Leeds: Jack Harrison open to new deal

Leeds United winger Jack Harrison will sign a new contract ‘if the right terms are put in front of him’, journalist Pete O’Rourke has told GiveMeSport.

The lowdown

The 25-year-old, who is under contract at Elland Road until the end of next season, is attracting some covetous glances.

As per The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Newcastle made two bids for the Englishman during the summer transfer window, the second of which was worth more than £20m.

Scott Wilson of The Northern Echo reported late last month that, with the Magpies expected to return for the winger in January, Leeds are hopeful of extending Harrison’s deal before the year is out.

The latest

O’Rourke says that Leeds are determined to fend off any interest in Harrison and secure his commitment, and he believes that the player will be receptive to the club’s proposal, provided they make a suitable offer to him.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “They don’t want to sell and they want to tie him down to a new contract, so they are showing their faith in the player as well.

“Jack Harrison does seem to be quite happy at Leeds United and, if the right terms are put in front of him, I’m sure he would be happy to sign them.”

The verdict

There were a couple of big-name departures from Elland Road last summer, with Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips joining Barcelona and Manchester City respectively for a combined £100m.

In light of those exits, it will surely be a relief for Leeds fans to hear optimism around the possibility of Harrison staying put.

As per FBRef, Harrison is only earning £15,000 per week in Yorkshire right now, which leaves him well outside the club’s top bracket. He arguably deserves to be among the highest-paid players at Leeds, having been directly involved in 29 goals (scoring 17 and setting up 12) in 78 Premier League matches since they were promoted.

Leeds YouTuber Connor McGilligan says that the winger has been ‘absolutely superb’ this season, stepping up following the exit of Raphinha, so the Whites ought to reward him with a contract offer which suitably reflects his contribution to the team.

Gerrard must unleash Buendia vs Forest

Aston Villa will be looking to continue their recent upturn in form when they take on Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Monday evening.

Steven Gerrard was under a lot of pressure as Villa boss but has seen his side pick up five points from the last three fixtures, although the draw against Manchester City was far more creditable than last weekend’s stalemate against 10-man Leeds United.

Despite holding a man advantage against their hosts in Yorkshire, Gerrard’s side rarely looked like scoring and it seems clear that a creative spark is needed if the Villans are going to pick up three points when they face Steve Cooper’s struggling Reds on Monday.

To do that, Gerrard should unleash Emi Buendia from the start at the City Ground, with the Argentinian having struggled for regular game time so far this season.

The former Norwich City man joined Villa in the summer of 2021 but has struggled to live up to his club-record fee, with just five goals and seven assists in 46 appearances, having managed 15 goals and 17 assists in his final season with the Canaries.

Buendia has struck one strike to his name in the Premier League in eight appearances this season but has only started twice, so deserves his chance to feature from the start.

Only Ashley Young and Jacob Ramsay have averaged more key passes than the Argentine this season, which suggests that he has the creativity in his locker to help end Villa’s woes in front of goal.

Despite Leon Bailey and Philippe Coutinho both having more game time this season, they have both averaged just 0.6 key passes per game and have only two goal contributions between them, so surely it is time for Buendia to start.

WhoScored suggests that the 26-year-old excels at through balls and playing key passes, possessing pretty much all the attributes you would hope an attacking midfielder would have, with long shots, finishing, dribbling and set-pieces also listed as his strengths.

Gerrard was full of praise for the £75k-per-week earner after a strong run of form last season, saying:

“He’s a tenacious little character and player, he’s got amazing talent and he’s got stronger and stronger with each training session.

“He believes he can only get better, I have that type of belief in him.”

With the Villa fans no doubt still questioning whether Gerrard is the man to bring European football to Villa Park in the future, the Liverpool legend can get the fans back on side and potentially rocking by unleashing Buendia from the start on Monday, as he can be a big difference-maker and a joy to watch when he is at his creative best.

Newcastle: Alexander Isak suffers setback

A worrying injury update has emerged on Newcastle United centre-forward Alexander Isak…

What’s the talk?

Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope has revealed that Eddie Howe will be without the £60m signing for the next two matches, having missed the clash with Manchester United shortly after this claim, after breaking down in training.

Hope said: “Exclusive: Newcastle’s Alexander Isak suffers setback in recovery from thigh injury after pulling up with same problem. £60m striker was nearing return but now set to miss at least next 3 games after fresh blow. More news awaited on full timescale.”

The accompanying article states that the club expected him to be available for selection this week before he suffered a reoccurrence of his knock recently.

Huge blow

This could be a huge blow for Howe as Isak was a club-record signing in the summer and enjoyed a superb start to his career at St. James’ Park by scoring two goals in three Premier League appearances.

Back in August, the head coach heaped praise on the forward and backed him to hit the ground running in England as he said:

“He has the mix of qualities I like in a forward. He scores goals, he has pace, technical ability, dribbling ability and he’s got a bit of an X-factor about him.

“The English game will suit his profile, he’s a really good athlete and technically really good so he’s got a whole host of things going for him and his best years are still ahead of him.”

Isak’s first few performances for the Magpies proved the former Bournemouth boss right as he found the back of the net against Liverpool and the Cherries, whilst also creating three chances for his teammates in that time.

The Sweden international joined Newcastle after scoring 23 goals in his last two full La Liga seasons combined for Real Sociedad and his fast start in front of goal in the Premier League suggests that he has the quality to replicate that form on Tyneside.

He has the potential to be a prolific number nine for Howe and that is why this injury setback is a big blow for the head coach as it now remains to be seen when he will be available for selection again.

Callum Wilson is currently fit and starting games for the club but he has missed a whopping 43 competitive games due to injury since the start of the 2020/21 campaign and this suggests that there is a reasonable chance that he suffers a knock before Isak is back.

That would leave the club with Chris Wood as their only number nine to select and he has scored just twice in 25 league matches since joining from Burnley in January.

Therefore, losing Isak for an undetermined period of time is a seismic blow for Newcastle and Howe will be hoping that it does not drag on any longer than Hope’s claim of a minimum of three matches.

Bonucci would "definitely improve" Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur’s reported transfer target Leonardo Bonucci would “definitely improve” Antonio Conte’s defence.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Pete O’Rourke, who stated his belief in a recent interview with Football FanCast that, following reports claiming that Spurs are interested in a move for the Juventus centre-back in the January transfer window, the 35-year-old would be an improvement upon Conte’s current options at the back – despite the defender’s advancing years.

Regarding Tottenham’s potential signing of the Italy international, the journalist said: “Bonucci is a world-class player. Maybe he’s coming to the end of his career but he’s still a classy operator.

“He’s got a whole wealth of experience at club and international level as well and I’m sure, even if it was a short-term signing, he’d be somebody who would definitely improve that Spurs defence.”

“World-class”

While it is undeniable that, at 35, Bonucci is coming towards the end of his career at the very top level of the professional game, it is nevertheless easy to see why O’Rourke believes that the centre-back would be a world-class signing for Conte to bring to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this winter.

Indeed, despite his advancing years, the £13m-rated Italian was in fantastic defensive form over his 24 Serie A appearances last time out, helping his side keep four clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.1 interceptions, 0.6 tackles, 3.4 clearances and winning 2.9 duels – at a success rate of 54% – per game.

The centre-back also chipped in for Juve in an attacking capacity, scoring a hugely impressive five goals and registering one assist, in addition to taking an average of 0.7 shots, making 0.5 key passes and playing 6.3 long balls per fixture, returns which are rather remarkable for a centre-back.

These numbers saw the 118-cap international average an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.08, ranking him as Massimiliano Allegri’s joint fourth-best performer in the top flight of Italian football in 2021/22.

Furthermore, with Bonucci having won nine Serie A titles, four Coppa Italia titles, five Supercoppa Italiana titles and one European Championship over the course of his club and international career, it is clear that the £200k-per-week talent is a proven winner – something that Tottenham’s squad is very much lacking at present.

As such, it is easy to see why O’Rourke believes that the Italian titan would represent an improvement upon Conte’s current options at the back, as despite being in the twilight of his career, the 35-year-old is still quite clearly one of the best and most experienced central defenders currently playing the game.

Leeds got lucky with Charles De Ketelaere

Leeds United were linked with all manner of players over the summer, with Jesse Marsch desperate to stamp his mark on a side that narrowly avoided relegation the season prior.

The American also had to contend with the departures of Kalvin Phillips and their top goal scorer from last season, Raphinha.

It was clear that the Brazilian posed a much tougher challenge to replace, as Marc Roca and Tyler Adams were early signings that were expected to shoulder the burden left by their midfield maestro.

Whilst Luis Sinisterra did sign for £21m, there was an ongoing saga throughout the summer that suggested that the Whites might swoop for Charles De Ketelaere.

In the end, the Belgian opted to make a £27m move to AC Milan.

However, since then the 21-year-old has been decidedly unimpressive for the Italian heavyweights.

With just one assist and no goals in his first 14 games, he is currently costing them £27m for every goal contribution at the moment.

What seemed like a huge transfer miss at the time, after he had scored 14 and assisted seven in 33 Jupiler Pro League games last season, his start to this campaign suggests that maybe they got away with one.

His manager Stefano Pioli has come to his defence, although did admit to him being “a little down in the dumps”.

For a side like Leeds, who are also struggling, this youngster would likely have wilted further under the pressure.

Marsch’s side sit in the relegation zone after 11 Premier League games and could do without a long-term project to develop amongst their misery.

The man who they signed instead, Luis Sinisterra, already has three goals and one assist in his first ten games in English football.

They definitely made the smarter decision for their immediate future, as without his goals they would likely be even further adrift than they currently are.

Leeds certainly dodged a bullet when they didn’t sign De Ketelaere, although at the time it seemed like a devastating blow. He has stunk the San Siro out thus far.

Manchester United tracking Tyler Adams

Manchester United are keeping tabs on Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Adams at Leeds

Adams, a USA international, made the move to Leeds over the summer from RB Leipzig. The 23-year-old central midfielder has been a regular at Elland Road, missing just one Premier League game.

His displays in a struggling Leeds side appear to be catching the eye of Old Trafford officials, and it looks as if a future Old Trafford move could be on the cards.

The Latest: United keen

FI reporter Wayne Veysey shared a story on Wednesday evening regarding Adams and Manchester United.

He revealed that the Red Devils have a long-term interest in the midfielder and are keeping close tabs on his situation as they shortlist midfield targets.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-updates-9/” title=”Latest Man Utd updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: If Leeds are relegated?

Erik ten Hag bolstered his midfield ranks in the summer by bringing in Christian Eriksen and Casemiro, but it looks as if he wants further arrivals in 2023.

Adams is still fairly young at 23 and has impressed with his ‘energy and dynamism’, so if the midfielder suffers relegation with Leeds, you’d expect he may be open to the idea of remaining in the Premier League.

That may open the door for United to make their move, so his performances could be one to keep an eye on ahead of a potential transfer next year.

Wolves have ‘special concern’ over Jimenez

Wolves reportedly have a ‘special concern’ regarding striker Raul Jimenez’s current health and fitness, as he continues to recover from injury.

The Lowdown: Jimenez on the mend

The 31-year-old has suffered from various injury problems ever since receiving that life-threatening blow to the head against Arsenal back in November 2020, continually struggling to stay fit.

Jimenez is sidelined at the moment with a hip problem and hasn’t made an appearance for Wolves since the 0-0 draw away to Bournemouth at the end of August.

The hope is that he is fit for the upcoming World Cup but that appears to be no guarantee at the moment.

The Latest: Concerns still there

According to a fresh update from W Deportes [via Sport Witness], Wolves have a ‘special concern’ over Jimenez’s head issue, even though it happened a couple of years ago.

That is both in a physical and mental aspect and the club want him back in England to continue his rehabilitation.

[freshpress-quiz id=“398117″]

The Verdict: Handle him carefully

One thing Wanderers simply cannot afford to do is rush Jimenez back too soon, considering the severity of his injury in 2020 and also the complications that come with hip problems.

[freshpress-poll id=“399044″]

Sadly, the Mexican is unlikely to ever be the player he was before that incident – Nuno Espirito Santo once called him a ‘special’ striker – but he still has lots of quality and can continue to be an important squad member for Wolves.

For now, they may as well accept that he won’t be representing the club until after the World Cup, with anything different from that an added bonus.

Rangers played blinder with Kris Boyd

Glasgow Rangers have enjoyed their fair share of prolific goalscorers over the years as the number nine position has been filled by a host of talented strikers.

One man who looks set to add his name to that list is Croatian centre-forward Antonio Colak, who arrived at Ibrox from Greek side PAOK in the summer transfer window.

The 29-year-old has racked up 14 goals and two assists in 23 matches for Rangers, including 11 goals in 13 Premiership outings, as he has established himself as the first-choice option for Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Another player who has already written his name into Gers history as a phenomenal goalscorer is the man Colak has replaced up front – Alfredo Morelos. The Colombian hit the 100-club last season and is currently on 115 goals in 241 appearances in all competitions.

Morelos joined an illustrious list of strikers to have scored a century or more goals for the club and one of the other names on that list is current Sky Sports pundit Kris Boyd.

Former Gers manager Alex McLeish signed him from Kilmarnock in January of 2006 for a fee of roughly £500k, amid competition from English side Sheffield Wednesday.

He had scored 15 goals in 19 matches in the first half of the 2005/06 Premiership campaign, after plundering 32 goals in the previous two seasons combined, and that was enough to convince the Light Blues boss to snap him up.

They certainly hit the jackpot by signing him as the striker went on to become an icon for the Gers by regularly finding the back of the net over the course of a number of years.

In the second half of 2005/06, the 18-cap Scottish forward struck 17 times in 17 appearances in the top flight, finishing the season with 32 goals in 36 league outings for Kilmarnock and Rangers combined.

He went on to score 19, 14, 27, and 23 goals in the following four Premiership campaigns respectively, as he consistently found the net week-in-week-out in the division for the Light Blues.

Boyd eventually left to join Middlesbrough in England in the summer of 2010 and departed Rangers after scoring a whopping 109 goals in 168 matches in all competitions during a four-and-a-half-year stay in Glasgow.

This shows that McLeish played a blinder by signing him from Kilmarnock in 2006 as he became a lethal goalscorer for the club, something has deservedly seen him branded an “icon” by the Daily Record on multiple occasions.

The forward, who enjoyed a second spell at Ibrox in the 2014/15 campaign, may now be watching on as Colak fires in goals on a regular basis this season and wondering whether or not the Croatian is another who will be joining him in the 100-club in the coming years.

Liverpool must land the signing of Moukoko

Liverpool have had one of their worst starts to a Premier League season in years and there are many contributing factors to the issues Jurgen Klopp has been facing with his team’s inconsistent performances over the last few months.

Mounting injury problems to key players like Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Joel Matip alongside a lack of reinvestment in key areas of the pitch could be pinpointed to Liverpool’s downfall that has now left them eighth in the league table going into the World Cup break.

Indeed, Klopp will be slightly relieved to have a six-week pause in the Premier League season in order to get his squad back to their best and for players to return from injury ahead of their fixtures after Christmas, but there is no doubt that the January transfer window could be the real turning point for the Reds in the second half of the season.

One player who has been linked with a move to Merseyside in the new year is Borussia Dortmund wonderkid Youssoufa Moukoko, who has extraordinarily been called up to the World Cup squad for Germany.

According to SPORT BILD, Liverpool have joined the race to sign the talented striker who will be a free agent next summer but could be sold in January.

Over 13 Bundesliga appearances so far, Moukoko has scored six goals, delivered three assists and created two big chances, which is extremely impressive for a 17-year-old.

The £26m boyhood Borussia Dortmund prodigy has scored a whopping 153 goals and registered 35 assists whilst rising through the ranks of the elite German club, with a goal contribution every 51 minutes of his career so far.

Former Dortmund star Erling Haaland previously sang the praises of the talented teenager, putting across some fine but simple praise: “[He is] the biggest talent in the world right now.”

With that being said, the powers in Liverpool’s recruitment team simply cannot ignore the impressive output and tenacity the German offers and if they can secure his signature they could have their next Darwin Nunez in the team.

Like Moukoko, the Uruguayan is a fine young striker with a similarly instinctive nature inside the penalty area.

He didn’t quite burst onto the scene at such a young age, but that ruthless streak has always been there.

Indeed, speaking of the forward on talkSPORT, Adel Taarabt once said: “From the first training session, we understood that he’d be one of the best strikers in the world. How I’d compare him? He’s a mix of Edinson Cavani & Luis Suarez.”

Thus, both blessed with immense potential, it would be quite the strikeforce for Klopp moving forward.
