Leeds could finally bin Firpo by signing 6 ft 3 colossus in 2024

Leeds United have had to think outside the box this season on a number of occasions when it comes to the defenders selected to start for the West Yorkshire giants, with teenage sensation Archie Gray – who usually operates as a midfielder – even being deployed as a full-back this campaign.

Likewise, the Whites have surprisingly given Sam Byram free rein to make the left-back spot his own despite only rejoining the club this summer and other options being available to start ahead of the injury-prone 30-year-old.

Junior Firpo's minutes have been significantly cut as a direct consequence, the £12.8m mega buy in the summer of 2021 by Marcelo Bielsa and Co reduced to appearances from off the bench this season with only one start in the Championship this campaign handed to the 27-year-old.

He will be actively looking to pack his bags and leave Elland Road if recent transfer rumours are also correct coming out of Leeds, Daniel Farke's side pursuing a move for KAA Gent full-back Archie Brown with Premier League suitors also reportedly curious about signing the defender.

Leeds United transfer latest – full-back hunt

Daily Mail football journalist Adrian Kajumba reported on the possibility of Leeds swooping in for the Gent man this week, but the second-tier club face fierce competition to land his signature.

Indeed, Everton and Burnley are also keen to sign the former Derby County youth product, the Whites hoping that Brown chooses the Championship side over the bright lights of the Premier League owing to Leeds offering more game-time being a decisive pull factor.

Any potential deal will be stopped in its tracks in January however, Brown has already played for two clubs this season so he cannot add a third in quick succession in accordance with FIFA regulations.

Still, Firpo will see this noise around Brown potentially joining at some point as grounds to leave Elland Road – TEAMTalk reporting that the ex Barcelona man has held talks with Real Betis over a possible transfer reunion in the works.

Leeds would be more than happy to wave goodbye to the underperforming full-back, waiting it out to land Brown who would be a significant upgrade on their current number three.

The stats that show why Brown would be a good signing for Leeds

Looking at Brown's FBRef profile, the current Gent man would be perfect for the style of football Farke demands his players stick to.

Brown is very much a forward-thinking presence, averaging 4.42 progressive carries per 90 minutes over the last year according to FBRef alongside receiving a remarkable 7.39 progressive passes.

In stark contrast, Firpo – who was labelled as an "absolute disaster" by 90min's Scott Saunders – comes in at a pitiful 2.15 progressive passes received with only 1.44 carries attempted as well.

Moreover, Brown has more pedigree at this moment in time compared to the fading Leeds defender – even despite Firpo donning a Barcelona strip early into his career.

The 21-year-old has played in the Europa Conference League for Gent this campaign, winning all but one of his duels in an October clash versus Maccabi Tel Aviv in the competition as per Sofascore.

It's even seen Brown be referred to as a "standout" performer for Gent according to Kajumba, the huge 6 foot 3 left-back a regular first-teamer for the Belgian outfit before a recent injury was picked up.

Brown's game could even be compared to that of former Leeds reject turned Ipswich Town hero Leif Davis, with both full-backs eager to rampage forward as much as they are content to complete their standard defensive duties.

Leeds will have to play the long game to land the promising 21-year-old, but if Farke's men can win promotion with an attractive brand of football at the heart of it, Elland Road could be even more of an attractive next destination for the ex-Rams youngster turned standout Gent star.

PCB backs Sarfaraz to captain Pakistan in 2019 World Cup

The board made the announcement on Tuesday with the man himself hoping to return to international cricket in March

Umar Farooq05-Feb-2019Sarfaraz Ahmed may have recently served out an ICC-imposed ban, but the PCB stated in emphatic terms that he will be captain when Pakistan play the World Cup in May 2019.The 31-year old was suspended for four matches over some of his on-field remarks against South Africa in January but the the PCB remained firmly on his side even as the episode unfolded. Its president Ehsan Mani even said, “Somewhere common sense was overruled by bureaucratic process.”Now, the board has made a fresh show of its support by naming him captain for the 2019 World Cup three months before the event.”Sarfaraz has been an integral part of the Pakistan’s World Cup preparations. He has proved to be a good strategist, leader and performer,” Mani said on Tuesday. “He led Pakistan to the Champions Trophy 2017 title as well as to top of the ICC T20I rankings.”Mani also confirmed that Sarfaraz’s position as captain will only be re-evaluated after the World Cup.”There were a lot of speculations around captaincy in media but I can confirm that he is our captain and he will remain for the upcoming series against Australia until World Cup,” Mani said. “I had no doubt about it but it’s unfortunate the uncertainty is making rounds over and over in media. We are not concerned at all about what is being discussed around.”So nobody should doubt him as captain. He is captain and will remain captain until next decision is taken. Yes, questions have been raised about the performances but in a bigger picture results have been good so far. I spoke to selectors, coaches, director operations and the entire board is behind him.”Mani, formerly the ICC chairman, recalled Sarfaraz’s captaincy during the Under-19 World Cup in 2006. “I first met Sarfaraz 13 years ago during ICC Under-19 World Cup in Colombo and his leadership quality was great,” Mani said. “Pakistan believed to have lost that game after scoring 109 against India but the way Sarfaraz led the side and got India out for 71 runs was outstanding. I couldn’t forgot that match and even wrote a letter to the then-chairman Shahryar Khan praising Sarfaraz’s leadership. There is no doubt at all in Sarafarz’s contribution to Pakistan. He has led at from Under-19 to Karachi, for PIA and then Pakistan.”Pakistan are scheduled to play 10 ODIs ahead of World Cup in May – five against Australia in UAE in March followed by five against England.Sarfaraz, who is currently preparing for the Pakistan Super League in February, said that Mani’s support has lifted his spirits. “I thank PCB for trusting me,” Sarfaraz said. “This support has always been there and I’m thankful for the reassurance. It is a big honour for me to lead Pakistan at World Cup and stand among those who did in past people like Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Shahid Afridi, Misbah-ul-Haq.””Pressure is always there during captaincy. But with the chairman and board’s support I feel motivated more than ever. I now would like to transfer the same to the team for the upcoming Australia series and World Cup.”

Man Utd could sign Hojlund 2.0 in "crazy" £34m gem who’s a bit like Martial

Erik ten Hag will be frustrated with the lack of consistency his team has shown this season, which has put the Red Devils sixth in the Premier League.

Yet Manchester United’s latest 3-2 victory against Aston Villa showed that when the side is confident, goals are almost guaranteed.

Man Utd transfers latest – Joshua Zirkzee

Eleonora Trotta of CalcioMercato recently tweeted that United are interested in signing Joshua Zirkzee, who plays for Bologna in the Serie A.

Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee

The forward apparently has a £34m release clause, however, only the player himself can activate it.

Other Premier League clubs are reportedly interested in acquiring the Dutch forward, but it is the Red Devils that are leading the race.

How Joshua Zirkzee compares to Rasmus Hojlund

Zirkzee has been having a “crazy” impact in Bologna, as per journalist Pietro Balzano Prota, and his stats are certainly impressive. The ex-Bayern Munich prospect moved to Italy last season for just £7.3m, but he has only settled in this campaign.

The 22-year-old has played 17 matches in Serie A, and he has netted seven times while also registering two assists, which has helped Bologna climb into fourth place.

The number nine stands at 6 foot 4, but Ten Hag has already been shopping for a young, tall centre forward in Italy this season, Rasmus Hojlund, who is currently United’s first-choice striker. That said, how does Bologna’s number nine compare to the current centre-forward options at the club based on stats from the last year across the top European leagues?

Based on the stats, it seems that Zirkzee is almost a blend of Hojlund and Anthony Martial, and he is noted to share close traits with the latter in FBref’s similar player model.

Firstly, the Netherlands star offers the physicality and traditional striker-like traits of the 6 foot 3 Dane, such as movement, the ability to hold up play, and a respectable off-the-ball work rate. However, he is much more similar to Martial in terms of his overall game.

For example, Zirkzee and the former Monaco man both like to be involved in the build-up and are comfortable receiving the ball with the view to get on the half turn, whereas Hojlund likes to play on the fringe of the game. They are also much more creative and like to link up play with other attackers. This creativity can come in the form of clever passes or taking on opponents with silky dribbling.

Overall, it is clear that Zirkzee has the technical ability and fluidity of Martial, and with the French forward potentially on his way out in January, replacing him with a like-for-like forward who is younger, far less injury-prone, and offers a different approach to Hojlund seems like a smart move by United.

Back-to-back promotions for Red DragonsAnother busy summer lies aheadSome popular figures are being moved onGetty/GOALWHAT HAPPENED?

The Red Dragons continue to enjoy a meteoric rise under the stewardship of Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, with back-to-back promotions carrying them into League One.

The ambitious Welsh outfit find themselves in the third tier of English football for the first time in 20 years, with impressive progress being made on and off the field.

Bigger challenges lie ahead, though, with manager Phil Parkinson in the process of piecing together recruitment plans for the summer transfer window – as Reynolds and McElhenney make more funds available.

Squad reshaping was always going to see some promotion-winning heroes moved on, and Wrexham have revealed who will be staying at SToK Racecourse for next season and which players are being freed to take on a new adventure elsewhere.

GOAL runs through the full retained list here as eight senior stars are released, three are given the chance to extend their association with the club and another sees an automatic extension triggered.

Joe Root turned down chance for rest during England T20Is

Test captain prefers to stay available for England as he seeks to re-establish himself in shortest form of the game

George Dobell26-Feb-2019It’s emerged that Joe Root had declined the opportunity to rest during the T20I series against West Indies as he “loves playing cricket for England”.England fined for over-rate offence

The ICC announced on Tuesday that England had been fined for a slow over-rate in the second ODI in Barbados.
The team as a whole were fined 10% of their match fee, with Eoin Morgan, the captain, fined 20%. While that may seem a minor issue now – indeed, it is defined by the ICC as ‘a minor over-rate offence’; England were deemed to be only one over short – it could lead to a suspension for Morgan if repeated in ODIs in the next 12 months.
That does not apply to the World Cup, however, where ICC regulations state that “all Team Captains will be treated, for the purposes of the ICC Event only, as having not committed any Minimum Over Rate Offences within the previous twelve month period.”

With a relentlessly busy year of high-profile cricket looming for England, the team management has been keen to ensure their key players – and Root certainly fits into that category – were kept as fresh as possible. As a result, Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes were rested for the three-match T20I series, with Moeen Ali belatedly given the chance to join them. However, Root, who has struggled with a back problem at times, preferred to stay with the squad. While Root does not have quite the same demands on his time as Buttler and Stokes, who are both expected to feature prominently in the IPL, he has given himself very little time off in recent months. He spent the Christmas period in between the tours of Sri Lanka and the Caribbean in Australia playing in the BBL, and has now forgone the extra ten days he may have had at the end of this tour. The cynical explanation for such a move is that Root is keen to make his name in T20 cricket so he can pick up more lucrative franchise offers. He has, at present, had little interest from that market and was not picked up in the IPL auction. The more realistic interpretation is that Root’s enthusiasm for cricket – and his desire to continue to develop and improve as a batsman – drives him on to take every opportunity he has to play; particularly with a World Cup this year and a T20 World Cup in 2020. He has not always won selection for England’s T20I side and is keen to cement his place in the team.”Why did I not want to miss the T20 games? Because I love playing cricket for England, simple as that,” Root said. “And I’ve not had much opportunity to play T20 cricket in the last couple of years.”I don’t want to miss out on opportunities to play when I’m fit and I feel I’m in a good place to help the side to win and be part of a squad that has a very exciting couple of years ahead of it. After that three-match series we have a good chunk of time at home. I’m sure I’ll spend some time with Yorkshire, which will be nice as well. I’m very aware of when those gaps will be in the next year or so. I feel this is a good opportunity to play.”Joe Root clips one off the legs•Getty ImagesWhile Root did not enjoy an especially successful time at the BBL – he failed to pass 26 in seven innings for Sydney Thunder – he insists the experience was beneficial and did not take too much out of him. He married right before leaving for the competition and was able to take his family with him to Sydney.”It was a new adventure,” he said. “I’ve not played any franchise cricket before, so it was very eye-opening and I learned a lot about my own game. And when you have your family with you, it does make life a lot easier.”It’s easy to come away from a tournament not having scored many runs and not saying I got something out of it. But genuinely I feel like there was a big development in that side of my game. More than anything, we’re looking at breaking the score down and how best to approach it. And how best to approach it with who you bat with at any given time. If that can transfer over into 50-over cricket as well, that will be fantastic. And it feels like it has in a way. With those T20s coming up, it will be great to see some of that going into those games.”While Root does not have the outrageous power of Chris Gayle, for example, his range of stroke is so great that he actually reached his century in the first ODI quicker than Gayle (96 balls compared to 100) and in scoring just 36 in boundaries (nine fours) compared to Gayle’s 66 (three fours and nine sixes). Their career strike rates are also almost identical (Root’s is 86.77 and Gayle’s 86.00), though Gayle’s career started in a different era of ODI cricket and they bat in different positions in the order.”Just because I don’t hit as many sixes as others might do, I still feel I can score as quickly,” Root said. “I can’t hit it over the stands like Chris can consistently unless there is a gale-force wind and I’ve got a top edge off a 95mph bowler. You have to play to your strengths and advantages. You’ve always got to look for ways to get better but ultimately getting the best out of yourself is the main thing.”I am quite settled in the way that I play. Having that understanding of your own game is important. I don’t hit four or five sixes every time I go out, but I like to feel I can strike at a similar sort of rate if I needed to. It’s an area I’m always trying to get better at. If I can add that to what I’ve got already, I’d like to think you’ll see even more improvement.”

'F*ck!' – Pep Guardiola's x-rated response when asked if fans like Man City as he closes in on historic fourth Premier League title in a row

City are closing in on a historic achievement as victory over West Ham on Sunday will see them become the first team ever to win four successive English league titles. But his side are still unpopular outside of City fans, chiefly as they are still under investigation by the Premier League for allegedly breaking its financial rules.

"Fuck. I don't know," Guardiola told a press conference when asked if people liked his football team. "Sometimes people ask me what I think people think of any subject and I don't think about it. I don't go knocking on doors asking what they think. I don't know, honestly."

City have been involved in a three-way fight for the title with Liverpool and Arsenal for much of the season but it's now between them and the Gunners after Jurgen Klopp's side faded in the final few weeks. Guardiola's side have won every game since drawing with Arsenal on March 31, leaving their fate in their own hands. "If you ask all the Premier League teams at the start of the season what would be the best position for the last game of the season, we are in the best position. We need to win one game to be champions so everyone would love to be in our position," Guardiola added. "But it won't be easy. I have the feeling it will be an Aston Villa game. We would love to be 3-0 up but it isn't going to happen."

Sunday's game will be David Moyes' final game in charge of West Ham. The Scottish manager was Guardiola's first opponent in the Premier League when City faced Sunderland in August 2016. "This type of personality in English football, he's not going to retire. my feeling is he will be back," Guardiola said. "If he is still involved at his age, he cannot be at home. The first game was against Sunderland and David Moyes was there, and now to win an important game he will be there. He is always so kind and it is always an honour to see him. He will do everything to beat us."

Queensland wrap up tense, low-scoring victory

South Australia were consigned to the bottom of the table little more than an hour into the third day at the Gabba

Daniel Brettig13-Mar-2019Queensland wrapped up a tense, low-scoring victory over South Australia to consign the Redbacks to the bottom of the Sheffield Shield table little more than an hour into the third day at the Gabba after 37 wickets fell over the first two days.Resuming at 7 for 94 in pursuit of 175, the visitors had placed much of their hope in Jake Lehmann, unbeaten overnight on 41. But in the third over of the morning, he was deemed lbw to Michael Neser, in the same over as he had been dropped in the slips by Marnus Labuschagne. The Bulls celebrated this wicket with relish, but still had to sweat through another 13.1 overs as SA’s last two wickets scrapped another 36 runs. The critical breakthrough was made by the spin bowler Mitchell Swepson, not previously used in the match, who coaxed Joe Mennie to slap a catch to cover. Luke Robins fell to Cameron Gannon shortly after to leave the Bulls victorious.

Sky Sports: Arsenal are "informed" about a move to sign Bundesliga "talent"

As good as Arsenal have been at times this season, recent slip-ups could prove costly come May with the Gunners now sitting fourth in the Premier League and five points adrift of leaders Liverpool. The January transfer window could yet turn the title race on its head, however, with the chance for all sides involved to sign key reinforcements.

Ahead of a crucial few months, Arsenal could prove their transfer genius once more by strengthening Mikel Arteta's squad. And that could include a deal to sign a Bundesliga gem ahead of Premier League rivals in an arrival that may benefit Arsenal in years to come.

Arsenal transfer news

After splashing out to sign Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber, Kai Havertz and David Raya in the summer transfer window, it would be incredibly disappointing for those at The Emirates if Arsenal failed to win the Premier League title. The Gunners came so close last time out before Manchester City swooped in on their way to a historic treble win. Hoping to avoid that feeling of defeat for a second consecutive campaign and also in years to come, Arsenal could welcome one particular future star from the Bundesliga this month.

According to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, Arsenal have been "informed" about a deal to sign David Odogu. The journalist posted on X:

With the potential to get one over on the likes of Chelsea and Brentford and sign a player with plenty of potential in the process, Arsenal could certainly be a club to watch in pursuit of Odogu. Given that the centre-back's contract will turn professional when he turns 18 on June 3, however, the Gunners may need to act quickly this month.

Odogu is an in-demand "top talent"

It speaks volumes that Wolfsburg are keen to keep hold of Odogu. The 17-year-old is yet to make his first-team debut but could take his opportunity with both hands when his first professional contract arrives in June. Before then, however, Arsenal could swoop in and hand the German the opportunity that he so desperately craves. Given Arteta's proven ability to work with young players too, having excelled with William Saliba, Bukayo Saka and others, Udogu could be wise to choose Arsenal over elsewhere in the Premier League.

Odogu is a player who's already caught the eye, including from Plettenberg, who described the Wolfsburg teenager as a "top talent" on X. As the January window progresses and Odogu's desire to leave Wolfsburg remains, he'll certainly be one to watch, especially if Arsenal make their move. Whilst the Gunners have one eye on the Premier League title, they could sign a player capable of playing a part in cementing Arteta's future legacy at The Emirates in years to come.
