to win with his crop of promising youngsters, with Chelsea needing to adopt a similar approach and steer away from big-money signings in the transfer window.

In recent seasons, Chelsea have developed some brilliant talents, with Conor Gallagher and Levi Colwill just two examples within Mauricio Pochettino's side.

However, there's one player within the club's academy who has impressed and should be fast-tracked into the Blues' current first-team setup.

Chelsea's next great academy talent

Despite his tender age of just 18, Leo Castledine is a player with a huge future at Stamford Bridge, with the attacking midfielder capable of making the step into Pochettino's plans.

The midfielder was part of the Cobham Academy as a youngster, before leaving the club to join lower league side AFC Wimbledon in 2013, before rejoining his boyhood club back in March 2020.

Castledine signed his Chelsea professional contract on his 17th birthday back in August 2022, with the youngster impressing for the club's academy in recent seasons.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

He had featured on the bench multiple times for the Blues this season, before making his senior debut as a substitute against Middlesbrough during the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg.

The 18-year-old came on with just five minutes to go. However, he failed to make a real impact, with Chelsea already securing the victory before his introduction.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast's In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Chelsea's next Mason Mount inbound

Mason Mount was one of the last attacking players to come through Chelsea's academy, starring in loan moves to sides such as Vitesse and Derby County before making an impact on the Blues' first team.

Castledine, "who's similar to Mount" in the eyes of Chelsea’s U21s coach Mark Robinson, could benefit from a loan move to a League One or League Two side, giving him vital experience in men's football before making an impact under Pochettino.

The youngster has excelled for the Blues' U21s in Premier League 2, scoring seven times with eight assists in 14 games – with Castledine contributing to 44% of the side's goals so far this campaign.

Castledine has a huge future ahead of him, with Chelsea conducting brilliant business in bringing him back to the club in 2020.

Whilst he's still very young with a long way to go until he features within the Blues first-team, it's great to see a promising youngster coming through the ranks – with one eye ahead on the future.

Josh Hazlewood five-for leaves England's Ashes hopes hanging by a thread

Hazlewood claims 5 for 30 as England are bowled out for 67 and Australia close in on 300-plus lead

The Report by Valkerie Baynes 23-Aug-2019
A dire capitulation with the bat left England’s Ashes hopes hanging by a thread after another thrilling day at Headingley in what has been an engrossing series.Credit went to Australia’s strike bowlers – led by Josh Hazlewood’s devastating five-wicket haul – for putting Australia in position to win the third Test and take a 2-0 lead in the series, which would allow them to retain the urn, with three days still to go in the match. But England did not help themselves one bit, bundled out for just 67 – their lowest Ashes total since 1948 – with rash shots an all-too-common feature.Sixteen wickets fell on a day when Joe Denly was England’s top-scorer with just 12, Jason Roy’s struggle to establish himself as a Test opener faltered again, and Joe Root made consecutive ducks for the first time in his career as questions resurfaced about his batting position. In all honesty, just about everyone under an England helmet looked out of position and out of their depth as Hazlewood struck early on his way to claiming 5 for 30, well supported by Pat Cummins and James Pattinson, who chimed in with three and two wickets respectively.Replying to Australia’s seemingly below-par 179, England were in all sorts of bother at 10 for 2 after Hazlewood had Roy and Root both caught in the slips by David Warner – who had not only rediscovered some form with the bat, striking 61 the previous day, but also in the field, overcoming a rash of dropped chances earlier in the series to hold four on the second day at Headingley – the most ever in an innings by an Australia fielder in an overseas Ashes Test.Josh Hazlewood celebrates after dismissing Jason Roy•Getty Images

Roy was out driving at a Hazlewood delivery which was wide of off stump and moved ever so slightly to draw the edge, while Root – batting one place higher than his preferred No. 4 – hung his bat out to a good ball which had a hint of movement off the seam. When Rory Burns gloved a Cummins bouncer to Tim Paine behind the stumps, England were 20 for 3 and from there the procession of cheap wickets continued.Ben Stokes flashed a drive at a wide one to slip, before Denly’s tortured 49-ball stay was ended via another outside edge. Denly was the only batsman to make it into double-figures, and Bairstow fell to a brilliant Warner grab, Chris Woakes gloved behind from the first ball after lunch and Jos Buttler chipped Hazlewood straight to cover.During the evening, as England attempted to claw their way back into the game, Stokes toiled for a mammoth 15.2 overs, with only four balls breaking up his spell before he was called back into action when Jofra Archer suffered leg cramps. Stokes’ efforts delivered two wickets for England, alongside two for Stuart Broad, as Australia finished in a strong position, Marnus Labuschagne passing fifty for the third time in as many innings and still unbeaten at the close. With three days yet to build their lead and then bowl England out, Australia were in the best position they could have hoped for after grafting in difficult batting conditions on the opening day for their total of 179.Their prospects didn’t look so great when Warner was out lbw for a duck, dismissed for the fourth time by Broad in six innings this series. Marcus Harris followed soon after and, when Usman Khawaja was out to a loose shot off Woakes, they were 52 for 3, leading by just 164.But Travis Head and Labuschagne dug in and it was a long time before Stokes, brought into the attack in the second over after tea, made the breakthrough. Stokes tried with all his might to make things happen for England, delivering a maiden first up and suffering a dropped catch – Labuschagne juggled and spilled by Root in his second over.Stokes hit 89mph bowling to Labuschagne, then dismissed Head in his next over, sneaking through a yorker via the batsman’s inside edge. Matthew Wade treated an 88mph Stokes delivery with disdain, flicking it through midwicket for four, before Stokes responded by peppering Wade with a series of short balls.Stokes bowled eight overs straight before he was replaced by Archer but, four balls into the over, Stokes had to finish it when Archer was struck down by cramp. Archer eventually returned to the field, to the delight of the crowd, whose watermelon beach ball he had saved from the clutches of a security guard earlier. But Stokes bowled on and eventually struck again in his 13th full over with the wicket of Wade, caught behind off the glove. That prompted Stokes to collapse on the ground, an exhausted grin on his face as his team-mates gathered round to congratulate him.Broad had Paine out amid some confusion over whether it was lbw or a caught, prompting the batsman into a hopeful review. DRS confirmed an edge, to Paine’s obvious displeasure, but Labuschagne remained until the close to leave his side in decent shape.

Ben Stokes has capped off a dream season by being named the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) Players’ Player of the Year in recognition of his World Cup and Ashes heroics.Nominated alongside Ryan Higgins, Dominic Sibley and Cricket Writers’ Club Player of the Year Simon Harmer, Stokes received the most votes from his peers to become the sixth player to have achieved the Young Player/Player’s Player double in their career, and the first man to win the trophy for their international performances since Andrew Flintoff in 2005.There were also awards for Tom Banton, who was named Young Player of the Year, and Sophie Ecclestone, who retained her prize as Women’s Player of the Summer.Stokes produced the two innings of the summer, hitting a crucial, unbeaten 84 to take the World Cup final to a super over and smiting 135 not out at Headingley to almost single-handedly drag England over the line in a one-wicket win in the third Ashes Test against Australia to level the series 1-1.ALSO READ: Stokes takes top two spots in poll of cricket’s greatest performances”It’s hard to put it into words,” said Stokes. “I am over the moon that players think I am worthy of winning the NatWest PCA Players’ Player of the Year through performances this summer.”You can take a lot of personal pride when you receive this award because it’s your peers that vote for you. Earning this award is a huge moment and something I am very gracious of and I am sure the previous 49 winners are gracious of too.”While this is an individual award, it is within a team sport so I am only in this position because of what other guys in our squad have achieved as well. What we have done as a team in 2019 is phenomenal, to win the World Cup and draw the Ashes has been a fantastic summer and something I am proud of personally and as a team.”Banton, who turns 21 in November, enjoyed a remarkable breakout summer for Somerset, hitting 454 runs in their victorious One-Day Cup campaign before scoring 549 more in the Vitality Blast, a total bettered only by his opening partner Babar Azam.ALSO READ: Banton lights up the Blast to attract T20 franchise interestHe beat Sibley, James Bracey, and Zak Crawley to the award – his second in two days after scooping the Cricket Writers’ Club prize on Tuesday – and is set to complete a fine week on Thursday when he will be unveiled as a ‘local icon’ player for the Cardiff-based Hundred team, before travelling to New Zealand as part of England’s T20 squad towards the end of the month.”I am very grateful and thankful to those guys who voted for me,” Banton said. “I never expected it to be honest looking at the other nominees.”If someone had told me the year I would’ve had at the start of the season I wouldn’t have believed them. I have altered some technical faults I had at the beginning of the year with Marcus Trescothick and he has helped me a lot this year and has made me believe I can go all the way.”To have my name on the John Arlott Cup is a special feeling. As a youngster I’ve looked up to so many of the previous winners and tried to be like them. Some of these players are my idols so it’s nice to know they have won it before me. Also, these players are some of the very best so you never know what can happen, but if I keep working hard I could follow them.”Ecclestone becomes the first player to retain the Women’s Player of the Summer award, having topped England’s wicket-taking charts in both the white-ball series against West Indies, and in the Ashes.Sophie Ecclestone was England’s most prolific bowler throughout the 2019 summer•Getty Images

“I wish we’d played a bit better during the summer but it’s a really special feeling to be the first player to win it twice,” said Ecclestone.”I feel like I’m a bit more of a presence in the team now than I was last year, and I’ve enjoyed getting my point of view across.”The highlight was definitely when we came back and won the last T20I. It was really nice to end on a high and show that we’re a team to be reckoned with at the T20 World Cup next year. The big goal is to get ready for that World Cup and show everyone what we’re all about.”The awards ceremony at the Roundhouse in Camden also saw Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad named ODI and Test player of the summer respectively.Simon Harmer, Saqib Mahmood, and D’Arcy Short won the player of the tournament awards for the County Championship, One-Day Cup and Vitality Blast respectively, while England’s white-ball captain Eoin Morgan won a ‘special award’.

Arsenal whiz was the next Bergkamp and now he’s worth £13m

The rise of Arsenal under Mikel Arteta has simply been fantastic to watch, especially in regards to his complete squad overhaul.

When the Spaniard arrived, the squad was full of different profiles, with opposite strengths, and of all ages.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta

However, the boss was always keen to hand the youth an opportunity to thrive if they were deemed good enough, as proven by Bukayo Saka starting at left-back against Bournemouth in Arteta’s first game in charge.

That said, there was one young prospect who sat on the bench during that 1-1 draw but slowly started to become one of the most exciting talents at the Gunners.

Emile Smith Rowe’s first impression

Having been at Arsenal since the age of nine, Emile Smith Rowe progressed through the ranks to become one of the finest Hale End Academy products in recent years.

After returning on loan from Huddersfield Town in the Championship in 2020, Smith Rowe finally got his major breakthrough in the Arsenal first team under Arteta, where he would go on to play 20 times in the Premier League, scoring twice and picking up four assists.

The hype surrounding the then-number 32 was immense, with the young, versatile attacker stepping up during a season when the Gunners finished eighth.

After establishing himself as an important player in the first half of the season, even pundits were getting slightly carried away with their praise for the youngster, with former player Colin Omogbehin stating:

"He's like Dennis Bergkamp but with pace."

Dennis Bergkamp

To be compared to such an Arsenal icon who played in a similar role, scoring 120 goals and providing 103 assists in 422 matches for the Gunners.

The "quality" Smith Rowe, as per journalist Phil McNulty, really started to thrive in the 2021/22 campaign with ten Premier League goals, having been handed the iconic number ten shirt in the summer. Upon being given the number, the 23-year-old even referenced the Iceman:

"When I was younger I used to watch Dennis Bergkamp, and when I was going through the academy Mesut Ozil was here as well and getting the opportunity to train with him and play with him as well was unbelievable. I just want to keep working hard and hopefully I can play like them and replicate what they've done."

But unfortunately, his career has not exactly gone according to plan since that initial breakthrough, and comparison to the Dutch magician.

Arsenal should axe forgotten man who's earning more than Smith Rowe

The experienced star should be on his way out of the Emirates.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Mar 2, 2024 Smith Rowe’s value in 2024

There’s no two ways about it; injuries have simply ruined Smith Rowe's progression and development in recent times, with the last two years being particularly difficult for the midfielder.

Last season, the former RB Leipzig loanee only played a total of 241 minutes across all competitions, having had groin surgery, which kept him out for 14 matches.

Unfortunately, setbacks have decreased his time on the pitch once again this season, playing 357 minutes and missing ten games already due to a knee injury, and an ankle knock.

The lack of matches played and the ever-increasing injury history record have caused Smith Rowe’s value to decrease significantly, to the point where he is one of the lowest-valued first-team players in the Arsenal squad at £13m, according to CIES’ Football Observatory.

With Arsenal now not opting for a system that utilises a number-ten role and the team performing so well, Smith Rowe has found it difficult to work his way into the starting lineup.

It’s upsetting to see a young talent who was so impressive that he was once compared to Bergkamp suffer so much, and it sadly seems that his playing career will only truly revive if he leaves his boyhood club.

Hopefully, however, there is another twist in the story and Smith Rowe can get back to his best under Arteta before a move away from The Emirates is needed.
