Rahul Chahar to CSK's Deepak: 'Stay strong, brother, get well soon'

It’s not known what Deepak is suffering from, but he’s part of the CSK camp, where more than 10 members have tested positive

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Aug-2020In a curiously worded Twitter message, Mumbai Indians legspinner Rahul Chahar has wished his cousin Deepak Chahar, of Chennai Super Kings, a “speedy recovery” and said he hoped he would “get well soon”. There has been no official confirmation about what Deepak is suffering from but he is part of the Super Kings camp in Dubai, where more than ten people have tested positive for Covid-19.Rahul Chahar, who is now in Abu Dhabi with his team, said in his Twitter message: “Stay strong brother…all my prayers for you”. The tweet, posted at 8:36 pm local time (10:06 pm in India), came on a day when the Chennai camp had already been dealt a blow with the exit of senior player Suresh Raina for the duration of the tournament.ALSO READ: Raina to miss entire IPL due to personal reasons

Deepak has been central to Super Kings’ attack in the past couple of seasons, often bowling in the powerplay and in the slog overs. Coming off an injury – he last played competitive cricket in December 2019 – Deepak was part of Super Kings’camp in Chennai, along with captain MS Dhoni, Raina, M Vijay, Ambati Rayudu, Piyush Chawla and L Balaji, the bowling coach, before flying out to the UAE.That camp has also come in sharp focus now because it was held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, and its neighbourhood, especially Triplicane, has become a Covid-19 hotspot. There has been no direct correlation established between the camp and the positive tests, though. The IPL is due to start on September 19, but the schedule is yet to be finalised. The setbacks in Super Kings’ camp is likely to put the IPL on alert as they are expected to play defending champions Mumbai Indians in the opener.

Leeds eyeing "fantastic" transfer that can help them forget Bamford

Leeds United went into the Championship play-off final having to start a goal-shy Joel Piroe up top, with Patrick Bamford sidelined through yet another injury.

Piroe barely left a lasting impression on the Leeds masses nervously watching on at Wembley, failing to have a single shot on Alex McCarthy's net as the Southampton defenders contained the Dutchman with ease all afternoon.

It's not as if Bamford would have done any better when you look at the barren sequence of games he had endured before injury troubles got the better of him again, only managing to ripple an opponent's goal with one strike in his last seven clashes before the treatment room inevitably beckoned.

The focus, therefore, could be on getting a new lethal striker in through the door in West Yorkshire this summer, as Leeds eye up a promising attacker who has had difficulties in the treatment room himself as of late.

Leeds looking at in-demand youngster

Still only 20 years of age, it does, however, feel like a lifetime ago since Daniel Jebbison was first making waves at Sheffield United across in neighbouring South Yorkshire.

Bumped up to the senior mix after six goals from six in the U18 ranks, Jebbison has had his struggles since with the entirety of this season – minus the final game – curtailed owing to a serious blood clot.

Yet, that hasn't stopped a number of suitors from beginning to sniff around for the unlucky young striker this summer, with Leeds notably interested according to journalist Graeme Bailey.

The likes of Everton, Brighton and Hove Albion and Leicester City are all further credited with being keen on the attacker, who could leave the Blades on a free in the off-season, as his contract begins to run out at Bramall Lane even after such a promising start to his career at the club.

Third in the esteemed list above, after instinctively scoring for United away at Goodison Park, Leeds will hope they can turn back the clock and get this Jebbison back if he signs, finally ditching Bamford in the process.

What this move could mean for Bamford

Although Bamford did have moments of magic last campaign for the Whites, with that first-time screamer against Peterborough United in the FA Cup etched into every Leeds' fans brain, he also very visibly struggled to keep up with the pace at points.

His final full outing at Elland Road before a knee injury struck saw Leeds frustratingly draw 0-0 with Sunderland, with Bamford only managing a meagre 31 touches and one off-target effort to try and win his lacklustre team all three points.

In the grand scheme of things, results like that one at home and a further 1-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers after this killed Daniel Farke's men and their hopes of gatecrashing the top two in the division.

Patrick Bamford

Therefore, injecting the squad with a fresher option in Jebbison wouldn't be the most out-there shout, considering the former teenage starlet for the Blades only needed two men's appearances before bagging away in Merseyside.

Described as being "fantastic" when it came to his physical strength by then Sheffield United coach Jack Lester, even when United had dropped down a division and he struggled for fitness once more, Jebbison would be able to give the likes of Mateo Joseph and Joe Gelhardt a run for their money to add spice to the competition for places up top.

daniel-jebbison-everton-transfer-news-opinion-premier-league

It would, no doubt, be risky swapping out the injury-prone Bamford for a man who missed nearly all of last season, but a risk worth taking if Leeds can get the former England U20 international back up to speed quickly and firing on all cylinders again.

ÂŁ50 million Chelsea ace now eyeing Saudi move amid Enzo Maresca’s arrival

A £50 million Chelsea player is said to be eyeing a move to Saudi Arabia amid Enzo Maresca's arrival at the club, with the Italian's appointment confirmed on Monday.

Maresca announced as new Chelsea head coach this week

A new era at Stamford Bridge has officially begun, as Maresca puts pen to paper on a five-year deal with the option of a further 12 months.

Enzo Maresca excited to work with ÂŁ60,000-per-week Chelsea ace, really rates him

The Blues officially announced Maresca’s arrival on Monday.

ByEmilio Galantini Jun 4, 2024

Pretty much immediately after securing Premier League promotion with Leicester City, and winning the Championship title last season, Maresca has made the switch to west London as he makes plans behind the scenes.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Maresca cannot wait to work with Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez as one squad member he really rates. There have been other reports that Maresca plans to make Cole Palmer the focal point of his Chelsea side as well, and the ex-Parma boss is also very much looking forward to working with Chelsea's younger crop of players.

“Maresca believes in the Chelsea project around young players with a big future, he thinks it is a really exciting project," said reliable journalist Romano to CaughtOffside on why Maresca joined Chelsea.

"Meanwhile, Chelsea are convinced he’s a super talented coach and that’s why he’s a name appreciated by both directors and owners, all convinced he can be the man for present and future. Maresca’s obsession with ball possession, quality football, dominating the game, his knowledge of elite football despite being a young manager – all of this made the difference for Chelsea to pick him.”

While certain squad members are set to hugely benefit after Maresca's switch to Stamford Bridge, the same cannot be said for some players. Chelsea are set to try and sell Romelu Lukaku for around £38 million, while Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth writes that Borussia Dortmund are in talks to sign Ian Maatsen on a permanent deal.

Another player who could be sold under Maresca is striker Armando Broja, who was valued at around £50 million earlier this year.

After a poor loan spell at Fulham, clubs could be unlikely to pay a figure close to that amount, with journalist Ben Jacobs sharing an update on his future for GiveMeSport.

Broja open to leaving Chelsea for Saudi side

He writes that Broja is open to leaving Chelsea for Saudi Arabia this summer, but clubs in the Middle East are only likely to pay up to £20 million for him – under half of what Chelsea valued him a few months ago.

The Albania international's sale would count as pure profit in the eyes of PSR, considering he came through the Cobham academy, and it's perhaps more important to just get him off the books to raise funds.

Broja did enjoy a fantastic loan spell at Southampton a couple of seasons ago, with Saints legend Francis Benali calling him a "sensational" player.

Australia aim to protect 20-year dominance with a chance of world record

New Zealand were given a confidence boost by victory in the last T20I but still look short of spin resources for the conditions

Andrew McGlashan02-Oct-2020Australia will reacquaint themselves with ODI cricket on Saturday after a gap of 12 months with a 20-year record of dominance over New Zealand to protect and the chance to equal a world record if they are able to win the Rose Bowl 3-0.Meg Lanning’s team currently sit on 18 consecutive ODI wins having most recently played the format last October against Sri Lanka. Three victories over the next few days would take them level with the 21 consecutive wins put together by Ricky Ponting’s side in 2003.Defeat in the final T20I was a reminder that they may not have it all their own way, but New Zealand have not held the Rose Bowl one-day trophy since 1999 and were beaten 3-0 in the previous series, which was held in Australia in early 2019 although they should have won the opening match in Perth.”We’re definitely aware of it, not necessarily within what we are talking about but you see it in the media,” allrounder Jess Jonassen said. “It’s been an incredible achievement so far to have won so many on the trot.”It’s not a record we are necessarily setting out to try and break because we know of the calibre of players in this New Zealand set-up. They have any number of people who can take any game away from you. We don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves. If we do get to that position, hopefully we can go for a clean sweep. The noise and the chat around that world record would be pretty much at the forefront by then.”For New Zealand, having ended a 13-match losing streak across formats against Australia by winning the final T20I, they are able to head into the series with a lift to their confidence.”The great thing is we are now able to play three [ODI] games in six days, like everyone else we haven’t had much opportunity to do that,” head coach Bob Carter told ESPNcricinfo. “It’ll be really good to get a gauge and really test ourselves with that batting order, how we respond to playing a 50-over game, developing those skills you need through different phases.”They are hampered on this trip by the absence of offspinners Leigh Kasperek and Anna Peterson, especially as the Allan Border Field pitches are being used multiple times and offering considerable help to spin, leaving a lot on the shoulders of Amelia Kerr, but Carter is keen to look at the bigger picture.ESPNcricinfo Ltd”The thing to understand is as a team, we need to build our depth,” he said. “Can we build it to the level of England or Australia? Maybe not, but then again you can say that sometimes reflects in the men’s game, but we know how wonderfully well the Blackcaps do in all the major competitions. For me that’s what I’m trying to transfer from my high performance role to the White Ferns, try and express to the girls that we are able to produce significant performances.”Not having the two offspinners, who are very fine bowlers, was something that we had to look at. And again, this about us trying to create some depth. The bonus for us that Maddy Green, who would be considered as a developing offspinner, has now shown herself that she can bowl two overs for six [in the last T20I] and pick up a valuable wicket. Sometimes you’ve got to adapt because you’ve got what you’ve got. Amelia has now started to really find her rhythm after not bowling for some time. And the seamers, it’s great to see Lea Tahuhu, running in how she is, and Rosemary Mair.”There has also been the positive return to international cricket for Amy Satterthwaite who looked in excellent form during the last two T20Is. “She’s been working two or three times a week since early June and also been doing all her strength work,” Carter said. “It was a case of her proving it to herself. I personally wasn’t surprised how well she played; think she might have surprised herself.”The challenge for them against Australia, even with the hosts missing Ellyse Perry, is significant – there have not been too many close matches in the run of 18 wins; the five-run win against New Zealand last year and a two-wicket margin against England among a lot of one-sided outings. They are a team that does not want to stand still.”We just want to live our team values and one of those is being fearless,” Jonassen said. “Over the last few years, we’ve really grabbed the concept of fearless rather than reckless and think that has allowed us to push to envelope in 50-over cricket as well.”I was only talking to someone the other day that when I came in playing National League, 180 was seen as a good score and 200 was almost the mental barrier over the opposition, whereas now it’s 250-260 and sometimes that’s not enough. The more that we are playing fearless cricket from a batting perspective that will always push the game forward.”New Zealand captain Sophie Devine has said that the last 12 months has been about building self-belief in her team. This series will be another test of how deep that runs.

Man Utd could land Rice clone in swoop for ÂŁ42m Mainoo partner

It’s fair to say that among the disappointments of the 2023/24 campaign, there were a handful of shining lights that pointed towards a positive future at Manchester United.

One of those was most definitely Kobbie Mainoo, who excelled at the heart of the midfield under Erik ten Hag from the very second he stepped foot on the field against Everton in November.

Kobbie Mainoo

At just 19 years of age, he has the maturity and quality to perform at the highest level against the very best, as shown by his FA Cup-winning goal against Manchester City.

With the brilliant Mainoo in mind, let’s take a look at a Red Devils target who could prove to be United’s very own Declan Rice.

Man Utd’s recent transfer activity

Jarrad Branthwaite has been the most heavily linked player to Old Trafford so far this summer, but his move could prove difficult given Everton’s extreme demands.

At the other end of the field, Joshua Zirkzee is a name that’s been mentioned in reports, as United could look to activate his £33.7m release clause.

Manchester United transfer target Joshua Zirkzee in action in Serie A.

However, it’s in the middle of the park where United are looking to reinforce, with Edson Alvarez and now Conor Gallagher listed as targets.

According to reports from Spain, Man United have entered the race to sign the Chelsea midfielder this summer alongside Arsenal and Atletico Madrid.

It’s said that the Blues would be willing to sell the England international for £42m, as they look to raise funds for the player viewed as replaceable.

Gallagher could be Man Utd’s own Rice

Under the influence of Mauricio Pochettino, Gallagher became such a vital cog in the Chelsea system, regardless of what position he was deployed in.

Just like all the best leaders in the Premier League, the academy graduate led by example in every single match, displaying determination and the desperation to succeed.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher

Throughout the campaign, the versatile midfielder started 37 Premier League games, which would have been 38 had he not received a red card against Brighton & Hove Albion.

The former Crystal Palace loanee also proved that he can become a match-winner, becoming influential in the final third with five goals and seven assists.

It’s fair to say that Gallagher has absolutely everything you’d look for in a modern-day midfielder, and the same can be said for Rice.

As you can see from the table, it’s no surprise that Rice and Gallagher have been classified as ‘similar players’ by FBref.

England midfielder Declan Rice

Firstly, the duo are both technically gifted and have the ability to work in tight spaces, control a game, and help the side during the build-up phase, as shown by their touches, passes completed, and progressive passes.

This would make Gallagher an ideal partner for Mainoo, as between them, they’d be able to dictate the tempo of the game as well as adopt the playing out from the back approach.

On the other hand, Gallagher is known for being an absolute “machine” when it comes to off-the-ball actions and intensity, as dubbed by teammate Moises Caicedo.

Just like Rice, the 24-year-old is full of energy, and he can cover ground with ease due to his athleticism, which would be a welcomed addition from Mainoo’s perspective, especially as he was partnered by Casemiro last season, who “cannot run,” as per football creator Liam Canning.

Together, Mainoo and Gallagher would be an absolute nightmare to play against due to the intensity, technical quality, and defensive security they’d bring to the team, which United simply didn’t have enough of last season.

Overall, signing Gallagher could prove to be a masterclass by Man United, especially given that he’s a Rice clone and he’d thrive next to Mainoo, which is why ten Hag must swoop for him before the window slams shut in August.

Leah Williamson just got schooled by Mayra Ramirez! Winners & losers as Chelsea forward proves she's a WSL megastar to leave Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall on the brink

The Gunners showed fight in the second half but it wasn't enough as their manager suffered another damaging defeat, with Ramirez the primary tormentor

Was that Jonas Eidevall's final game in charge of Arsenal? The Gunners suffered a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday which leaves them with just five points from their first four Women's Super League fixtures. It's a division which has only twice been won by teams that have dropped more than 10 points across an entire campaign. After draws with Manchester City and Everton, and now this loss, the Gunners' total already sits at seven. Their title hopes have already taken an almighty hit.

It was an even more damaging result because of the 5-2 thrashing Arsenal suffered at the hands of Bayern Munich on Wednesday night. There are still five Champions League group-stage games remaining for Eidevall's side to sort things out in Europe and progress to the last 16, but the defending was truly atrocious and only continued into the weekend. There were just four minutes on the clock on Saturday when Arsenal conceded from yet another set piece, while the lack of communication, organisation and marking for Chelsea's second further highlighted the problems at the back.

However, though at 2-0 it felt like the Gunners were on their way to another thrashing and Eidevall's future would be seriously in doubt come full-time, the response from the players was positive. Caitlin Foord's goal just before half-time was important and the valiant second-half display saw the hosts show real fight, only denied a point by the crossbar in the end. That spirited fight back may not have earned them a result, but it may have bought Eidevall some time.

In the opposing dugout, Sonia Bompastor won't have been happy with the game management from her players. There will have surely been a feeling of relief when the full-time whistle went, as Chelsea were really on the ropes in those latter stages. But a win is a win – and that is all Bompastor has known since she joined the club, replacing iconic coach Emma Hayes in the summer. Five games into her time with the Blues, she has five victories to show for it, with this the biggest one yet as the WSL champions pursue a sixth successive league title.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from the Emirates Stadium…

Getty Images SportLOSER: Jonas Eidevall

Arsenal haven't won the league for five years and after this start to the new season, it seems likely that the wait to be crowned champions of England again will only continue. The question is, will the club opt to make a change in the dugout in their bid to return to the very top of the domestic game?

Eidevall joined the Gunners in 2021 and things started well, with a strong title challenge. However, the past two seasons have seen Arsenal fall away before the race at the top has really heated up, only able to finish third on both occasions. The pressure has been somewhat eased by two League Cup triumphs, though added to by elimination in Champions League qualifying last year.

All associated with Arsenal want to win the league, something Eidevall himself said was the aim before the season began. But the same issues are costing them from achieving as much. So, has the valiant fightback on Saturday earned him more time to fix these problems? Or will this result be the straw that breaks the camel's back? We'll soon find out.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWINNER: Kadeisha Buchanan

When Kadeisha Buchanan arrived at Chelsea, she did so as one of the best defenders in the world. Her performances at Lyon helped her rack up five Champions League titles, while her form on the international stage was crucial as Canada won Olympic gold in 2021.

She's not really hit those heights in her two years in England so far, something Hayes said last season that Buchanan herself was aware of. So far this season, though, we are seeing her top level again.

The centre-back was great in the 1-0 win over Aston Villa on the opening day – and outstanding at the Emirates. She was like a magnet for the ball, always in the right place to make a crucial block, tackle or clearance. If she can continue in this manner, Buchanan could be a huge player for Chelsea this year.

Getty Images SportLOSER: Leah Williamson

It's not been an easy start to the season for Leah Williamson, who has only recently come back from a concussion. Perhaps that absence contributed to an uncharacteristically bad display on Saturday. The Lionesses captain was up against a dominant Mayra Ramirez and the sheer quality of the Chelsea striker certainly played a part, as she can make even the very best defenders look poor. However, Williamson looked totally out of sorts in a myriad of ways in a calamity of a defensive display from the Gunners in the first half.

There was a moment in that opening 45 minutes when Williamson was chasing Ramirez down the right wing and she appealed that the ball had gone out of play for an Arsenal throw. It looked clearly in to everyone else – including the officials – but the defender slowed her chase of her opponent to question that decision. It was a surprising sight to see such a top defender ignoring the number one rule for any footballer, to play to the whistle, but a moment that also showed how out of character this performance was from Williamson.

For Arsenal to improve on defending that has been awful lately, they need her on top form. In that sense, they'll hope this was a one-off.

Getty Images SportWINNER: Mayra Ramirez

Is there a more complete centre forward in the women's game than Ramirez? She's strong, able to bounce off defenders with ease, just as she did with Fox before scoring Chelsea's opener. She's deceptively quick, able to power away from opponents in a flash to either get in behind or get her team on the attack. She's incredibly skillful, as the improvised nature of her goal showed. She's also very intelligent in her movement off the ball, which allowed her to have so many good moments on Saturday.

Ramirez has real competition for her place in this Chelsea team. Aggie Beever-Jones has been in fantastic form and is earning opportunities as a result, while Sam Kerr and Mia Fishel will be back in the New Year. But if the Colombian continues to perform like this, Bompastor would struggle to bench her.

Approach imminent: Everton want to sign "special" ÂŁ20k-a-week winger

Everton are believed to be readying an approach for a "special" player in the summer transfer window, according to a fresh update.

Everton transfer news

The Blues continue to be linked with new signings ahead of next season, with Newcastle United youngster Yankuba Minteh a player who was being looked at, though he now seems set to join Lyon.

Iliman Ndiaye is a target who has been lined up as a replacement for the possible loss of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with the Marseille ace described as a "ridiculously talented" footballer who could add quality and unpredictability in the final third.

Iliman Ndiaye for Marseille.

Meanwhile, Wilfred Ndidi stood out as one of the leading midfielders in the Championship last season, playing an important role in Leicester City returning to the Premier League, and he is being looked at as an upgrade on the ageing Idrissa Gueye in the middle of the park at Goodison Park.

Midfield additions could also be important for Everton before the 2024/25 campaign gets underway, and Roma midfielder Edoardo Bove is also reportedly wanted by the Blues, being seen as a player who could link effectively with Jack Harrison.

Everton want "special" Championship winger

According to Football Insider, Everton are "readying an approach" for Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto this summer, with the Blues "turning their attention to a new move" for the Italian.

The Merseysiders came close to snapping up the £20,000-a-week attacker last summer and "have continued to closely monitor his progress at Leeds". It is also believed that he is "keen to move on after failing to secure promotion back to the Premier League with the Whites".

Gnonto could be just what Everton and Sean Dyche are looking for in terms of attacking reinforcements in the summer window, standing out as a young player with a huge amount of potential.

Admittedly, the youngster was outperformed by Crysencio Summerville for Leeds last season, but that's not to say that he didn't impress for the Whites, too, scoring eight goals in the Championship, which is more than any Blues player managed in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, former coach Michael Skubala has lauded him in the past, saying: "He’s a great lad, he’s a special player. He’s a credit to Leeds, he’s a credit to himself and he’s a really nice player to work with."

At just 20, Gnonto is still raw in aspects of his game, but his all-round end product should only improve with age, and Everton could end up enjoying the best years of his career.

Imagine him & Minteh: Everton one of the favourites to sign ÂŁ20m star

The Toffees are at the front of the pack for this Premier League star.

ByAngus Sinclair Jun 24, 2024

To be a 13-cap Italy international this quickly says a lot about his ability and long-term ceiling, and if the Blues can beat others to his signature this summer, it could end up being a wonderful piece of business as the years pass.

Rohit Sharma arrives at the NCA amid lack of clarity over fitness

He has played three IPL games since suffering a hamstring tear, but it isn’t clear if he’s fully recovered yet

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Nov-2020A week after returning home from the UAE as a victorious IPL captain, Rohit Sharma, who played the last three weeks of the tournament at “70 percent fitness” according to the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, arrived at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru on Thursday. It isn’t clear yet if Rohit is at the NCA to finish his rehabilitation or take a fitness test. There has been some confusion surrounding Rohit’s hamstring injury. It was expected earlier that he would fly with the rest of the team to Australia directly from Dubai on November 12. And only a week prior to the departure, Ganguly had asked Rohit to exercise caution given the nature of his injury.”Rohit is injured at the moment. Otherwise, why would we leave out a player like him? He is the vice-captain of the national [limited-overs’] team,” Ganguly had said. “We will have to assess him. I don’t know [when he can come back]. He hasn’t played so far since the time he has got injured. We want him to recover. It’s the BCCI’s job to get their best players on the park. If he recovers, he plays.”ALSO READ: Wriddhiman Saha back at India nets, on road to recoveryRohit had suffered a hamstring tear in his left leg during the Mumbai Indians’ match against the Kings XI Punjab in Dubai on October 18. He missed the team’s next four games, but came back for the last three, helping them seal the title with a match-winning half-century against the Delhi Capitals in the final. The selection committee had first left Rohit out of all three squads for Australia, but he was later added to the Test squad. If he is cleared by the NCA staff and Sunil Joshi, the chief selector who is also assessing the fitness of Ishant Sharma at the NCA, Rohit will join the squad directly ahead of the Test series. But it isn’t yet clear if Rohit and Ishant will be available for both the warm-up fixtures leading into the first Test in Adelaide from December 17.
