Crystal Palace emerge as shock contenders to sign £42m Real Madrid target

In a move that would ease any potential Marc Guehi blow this summer, Crystal Palace have now reportedly emerged as shock contenders to sign a young defender wanted by Real Madrid.

Crystal Palace transfer news

From languishing all too close to the relegation zone to fighting for a place in the top half and reaching the last eight of the FA Cup, Crystal Palace have enjoyed quite the turnaround this season. Following a shaky start to Oliver Glasner’s first full season in charge, in which they were still reeling from Michael Olise’s summer exit, the Eagles have rediscovered their best form under the Austrian.

That form has done them no favours when attempting to fend off any interest in Guehi, however. The England centre-back was the subject of interest from Newcastle United last summer, only for Palace to price the Magpies out of a move.

Now, almost a year on from those rumours, it’s the likes of Chelsea who are reportedly interested in securing Guehi’s signature and they, unlike Newcastle, will be difficult to price out of a summer deal.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehicelebrates after the match

It seems as though those in South London are already preparing for the worst by lining up a shock Maxence Lacroix repeat. According to Caught Offside, Crystal Palace have emerged as shock contenders to sign Konstantinos Koulierakis from Wolfsburg, who value their defender at as much as €50m (£42m) this summer.

The Eagles are far from alone in the race to secure his signature, however, with European giants Real Madrid standing alongside Liverpool in a mammoth battle in the coming months.

"Amazing" Koulierakis could replace Guehi

Whilst Wolfsburg would feel fairly hard done by if Crystal Palace signed Lacroix one summer and then his replacement one year later, that’s exactly what the Eagles should look to do. Having worked out last summer, returning to the Bundesliga could be the key to replacing Guehi should he swap Selhurst Park for a top six move when the transfer window swings open.

Performing to similar levels to Lacroix’s final Bundesliga season, particularly on the ball, Crystal Palace are certainly looking in the right direction for a potential new centre-back partnership. A move to the Premier League would be Koulierakis’ biggest yet and continue his rise from the central defender who football talent scout Jacek Kulig described as “amazing” at PAOK into one to watch in England’s top tier.

Whether Palace can cause a shock a beat the likes of Liverpool and Real Madrid to sign their second Wolfsburg defender in as many years remains to be seen. With or without Selhurst Park, however, Koulierakis looks destined for great things.

Real Madrid's Galacticos, Steven Gerrard's slip and the worst title collapses in modern football history after Ajax's epic Eredivisie choke

The Dutch giants blew a nine-point lead in the final five games of the campaign to become the latest side to throw away an almost-guaranteed trophy

No matter how far clear a team is at the top of the table heading into the final weeks of a season, football fans around the world know that a title isn't won until it's mathematically won. Never more does that hit home when a team collapses from a seemingly impossible position to hand their rivals the league trophy in the final stretch.

In 2024-25, it is Ajax who have suffered the ignominy of bottling what looked an almost-certain triumph just a few weeks ago. Francesco Farioli's side sat nine points clear of second-placed PSV with just five games of the Eredivisie season remaining, and the vast majority of supporters in the Netherlands already believed that Ajax's name was on the trophy.

However, a run of four games without a win, including heavy defeats to both Sparta Rotterdam and NEC Nijmegen, as well as a draw with 10-man Groningen during which the mid-table side scored a 99th-minute equaliser, suddenly left Ajax a point behind PSV going into the final day. And though Jordan Henderson and co. got back to winning ways against FC Twente, PSV got the victory they needed to secure a title that they had all-but given up on less than two months earlier.

Ajax's collapse, per , is the biggest by any team in European football history, so with that in mind, GOAL has ranked the worst collapses in recent history to have preceded the Dutch giants' remarkable late-season fall…

In March 1998, Manchester United enjoyed a 12-point lead over Arsenal. However, the Gunners finished the season in incredible fashion, winning 10 games in a row to overtake the Red Devils at the top of the table, despite some bookmakers actually paying out on a United title triumph.

The Gunners took advantage of their games in hand over United to pip them to glory, and sealed their victory with two games of the campaign remaining.

United would have had a 14-point lead if they had beaten Sheffield Wednesday in March and, having thumped the Owls 6-1 at home earlier in the season, the result did not look in question. Instead, they lost 2-0, before then drawing 1-1 with West Ham.

United were, though, still top going into their do-or-die clash with the Gunners at Old Trafford in May, but Marc Overmars scored a vital winner for the visitors, moving them six points behind their title rivals with three games in hand. And so by the time United kicked-off their final home game, Arsenal were already champions.

Arsene Wenger's side subsequently became only the third team to win the Premier League title after United and Blackburn Rovers, but Ferguson's men would recover to win the treble the following season.

Advertisement5Arsenal (2007-08)

Arsenal sold Thierry Henry in the summer before the 2007-08 season, but without him they developed into a force to be reckoned with, having acquired striker Eduardo to replace the Frenchman, while also placing their trust in Emmanuel Adebayor, who would go on to score 24 league goals over the course of the campaign.

With a new-look frontline, the Gunners opened up a five-point lead with 12 games of the season left having embarked on a run that saw them lose just once in the first half of the campaign. Then, they went to St Andrews to play Birmingham City. The game not only ended in a disappointing 2-2 draw, but Eduardo also sustained a horrific broken ankle while captain William Gallas had what can only be described as a meltdown on the pitch at full-time.

With their captain abdicating responsibility, Arsenal won just one of their next eight games, drawing with the likes of Wigan and Middlesbrough, and were beaten by eventual champions Manchester United.

Arsenal only lost three times in their 38 league games, but they eventually finished third, four points behind the Red Devils. Had Gallas simply kept it together, one has to wonder if the Gunners might have found a way to get over the line for the first time since 2004.

Getty Images Sport4Liverpool (2013-14)

'This does not f*cking slip now'. Steven Gerrard's famous last words proved all too prescient for Liverpool.

The Reds were five points clear after 35 games in 2014, and having beaten Manchester City 3-2 at Anfield, Gerrard gave the Reds a pep talk that was picked up by microphones, in which he maintained the players must keep their focus in the final weeks of the campaign as they needed just seven points from their final three games, against Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Newcastle, to win their first title in a generation.

Instead, Gerrard slipped against the Blues as the Reds lost 2-0 at home before – as the commentary famously said – Liverpool "caved in" at Selhurst Park, throwing away a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 with Palace.

Brendan Rodgers' side recovered to beat Newcastle on the final day, but it wasn't enough, and the title was on its way to Manchester City. It did, indeed, slip.

Newcastle's Premier League title collapse in 1996 is probably the most memorable in England's top-flight history. With manager Kevin Keegan at the helm, the Magpies' free-wheeling attacking football saw them dubbed the 'Great Entertainers', and they enjoyed a 12-point lead over Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United by mid-January.

The mind games, though, would begin thereafter, culminating in Keegan's infamous 'I will love it' rant.

Between February and April, Newcastle won just two of their eight games, in a run that included one of the greatest fixtures the league has ever seen; their 4-3 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield. Keegan was left slumped over the advertising hoardings as Stan Collymore scored the Reds' late winner, and United only lost one more game for the remainder of the season to overtake the Magpies.

Come the final day of the season, Ferguson's men were champions once more, four points ahead of Keegan's side. So close, yet so far.

Motie takes 13 to spin West Indies to 1-0 series win against Zimbabwe

Spinner takes six wickets to help West Indies inflict an innings defeat on Zimbabwe

Abhimanyu Bose14-Feb-2023Gudakesh Motie spun West Indies to a 1-0 series win as they wrapped up the second Test against Zimbabwe by an innings and four runs.Motie, playing his third Test, returned figures of 7 for 37 and 6 for 62 as West Indies won the match convincingly inside three days, despite rain wiping out large durations on the second and third days. His figures of 13 for 99 are also the best in a Test match by a West Indies spinner, as he went past Sonny Ramadhin’s 11 for 152 against England in 1950.Despite good performances by Victor Nyauchi, Innocent Kaia and captain Craig Ervine, Zimbabwe succumbed to a big defeat, with their batting line-up faltering in the absence of Gary Ballance, who missed the game due to a migraine headache.Related

It was Nyauchi’s first five-wicket haul in Tests. For the second time in the match, Kaia was off the blocks quickly, hitting three fine strokes for boundaries in the first two overs. But Alzarri Joseph gave West Indies the first breakthrough in the third over as Tanunurwa Makoni edged behind, looking to play an expansive drive. Then, the first bowling change brought a wicket, with Chamu Chibhabha chopping on off Holder’s bowling in the seventh over.Kaia, Zimbabwe’s best batter in the first innings, continued to chip away at West Indies’ lead, even hitting Holder for three consecutive boundaries.Ervine held down one end as Kaia scored 30 of the 41 runs that they made for the third wicket. When Motie came out to bowl, Kaia immediately started attacking him with the sweep, but looked less in control than he was against the pacers. But Chase had Mavuta caught at forward short leg with the first ball of the next over to give West Indies another opening.Motie came back into the attack immediately and was quick to wrap the game up.He trapped Ervine lbw for 72 – Zimbabwe’s highest score in the match – as he played back to a length ball that spun in and stayed low before getting the ball to spin past an advancing Nyauchi for Da Silva to complete a simple stumping.

Australia's Kuhnemann signs county deal with Durham

Slow left-armer recruited as replacement for compatriot Todd Murphy

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Mar-2023Durham have signed Matthew Kuhnemann, the Australia slow left-arm spinner, for their LV= Insurance County Championship campaign, after a planned deal for Kuhnemann’s Test team-mate Todd Murphy fell through.Durham had hoped to bring in Murphy for the first part of the summer but the offspinner’s availability was blocked by Cricket Australia, with the expectation that he will be part of their Ashes squad. Durham’s director of cricket, the former Australia international Marcus North, said the club still intended to call on Murphy for the latter part of the season.Kuhnemann, 26, made his Test debut alongside Murphy and Nathan Lyon in India last month, going on to claim nine wickets in three appearances, including a maiden five-for in Australia’s victory in Indore.”We are very excited to have secured another exciting young spin talent in Matthew Kuhnemann,” North said. “Matt impressed in India for Australia and is in a great place with his game, we are really looking forward to him joining us next week and seeing him perform in the County Championship.”We were keen to bring in a spinner that will enable us to further strengthen and balance our Championship side and with the signing of Matt, that now helps us to be effective in all conditions.”We are obviously disappointed that Todd Murphy will not be joining as in the early part of the season as planned, but we look forward to welcoming him to the club later in the summer.”Kuhnemann, who was already due to play club cricket in the UK, only made his first-class debut for Queensland in 2021 but has had plenty of Big Bash experience with Brisbane Heat as well as being capped four times in ODIs.”I’m really excited to be joining Durham for the upcoming county season,” Kuhnemann said. “I look forward to playing with some world class players and contributing to some wins for the club throughout the summer. I can’t wait to get over there and meet everyone.”

Howe must cash in on £60k-per-week Newcastle star who "looks petrified"

Newcastle United are just over a week away from the Carabao Cup final at Wembley. Liverpool await.

What should be a joyous occasion has been tainted by a slew of setbacks, casting Eddie Howe’s squad back into a depleted state that makes life difficult indeed given the calibre of opposition.

Still, the sixth-place Magpies are one of the most dangerous teams in Europe on their day. If Newcastle can make it a successful finish to the campaign, it would help immensely going into the 2025/26 campaign.

Newcastle are reportedly ‘excited’ by the upcoming transfer window after battling through PSR concerns, with Howe looking to be backed as he pushes for a return to the Champions League.

Newcastle's transfer plans this summer

Now that Miguel Almiron’s re-signed for Atlanta United in an £8m deal, Newcastle are short on options at right wing.

Jacob Murphy’s form has mitigated the urgency, but Premier League stars such as Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo and Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford are allegedly on the shortlist and could be targetted this summer.

With Sven Botman struggling for fitness and Lloyd Kelly leaving on loan in January, a centre-back would also go down a treat, but Newcastle are also eyeing a deal further back.

James Trafford, 22, has been incredible between the sticks for Burnley this season, keeping 24 clean sheets from 34 Championship matches and saving 87% of his shots faced, as per Sofascore.

Is it any wonder the Toon are keen on a deal? TalkSPORT suggest Burnley will want £30m for their goalkeeper, but this would surely be worthwhile as Howe looks to engineer the next phase in Newcastle’s development.

If he’s welcomed, though, someone will need to go…

Howe must cash in on £60k-per-week star

Newcastle might be compliant with PSR-related concerns, but if they wish to invest, sales will be necessary.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe reacts

If Newcastle strike gold and bring Trafford to St. James’ Park, it makes little sense to keep Nick Pope on the books, an idea Howe subscribes to given United are already stirring up plans for his sale this summer.

As per Football Insider, Newcastle would be willing to let Pope exit for around £15m in the next window, which would be an absolute triumph given he was purchased from Burnley for just £10m.

Nick Pope

Pope has been a stalwart shot-stopper during his time at Newcastle, but having been dealt a string of injury blows this season, PIF chiefs are warming to the idea of his sale since he is losing his way between the sticks.

With unavailability and a declining sense of security in shot saving, bagging a rising star of Trafford’s ability makes a lot of sense.

Moreover, the 32-year-old (who turns 33 next month) is in the penultimate year of his £60k-per-week contract. With Trafford at the top of the Toon’s wish list, it feels right that he should move on this summer, no longer boasting his one-time unflappability and indeed feeling the effects of Father Time.

There have been several indicators of regression. Recently, loose passing and a lack of authority nearly cost Newcastle in a 4-3 win over Nottingham Forest, while his shot-stopping security has also raised questions – see below against Tottenham Hotspur.

Reporter Adam Clery even suggested several weeks ago the England international “looks absolutely petrified” when diving – a by-product of his injury issues – and that this is “fatal” for a goalkeeper.

Trafford would be the perfect fit to jockey with Martin Dubravka for the top spot, having been hailed for his “sensational” exploits this season by Burnley podcaster Natalie Bromley.

Bringing Trafford in would create a neat kind of continuity, for Pope too came from Turf Moor. His ship has run its course, and Howe will want to make the requisite transfer adjustments this summer to take his Tyneside crew to the next level.

Naomi Girma, fresh off helping Chelsea win the FA Cup Final and clinch the treble, is rejoining the the U.S. women's national team for the first time in 2025, headlining coach Emma Hayes' squad for upcoming friendlies against China and Jamaica.

Girma's absence has been noticed in defense, and the USWNT can now count on one of the best in the world for these matches. Chelsea – featuring both Girma and Catarina Macario – won the FA Cup on Sunday, adding another trophy alongside the WSL and Women's League Cup.

Lynn Biyendolo also returns to the USWNT squad after missing out on the April matches, while Portland Thorns starlet Olivia Moultrie is in the team for the first time in a year.

Among the newcomers are Orlando Pride defender Kerry Abello and KC Current veteran Lo'eau LaBonta, the latter of whom could become the oldest USWNT debutant at 32.

The squad continues Hayes' recent trend of empowering young players, particularly in the attack. Without any members of Triple Espresso in the team – both Sophia Wilson and Mallory Swanson are pregnant, and Trinity Rodman is continuing to deal with a back injury – four of the seven forwards are under the age of 22. Ally Sentnor, Michelle Cooper, Alyssa Thompson and Emma Sears have seized chances, as has Alyssa's younger sister, Gisele, who is listed among the forwards.

Joining them are Biyendolo and Catarina Macario. The midfield, meanwhile, has veterans Sam Coffey and Lindsey Heaps to go with more inexperienced players such as Moultrie, Lily Yohannes and Claire Hutton, as well as newcomer LaBonta, who has years of NWSL experience.

The goalkeeper spot, in particular, will be an interesting watch as the three shot-stoppers in the squad – Claudia Dickey, Mandy McGlynn and Phallon Tullis-Joyce – have a combined four caps between them.

“Everyone always earns their call-ups but there are some much-deserved call-ups in this camp for players who have shown consistency in league play,” Hayes said. “We have two different types of opponents ahead of us, so we’ll have to be creative in breaking down those teams in different ways.

"Now that everyone has settled into a rhythm with their clubs, or is coming right off their European seasons, our players are at a good level. As has been one of our focuses this year, this camp and the following camp are going to be two amazing opportunities to develop squad depth.”

Varun's end-overs mastery seals improbable KKR win

Markram and Klaasen had put Sunrisers in control of their chase before the mystery spinner’s choke

Dasgupta: Varun is the leader of KKR’s pack right now

Varun Chakravarthy bowled overs 16, 18 and 20 for 12 runs – four of them off byes and leg byes – and one wicket as Kolkata Knight Riders pulled off an improbable win over Sunrisers Hyderabad, only their fourth in 10 matches this season. The defeat left SRH in an identical situation to KKR’s before the match: three wins in six matches. Both sides remained in must-win territory. When Heinrich Klaasen was dominating at the start of the second half of the chase, it seemed like a cruise for SRH in their pursuit of 172. When they needed 48 off the last six overs, Klaasen fell to Shardul Thakur’s golden arm, and then Varun choked SRH with help from Vaibhav Arora, who got the wicket of Aiden Markram in the 17th over.Varun Chakravarthy was KKR’s hero in the closing stages•Associated PressJansen’s bounce
KKR’s seventh opening combination of this IPL was the most anticipated: Jason Roy and Rahmanullah Gurbaz, both of whom have batted breathtakingly in different matches. The promise didn’t materialise as Gurbaz walked at Marco Jansen the first ball he faced, and ended up top-edging to mid-on. Later in the over, Venkatesh Iyer got a snorter: extra bounce from just short of a length, and straight at his face. Off the glove to the keeper.Bhuvneshwar Kumar frustrated Roy with his movement, and Kartik Tyagi, playing his first match this year, benefited as Roy went to manufacture a pull from well outside off and toe-ended it to short third: 35 for 3 in the fifth over. The recovery
Helped by some waywardness from Jansen in his third over, Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh set about rebuilding the innings at a fair clip. Aiden Markram saw the opportunity to slip in a couple of overs to two left-hand batters, and found some grip. It was when Tyagi tried to bounce Rana that KKR finally found proper momentum with two sixes and a four in the 10th over to move to 90 for 3.ESPNcricinfo LtdSpinners shackle KKR
With KKR looking to dominate, Markram went to his No. 1 spinner Mayank Markande, who immediately applied the brakes. Markram himself got a change of ends, and Rana took a risk only to top-edge a slog-sweep.With Sunil Narine not in batting form, KKR didn’t have an option but to send Andre Russell out to face wristspin. He managed to hit two sixes off overpitched balls, but Markande still overpitched, only wide of his reach, and had him caught at short third.Wickets then kept falling. KKR sacrificed Suyash Sharma by substituting in Anukul Roy with 15 balls to spare, but they never found the big overs at the death.Harshit gives KKR new-ball bonus
KKR have mainly relied on their spinners to win them matches but they received a bonus through the impressive burly fast bowler Harshit Rana. He bowled with some heat, and had Mayank Agarwal gloving a bouncer. Shardul Thakur’s golden touch continued with Abhishek Sharma nonchalantly skying one up. Rahul Tripathi took Russell on with four, six and four in the sixth over, but fell to a ramp off a slower ball against the same bowler.Having taken three early wickets through the quicks, KKR fancied their chances, especially with Anukul getting harry Brook for a duck on the paddle sweep in the seventh over. At 54 for 4, with their two main spinners in the pocket, KKR proceeded to tighten the screws.Heinrich Klaasen took on the spinners to put SRH in control of their chase•BCCIKlaasen shifts the momentum
Klaasen and Markram, SRH’s two best batters, went 19 straight balls without even attempting a boundary let alone hit one. They knew there wasn’t much behind them so they were contend to rebuild. KKR were holding back their main spinners, telling them the batters would have to take big risks on a slow low pitch to get the 97 they needed in the last 10 overs.Klaasen chose Anukul’s third over as the moment to start the pushback. He charged the first ball of the 11th over, and went over long-off for a six. Then he slogged a 101m hit over midwicket. It rubbed on to Markram – he was on 11 off 21 then – who welcomed Varun with two square-cut fours. It was as though the floodgates had opened with 49 coming off four overs, leaving Sunrisers just 48 to get off six overs.Thakur inspires, Varun executes
Brought back, Thakur again imparted the golden touch. This length ball, to start the 15th over, looked on-pace and in the slot, but it was a fast cutter, and Klaasen toe-ended it to long-on. SRH still had Markram in charge, and he had now moved up to a run a ball after his slow start. Two boundaries in that Thakur over calmed SRH’s nerves. However, Varun sucked the life out of their innings. Bowling around the wicket, he denied them any hits down the ground by bowling into the pitch. Nor did he give them any pace to work with.Markram felt obliged to take on Vaibhav, but chose a bouncer too high to go after. He ended up holing out to long-off for 41 off 40. Varun kept tightening the noose. No boundary came off the 18th over. With 21 required off two overs, Gurbaz took a stunning left-handed catch off Jansen’s inside edge. Arora then overcame a no-ball, which Abdul Samad sliced for four, to leave Varun eight to defend in the last over.Samad, 20 off 16 at the start of the over, ended up hitting a slow short ball straight to deep midwicket. Bhuvneshwar Kumar had never ended up on the winning side on the 33 previous occasions when he had batted in a chase in the IPL; left with too much to do now, he finished on the losing side once again.

Sky Sports: Man Utd now plotting move to sign £67m star alongside striker

Manchester United and INEOS are now plotting a move to sign a “versatile” £67 million star alongside a new striker, according to Sky Sports.

Man Utd add new striker to transfer radar

It has become quite clear to Ruben Amorim that signing a new striker during the summer transfer window should be a top priority given the lack of goals in the team throughout this campaign.

Man Utd eye Isak-like forward who's outscored Hojlund and Zirkzee in 24/25

Man United have set their sights on signing a new striker this summer and a fresh name is on their radar.

1 ByBrett Worthington Mar 20, 2025

Strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have been tasked with leading the United line this season, but the pair have struggled to make a regular impact in terms of goals on a consistent basis. In fact, Hojlund’s struggles have meant he is now being linked with a move to Napoli.

The Italian side are said to be keen on landing the Denmark international, as Antonio Conte sees him as someone who can compete alongside current striker Romelu Lukaku.

So as Hojlund is linked with a move away from Old Trafford, United have now added Mainz striker Jonathan Burkardt to their transfer wishlist.

Burkardt is the latest striker to be added to their list after impressing club scouts in the 3-4-3 system that the German side like to play, which is identical to how Amorim sets up his United team.

Man Utd plotting move to sign £67m Bundesliga star

While the Red Devils continue their search for a new number nine, according to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Man United are also weighing up a move to sign Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig alongside a striker.

Plettenberg states that United have now moved away from holding an interest in signing Simons, as they are looking to sign a “versatile” attacking midfielder as well as a new striker. However, he states the issue for the Red Devils could be the cost, as Simons is considered very expensive.

The German side are looking to get around €80 million for the Netherlands international, which is roughly £67 million. Despite the hefty price tag, it is possible that Simons will leave Leipzig in the summer.

Despite Leipzig’s struggles in the Bundesliga and the Champions League, it has been another impressive campaign on a personal level for Simons. The midfielder has netted seven goals in 18 league games, as well as grabbing four assists along the way.

The Dutchman, who has 24 caps to his name, is under contract until June 2027, so Leipzig still have time left to decide on his future, but given the team’s struggles this campaign, Simons may be looking for a new challenge in the summer.
