Duo launch stunning six-laden assault as Guyana pillage 79 runs in four overs to run down 155-run target with 35 balls to spare
The Report by Peter Della Penna10-Sep-2018Getty Images
Homegrown young guns Shimron Hetmyer and Sherfane Rutherford’s furious assault on the Trinbago Knight Riders ensured Guyana Amazon Warriors clinched second place in the league stage of the 2018 CPL, with a six-wicket win on Sunday night.Warriors raced past a target of 155 with 5.5 overs to spare to overtake Jamaica Tallawahs, whom they tied on 12 points, on net run-rate and set up a rematch between the sides in the first qualifier on Tuesday. Tallawahs finished third and will take on St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in the Eliminator on Wednesday.Col-outColin Munro, the season’s highest scorer, was joined by his namesake in the Knight Riders lineup, with South African Colin Ingram called up as a replacement for Chris Lynn, who has gone back to Australia for the start of his country’s domestic season. But neither Colin made an impact as both were dismissed for single-digit scores.Munro fell in the third over to Sohail Tanvir, when he edged behind a flat-footed swipe. Ten balls later, Ingram slogged Amazon Warriors captain Chris Green to long-on. Brendon McCullum ran himself out with a poor call, taking on Cameron Delport’s arm from backward point, as the Knight Riders’ top order dug the team into a massive hole at 23 for 3 inside the Powerplay.Ray of LightRayad Emrit not only lost the Amazon Warriors captaincy but was also dropped outright for the side’s match a night earlier, in a win over Barbados Tridents, after going four straight matches without a wicket. But a series of injuries to the fast bowling unit opened the door for a recall less than 24 hours later. The 37-year-old made the most of his second chance, taking 2 for 25 in four overs.Initially, it looked like his luckless season would continue, when Hetmyer and Chadwick Walton’s near collision resulted in a dropped chance early in the 12th over. But Emrit’s wicketless stretch finally ended at the conclusion of the over, when Denesh Ramdin flicked to deep square leg, where he was snapped up by Devendra Bishoo, ending a 54-run stand. Emrit struck again, in the 16th over, to clean bowl Dwayne Bravo, who was beaten on the drive, as the Knight Riders struggled. A flurry in the last few overs from Kevon Cooper, who hit three fours and three sixes in his 30 off 14 balls, took the visitors past 150.Warrior ShimmyFor Amazon Warriors to give themselves a second shot at making the final, they needed to chase down the target of 155 in 15.3 overs. The hometown fans had plenty to dance about, thanks to another brilliant knock from the 21-year old Hetmyer.Coming in at the fall of Luke Ronchi to a Fawad Ahmed googly in the fourth over, Hetmyer clattered 59 off 30 balls, including five sixes. The home side were drifting somewhat at 67 for 2 in nine overs, before Hetmyer gave them a huge lift heading into the drinks break by smashing Cooper’s last three balls before the interval for six, four and six over the leg side.Jason Mohammed fell to the first ball after drinks, brilliantly caught at long-off by Dwayne Bravo, but 20-year old Rutherford stole the momentum straight back as he electrified the crowd with three consecutive sixes immediately after arriving. After heaving two over the leg side, he executed an audacious reverse sweep off Nikita Miller over third man for the third six in the sequence.Hetmyer clobbered Anderson Phillip for a four and two more sixes off three straight balls in the following over. Rutherford then tore into Bravo in the 13th for three more sixes, taking the equation down to 10 off 15 balls for Guyana to overtake the Tallawahs on net run-rate.Worse than Bravo’s death bowling was his strategic blunder in failing to bowl out Fawad, the CPL’s leading wicket-taker. On a night when TKR was already shorthanded in the bowling department by virtue of resting their leading pace bowler Ali Khan, Fawad’s last two overs were held back even as the rest of the bowling unit was torn to shreds by both the Guyana youngsters. Fawad was brought back for his third over in the 14th, and he dismissed Hetmyer, but Walton clubbed a full toss for six the next ball to level the scores. Rutherford then ended the match on the first ball of the 15th.Both Ali Khan and Sunil Narine will be back for the playoff contest after putting their legs up on this occasion, but the Amazon Warriors gave enough reasons on this occasion to not take them lightly on home soil in Tuesday’s Qualifier 1.

Following the disappointing tenure of Michael Beale, Rangers have had to pick themselves up, dust themselves off and start a new era under former AS Monaco boss Philippe Clement. So far, the Belgian has proven his expertise by remaining unbeaten in his opening four games in charge, which included a 4-0 victory over Hibernian and a 5-0 thrashing of Dundee in the Scottish Premiership.
Whilst things begin to fall into place on the pitch, though, Rangers are still seeking deals to calm the chaos away from Ibrox. Adding to their woes, reports linking the Gers with one particular off-field appointment have since been denied by Mark Hendry of Football Scotland.
Rangers sporting director update
Rangers have been actively searching for a new sporting director this season without enjoying great success. They were briefly linked with a move for Brighton & Hove Albion head of recruitment Sam Jewell, but failed to convince the Seagulls man to leave the Premier League side, who are in the middle of their most successful period in the club's history.
With the January transfer window approaching, the Scottish giants must solve their problem as soon as possible. The last thing they'll want is to head into another window without a leading man, who could help them avoid repeating deals for struggling players. The good news doesn't look likely to come anytime soon, however, with reports suggesting that Stuart Webber is on the Gers' wanted list quickly shut down.
According to Football Scotland's Hendry, Webber will not become the Rangers sporting director and there is currently no interest from the Gers. Instead, the Norwich City recruitment chief has been linked with a move to become Leeds United's head of recruitment, as he edges closer to a Carrow Road exit. The report puts the Scottish side back to square one in the hunt to finally land a sporting director.
Why Rangers need a sporting director
Former Monaco boss Philippe Clement.
Rangers proved exactly why they need a sporting director during the summer transfer window, with a number of arrivals simply yet to show any signs of working out to leave Clement plenty of problems to solve. A sporting director would have, in theory, put together a far wiser transfer plan. We've seen how clubs such as Liverpool and Brighton have benefitted from the likes of Michael Edwards and Dan Ashworth, who is now enjoying even greater success at Newcastle United. So, why shouldn't Rangers follow the lead of such clubs?
Already five points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership this season, Rangers cannot afford to get things wrong yet again in the January transfer window – their winter reinforcements could make or break their campaign. Clement's start has shown plenty of promise and it looks increasingly likely that those at Ibrox have potentially got their next impressive manager. But he must receive backing and the right players for his system.
As January approaches, it's up to Clement to maintain his side's recent form on the pitch and hand those away from Ibrox more time to finally land a sporting director in the coming months of the campaign.

Aaron Finch and Travis Head likely starters for Pakistan Tests, with Michael Neser also making a strong case, according to captain Tim Paine
ESPNcricinfo staff28-Sep-2018Australia have pencilled in Aaron Finch and Travis Head for Test debuts against Pakistan next month, with Michael Neser also making a strong case for inclusion, according to captain Tim Paine. All three were included in the Australian XI to play Pakistan A in a four-day warm-up game in Dubai, starting on Saturday.Paine is preparing to lead Australia in the Test team’s first assignment since Steven Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were banned for their part in the Cape Town ball-tampering scandal – absences which leave a particular hole in the tourists’ batting. Finch, an experienced white-ball opener, is set to make a Test bow alongside Matt Renshaw at the top of the order, with Head, who also offers a spin-bowling option, likely to bat at No. 5 or 6.The team named to play Pakistan A is “pretty close to what we’ll go with” for the first Test in Dubai, said Paine, although he suggested players outside the XI could still make a case for inclusion. Neser and Mitchell Starc will provide the pace options, supported by Paine’s newly elected vice-captain, Mitchell Marsh, while slow left-armer Jon Holland has been selected to partner Australia’s premier spinner, Nathan Lyon.Aus XI to play Pak A
Tim Paine (capt), Aaron Finch, Matthew Renshaw, Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, Travis Head, Mitch Marsh, Michael Neser, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Jon Holland
Ashton Agar has also now joined up with the squad, and could come into contention if conditions dictate, while the veteran Peter Siddle, who last played a Test in November, is the other option to take the new ball with Starc. Paine called Neser, who made his one-day debut on Australia’s tour of England in June, a “really, really skilful all-round cricketer” and an “exciting option”. “He’s someone in these conditions who could thrive,” Paine said.”The squad is really flexible,” he added. “When we get to the first Test and we assess the conditions, we can play two quicks, three spinners, whatever scenario’s presented by the Test wicket, we’ll have a team that we think will do well in those conditions.”The process to appoint Paine’s deputies, Marsh and recuperating quick Josh Hazlewood, has been indicative in the change of direction initiated by Justin Langer, who replaced Darren Lehmann as head coach after the tour of South Africa. Marsh and Hazlewood were among those put forward for leadership roles by their team-mates, and then selected as vice-captains after making presentations to a panel including Langer, selection chairman Trevor Hohns, and CA board director Mark Taylor.”Really happy with them,” Paine said. “Both are really trusted, respected guys in our team, both really deserve it. We went through a really rigorous process to get the role, so really happy for both of them.”I think it was really important to have the players’ buy-in. Everyone went through that process, myself included. I think it was good for the players to be able to voice their opinion and have a say in who leads them, and it was also great for the guys that have been nominated to go through the process and be interviewed. It’s something we don’t normally do and a good experience.”Justin Langer talks to his players at practice•Getty Images
While unlikely in practice, Paine suggested it was theoretically possible for him to have lost his position as captain if he were not among the six – which also included Finch, Head and Alex Carey – who received the most nominations from the group.”Obviously I came across the captaincy in not-ideal circumstances, so to go back into the pool and be voted back out by your peers is great,” Paine said. “It means a lot to all three of us that we’ve been voted in by our peers.”I’d imagine so [on the possibility of losing the captaincy], probably wouldn’t have been my call. We took it very seriously. The players had their say and then there was process after that as well. It wasn’t done to tick boxes it was to make sure we have the right people leading this team going forward.”As well as regenerating the culture within the team, Paine reiterated that Australia were intent on changing their tactics in an attempt to win away to Asian opposition for the first time in seven years. On Australia’s last visit to the UAE, in 2014, they lost 2-0 – crushed by 221 runs and 356 runs in the two Tests – and Langer has challenged this squad to “leave the egos at home” in order to practise a more attritional approach to batting than on previous tours.”Australia teams of the past haven’t had huge success here in Dubai, in Asia in general, so it’s an exciting opportunity,” Paine said. “We’ve got a bit of a different group, some younger guys have come in. Big challenge but a really exciting opportunity, we’ve been working really hard on the style of cricket we want to play over here in the last week. We’ve got a bit more training and a tour game to come to keep nailing it down. If we do everything we’ve talked about, we’ll be more than competitive.”We’ve spoke about little ways we change. Traditionally, Australian teams have been really aggressive and tried to take the games to opposition. I think over here in particular, you’ve got to be really patient and I guess try and stay in the game for as long as you game. We know that the first three days here can move really slowly, the pitches are generally really flat, then the last two days, it can start to spin and reverse and the games in the back end move really quickly.”It’s about being really patient, really disciplined. JL spoke a little bit about leaving our egos at home, particularly as a batting group, and being prepared to bat for a long, long time. If we can do that we can have some success.”
When Julen Lopetegui left Wolverhampton Wanderers just before the Premier League season got underway, it would have been easy for the Midlands club to capitulate. But since the Spaniard's departure and Gary O'Neil's arrival, Wolves have looked more and more comfortable again in England's top flight and look on course to avoid a relegation battle.
What's been most impressive is their rediscovered ability to cause shocks at Molinuex, defeating Premier League champions Manchester City and scoring two late goals to turn the game on its head to hand Tottenham Hotspur back-to-back defeats for the first time under Ange Postecoglou. Perhaps bringing their momentum to a slight pause, however, one January sale could be set to deal Wolves a frustrating blow.
Wolves transfer news
Wolves weren't the busiest club during the summer transfer window and saw their headlines stolen by the departures of Ruben Neves and Matheus Nunes to leave them briefly depleted in the middle of the park. And that makes their start under O'Neil all the more impressive. The former Bournemouth boss, who was unlucky to leave the Cherries after keeping them up last season, has crucially got the best out of Pedro Neto once again and has benefitted from the form of Matheus Cunha. One player who looks unlikely to get the O'Neil improvement, however, is Goncalo Guedes.
According to Estadio Deportivo, Villarreal have set their sights on Guedes ahead of a potential January loan move. The Portugal international has been out on loan at Benfica since January, but has struggled with injury problems, game time and form. Now, Villarreal are reportedly set to offer Guedes a way out of what has been a nightmare spell in Portugal.
It remains to be seen just what Wolves' stance on sending Guedes to the La Liga side, who are reportedly willing to cover his wages. Given his lack of place under O'Neil, on paper there doesn't seem to be much standing in the way of the transfer taking place, though reports in Portugal have claimed that he is set to stay put for the season.
"Great" Guedes needs fresh start
Guedes has become a shadow of the player once seen catching the eye at Valencia. It just simply hasn't happened for the winger since leaving La Liga and a return to Spain could be exactly what he needs. Guedes' stats during his time in Spain's top flight speak for themselves. The 26-year-old scored 28 goals and assisted a further 28 whilst appearing a total of 146 times. Still young enough to turn things around, the former Valencia man could yet revive his career at Villarreal if given the opportunity to do so by Wolves.
Goncalo Guedes for Wolves
At his best, Guedes has been at the centre of praise, including from former Paris Saint-Germain forward Pauleta, who told the club's official website, via ESPN: "I know him very well. He plays for Portugal's under-21 side. I watched him grow up through his club and national team matches. He is a great talent — he is physically gifted and technically extremely talented. On top of that, he is a really nice guy off the pitch. He can bring a lot to PSG and he has all it takes to impose himself in Paris. He will grow and continue to progress."

Ele marcou seis gols no período.
Glasgow Rangers made the decision to part ways with head coach Michael Beale at the start of last month and completed a swoop to bring in Philippe Clement as his replacement.
The Belgian tactician has enjoyed a terrific start to life in Glasgow with a return of six wins and one draw from his opening seven matches in charge in all competitions.
He already has a League Cup final, against Aberdeen, to look forward to next month and could secure his first piece of silverware in Glasgow, after Beale failed to win any trophies during his tenure at Ibrox.
Glasgow Rangers managerPhilippe Clement.
It would be an impressive accomplishment by Clement when you consider that the former Monaco manager is yet to be able to bring in his own players to bolster his squad, as he arrived after the summer transfer window slammed shut.
The upcoming January transfer window will be his first opportunity to dip into the market and the Light Blues have already been touted with a move for one of their former players.
Rangers transfer news – Ryan Kent
A recent report from TEAMtalk named Rangers as one of the clubs keeping an eye on Ryan Kent's situation as he has been made available for a winter exit.
The outlet claimed that Fenerbahce are prepared to send the 27-year-old winger out on loan for the second half of the 2023/24 campaign after his poor start to the season.
It is stated that the Turkish giants are willing to part ways with the English flop and that they would also be open to including an option to buy next summer for a fee within the region of £6m.
Former Rangers winger Ryan Kent.
TEAMtalk have revealed that the ex-Gers attacker has struggled to adapt to life in Turkey and is yet to adjust to his new teammates and environment, which now looks set to lead to a premature end to his spell with Fenerbahce.
Rangers, who watched on as Kent departed on a free transfer to make the switch to the Turkish giants at the end of last season, are now eyeing him up as a surprise signing in January, less than a year on from his exit from Glasgow.
However, they could face some stiff competition for his signature at English sides Leeds United and Bournemouth are both said to be keen on the ex-Liverpool gem.
The latter are currently competing in the Premier League and the former are pursuing promotion to the top-flight of English football, which could be an attractive prospect for Kent, who has already been there and done it in Scotland.
If Clement and Rangers are able to win the race for his signature, though, then they could land a big upgrade on current forward Scott Wright, who has been unable to provide a consistent attacking threat out wide.
Scott Wright's Rangers statistics
The 26-year-old lightweight arrived at Ibrox from fellow Scottish side Aberdeen midway through the 2020/21 campaign and put pen to paper on a contract until the summer of 2025.
Steven Gerrard brought him to Glasgow after the winger racked up two goals and five assists in 20 appearances in all competitions for the Dons during the first half of the season.
Wright had an unspectacular start to life with the Light Blues as he ended that term with one goal and two assists in 13 appearances, as Rangers went on to win the Scottish Premiership title.
The Scottish forward then enjoyed a solid first full season with the club as he produced seven goals and three assists in 37 matches in all competitions during the 2021/22 campaign.
Rangers winger Scott Wright.
However, his form went downhill the following term as Wright ended the 2022/23 season with a return of zero goals and two assists in 34 matches for the Gers, which included one assist in 23 Premiership outings.
So far during the current campaign, the ex-Aberdeen star has managed one goal and zero assists in ten appearances under Beale and Clement combined.
This means that Wright has a dismal record of one goal and provided two assists in his last 44 games for Rangers since the start of last season. He has averaged one direct goal contribution every 14.7 matches during that period, which is a woeful return for an attacking player.
The Gers lightweight has not offered enough in the final third to be relied upon as a regular option for a team that wants to compete for multiple trophies and in European competitions.
Ryan Kent's Rangers statistics
Whereas, Kent proved himself to be a superb attacker for the Light Blues throughout his time in Scotland and he could arrive as a big upgrade on Wright if the club can pull off a shock swoop to bring him back to Ibrox.
The 27-year-old ace has zero goals and zero assists in seven Super Lig games for Fenerbahce but that should not be a concern for the Gers as they already know exactly what he is capable of in Scottish football.

As you can see from the table above, the Gerrard signing enjoyed a fantastic spell in Glasgow and was able to chip in with goals and assists from a wide position.
