Barbados ensured a second-place finish, beating nearest rivals Jamaica by 26 runs at Kensington Oval. A five-wicket haul on the final day from Jomel Warrican sealed the narrow win, after a blazing half-century from Fabian Allen had threatened to snatch the game away.Jamaica, chasing 341, resumed on 114 for 1. Chadwick Walton (93) and Trevon Griffith (53) stretched their overnight second-wicket stand from 89 to 137 before Barbados dismissed both in the space of eight balls. Jamaica’s slide continued all the way to 251 for 8, with Warrican and fellow left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn taking the bulk of the wickets, before Allen hit back. He added 44 for the ninth wicket with Nikita Miller (4) and 19 for the tenth with Jerome Taylor (6*) before Warrican dismissed him for 60 off 35 balls (3×4, 6×6).Warrican aside, Barbados’ biggest match-winner was Justin Greaves, who scored 114 and took three wickets with his medium-pace to give his side a 113-run first-innings advantage. Sent in to bat, Barbados had been in trouble at 98 for 5 before Kenroy Williams (82), Greaves and Ashley Nurse (60) led a recovery to 377. In response, Jamaica folded for 224 with only Devon Thomas (59) and Griffith (39) getting past 30.Jamaica fought back by rolling Barbados over for 187 in the second innings, with Allen and Miller picking up four apiece, but a target of 341 would prove to be just beyond them.An 11-wicket haul from the legspinner Imran Khan gave Trinidad & Tobago victory by an innings and 17 runs against Leeward Islands in St Kitts. Imran took five wickets in Leewards’ first innings and six when they followed on, after rapid hundreds from Yannic Cariah (196, 261b, 15×4, 5×6) and Tion Webster (109, 116b, 9×4, 5×6) had given T&T an imposing first-innings total of 553.Leewards began well in reply, with each of their top three batsmen – Montcin Hodge, Chesney Hughes and Keacy Carty – scoring half-centuries, but they slumped dramatically from 223 for 2, losing their last eight wickets for 76 runs. Hodge (96*) carried his bat through Leewards’ second innings, with only Carty (54) and Akeem Saunders (41) giving him any support as Imran and the offspinner Bryan Charles ran through to bowl them out for 237.

Aston Villa: Emery Could Bolster Luiz With £26m "Warrior" Arrival

Aston Villa are reportedly interested in Barcelona midfielder Franck Kessie as the Catalan giants bid to offload talent due to financial pressures.

Unai Emery and Monchi are more than familiar with identifying talent in LaLiga, with the two holding extensive experience in Spain which could now be transferred to the Midlands.

With Pau Torres reportedly en route to Villa Park, the Villans could pull off a masterclass in exploring Kessie, who could seriously bolster Emery’s midfield.

Could Aston Villa sign Franck Kessie?

Reports from Spain claim that Emery is an admirer of the Ivory Coast international, claiming that the Spaniard ‘wants’ the midfielder in his squad.

It’s also thought that the Spanish champions would not be open to selling the 26-year-old for a price below €30m (£26m), with the report speculating that negotiations ‘are open’ between the two clubs.

Valued by FootballTransfers at €36.8m (£31.4m), Monchi could capitalise on Barcelona’s struggles by snatching the talent at a lesser price than his market value.

How good is Franck Kessie?

Having been previously lauded as a “warrior” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the Ivory Coast machine has worked his way to being regarded as a top midfielder in Europe by developing his career in Italy.

Signed by Barcelona last summer from AC Milan, the 26-year-old titan was initially signed by Milan on a two-year-loan deal with an obligation to buy from Atalanta, however after one season in LaLiga, Kessie could be on the move again.

Making just seven league starts in his debut campaign in Spain, the midfielder averaged just 36 minutes per game placing him further away from contention for a starting spot at the soon-to-be revamped Camp Nou.

Barcelona’s financial pressures off the pitch could come as a plus for Villa, who had Kessie on their radar prior to the January window as the Spanish giants were speculated to have interest in Douglas Luiz.

douglas-luiz-aston-villa-premier-league

Monchi could win the battle for the Ouragahio-born gem by capturing his signature to play alongside Luiz at Villa Park.

Deployable as a more attack-minded central midfielder, Emery could unearth a stylish pivot between the Barcelona whiz and the Brazilian, who has been defensively solid for Villa in the Premier League.

The 2020/21 Serie A campaign was a dominant one for Kessie in the final third, highlighting his ability going forward, scoring 13 goals and registering six assists for Milan, via Transfermarkt.

Displaying a passing accuracy of 85.6% in LaLiga last season, the 6-foot midfielder excels in all areas required in the engine room, averaging 1.36 tackles per 90 as well as being an assured passer.

Also hailed as being a player that “controls and leads” in midfield by writer Maxi Angelo, Villa could equip Luiz with a similarly rounded talent, after the 25-year-old shone during Emery’s first season at Villa Park.

With an average match rating of 7.10 last term, the Brazilian gem was a reliable figure in midfield in claret and blue, and could have his ability furthered with the presence of Kessie.

Having registered as many as six goals and six assists for the Villans last campaign, Luiz is similarly effective in the final third to Kessie, as well as being defensively competent.

Winning 52% of his total duels during the 2022/23 Premier League season, Emery could add a similar calibre of player to partner the Brazilian to allow him to explore new levels to his individual game.

It could be a smart move for Monchi to explore the availability of Kessie, who could depart the Catalan giants for a slim price this summer.

Tharanga puts improved fielding down to fearlessness

Sri Lanka captain Upul Tharanga said that fearlessness helped his team tighten up their fielding, after their athletic defence of 280 in the third ODI

Sri Lanka put up one of their better fielding performances to level the three-match series against Bangladesh•Associated Press

Sri Lanka captain Upul Tharanga said that fearlessness helped his team tighten up their fielding, after their athletic defence of 280 in the third ODI.Sri Lanka have been routinely woeful in the field over the past two years. The standards hit new lows in 2017, in series against South Africa and Australia, as well as Bangladesh’s ongoing tour. The performance in the third ODI was a sharp departure from what had been a worrying trend. A high-energy effort in the infield was backed up by clinical work at the boundaries. Sri Lanka did miss one chance – letting a catch pass between keeper and slip in the first over – but did not commit any major mistakes after that.”The way we fielded today was really good – everyone was chasing the ball and diving and that’s the way we should be fielding,” Tharanga said. “We were sloppy in the first game. We gave away too many runs. Not only the first game, I don’t think we fielded well in the last two series. The thing that we discussed was to not to be afraid to do mistakes. Sometimes, when we field, we are bit reluctant and worried whether we will miss catches and we position ourselves too deep.”Before the match, cricket manager Asanka Gurusinha had said the team trialled a new training method for fielding, through which they hoped to better replicate match conditions. Early indications are that the new methods have had some impact.”If you practice those things only it works out in matches,” Tharanga said. “There were some good training sessions after the loss. We have attracted lot of criticism that we are not good a fielding side. But we wanted to prove that wrong. We’ve got to keep doing what we did today and consistently field this well.”Alongside the fielding, Tharanga also credited Thisara Perera’s batting for the win. Sri Lanka were in danger of limping through the final overs when Thisara arrived at the crease with the score at 194 for 5. But he played himself in – venturing no boundaries off his first 19 deliveries – before accelerating in the 45th over. He eventually wound up with 52 runs off 40 balls, and was named the player of the match. He had also hit a rapid half-century in the first match.”I thought Thisara Perera was exceptional today,” Tharanga said. “He showed lot of maturity during his knock. He took his time and finished the innings well. He understood his role, and he did this throughout this series. He realised that he needed to come up with big efforts. Today, we were in a tough position. He was the only recognised batter, and his approach was good – he showed a lot of responsibility.”One weakness that has persisted through the series, however, is Sri Lanka’s running between the wickets. Sri Lanka lost two batsmen to run outs at the SSC, and of those Dinesh Chandimal’s dismissal was especially unusual. Though he grounded the bat after completing a second run, he lifted it as his body crossed the crease, at which point the bails were dislodged. Tharanga was himself run out in strange fashion during the second ODI in Dambulla. He took off for an easy single after the wicketkeeper had misfielded the ball, but was caught by surprise when Mahmudullah threw down the stumps to find him short of his ground.”My run out in the second game and Chandi’s run out today – you can’t let those things happen,” Tharanga said. “It looked as if we were too casual in our approach. If you take ODIs, you can excuse the run outs towards the end of an innings when you are trying to score quickly. But silly mistakes like these are not good enough.”

CA still striving for Perth stadium Ashes

Racing against time, Cricket Australia are trying to get the Burswood ground ready to host a Test match next summer

Daniel Brettig08-May-2017An Ashes debut for Perth’s new stadium remains in Cricket Australia’s sights, with the chief executive James Sutherland to head west this week for meetings aimed at getting the 60,000 capacity Burswood development up and running in time for the third match of next summer’s five-Test series. On the day tickets went on sale to the general public for all venues but Perth, Sutherland said he was in continuing talks with stadium management – helmed by former CA executive Mike McKenna – the West Australian government and the builders to see if the precinct can be ready in time for the Ashes. This is despite reports out of Perth last month indicating the state government had all but ruled out the possibility of the Test being played in the new stadium, which features drop-in pitches. A January ODI between Australia and England appears the more likely time for the unveiling.”Either way we’re very optimistic that we’ll be playing cricket at the new stadium in 2017-18, but we’re hopeful it will be a Test match because I think people will come from everywhere to be a part of the event,” Sutherland said. “We know there’s latent demand in the UK just waiting for an announcement and they’re ready to go, because Perth’s just that little bit closer to the UK and I know it’s a place that English travellers love to get to.”We’re looking towards the end of this month to make a decision. We want to get tickets on sale as soon as possible, give everyone plenty of notice of what needs to get in order, but certainly we’ll continue to have conversations, I’m in Perth this week to have some conversations with relevant people and we’ll hopefully, by the end of this month, be able to make announcements about when tickets go on sale.”The stadium’s management – which also includes CA’s former head of events Chris Loftus-Hills – has remained steadfast that the venue is intended only to be ready in time for next year’s AFL season. Australia have hosted Ashes Tests at incomplete stadiums before, most recently during the Adelaide Oval redevelopment, when the majority of the ground was available for play.File photo: The new stadium in Burswood is expected to hold a capacity of 60,000 people and will feature drop-in pitches•Getty Images

“From what I understand the stadium will be fully complete and ready to go [when it hosts its first match],” Sutherland said. “It’s very much about the logistics and planning. The completion dates for the stadium actually work pretty well for us, but at the same time a Test match in Perth at the new stadium would be a huge event, and there’s little room for things to go wrong in terms of teething problems that are in some ways perhaps inevitable.”We’re really optimistic about the way in which the event could be staged in the new stadium, we’ve got great confidence in that, but we also understand that through government, through the stadium manager and also the builders, there are a lot of logistics we’re not necessarily across that need to be worked through.”We’d love to see the Test match be the opening event for the new stadium, but to some extent that’s out of our control. We’ll just put our best foot forward and try to impress that upon the powers that be in Perth.”CA recently named Antonia Beggs as the governing body’s new head of match operations and events, after she had previously served at the head of client relations for the European PGA tour and as Championship director of the Ryder Cup. After relocating from Britain, Beggs is expected to start in her new role in mid-July.

Newcastle: TalkSPORT reporter drops interesting Saint-Maximin claim

Newcastle United winger Allan Saint-Maximin "is going to be sold" this summer, with his destination likely being Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, but the fee won't be "too big", claims journalist Alex Crook.

Is Allan Saint-Maximin leaving Newcastle United?

It's been a strong transfer window for the Magpies this summer, and while the club have only made two signings so far, one was massively significant.

The arrival of Italian international Sandro Tonali from Serie A giants AC Milan, his boyhood club, felt like a seismic transfer for the Premier League, representing Newcastle's true arrival among the country's big boys.

Sandro Tonali, midfielder for AC Milan (soon-to-be Newcastle United)

That said, the club have yet to make any significant acquisitions since his arrival, primarily due to concern over their standing regarding FFP regulations.

In a bid to raise more capital to spend on players, the club will have to sell some of their own, and the first name on the chopping block looks to be French winger Saint-Maximin.

Despite being a popular player amongst fans, the former Nice ace has been touted for a move to the free-spending Saudi Pro League this summer.

Still, with Newcastle's ownership situation, both sides will avoid raising too much suspicion with a more reasonable transfer fee, per journalist Alex Crook.

saint-maximin-newcastle-premier-league-transfers

He explained the situation live on TalkSPORT, which was then posted to their YouTube channel:

"It's Allan Saint-Maximin who is going to be sold. They're in talks with Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia, ironically owned by PIF, the investment arm behind Newcastle, so you'd think it should be a fairly straightforward transaction.

"It will be interesting what type of fee changes hands because, obviously, if it gets too big, then maybe questions might be asked."I think they will be conscious of that, and that is why it looks like Saint-Maximin is going to change hands for less, say, than Fabinho, who we know has a £40m price tag."

Who have Newcastle United been linked to this summer?

Despite the lack of signings being completed in the Northeast, the Toon have still been linked with a whole host of players from across the Premier League and beyond.

The player with their name attached to Eddie Howe's side more than any other at the moment seems to be Leicester City star, Harvey Barnes.

Leicester City's Harvey Barnes

According to the Daily Mail, Barnes has been a long-term target for the club, but the Foxes' valuation of £40m is currently more than they can spend without first offloading players like Saint-Maximin. The Toon will want to hurry on this one, however, as the Mail have also confirmed that both West Ham United and Manchester United hold an interest in the 25-year-old.

From attack to defence now, and Howe's side are currently in talks with Southampton over their dynamic young fullback, Tino Livramento.

According to Football Insider, the two teams have been in discussions for some time about the player, and the Toon have already had a £15m bid rejected by the Saints, but not to be put off, are preparing a new bid worth a reported £25m to secure the 20-year-old's signature.

Tino Livramento Newcastle target

Ultimately, it looks like Newcastle have certainly got grand plans for the transfer window this summer, but many of those plans are contingent on significant income from player sales of their own.

£88.5m Signings Speaks Out On Initial Chelsea Struggles

Since making the move to Chelsea for a reported £88.5m in January, Mykhailo Mudryk has failed to live up to the price tag at Stamford Bridge, failing to score a single Premier League goal, as the Blues fell to a bottom-half finish.

The Ukraine winger wasn't helped by the chaos of Graham Potter's tenure, followed by the failure of interim boss Frank Lampard, in a run that saw Chelsea fail to win the legend's first six games in charge.

For an £88.5m fee, though, the expectations were far higher for Mudryk. He simply did not live up to the hype, however.

Nonetheless, at 22, he has plenty of time to burst into life at Stamford Bridge. And, after impressing in pre-season under Mauricio Pochettino so far – and showing glimpses of his top talent with Ukraine's U21 side at the European Championship – Chelsea could finally have the player they paid for.

The winger recently spoke about his initial struggles, and what's to come.

What did Mykhailo Mudryk say?

Speaking after Chelsea's 4-3 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion in pre-season, in which he scored, Mudryk said, via ESPN: "I feel happy for all the work I put into this goal.

"It is not all my potential. It is only 20 percent. I feel good because playing under Pochettino, our manager, it is nice, it is enjoyable and it is a new team which is also enjoyable."

Claiming that he's only at 20 percent potential, the Blues have themselves a player ready to take the Premier League by storm next season. Praising Pochettino already too for the role he's played behind the scenes in helping him improve, we could finally see the winger burst into life as they build a relationship.

As the chaos dies down at the London club, and Pochettino settles into life at the club, Mudryk may well do the same.

His goal against Brighton was particularly impressive, orchestrating the move, before finishing it off in style, volleying home into the bottom left for his first Chelsea goal.

Mykhailo-Mudryk

What is the market value of Mykhailo Mudryk?

After struggling last season, Mudryk isn't quite worth the reported £88.5m that the Blues paid for him back in January. Naturally, his value decreased.

Now, according to Transfermarkt, the winger is worth just €50m (£43.04m), which is less than half of what Chelsea initially splashed out for his signature back in January.

The hope will be that Mudryk realises his potential under Pochettino in the coming months.

It will certainly help if the club maintains some stability after a rollercoaster ride in the last campaign, which ended with little to no joy.

The Blues' main goal will be to get back into the Champions League after such a disappointing finish last time out, which saw them fail to qualify for Europe altogether.

It will be difficult given the competition in England's top flight, however, with Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and Newcastle United all vying for a place.

If Mudryk can hit top form, though, then Chelsea may just unlock themselves an unexpected talisman to lead the way in the coming months. Those in London could finally get the Eden Hazard replacement that they have so desperately been longing for.

It will certainly be an interesting season to watch.
