Rangers could lose Nathan Patterson

A development has emerged on Rangers defender Nathan Patterson, regarding interest in the Gers’ full-back’s future at Ibrox.

What’s the talk?

According to 90min, Manchester United are lining up a swoop for the full-back ahead of the January transfer window.

The report claims more than 12 teams across Europe are keen on the youngster, whilst United also hold a tentative interest in Gers captain James Tavernier. Everton are named as one of the other clubs looking at Patterson, whilst United have alternative options in Kieran Trippier and Max Aarons.

Concern

This development on Patterson will surely leave Rangers fans feeling concerned over the possibility of a large blow in January. His potential has clearly caught the attention of a host of teams and that opens the door to the prospect of him leaving Ibrox in one of the upcoming transfer windows.

If more than 12 clubs are interested in the teenager then that could make it difficult for Rangers to keep hold of him. His agent could be fielding enquiries from sides left, right and centre and hearing that teams in the Champions League, such as Manchester United, are looking at him could turn his head.

Having the chance to go and play in the Premier League and Champions League, competing for the top trophies, could convince him to quit Ibrox, if United – or another side in Europe’s premier competition – make a serious move for him. This is precisely why Rangers fans should be worried.

The club’s head of academy Craig Mulholland once heralded the full-back as a great example for young players, saying: “Nathan has been fantastic for us this year.

“If you go and look at Nathan in the last 16 of the Europa League, if you look at him in the Old Firm game, it’s a great example for all the young players in here of what we’re trying to achieve.”

The 19-year-old has lived up to this high praise on the pitch. Last season, he averaged a solid SofaScore rating of 6.85 in the Europa League, showing that he can compete at a high level despite his young age.

In his only Premiership appearance this term, he provided an assist and recorded a score of 7.6 against Hibernian last weekend.

Patterson has shown that he has the potential to be a big player for Steven Gerrard moving forward and thus, supporters will be gutted to see him go.

He has already proven that he can play to a high standard in the Europa League and the Premiership and at the age of 19, he is James Tavernier’s ideal heir at right-back. With that in mind, it would be a hefty blow to lose him. After all, when Tavernier was missing last season, Patterson came in and performed admirably.

Should the former be missing again and the latter departs, the club would not be in good stead.

Bangladesh steady in reply to England's 392

Bangladesh Under-19 made a steady, if unspectacular, reply to England Under-19’s first-innings score of 392

Cricinfo staff13-Jul-2009
ScorecardBangladesh Under-19 made a steady, if unspectacular, reply to England Under-19’s first-innings score of 392, reaching 209 for 5 by the end of the second day in Derby.Bangladesh’s openers, Saikat Ali and Amit Majumder, provided a steady start, reaching 68 before Amjumder was lbw to Hamza Riazuddin. Ali fell shortly after on 45, also to Riazuddin, and failed to build on his start. It was to become a feature of Bangladesh’s innings and wickets fell regularly to peg the visitors back just when they were building a partnership. Anamul Haque ended the day on 45 not out and Bangladesh will want him to carry on and guide them towards England’s score. At the start of the day, England had resumed on 338 for 7 with Riazuddin and Thomas Poynton at the crease. Poynton was bowled for no addition to his overnight score of 1 but No. 10 Christopher Wood stuck around and scored 30 off 52 balls. Riazuddin was the last man out, stumped for 38 off the bowling of Mahmudul Hasan, who finished with 3 for 47.

Newcastle linked with Anthony Martial

Manchester United could be set to offload struggling striker Anthony Martial over the January transfer window after Newcastle United reportedly made contact with the club over his services.

What’s the story?

The Magpies joined the financial elite of football after being taken over by a Saudi-backed consortium, and the new owners have already started devising transfer market strategies.

According to Stretty News, Martial is one of the players identified as a priority target by the Newcastle hierarchy in what is set to be an exciting if controversial era for the club.

The report stated: “Stretty News understands that Newcastle United’s recruitment team have already made contact over the possibility of signing Manchester United’s Anthony Martial in January.”

They added: “A club source, who has been involved in initial talks, has revealed to us that Newcastle United have made formal contact with the Red Devils, as well as the player’s representative.”

Manchester United fans should be delighted

Martial has been heavily linked with an Old Trafford exit in recent months after struggling for form throughout the 2020/21 campaign.

The France international’s woes have continued into the current season, leading to speculation over an imminent exit, although he did bag his first goal since 2 February in the 1-1 draw with Everton last time out.

Despite Martial’s obvious talent, his inconsistency, lack of progress and low work ethic have seen him fall out of favour with some United supporters of late.

The arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo in the previous transfer window also forced the 25-year-old down Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s pecking order, and with the 20-time English champions set to target Erling Haaland next summer, January could be the optimum time to offload their underwhelming attacking talent.

Therefore, United fans should be delighted with Newcastle’s apparent interest in Martial. The newfound wealth of the St James’ Park outfit means that the Old Trafford club can demand a premium price for the £31.5m-rated forward, recouping a large chunk of their original £36m outlay on him.

It remains to be seen whether the Magpies make a concrete offer for Martial, but there’s surely a large section of the Red Devils’ fanbase who would be happy to see him depart.

Crystal Palace struck gold over Zaha deal

Crystal Palace weren’t renowned for being shrewd operators in the transfer market until the previous window, although the club’s hierarchy perhaps don’t get the credit they deserve for one particularly impressive deal.

Back in January 2015, the Eagles secured the return of fans’ favourite Wilfried Zaha from Manchester United on a permanent basis for just £3.42m, only two years after the youngster had moved in the opposite direction for an initial £10m fee.

The skilful winger had impressed after rising through the ranks at his boyhood club, scoring eight goals and providing a further 12 assists in 50 appearances as Palace earned promotion back to the Premier League in his final season at the club.

However, his time at United didn’t go to plan. At Old Trafford, Zaha enjoyed just 28 minutes of top-flight action in his first six months at the club before being loaned out to Cardiff City.

He was then loaned back to Palace for the first half of 2014/15 ahead of his return on a permanent basis, and the Ivory Coast international made no attempt to hide his delight after re-signing for his boyhood club.

“I wasn’t getting much game time at Manchester United, so took the opportunity of coming back on loan this season,” Zaha said at his unveiling. “To now have the chance to make the move permanent and come home to Selhurst Park is something I’m delighted about.

“For me to be a better player, I need to play more games, and having a gaffer I know has great trust in me gives me the confidence I need to help me improve my game. I started playing here when I was eight years of age, and my family live locally, and to have the opportunity to take the field in the Premier League for this club is a dream come true.”

Since then, Zaha has established himself as the Eagles’ talisman, bagging 70 goals and providing a further 73 assists in 401 appearances for the south London outfit across his multiple spells with the club and playing a pivotal part in their nine-year stay in the top-flight.

Zaha’s incredible exploits at Selhurst Park have seen his market value rise to a whopping £40.5m, which shows that Palace chairman Steve Parish struck gold over the Ivorian’s return to the club.

Hampshire and Sussex take centre stage

Local rivals Hampshire and Sussex prepare to battle for the Friends Provident Trophy

Andrew McGlashan24-Jul-2009As a nation takes time out to recover from the emotions of the first two Ashes Tests there’s a chance for the domestic game to have centre stage, albeit for one day, as local rivals Hampshire and Sussex battle for the Friends Provident Trophy. Less than a week after Andrew Flintoff brought Lord’s to its feet, county players will dream of victory on the famous ground. These are changing times for domestic cricket. Next week decisions will be taken on the structure of the game from next season and the consensus now appears three competitions played over the three standard lengths – first-class (four day), 50-over and 20-over. It has taken a long time for a lot of people to decide on a simple answer.Hopefully the new structure will give a little more breathing space to the fixture list so that the situation Hampshire find themselves in, of finishing a Championship match the day before the final, is avoided in the future. With scheduling like that, it’s no wonder England’s 50-over cricket struggles to develop and they start at a disadvantage to Sussex who have had a week to prepare. The glitz of Twenty20 (or more pertinently the money on offer) has raised questions about the health and longevity of the 50-over game and what part it plays in the future. But while county stars are excited by the prospect of Twenty20 finals day they still hold the showpiece Lord’s final close to their hearts.”It’s definitely the pinnacle for a domestic cricketer,” Luke Wright, the Sussex allrounder, told Cricinfo. “I’ve been lucky enough to be in one before and I can’t wait to experience it again. You don’t get too many chances in your career and to play in front of 27-28,000 fans is a special occasion. It doesn’t matter whether you are one of the younger or older players.”Crucially this has the makings of an eye-catching final: a local derby involving sides with a recent history of tension between their two former captains. When Chris Adams and Shane Warne were in charge of the respective sides there were a number of heated exchanges, but there was a sense that it was a clash of two personalities rather than two teams.”We’ve had some good battles,” Wright said. “There’s always talk in the build-up of the history between Warnie and Adams but as a group of players we have always got on very well together. There is a healthy rivalry as there should be between close neighbours.”It’s also hard to split the teams on paper. Sussex edge the batting stakes particularly now Matt Prior has been made available to join a hefty line-up that includes Wright, Murray Goodwin, Michael Yardy, the in-form Ed Joyce and the explosive Dwayne Smith. Joyce, who is returning to his former home ground, hit a career-best 146 off 139 balls in the semi-final against Gloucestershire and his success since moving from Middlesex has helped compensate for Adams’ retirement. However, Hampshire can boast the solid opening pair of Jimmy Adams and Michael Lumb, who has been named in England’s Champions Trophy 30 along with Joyce, and the recently prolific Michael Carberry with three hundreds in his last three Championship matches. They also have a potent bowling attack. Chris Tremlett should be competing for an England spot but his career hasn’t clicked, Dimitri Mascarenhas knows his county role perfectly unlike when he plays at international level and Dominic Cork’s fire isn’t close to burning out. They also have perhaps the trump card, that little bit of magic that can turn a game, with the legspin of Imran Tahir.Of course he’s no Warne (or, as Sussex supporters will point out, Mushtaq Ahmed), but he’s capable of changing a match. He took 3 for 38 in the semi-final against Lancashire and has eight wickets at 18.87 from four FP matches this season. Sussex, though, will counter that bowling strength with Yasir Arafat’s expertise at the start and end of the innings. The fielding? Both teams should be outstanding, but watch out for Smith and Carberry. This is why it’s too close to call. Then there is the battle between the two current captains – Mascarenhas and Yardy – who have learnt much from their predecessors. Mascarenhas would have been a brave choice to lead England in the World Twenty20, and shows many of Warne’s traits in the field, while Yardy’s early reign has shown the tough spirit that came from Adams.Whichever one of them is holding the trophy aloft, hopefully the match will have enabled domestic cricket to grab the attention. At least for a day.Sussex: Yasir Arafat, Will Beer, Joe Gatting, Murray Goodwin, Rory Hamilton-Brown, Andy Hodd, Ed Joyce, James Kirtley, Robin Martin-Jenkins, Chris Nash, Matt Prior, Dwayne Smith, Luke Wright, Michael Yardy (capt)

Lingard’s agents watched Newcastle clash

Pete Graves has provided an update on England international Jesse Lingard, relating to Newcastle’s pursuit of his services.

What’s the talk?

According to the Sky Sports journalist, the Manchester United man’s agents were in attendance for the Magpies’ 3-2 defeat to Tottenham as they are keeping a close eye on developments at the club.

He wrote: “I understand Lingard’s representatives were at St James’s Park yesterday keeping an eye on developments at #nufc.”

Lingard has been linked with a potential switch to St. James’ Park following PIF’s takeover of the club, with the January window just over two months away.

Fans will be buzzing

Newcastle fans will surely be left buzzing by this update from Graves as it suggests that there is potential interest from Lingard’s side to get a deal done. The initial Telegraph report stated that it was unclear whether or not the midfielder would be keen on the switch, but this latest development indicates that he is actively considering it by sending the relevant people to St. James’ Park.

The supporters will be delighted by that because Lingard is a proven Premier League performer who could come in and improve the team. He has shown throughout his career that he can score and assist goals, with 29 goals and 17 assists in 153 matches at Premier League level – mainly playing for United.

Last season, Lingard scored nine goals and provided five assists in 16 games on loan to West Ham in the top-flight, which means that he has a recent track record of performing to a high level.

United icon Andy Cole also hailed Lingard’s infectious nature earlier this year, hailing the impact he has on others. He said:

“I think Jesse has come back with that bit between his teeth. He has got the goal, but it is not just about the goal – it is his work rate as well.

“I think his work rate can become infectious. He is putting himself about, getting in the right areas – and getting himself a goal as well.”

Therefore, he could provide quality in the final third whilst also working hard off the ball to harass the opposition and drive his teammates on. This is why Newcastle fans will be delighted that he appears to be exploring the possibility of a transfer to Tyneside ahead of the January window.

PCB expects US$18 million for World Cup deal

The PCB expects a compensation amounting to US$18 million for the loss of hosting rights for the 2011 World Cup

Cricinfo staff28-Aug-2009The PCB expects total returns amounting to US$18 million out of its agreement with the ICC over the staging of the 2011 World Cup. The ICC and the PCB, on August 27, resolved the dispute during a meeting between the ICC president David Morgan and PCB chairman Ijaz Butt in Dubai. It was decided that Pakistan would retain its hosting fee of US$ 10.5 million and receive an additional payment as compensation for losing the rights to host the tournament.”At the moment the figure is around rupees 1 billion (US$12 million) but I hope it could go up to rupees 1.5 billion (US$ 18 million) by the time World Cup begins in 2011,” Butt told reporters upon his return to Lahore.Pakistan was stripped of its rights to host the 2011 World Cup in the aftermath of the attack on the Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore in March. The World Cup Secretariat, the organising body of the tournament, was also moved to Mumbai from Lahore and Pakistan’s share of the matches was allocated to the three other co-hosts, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.”We feel that this was the best possible solution and we will get additional amount and would not be forced to beg around for money to keep our cricket on track,” Butt said of the agreement. “It’s a confidential document which we both (ICC and PCB) signed, but I can tell you that much that I hope the total earnings of PCB might go up to rupees 1.5 billion.”As a result of the resolution of the dispute, Butt said that the PCB would withdraw all its legal cases against the ICC. “Within the next 15 days the PCB will withdraw all its legal cases against the ICC,” he said.Butt added that he and two of his PCB colleagues – Wasim Bari, the PCB Director for Human Resources, and Suban Ahmed, the General Manager for International Cricket Affairs – will attend the meeting of the tournament’s Central Organising Committee on September 2 in Mumbai. Pakistan, he said, would not be nominating any member to the secretariat. “The reason is it will be expensive for us to have our people in the secretariat when it is based in Mumbai and not Lahore,” he said. “But we will be part of the Central Organising Committee.”

Gayle captaincy not guaranteed – Hilaire

The West Indies Cricket Board’s incoming chief executive, has expressed confidence that a full-strength West Indies squad will tour Australia later this year, but raised doubts over whether Chris Gayle will be the man to lead them

Alex Brown23-Sep-2009Ernest Hilaire, the West Indies Cricket Board’s incoming chief executive, has expressed confidence that a full-strength West Indies squad will tour Australia later this year, but raised doubts over whether Chris Gayle will be the man to lead them. Gayle’s comments regarding the West Indian captaincy and the future of Test cricket have remained with Hilaire, who feels the selection panel would be prudent to quiz the veteran batsman over his long-term leadership ambitions.Floyd Reifer has captained the Windies in Gayle’s strike-enforced absence but his recent performances suggest he will not retain his place if and when the region’s senior players return. Denesh Ramdin was rated by the former West Indies coach John Dyson as a future international captain, but just which direction Clyde Butts’ selection panel intend to take in regards to the leadership role remains unclear.”It is for the selection committee to discuss and make a recommendation to the board,” Hilarie told Cricinfo. “Chris has said in the recent past that he is not that interested in playing Test cricket anymore. I’m very open minded, and I am not sure what the selection committee is thinking. But I would have thought in light of recent reports it would be wise to ask him the meaning of his comments. Was it an emotional time? Was he stressed? Is it something he is now willing to look beyond?”At the end of the day, it is difficult leading a team that hasn’t been winning for a long time. Whoever has the job, they need the full support of the board and WIPA (West Indies Players’ Association) in coping with the demands of the captaincy and have an environment that is conducive to him getting the best from his players.”Ricky Ponting this week echoed the sentiments of his chief executive, James Sutherland, in expressing fears that West Indies could announce an under-strength squad for the tour of Australia, much like it did for the disastrous bilateral series against Bangladesh in July-August. Butts recently issued an ultimatum for striking players to make themselves available for the regional limited-overs tournament next month or risk exclusion from the Australian touring party, and Hilaire was hopeful of a peaceful, if potentially awkward, reintegration process.”The board has said from the start it wants all players to be available to tour Australia,” he said. “I hope that all parties will show their commitment to West Indies cricket by ensuring that happens. That is what we are working towards. As with anything, there are no guarantees but we need a commitment from everyone that this is what we should work towards. There will certainly be a challenge in getting the players back together and playing as a cohesive unit. It will require strong leadership, but I am confident that it will be achieved.”

West Brom: Fans react to Steve Madeley post

West Brom’s correspondent for The Athletic, Steve Madeley, shared a story on Valerien Ismael’s midfield options on Monday.

And a number of West Brom fans were quick to react to his Twitter post as a result.

The Baggies ran out 3-0 winners against Bristol City on Saturday but were without central midfield regulars Jake Livermore and Alex Mowatt.

Livermore was suspended and Mowatt injured, which meant Ismael used Robert Snodgrass and Jayson Molumby. The pair impressed against The Robins, with Ismael labelling Snodgrass as man of the match.

Madeley looked into the possibility of Snodgrass and Molumby starting alongside each other again when West Brom travel to promotion rivals Fulham this weekend.

He labelled the idea of Albion going into a game without Livermore and Mowatt as ‘unthinkable’ prior to the weekend.

However, it now feels as if that might happen after the positive displays from Snodgrass and Molumby.

Baggies fans react

This is what these West Brom supporters had to say in reply to Madeley, with many hoping Livermore doesn’t return to the side.

“Livermore’s suspension was the best thing that could have happened. He doesn’t offer anything and can’t pass. Mowatt would relish playing with Molumby/Snoddy next to him.”

Credit: @Jackk_Ross

“Was only unthinkable if you hadn’t got eyes. The fact that this pairing only happened by chance and not by choice is somewhat baffling and maybe even scary.”

Credit: @wezzaboing74

“About time Livermore is phased out of the starting XI. All he does is fall to his knees when other players score. How got like 10 games for England is completely beyond me”

Credit: @JoelDMendez

“Only unthinkable to fans who don’t understand football. Its been obvious all season Livermore doesn’t offer anywhere near enough in a 2 man midfield. The fact he is constantly diving in is enough to demonstrate that.”

“Always look better without Livermore”

“I don’t know what Livermore brings to the side and can’t tell you what sort of player he is, about time he was dislodged from the side”

West Ham: Moyes must axe Benrahma vs Genk

West Ham United can put one foot in the knockout stages of the Europa League with another victory against Genk later this evening.

David Moyes’ side travel to Belgium with a 100% record in Group H, where they hold a six-point advantage over all three remaining teams. And they will head into kickoff in inspired form.

The Irons thrashed Aston Villa 4-1 on Sunday afternoon to cement their place inside the Premier League’s top four. They are now level on points with defending champions Manchester City, who they knocked out of the Carabao Cup this time last week.

Moyes will be tasked with the conundrum of resting players, whilst also maintaining their impressive performance levels, so it will be intriguing to see his lineup.

One name that could be facing the axe tonight is Said Benrahma after a mixed showing at Villa Park.

The £22.5m-rated Algerian winger delivered an assist for Declan Rice’s strike but that was more down to the English powerhouse as he drilled a scorcher home from long range.

Aside from that, he offered very little and it’s been a similar case over the last few games as his form has tailed off compared to the way in which he began the 2021/22 campaign.

Benrahma kickstarted the season with two goals and two assists against Newcastle United and Leicester City but in the subsequent eight outings, he has only scored one goal and provided one assist, as per Transfermarkt.

Recently, The West Ham Way’s Dave Walker described the wide man as “most exciting player” the club have had since Dimitri Payet, also dubbing him a “match-winner.”

Elsewhere, the 5 foot 8 wizard was once dubbed a “true magician” by former Nice teammate Lorenzo Vinci.

However, on Sunday, he was hooked after just 68 minutes, having managed only three more touches of the ball (31) than goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski (28), which goes to show his lack of influence on the game.

Furthermore, the 26-year-old dynamo failed to deliver a single accurate cross, made just one dribble from three attempts (33.3%) and won only three of his eight battles (37.5%), via SofaScore.

This sort of lightweight showing typifies the inconsistencies in his game but that’s understandable as there’s still some element of adapting to the Premier League, as well as other players such as Rice and Jarrod Bowen elevating their games even more.

It could be wise to bench him to spark a reaction and also hand an opportunity to players like Nikola Vlasic, who too need to impress the manager outside of top-flight action.

Moyes must be ruthless and axe Benrahma in Belgium tonight.
