Fabinho back in Liverpool training

Many Liverpool fans were delighted to discover that makeshift centre-back Fabinho has made his return to first-team training.

The club’s official Twitter account posted images of the 27-year-old back in action at the AXA Training Centre, who has been absent since his side’s 3-2 defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup in January.

Normally a defensive midfielder, Fabinho has been playing at centre-back for all but three Premier League games he has featured in this season – on the back of the club’s hugely unfortunate injury crisis.

Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are all out for the season and Liverpool brought in Preston’s Ben Davies and Schalke starlet Ozan Kabak on loan to compensate for their centre half deficit.

Unsurprisingly, and with Manchester City on the horizon, supporters were overjoyed to see Fabinho back on the training pitches and made their feelings clear on social media.

Man Utd’s James stole the show vs Sociedad

Bruno Fernandes’ two strikes either side of half-time, including a sublime effort in the second half, helped Manchester United in a stunning 4-0 victory over Real Sociedad in Turin.

Fernandes’ clever finish gave the Red Devils the lead halfway through the first half before the Portugal international scored his second of the game by curling the ball into back of the net from the edge of the area.

It may not be often that we say this, however, but Daniel James actually outshone him on the night. The Wales international has had his fair share of critics since his arrival at Old Trafford, ourselves included, but this was the kind of performance United fans have been expecting to see from a player who was once billed as the ‘next Gareth Bale.’

Despite Fernandes no doubt taking most of the headlines having bagged a brace against the two-time La Liga champions, James also shone brightly at the Allianz Stadium after he played a key role on the right-hand side of their attack, to leave Italy with a goal and an assist and end his wait for his first goal in the Europa League this season.

After Solskjaer’s side doubled their advantage when James’ pass released Fernandes on goal, it appeared as though the Red Devils would deservedly be going into the second leg at Old Trafford with a vital three points, and from then on it was pretty much one-way traffic as Sociedad struggled to earn a foothold in the game.

James could have ended the night with a couple more goals to his name, too, after recording two shots on target – only Fernandes attempted more shots on target, only for one to be ruled out for offside and another to be denied by a good save from goalkeeper Alex Remiro.

Not only was James a live wire with the ball at his feet, but he also demonstrated a real sense of composure as he produced 18 out of 19 attempted passes at a pass success rate of 95%. No other player in a United shirt scored higher by SofaScore, including Fernandes, who could only muster a pass accuracy rating of 83% by comparison.

In addition, the Welshman also won 71% of his duels overall, winning five out of a possible seven individual battles , which implies that, for the most part at least, he managed to get the better of the opposition.

This was just the sort of confidence boost he needed that will surely only help him in the long run and should do him the world of good going into the business end of the season.

James’ electric pace and incisive ability on Thursday night really made him stand out as Solskjaer’s real attacking magician.

Leeds’ Bielsa should start Shackleton

After seeing Kalvin Phillips limp off in the dying minutes of Leeds’ 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, Marcelo Bielsa will no doubt be sweating over his talisman’s fitness during this week.

The Athletic’s Phil Hay revealed after the game that it was “too early to say” about the midfielder, but considering that he initially seemed to go down with a calf problem, he faces a real race against time to make the Premier League game against Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday.

But in Jamie Shackleton, Bielsa could find his saviour.

The 20-year-old has been on the fringes of Leeds’ long-awaited return to the Premier League, playing just 296 minutes of football in the top-flight.

And quite recently, Bielsa hasn’t even turned to him as an option off the bench – barring the two minutes that he came on to replace Phillips against Palace last time out, Shackleton remained an unused sub for the past four Premier League matches.

But with question marks over Phillips’ availability, Bielsa must unleash Shackleton on Sunday when they travel to north London to take on Arsenal.

Speaking after his cameo in that 5-0 win over West Brom earlier this season, the Leeds boss said: “Good organisation, energetic, he’s quick, he can surprise opponents, plays in a position which has many varieties as a box-to-box midfielder.”

Shackleton wouldn’t exactly be a like-for-like replacement for Phillips, but his extra energy and dynamism could counter Arsenal’s young guns well.

The likes of Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka have been two of Arsenal’s stand-out players in recent weeks, and Shackleton’s own youthful endeavour could be key to combating that – his average of 0.8 interceptions per game in the Premier League ranks him seventh among his Leeds teammates, while he actually gets dribbled past the least amount in the squad, just 0.5 times per match.

And, after he produced a tigerish performance against Aston Villa, Leeds Live’s Beren Cross wrote: “Settled in so quickly and linked up the play between midfield and attack beautifully. So important for his confidence and visualising himself in this team going forward. Tireless running and helped Klich win that midfield battle with McGinn and Barkley.”

On Sunday, Leeds will need every bit of that tireless running as they try and find a unique way to replace Phillips. Shackleton’s introduction to the starting eleven could prove to be a masterstroke from Bielsa and one that helps the Whites boss forget all about his main midfield man.

Meanwhile, Bielsa can find his next Klich in this Leeds transfer target…

Urhoghide must start for Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday will be looking to get back on track this evening, having slipped back down to second-bottom in the Championship following back-to-back defeats.

A change in the line-up is surely inbound as Owls caretaker Neil Thompson aims to spark a reaction as they head to the capital to face promotion-chasing Brentford.

After switching to a 4-4-2 against relegation rivals Birmingham at the weekend, the interim boss would be wise to revert back to the 3-5-2 that had been working in prior outings.

And in doing so, he’ll be able to unleash one of Wednesday’s most promising talents…

On the Chalkboard

Indeed, going back to a three-man defence could see Osaze Urhoghide come back into the fray after being unfairly axed for the game at Hillsborough Stadium on Saturday.

There also won’t be a better time to unleash the 20-year-old gem as the Bees will be without the division’s most lethal threat, 24-goal top scorer Ivan Toney.

It means the young academy sensation could slot straight back in alongside the experienced duo of Chey Dunkley and Tom Lees without much worry for how he may react as the opposition’s biggest influence will not be playing.

Not that a game of this enamour should faze Urhoghide. After all, he made his competitive senior debut in an FA Cup third-round clash against Premier League outfit Brighton last season.

In four league starts this term, the versatile 6 foot 2 beast has kept two clean sheets, whilst his average WhoScored rating of 6.81 sees him rank third overall for all of the Owls’ defensive options.

Only the aforementioned duo are averaging more aerial duels won per game than Urhoghide (3.8), which shows that he’s still a tough man to beat aerially despite his relative inexperience.

There’s no better defender in this current squad in terms of work-rate as he’s managed two tackles per game, which is only bettered by the industrious Sam Hutchinson right now.

Speaking about his form just a few weeks ago, Thompson told reporters:

“You get [a] whole-hearted attitude from Osaze. He wants to play football,” before adding: “Centre-half is his best position without any shadow of a doubt.”

This endorsement very much echoes the thoughts of club captain Barry Bannan, who dubbed Urhoghide a “great lad” and also claimed: “I think we’ve got a player there,” via The Sheffield Star.

With no Toney and a need to get back to winning ways, the Owls must shift back to a 3-5-2 system, and in doing so, it’ll allow the young Owls gem to slot right back in naturally.

He must start against the Bees tonight.

AND in other news, Thompson must brutally axe “explosive” Owls star tonight…

Windass thinks West Ham will sign Lingard

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, former Premier League striker Dean Windass has tipped West Ham to sign Jesse Lingard on a permanent basis this summer.

Having fallen down the pecking order under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United, the England international made the switch to the London Stadium on loan in January to enhance his opportunities.

£75,000-a-week man Lingard hadn’t played a single minute of Premier League football for United this season, but has enjoyed an impressive revival since signing for to the Hammers.

He scored a brace on his debut at Aston Villa before netting the crucial second in the win over London rivals Tottenham last month, which has seen West Ham emerge as genuine top-four contenders.

Lingard’s contract at Old Trafford expires next summer, which could lead to him being available to West Ham at a cut-price.

And Windass believes that it’s a deal that he thinks will happen once the window reopens.

He exclusively told Football FanCast:

“He’s hit the ground running. I think Lingard will sign for West Ham. His days at Manchester United are numbered.”

Windass might be right here. Whilst Lingard is a United Academy graduate, he’s approaching a stage in his career where he must be playing regularly.

And if he isn’t part of Solsjkaer’s plans moving forward, then a permanent move to West Ham would be a positive deal for all parties.

Not to mention that West Ham are on course to finish in Europe, which could therefore improve Lingard’s chances of getting an England recall.

LFC fans criticise Robertson and Mane

A number of Liverpool fans have revealed their frustration with Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane, despite the Reds’ win over RB Leipzig.

The Premier League champions were excellent on Wednesday night, beating Leipzig 2-0 in deserved fashion and making it through to the Champions League quarter-finals.

After a terrible run of form in the league, a response was much-needed from Liverpool and they duly obliged, comprehensively outplaying their opponents.

They had to wait until the final 20 minutes to break the deadlock, but quickfire efforts from Mohamed Salah and Mane sealed a 4-0 win aggregate victory.

[freshpress-poll id=“348883″]

In truth, Mane was again far from his best overall, however, looking a far cry from the world-class player who has been so key for Liverpool in recent years.

Similarly, Robertson looked flat down the left flank, lacking his usual energy and quality on the ball, not to mention his link-up play with Mane.

Antonio let West Ham and Moyes down

Michail Antonio delivered a worse display than Jarrod Bowen against Manchester United with the West Ham striker often invisible in Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

David Moyes had opted to start the pair in a two-strong strike force to make up for the loss of Jesse Lingard, who has four goals and two assists in six games for the club, as he was unable to feature against his parent side due to the terms of his loan transfer.

Lingard was ultimately a big miss for the Irons as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side often dominated proceedings, with an early corner won by Antonio as good as things got for the visiting side in the first half.

The corner won by Antonio eventually posed no threat to Dean Henderson’s clan sheet, as Mark Noble’s in-swinging cross failed to find a teammate at the far post after a mini-pileup involving Craig Dawson and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Referee Martin Atkinson saw no issue with the collisions but Moyes saw plenty of problems with the performance of his attacking options, with West Ham sloppy in most of their transitions.

“It was really poor. When we broke in the first half, I thought our play was really, really poor… and that led to not having sustained attacks and we could not keep [the ball], so our play on the break was really poor,” the Hammers boss said after the game, via quotes by football.london.

Moyes added: “We thought tonight that the way we would play with two up, Jarrod and Michail, as two forwards to start with, we thought that might give them a problem to start with, so I saw that as being positive in a different way. But, ultimately, we got better as the game went on when we brought on Manu [Lanzini] and Said [Benrahma].”

Football.london likewise took issue with the performances of Antonio and Bowen, yet awarded the former Hull City winger – playing out of his natural position – a lesser match rating at five out of 10 to the £70,000-per-week striker’s score of six.

Bowen was noted to have earned a lesser grade as he ‘failed to get into the game a huge amount’, while Antonio ‘did well with what little ball he had’ and ran the channels well to chase down the Manchester United defenders.

Yet Bowen was not worse than Antonio, but rather the opposite, as the £22m January 2020 signing produced considerably more in attack than his strike partner despite seeing as much – or rather as little – of the ball.

Across the 90 minutes, Bowen registered 43 touches to Antonio’s 40, and used his time in possession to offer twice as many shots (2) and create twice as many goalscoring chances (2), per SofaScore.

Only the Irons’ goalkeeper, Lukasz Fabianski (31), registered fewer touches than Antonio among those who played the full 90 minutes for the visiting side on Sunday, while Tomas Soucek took a team-high three shots and Bowen offered a team-high number of key passes.

Bowen also made three successful dribbles from four, while Antonio lost the ball with his sole attempt of the night. He delivered two accurate crosses from four, as well, to the 30-year-old centre-forward’s zero accurate efforts from two.

For all of Antonio’s hard work, he failed to offer a single successful tackle, interception or clearance and was dribbled past once, while 24-year-old Bowen offered two interceptions.

Altogether, their efforts meant Bowen earned a 7.2 match rating from SofaScore – the third-highest by a West Ham player – while Antonio registered a 6.4 – the joint-worst by any player for either side who featured at any stage.

Moyes needed Antonio and Bowen to do much of the heavy lifting in attack against Manchester United with Lingard unable to feature, but it was the latter who gave the most while the former frequently proved invisible and let his head coach down.

Man Utd must unleash Diallo vs WHU

Manchester United have been hit by an attacking injury crisis ahead of their Premier League meeting with West Ham United.

Uruguayan forward Edinson Cavani is currently on the sidelines and it looks like he has been joined by Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, bwith oth forwards reported as being big doubts ahead of the clash.

Usually, having three forwards ruled out would decimate a side, however, Man United fortunately have a man ready to step into the breach – Amad Diallo.

Signed from Atalanta last summer and officially joining the club in the January transfer window, the Ivorian has made a fantastic start to life at Old Trafford.

As well as netting three goals and two assists in just two appearances for the Red Devils’ U23 side, he has carried that form into the senior set-up.

Replacing Anthony Martial in the recent 1-1 draw against AC Milan in the UEFA Europa League, he showed the awareness of an aged pro by netting his first-ever United goal with a clever backwards header that looped over the stranded Gianluigi Donnarumma.

It is that inventiveness and bravery that should see him drafted into the United first team for the clash against the Hammers.

After all, Red Devils’ boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already suggested that Diallo is going to be “big” after his electric start in Manchester.

Whilst it could be argued that his inclusion would only be out of necessity with the club’s lengthy injury list, Diallo would more than justify a start given his personal statistics.

According to WhoScored, the £13.5m-rated wideman is averaging 0.3 shots, 1.3 dribbles and drawing one foul per game in his United appearances so far. It is somewhat true that they are not sparkling statistics, but it has to be considered that they are only over a period of approximately 83 minutes over three substitute appearances.

It would be natural to assume that his productivity would increase if afforded more time on the pitch by Solskjaer, starting with Sunday’s Premier League clash against West Ham United.

He was brought to United for a reason and later today, he should be given the chance to shine. Rashford’s injury is undoubteldy a blow to United, but Diallo can ease those worries if given a chance by Solskjaer.

Exclusive: Frank McAvennie resigned to Celtic losing Odsonne Edouard

Exclusively speaking to Football FanCast, former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie admits the Scottish side are resigned to losing star striker Odsonne Edouard this summer.

Since joining on loan from Toulouse back in the summer of 2018 before making his deal permanent the following season, the Frenchman has become the Hoops’ talisman, helping Celtic to domestic trebles in each of his first three years in Glasgow.

But having entered the final 18 months of his contract at Celtic Park, the frontman has been linked with a host of Premier League clubs already this term.

One of those sides is Arsenal, who would have no doubt been impressed with Edouard’s goalscoring exploits in recent seasons – with the former PSG man approaching 100 goals in Celtic colours, 20 of which have come so far this campaign.

But McAvennie has accused the striker of “not breaking sweat” this year despite Edouard being on course to win the Scottish Premiership Golden Boot.

Asked whether he sees the Frenchman leaving in the summer, he told Football FanCast: “I think so. I think the fans have resigned themselves that he’s going to go.

“He’s scored double figures, and he’s not even broke sweat this year. He’s a talent. I said last year that I think he could possibly become better than Dembele, and now clubs like Manchester United are looking at Dembele. I wouldn’t like Edouard to go back to France.”

But does the former Celtic frontman believe that the Frenchman is good enough to play in the Premier League?

He continued: “He’s good enough when he wants to play, but I’ve not see it this year. He hasn’t looked interested.”

Wolves legend Bull wants Doherty to re-sign

Wolves legend Steve Bull has called for the club to re-sign Matt Doherty this summer following the defender’s struggles at Tottenham.

The Republic of Ireland international departed Molineux last summer after a decade at the club, making the move to Spurs.

Doherty has struggled to make his mark in north London, however, making just 12 starts in the Premier League and finding himself increasingly out of favour under Jose Mourinho.

It has been claimed that Wolves could give the right-back an opportunity to return this summer as he looks for regular football again.

Bull wants Doherty to rejoin Wolves

Speaking to Football FanCast, Bull has talked up the possibility of Doherty becoming a Wolves player again, saying he would welcome him back with open arms:

“I don’t get why you sell someone who you think is a great asset to a club that might hardly use him. He’s been a bit injured, but he’s a talented player.

“If Wolves did go back for him, I would chop your arm off tomorrow.”

Transfer Tavern take

Doherty returning to Molineux could be a shrewd move for all parties, with the £65,385-a-week earner rarely looking a settled figure at Spurs this season.

He was such an influential performer at Wolves for a number of years, providing so much quality down the right flank, scoring 28 goals and registering 41 assists in 302 appearances.

At 29, the £16.2m-rated Doherty should still have a number of years left in him at the top and he could provide strong competition for Nelson Semedo at right-back if Wolves follow through on Bull’s wishes and bring the Irishman back to the Midlands.

In other news, some Wolves fans have been calling for the club to sign one player this summer. Read more here.
