Chatara, Raza bowl Zimbabwe to 139-run lead

The duo took three wickets each as Bangladesh folded for 143 after Taijul Islam’s six-wicket haul had limited Zimbabwe to 282 earlier in the day

The Report by Mohammad Isam04-Nov-2018AFP

Bangladesh were bowled out for 143 in their first innings, after Tendai Chatara ripped through the top-order with a three-wicket burst, and Sikandar Raza followed it up with three wickets of his own, giving Zimbabwe a crucial 139-run lead in Sylhet. Zimbabwe could only add one more run in reply before the umpires ruled that the light was too bad, bringing an end to a day dominated by the visitors. It was Bangladesh’s seventh successive sub-200 total in Tests this year. Chatara initiated the collapse by removing Imrul Kayes, the player of ODI series, who tentatively poked at a short ball away from his body and inside-edged onto the stumps.Kyle Jarvis then got into the act, getting Liton Das to drive him for four through the off-side before sucking him into another drive. However, the second one ended up being a sharp outswinging delivery that took the outside edge.Chatara then had Nazmul Hossain Shanto also playing away from his body. One ball later, Mahmudullah fell, inside-edging Chatara as the home side sunk to 19 for 4. All four wickets had resulted from bad shots.Mushfiqur and Mominul Haque added the first of four small partnerships that took Bangladesh beyond the follow-on mark, and into three figures. Mominul edged Raza to Masakadza at slip to end their 30-run stand, before Jarvis had Mushfiqur caught behind after the tea interval. Having cracked him for a four through point off the first ball of the third session, Mushfiqur poked at the next ball, another delivery that subtly left him.Mehidy Hasan then perhaps had the softest of dismissals, top edging a leg-side bound delivery from part-timer Sean Williams. Raza took his second and third wickets by removing Taijul Islam and Nazmul Islam, before Abu Jayed’s run-out put an end to Bangladesh’s misery. The morning session belonged to Taijul who completed a six-wicket haul. He broke through the visitors’ resistance in the 12th over of the morning, though Shanto’s catch played a bigger part in the dismissal. As Chakabva clipped Taijul, Shanto was looking for cover but the ball settled straight into his palms. Taijul also removed Wellington Masakadza, before picking up Jarvis and Chatara off consecutive balls.Any high the hosts may have got from the rapid end to the Zimbabwe innings, however, was quickly snuffed out.

Na cobrança, Iago Teles faz o segundo dele no jogo e deixou tudo igual no placar: Corinthians 3 x 3 Red Bull Bragantino.

O drama corintiana continuaria.

Bumrah stars but Australia's tail makes India sweat for famous victory

Australia’s lower order conjured thoughts of a remarkable victory but India held on to take the series lead

Andrew McGlashan09-Dec-2018Had it done enough to be classed as nerve-jangling? It was certainly engrossing. A wonderful Test match. India secured their first Test victory in Australia since 2008 and lead a series in the country for only the second time after a gripping 31-run win in Adelaide.Their quicks led the way on the final day, breaking through each time a partnership was threatening to develop, with Jasprit Bumrah providing the bulk of the key moments. But Australia’s last wicket pair of Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood got it down to needing 32 to win when, on the brink of a delayed tea, Hazlewood drove at R Ashwin and edged low to second slip. Elation everywhere for India, pain for Australia but, when they reflect, pride as well.1:06

Laxman: Both bowling units fantastic, the batting will decide series

It always felt the target was out of reach, but the last three wickets added 104 to ensure India could never be sure. Shaun Marsh, the focus of much attention after his first-innings continued a run a single-figure scores, played very well for his 60 and Tim Paine battled hard, but both fell to Bumrah who then returned to shift the stubborn Pat Cummins when Australia’s lower order was showing plenty of bottle.Rishabh Pant equalled the world record of 11 dismissals in a match, but for a little while it appeared one that escaped – when Lyon edged Bumrah on 7 – looked like it might come back to haunt him as Lyon produced one of his finest Test innings. The tension was starting to show on India when Ashwin was finally rewarded after a final day of toil: never had an India bowler sent down as many overs in the fourth innings of a Test.Australia resumed the final day on 4 for 104, still needing a distant 219, and had only added another 11 when Travis Head was removed by a superbly-directed short ball from Ishant Sharma which he could only fend into the slips. It was the perfect length, leaving the batsman unsure whether to play the ball or sway out of the line.Pat Cummins slams the ball over cover•Getty Images

The first of the day’s mini-stands then began to form between Marsh and Paine, but all the runs continued to be a grind against a disciplined attack. Marsh went to his fifty off 146 balls, his first in the fourth innings of a Test, before being defeated by Bumrah’s line from round the wicket and feathering a catch to Pant.Despite all his catches, Pant’s glovework certainly remains a work in progress and with a better technique might have got closer to Paine’s gloved pull on 7 which flew fine down the leg side. Australia’s captain made it through to lunch alongside Cummins, but could not go much further when he top-edged a pull to the first ball of the second over after the break. At that point, Australia needed 136 and any modicum of tension seemed a long way off. However, Cummins and Starc got the target down into double figures, the former playing a largely defensive role while the latter produced a few more shots. Again, though, just as thoughts were turning to what happen India struck, Starc edging a big drive against Mohammed Shami for Pant’s record-equalling catch.Still Australia did not fold, this time Cummins and Lyon chipping away. Cummins was just showing signs of coming out of his shell, having passed 100 deliveries faced – driving Shami powerfully on the up through the covers – when he edged a drive off Bumrah which was taken at first slip by Virat Kohli, the India captain hurling the ball to ground with a look of thunder on his face. With just one wicket to fall, the odds were stacked against Australia but a few little things started to go their way: Ishant over-stepped when Lyon might have been given lbw on 32 and edges started to fly wide of the slips. Ashwin had rarely been attacked by the Australia batsman, but the last-wicket pair were nullifying him effectively. One delivery jumped at Hazlewood, took the shoulder of the bat and evaded the field. Surely not? And in the it wasn’t. From around the wicket, Ashwin pushed one full, encouraged the drive, and KL Rahul took a sharp catch inches off the turf. The marker has been laid for this series. It promises much more.

Spurs planning January bid for "high energy" star who’s "leaving" his club

Tottenham are planning a potential January bid for one club's "high energy" player as Ange Postecoglou's transfer plans continue to take shape.

Spurs short of squad depth

Spurs' lack of squad depth has been a key discussion in recent weeks, and ever since the start of November saw the north Londoners hit with a wave of injury and suspension problems.

Tottenham suffer another fresh injury blow to "monstrous" player

Ange Postecoglou has unbelievably been dealt a further fitness setback to one of his most experienced stars.

ByChloe Chadwick Dec 5, 2023

Things are slowly starting to take a turn in that regard, with Cristian Romero back and eligible to play against West Ham this evening. Richarlison has also returned after surgery on his pubic bone and got a run out in their thrilling 3-3 draw away to league champions Man City on Sunday.

Romero's return in particular is a god-send, with Tottenham seriously lacking natural centre-back options right now. Alongside both Micky van de Ven and Ashley Phillips, back up option Eric Dier is now also injured and missed their clash at the Etihad Stadium.

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero.

"Great to have him back because he's the only recognised centre-half fit at the moment because Micky van de Ven, Eric Dier and Ashley Phillips are all out so to have him back is obviously good," said Postecoglou on Romero ahead of West Ham (via football.london).

"He's also fantastic player, a leader in group. We lost Madders and him after the Chelsea game so a lot of that [leadership responsibility] fell on Sonny's shoulders so from that perspective good to have him back. I've not had to have a word with about discipline. It’s part of who he is as a player, he brings a physicality to it. When he oversteps mark the whole group pays a price so it's up to him to maintain discipline I know he can show. But more importantly he's such a strong presence on the field and in during the week so good to have him back."

The January transfer window could be seen as key for Spurs as they seek to bolster key areas and avoid a similar availability crisis later in the season. Tottenham want to sign a new centre-back as one major goal, while it has been reported that Spurs are chasing Juventus winger Samuel Iling-Junior for more forward options.

Spurs planning Iling-Junior bid

There has now been an update from Italy on Postecoglou, chairman Daniel Levy and sporting director Johan Lange's interest in the 20-year-old. According to Calciomercato, Tottenham are making a plan to bid for Iling-Junior in January with Ligue 1 giants Marseille also in the mix.

Juventus forwardSamuel Iling-Junior.

The French side, though, will have find the player's asking price of around £17 million tough to meet – which could give a boost to their rival suitors from the Premier League.

Iling-Junior, despite not seeing much in the way of minutes this season, has been praised for his "high energy" with Italian journalists like Michele Neri saying the attacker is a real fan favourite at Juve.

Blow for Corbean: Josh Maja injury update is "worst news" for West Brom

West Bromwich Albion have been dealt a blow after learning that one of their first-team stars is facing an extended spell on the sidelines.

West Brom injury news

The Baggies currently have Daryl Dike, Martin Kelly and Matt Phillips all out of action with their own respective problems as it stands, and they have recently been joined in the treatment room by another squad member having suffered a fresh setback.

In the Championship, Carlos Corberan’s side were on the receiving end of a 2-1 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light last weekend, and unfortunately for the manager, the result wasn’t the only negative to occur from that day on the club’s trip to the northeast.

On 36 minutes, Josh Maja was the subject of a heavy challenge from Dan Ballard and the intense pain that the striker felt forced him off the pitch prematurely, which will have caused concern among supporters because they know that their summer signing hasn’t had the best of luck since he put pen to paper.

The Nigerian has only been able to make one start in the second tier since the start of the season having only recently returned from an ankle injury (WhoScored – Maja statistics), and the 24-year-old is now set to spend another period of time away from the grass.

Maja ruled out for four months

Speaking to West Brom’s official website, Corberan confirmed that Maja is facing four months out because he may require surgery to rectify his problem in order for it to heal as quickly as possible, describing it as the "worst news".

"In the tackle against Sunderland they injured all the ligaments in his ankle, it depends and the doctors still need to ask for a second opinion to see if there is any ligament to fix without surgery. Normally he will need surgery and be out of the team for the next four months. It's the worst news we can give."

West Bromwich Albion's home stadium, The Hawthorns.

Corberan dealt huge blow over Maja

According to Josh Bunting, Maja was an “interesting” addition over the summer, because while he isn’t the best at linking up the play, as per the journalist, he is a fantastic finisher, with his prolific form being something that he has shown right since the very start of his career.

The Lewisham-born talent has clocked up 79 involvements, 61 goals and 18 assists, in 213 appearances following his arrival on the professional scene, and it’s not just his ability to find the back of the net that the boss will have to cope without once again (Transfermarkt – Maja statistics).

Sponsored by Nike, the striker is a versatile operator having previously been deployed in four different positions over the grass, including three roles across the frontline and even as an attacking midfielder, though this is another attribute that the coach won’t have at his disposal for the foreseeable future.

Therefore, Maja not being able to return until April at the earliest will come as a setback to Corberan, and it may mean that the club are forced to enter the market to find a replacement for their injured star during the upcoming transfer window in January.

Maxwell, Stoinis and Larkin lift Stars to second

After their bowlers limited Thunder to 135, Stars’ top-order polished the chase off in 17.2 overs

The Report by Akshay Gopalakrishnan05-Jan-2019Melbourne Stars’ bowlers settled into the ideal pace on a slow Carrara Oval surface to stifle Sydney Thunder and rise to second on the BBL table.Having struck twice inside the Powerplay, the Stars continued to chip away at the Thunder order. Only during a 25-ball 42 from their No. 6 Daniel Sams did the Thunder innings gain a measure of steam. It was enough to lift them to 135 after they had ambled along at around a run a ball for much of the innings.Getty Images

It wasn’t enough to challenge the Stars top order, however. They hardly broke a sweat, knocking down the requisite runs in 17.2 overs to win by eight wickets. Marcus Stoinis blazed away to launch the chase with a 22-ball 34. The foundation was so strong that even the usually belligerent Glenn Maxwell played a muted knock, striking just a four and two sixes in his unbeaten 41, and putting on an unbroken 80 for the third wicket with Nick Larkin to see the Stars home. The defeat has displaced Thunder from the top half of the table. They are now fourth, with six points from as many matches.Choking ’em outAs he did in their previous game, Shane Watson, the Thunder captain, opted against chasing, with the possibility of the surface slowing down as the game wore on. As he did in the previous game, Watson fell early, well inside the Powerplay. But unlike in the previous game, nobody from Thunder’s top order rode the early storm.Jos Buttler, the season’s highest run-getter, was the first to fall, his start cut short when Boland found his leading edge, which was held at point. Calum Ferguson followed next ball, when he threw his hands at an expansive punch and sliced a catch to backward point. The common element in the two balls was that both had been delivered slower. That became the primary ingredient for success on this surface. Joe Root fended softly at the hat-trick ball, which cut away off the seam and found the edge of his bat, but didn’t carry to the keeper. With Thunder 28 for 2, the pressure was on.The pushbackWhile the slower ball was effective, it came with an obvious rider. As a bowler, there was always the risk of overdoing it. Having picked up 2 for 8 in his first two overs, Boland was welcomed into his third with a cut past third man, who misfielded, for four from Root. Very quickly, it prompted Boland to drag the pace back. But Root had already sussed out a template. After negotiating a slower ball and a regular length ball, Root was waiting right back in his crease when Boland dropped his pace, and length, off the fifth ball of the over. He pulled it over midwicket. When Boland repeated the drill next ball, Root played even later, pulling him behind square to give Thunder 12 runs to close out the Powerplay. On a pitch where balls routinely stopped on the batsmen and finding the right timing was difficult, Root had managed a control percentage of 85 when he jabbed a length ball from Stoinis off the inside of his bat to midwicket. However, the best of the fightback was yet to come.Liam Plunkett hadn’t played a T20 since October last year. In fact, barring two T10 matches in the UAE in late November, he hadn’t played any cricket at all. Considering that, he had done well to give away just eight runs from his first two overs. Sams, however, would go on to ruin his figures.Sams pulled a slower short ball from Plunkett for six over backward square off the second ball of the 15th over, and sliced the next for as many over backward point. He then picked a slower ball from Stoinis and sent a towering hit soaring over deep square leg. In between all the big hits, he turned the strike over regularly. It meant that between overs 15 and 17, Thunder collected 35 runs.It was the only spell of substantial acceleration, as after another six off Stoinis, the bowler had the last laugh by having Sams caught at deep point, and Thunder slipped back into their shell. In the end, that made a telling difference. No slow, no goUnlike the Stars bowlers, Thunder’s didn’t bring out their variations and slow it up. Instead, they opted to fire it in at pace. On this surface, with its lack of bite and carry, they were setting themselves up for failure.A rush of boundaries – four of them in the first 14 balls of the innings – warned Thunder that a change in strategy might be called for. And then Ben Dunk drove a full ball from Sams into the hands of Root diving forward at short cover.Thunder’s bowlers continued to go full tilt. Even Jonathan Cook, the legspinner, hit speeds upwards of 90kph. He was taken apart for a hat-trick of fours in the sixth over, which went for 15 runs, and the Stars had raced to 53 for 1 at nearly nine an over.Stars didn’t look back. When Stoinis was taken out by Fawad Ahmed, slicing a catch to backward point, Stars needed 79 from 78 balls. Maxwell and Larkin collected 67.5 percent of those runs in ones and twos. In all, their partnership contained just two fours and three sixes, the last of which, from Maxwell, gave Stars the winning runs.
